[Bug 222761] Re: [SRU] upsd doesn't start NOT 221737

2008-05-29 Thread Steve Beattie
I reproduced the initial problem using nut-2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7. I verified
that using the package in -proposed, nut-2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7.1, corrects
the issue, but *only* if the -proposed package is a new installation of
the nut package. Upgrading to the nut package in -proposed from the
version released in Hardy does not fix the issue; this is because the
nut user and group already exist in the passwd database, and thus
adduser does not get invoked. Similarly, removing the nut package
entirely and then attempting to install the fixed package leaves the
user with the same problem because on package removal the nut user and
group are not removed.

I'm assuming this is insufficient and am tentatively rejecting the fix,
as the committed fix doesn't actually address the issue for people
currently attempting to use the package.

My test system does not have a UPS attached so I haven't actually
verified that the nut package otherwise works.

[Bug 235646] Re: Cannot Print to PDF using Likewise-Open

2008-05-29 Thread Mathias Gug
The two messages are related to AppArmor and the cups profile.

The first entry seems to be an issue with likewise-open authentication
and its likewise abstraction.

The second entry is related to cups-pdf profile, which allows cups-pdf
to write pdf file only to certain directories. Have a look at the cupsd
apparmor profile in /etc/apparmor.d/ and the HOME definition in
/etc/apparmor.d/tunables/.

You can find more information about debugging AppArmor issues at

Haven't worked on it since, but will be returning to it. Are there any
docs on implementing likewise-open yet? Went to their site in February
and there wasn't much there, and I couldn't get a subscription to their
listserv despite application for it. When I sent questions to them by
e-mail, their only reply was to try to sell me their commercial product.
The concept looks good though, so if Ubuntu's going to be providing
documentation, I will try to implement it.

[Bug 235809] [NEW] apache2 startup script fails to stop apache2 at times.

2008-05-29 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

I am having a hard top with /etc/init.d/apache2 stops and restarts (due
to the stop phase) from my Hardy Server. Typically after some usage
involving mod_ruby (not clear that it's from ruby, or just from
traffic), a restart is unable to stop any of the apache processes and I
have to kill them by hand to proceed. Either apache needs to be fixed,
or an alternative harder kill done as a matter of course in the script
when this happens. Otherwise you spend all day killing apache to get
things done. I have no experience with this outside of my Hardy Server.

[Bug 224428] Re: [SRU] munin-node not restarted after plugin installation

2008-05-29 Thread Steve Beattie
I am unable to reproduce the initial reporters problem with a fresh
install of the original version shipped with Hardy, munin-node
1.2.5-2ubuntu3. Perhaps we can get a better test case here?

I did verify the package in -proposed, munin-node 1.2.5-2ubuntu3.1, does
show the list of available plugins after installation. I also fetched
some information from various plugins (including a test one I wrote) and
the -proposed package appears to function correctly.

[Bug 235809] Re: apache2 startup script fails to stop apache2 at times.

2008-05-29 Thread sf
It is normal behavior that the apache processes stay around until they
have finished processing the currently active requests (since we are
using graceful-stop). Normally you should just be able to start apache
again even before all processes are dead. Is this not the case for you?
What error message do you get?

Same problem with kpdf 0.5.9 / poppler 0.6.4

System is a clean install of Kubuntu 8.04

xpdf works fine.

kpdf 0.5.6 / poppler 0.5.4 on Kubuntu 7.04 worked fine.

Am filing here as I assume the problem is also poppler, and so should not open
a separate bug report.
If I should open a separate bug report, let me know.

Have not tried poppler 0.8 - am not sure how.

[Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-05-29 Thread Darryl Grennan
Re-opening this bug as I still have it. I'm running a fully patched
Hardy system.

Here's how to replicate the bug. You need to have Ubuntu's Visual
Effects enabled to trigger this.

1. Open a single instance of Firefox with no tabs open.
2. Go to http://www.htmlgoodies.com/legacy/beyond/javascript/bigsmall.html
3. Click the Maximize link located at the top left of this webpage.
4. Close Firefox.
5. Re-open Firefox.
6. Now the titlebar for Firefox and upper/lower panels should be missing.

