Re: [Bug 239299] Re: nowait config option in inetd.conf is error with xinetd

2008-06-12 Thread Tim Richardson
I installed xinetd after swat. However, when I resinstall swat, I see
the message you refer to.
It's isn't at all helpful though. The Debian readme doesn't address the
problem.
The nowait.400 syntax doesn't match anything in the man page for
xinetd.conf and the man page for inetd.conf is now ... gone :-)
Even the man page for inetd.conf (via google) doesn't mention the
meaning of a period after nowait.

So I will just delete the .400

Did you get the following when installing swat?

 - IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR XINETD USERS --
The following line will be added to your etcinetd.conf file:

 swat\t\tstream\ttcp\tnowait.400\troot\tusrsbintcpd\tusrsbinswat

If you are indeed using xinetd, you will have to convert the
above into etcxinetd.conf format, and add it manually. See
 usrsharedocxinetdREADME.Debian for more information.

[Bug 237688] Re: [SRU] openldap 2.4.9 from 8.04.1.

2008-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
The changelog is ok now, but the upload contains plenty of changes in
debian/ which are not appropriate for an SRU:

- you removed the previous hardy-updates changelog, and has plenty of other
changelogs from Debian
- debian/compat got bumped to 6
- still adds the build dependency heimdal-dev
- adds a Conflicts: libldap2
- a lot of added/removed patches which seem unrelated, e. g. the hurd fix
- changes the init script; conffile changes on stable updates should be avoided
in general, unless absolutely necessary

In general it's best to leave the packaging as it is, and just do
uupdate and adopt the patches as necessary.

This was fixed in nagios3 (upstream fixed the configure script so that
it no longer ignores --use-mail, no need to add mailx | mailutils as
build dep). I backport the fix for nagios2.

Here is the debdiff with the configure fix (backported from Nagios 3)
and fixup of the cfg-commands.cfg.diff file so that it doesn't break
with the new contents. Not sure this is SRU material though -- the
problem being in a configuration file, in an off-by-default

[Bug 234732] Re: Upgrade gutsy - hardy, faled for packages: samba-common, smbclient, ubuntu-desktop, bash-completion

2008-06-12 Thread J Posey
My attempt to upgrade hung at samba-common. After restarting the system
boots, accepts user-name and password, but once desktop is up, keyboard
is no longer decoded properly (some keys send nothing, others
gibberish). Mouse still works.

This problem is critical in my opinion. If an upgrade can completely
disable an end-users desktop, the OS is not ready for everyday users. I
regret having recommended it based on experience prior to now.

[Bug 239627] [NEW] package mysql-server None [modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/mysql-server.list] failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-06-12 Thread Charles Marslett
Public bug reported:

The installation was triggered as a requirement for installing mythtv.

The package version was mysql-server 5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1.

After manually initializing the files and mythtv (which sort of worked -
I had to do a sudo bash to get the password prompt from the mysql
command to work, from a # prompt), repeating the install appears to
work.

[Bug 234917] Re: openoffice.org metapackage shouldn't depend on the huge, rarely needed filter-binfilter package (provides legacy StarOffice formats support)

2008-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Some comments. First, Suggests: are almost worthless in Ubuntu, or with
graphical package managers in general. If we don't install it by
default, such plugins basically don't exist from an user's POV. What
should happen is that if you try to open such an old document, OO.o
tells you to install the missing package (and preferably provide a Do
that now button). I'm fine with changing that in intrepid, but it's not
at all an appropriate change for stables. Please revert it for the hardy
update.

[Bug 202164] Re: [hardy] displayconfig-restore causes X to crash

2008-06-12 Thread DavorCubranic
I ran into an identical traceback on my machine after I installed
Kubuntu 64-bit Hardy. In my case, however, I made zero customizations to
the out-of-the box drivers or xorg.conf, and my sole graphics card is
the integrated X200 that comes with ATI's Xpress200 chipset.

Interestingly, there were no errors in xorg.log, only in kdm.log.
(Probably related to the fact that I was getting the login screen, but
after I logged in, the screen would go black for a few seconds and I
would be kicked back out to the login screen.) Failsafe login worked,
and once I disabled the executable bit on displayconfig-restore regular
login to the default KDE desktop started working too. (Except that my
wide-screen Dell monitor is not recognized and the Monitor and Display
module in the system settings cannot load.)

[Bug 237317] Re: /usr/share/doc/libcupsys2/changelog.gz: broken symbolic link to `../libcupsys2/changelog.gz'

2008-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
I'm still confused:

$ wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/c/cupsys/libcupsys2_1.3.7-1ubuntu3_amd64.deb
$ dpkg -c libcupsys2_1.3.7-1ubuntu3_amd64.deb | grep changelog.gz
-rw-r--r-- root/root 8733 2008-04-01 22:32
./usr/share/doc/libcupsys2/changelog.gz

It's not a symlink, it's a regular file as it should be. Also after
installation. The postinst doesn't do any symlinking. So I honestly
don't know what went wrong on your system, and how to reproduce it.

[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-06-12 Thread harold
Tristan: yes, I set the computer's timezone also to Europe/Amsterdam.

I got things working though. I use wicd on this computer in stead of
networkmanager (problems with an atheros adapter in NM). I was using the
wired connection, which was not the default connection. Because of this,
after log in, there was no internet connection until I selected the
wired interface. After changing the wired connection to default, the
weather information shows up automatically after reboot.

2008-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
tanager: you have a different problem then; the DVD you inserted wasn't
blank, it already had an UDF file system. The problem seems to be that
it cannot be read properly (all the I/O errors), which might indicate a
hardware problem (cabling), or more likely a linux kernel bug if it
works fine under Windows.

And it's even worse, now I can't do anything with firefox, if I have
many valued tab open, and starts to stall and I exit with 'save and
quit' then restarting firefox cause to open the tabs and maybe it's ok
for few clicks works very fast, then it does again, so I should avoid

Re: [Bug 239299] Re: nowait config option in inetd.conf is error with xinetd

2008-06-12 Thread Tim Richardson
I installed xinetd after swat. However, when I resinstall swat, I see
the message you refer to.
It's isn't at all helpful though. The Debian readme doesn't address the
problem.
The nowait.400 syntax doesn't match anything in the man page for
xinetd.conf and the man page for inetd.conf is now ... gone :-)
Even the man page for inetd.conf (via google) doesn't mention the
meaning of a period after nowait.

So I will just delete the .400

[Bug 234953] Re: after some usage firefox starts stall loading any pages

2008-06-12 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Hmmm, it seems there are some pages which can help to trigger this
bug: after visiting them the browser can't resolve names anymore, at
least it stalling on Looking up HOSTNAME messages in the status line
or simply just waiting, maybe this is the reason for doing bad things
again after savequit and then restart. Unfortunately I have not idea
what pages does these exactly and it's 100% to retrigger easily, but it
seems some pages inside facebook.com can do the trick (but not always,
some day it's quite sure, then it's no problem at all for a while)

[Bug 73358] Re: dhcp -- static ip doesn't change when changing location

2008-06-12 Thread Stijn Gysemans
As i filed this bug in bugzilla, I also got this issue.
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537924

Please describe the problem:
When changing location, with location A set to static ip, location B to dhcp,
it does not automatically retrieve a new ip address for location B.
You need to manually run sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to NM applet
2. Set current settings to static ip
3. press the save current configruation as a location, name it 'config A'
4. Set current settings to a dhcp ip
5. press the save current configruation as a location, name it 'config B'
6. select location 'config A' from the list
7. select 'apply configuration as current location'
8. press close
9. check that your ip is set to the static ip you've setup. This will be the
case
10. Go to NM applet
11. Select 'config B' as a location
12. select 'apply configuration as current location'
13. click close

Actual results:
you'll see that your router does NOT automatically give you a new ip. The
command sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart must be run

Expected results:
The program should automatically run the command 14. The command sudo
/etc/init.d/networking restart

Does this happen every time?
Yes

[Bug 235282] Re: Every second number disappears in (tiny) dmesg output (in initrd.img)

2008-06-12 Thread Steve Beattie
I've verified that this behavior exists in klibc-util's dmesg in version
1.5.7-4ubuntu3 released in Hardy, and that it is fixed in version
1.5.7-4ubuntu4 in hardy-proposed. I've not otherwise exercised klibc to
verify that there are no regressions.