You will also notice that the Edit-- Preferences will open under the
browser instead of on top as well as the Downloads window.

To get Firefox back to normal you need to:

1. Press F-11 twice.
2. Click the Maximize button at the top right of you Firefox Window.
3. Notice that your top panel disappears but the bottom one remains present.
4. Right click on the Firefox process within your bottom panel and click Move
5. With your mouse, drag the window down a bit so that you can manually resize
it to your ideals.
6. Hit the Maximize button again and it should be back to normal.

[Bug 150333] Re: More magic for Kubuntu

2008-05-29 Thread usr
** Description changed:

GNOME had more lacks than KDE. Ubuntu's developers have solved it, and
the proof of this is that in Ubuntu's 7.10 GNOME already it is not
necessary to open a terminal to configure the system.

For it, I think that now it is the moment to offer a bit more of
contribution to Kubuntu project, and to obtain this way a distro as
perfect as Ubuntu, but with the whole potential that KDE offers (¡It 's
possible rip audio CDs with copy paste!), which will be, undoubtedly
(in my opinion), the definitive desktop.

With this I want to say, that, you should put the same magic simultaneously
in both distributions.
For example: it has been necessary to wait to kubuntu 7.10 to have GDebi-KDE,
and the rest of automations that are not in Kubuntu, but yes in Ubuntu.
I request the same magic that exists in Ubuntu.

[Bug 235672] [NEW] devices attached to PCCard-USB adapter not recognized at boot time

2008-05-29 Thread JoseO
Public bug reported:

USB devices attached via a USB-PCMCIA Adaptor are not recognised at boot
time. After a cold start, once the system has booted up, I must
manually remove and insert those devices in order to make the system
recognise them. After a warm restart, some of them are recognised,
some not (see below for more details about which ones).

My system is a HP-Compaq laptop (NC8000 family) with two USB2.0 ports
and a pcmcia expansion slot, in which I have a PCMCIA-USB
adapter/hub/controller (don't know the correct term :) that expands the
laptop connection with two new USB ports). Attached to each port are:

USB1 = Pinnacle dual dvb-tv tuner (recognised without problem)
USB2 = Arduino board (works with ftdi_sio as a serial port connected via USB)
PCMCIA USB1 = Pinnacle dvb-tuner (problems at cold boot)
PCMCIA USB2 = IOMega external hard drive 500GB (problems at cold/warm boot)

Devices attached directly to laptop's USB ports work without any
problem. For devices attached via USB additional ports (via PCMCIA),
there are two scenarios:

A) Cool booting (laptop switched off - laptop switched on):

- The Hauppauge dvb-tv is not recognised until I manually unplug and plug it
back again. At that poit, it is recognised and initialised, and everything
works ok regarding this device
- The iomega storage is recognised but not mounted (it has an entry in
/etc/fstab) and I must manually mount it

B) Warm reboot (laptop reboot without unplugging)

- The hauppauge dvb-tv is recognised and works properly (no problem here)
- The iomega storage is recognised but not mounted (same that in the (a)
scenario)

Some days ago, my first configuration was different, and the Arduino
board was connected to the PCMCIA adapter, which was causing also
problems: kind of unresponiveness when reading via /dev/ttyUSB from the
board, after plugging it into a native USB port, the problems
dissapeared)

I don't know exactly the package where the problem is, but probably
something related to udev?

[Bug 235670] [NEW] Unable to print to parallel port

2008-05-29 Thread Jason Schindler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

It appears that the solution to this problem has been known for
sometime, but I just experienced it with a fresh install (and update) of
Kubuntu 8.04. I was unable to find the bug on launchpad... hopefully
this one isn't a duplicate.

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04

After installing my Brother HL-2070N using the deb packages provided by
Brother, the printer was visible in CUPS and I was able to complete the
configuration of it (change the uri from the default 'usb' to
'parallel:/dev/lp0'). When I attempted to print a test page, the job
was immediately placed on 'Hold' and would never print. Using the CUPS
web configuration tool, I saw the following message next to the printer
name:

/dev/lp0: Permission denied

I found the solution in the following forum posts:

http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3089184.msg106277

After updating the /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules file from:

# Printers and Parallel devices
SUBSYSTEM==printer,   GROUP=lp
SUBSYSTEM==ppdev,GROUP=lp
SUBSYSTEM==usb, KERNEL==lp[0-9]*,   GROUP=lp

--TO--

# Printers and Parallel devices
SUBSYSTEM==printer,   OWNER=lp, GROUP=lp
SUBSYSTEM==ppdev, GROUP=lp
SUBSYSTEM==usb, KERNEL==lp[0-9]*,   OWNER=lp, GROUP=lp

I was able to print without issue.

2008-05-29 Thread Arne Goetje
Sorry for the late reply...

I think for now it looks OK. As we have more Malayalam fonts to choose
from with this version, we may need to select a different font as
default for the -core package. This should be decided by the community
IMHO and can be adjusted later.

oh, now I see that you are using 'madwifi' as driver for your card. That

[Bug 36251] Re: Unreadable Font Size for GDM Login/Password

2008-05-29 Thread Dick Dunbar
I'm using a different theme, happygnome-list, but I tried the equivalent
of the fix suggested by Sun Wukong. My username and password entries
are now a good, readable size, but to accomplish this I had to set the
font size to 48! I believe that the original font size of 14 in the
.xml file is reasonable, and that something other than the font size
setting is causing this problem. In this theme, there are several other
boxes where the font is unreadably small, and I found no way to increase
their sizes. There are three boxes along the lower left side of the
screen, which I think from looking at the xml code are options,
session, and last language. They are almost legible, but not quite.
In addition, there are two boxes below the username/password entry box,
which I think are labeled OK and Cancel, again based on examining
the xml code. Furthermore, the username list on the upper left part of
the screen is also tiny. All the other text on the screen is readable
size, things like the enter password prompt, the caps lock is on
message and so forth. The items which are rendered unreadably small are
those of type button, list, and entry. I could find nothing in
the xml code that would affect the font size of the button or list
items, and the one thing that could be affected required a ridiculously
large font size value to be made readable.

[Bug 235659] Re: After full upgrade, nothing works.

2008-05-29 Thread Nick Ellery
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 144322] Re: interlacing broken in gutsy on radeon/ati open source driver

2008-05-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
In reading the comments and the upstream bug reports, it doesn't sound

[Bug 69896] Re: dead_circumflex and dead_diaeresis don't work in KDE applications

2008-05-29 Thread augustin
I just have the exact same bug with the circumflex and the diaerisis within KDE
applications.
Everything was working fine with Kubuntu 7.10 and 8.04, but two days ago, there
was an upgrade (including some Qt libs) and since, I have this problem. It
appears to me that the upgrade changed something.

I use English as my main language, but also regularly use Chinese and
French. I'd like to keep english as my main locale.

# cat /etc/environment
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games

[Bug 235679] [NEW] Asks for same password twice

2008-05-29 Thread Hartog de Mik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

--[ Ubuntu release ]--
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

--[ version of package ]--
2:1.0.5-2ubuntu12

--[ Expected to happen ]--
When booting my laptop ubuntu is to ask the luks passwords of each and every
file system (2 in my case) just once inside of usplash and hide all the
nastiness it involves

--[ What happened instead ]--
When I boot my laptop it asks for the password of the root file system in
usplash and then switches back to a console.

There it asks for the password of the swap device. luksopen works like a
charm and I get a message saying something allong the lines of
/dev/sda5 contains data - cryptsetup failed.

Then it asks for the password of the swap device again. cryptsetup does
its thing again, gives the same complaint and the machine boots
perfectly with swap enabled.

Given the fact that this is a laptop, I have to boot daily. You can
understand this is becoming somewhat of a nuisance.

I would like to give you the full message(s) of what ever happens in
boot. However /var/log/boot is empty (e.g.: It states (Nothing has been
logged yet.)) and scrolling through the giant list of boot messages on
TTY8 is impossible. It will no longer adhere to the shift-pg up command.

--[ Request ]--
Could you please:
a) Tell me how to turn on boot logging so that I can supply a more detailed and
complete description of this bug
b) Start investigating the problem.

Many thanks in advance,
Hartog de Mik