** Description changed:

Note: An equivalent bug report is filed as Debian Bug#483186 at
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=483186

Every now and then, we come across a machine which is unable to mount
the root filesystem for whatever reasons, and get stuck at the busybox
initrd environment, from which we can run dmesg to diagnostic what went
  wrong.

To our dismay, in recent months (or years?), dmesg result come out like
this, with lots of missing numbers. For example, from a test machine
booting Ubuntu 8.04 hardy (with an upgraded kernel):

[0.000] Linux version 2.6.2-1-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc
version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #1 SMP Thu May 2 0:0:4 UTC 20 (Ubuntu
2.6.2-1.2ubuntu6-generic)
  [0.000] BIOS-provided physical RAM map:
  [0.000] BIOS-e80: - 00e00 (usable)
  [0.000] BIOS-e80: 00e00 - 00a00 (reserved)

But it is supposed to look like this:

[0.00] Linux version 2.6.25-1-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc
version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #1 SMP Thu May 22 05:01:49 UTC 2008
(Ubuntu 2.6.25-1.2ubuntu6-generic)
  [0.00] BIOS-provided physical RAM map:
  [0.00] BIOS-e820: - 0009e000 (usable)
  [0.00] BIOS-e820: 0009e000 - 000a (reserved)

This caused quite a bit of problem when we trying to diagnose kernel
oops or panics since the addresses are all wrong.

Initially, we thought it had something to do with memory corruption from
the kernel Oops. But later, we noticed this phenomenon happens even for
cases without a kernel oops, say, perhaps we just got root=/dev/sda7
  written wrong.

So, we decided to investigate, and eventually came to the realization
that the dmesg in initrd.img in Ubuntu (and Debian) nowadays come not
from busybox but klibc-utils, and running /usr/lib/klibc/bin/dmesg on a
fully booted system exhibit the same bug.

Checking the source code, we found the code used to strip out [0-7]
that prefixes every kernel message (See klogd(8)) is somewhat incorrect.
So, with a bit of hacking, we got that fixed. :-) A patch is attached.
Just drop it in debian/patches/20_dmesg_dropped-digits.patch and
  repackage! :-)

We have verified the output of this fixed dmesg identical to that of
  util-linux dmesg.

  Further thoughts:

We checked out klibc source using:
  git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/libs/klibc/klibc.git

And noticed it is an upstream bug since dmesg.c was first added on Mon
  Aug 20 19:57:50 2007 +0200 as commit
  9c5a7acda064daa7482148b5a45ee3b7ed39356c

As to why this bug wasn't discovered sooner... I don't know. Perhaps
very few people use the tiny dmesg in klibc-utils for diagnostic
purposes? And before that, Ubuntu (and Debian) uses the dmesg module in
busybox, which exhibits no such bug?

  Cheers,

[Bug 32357] Re: Installer doesn't recognise SATA disks as primary.

2008-06-12 Thread iain
I have the same problem on AMD64 box with a single IDE drive where the
installation completes and then won't boot, hanging at waiting for root
fllesystem.
The installer sees my IDE drive as a SCSI but i suspect the boot process fails
to see a non existant SCSI drive and then hangs.
If I add a SATA drive and install there it will boot OK but will not report the
presence of the IDE drive.

[Bug 237688] Re: [SRU] openldap 2.4.9 from 8.04.1.

2008-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
The changelog is ok now, but the upload contains plenty of changes in
debian/ which are not appropriate for an SRU:

- you removed the previous hardy-updates changelog, and has plenty of other
changelogs from Debian
- debian/compat got bumped to 6
- still adds the build dependency heimdal-dev
- adds a Conflicts: libldap2
- a lot of added/removed patches which seem unrelated, e. g. the hurd fix
- changes the init script; conffile changes on stable updates should be avoided
in general, unless absolutely necessary

In general it's best to leave the packaging as it is, and just do
uupdate and adopt the patches as necessary.

[Bug 230624] Re: logout crash kubuntu 8.10 (kde3) lifebook S7010

2008-06-12 Thread ricardisimo
I'm not sure if my issue is the same, but if i log out of the only
active account, I get a black screen, with evidently no way to get back
to X. Soft reboot is not possible, so far as I can tell. If I have two
accounts open and log out of one, I get the login screen, as I imagine I
should.

I'm not currently on the computer in question, but it is Kubuntu 8.04. Here's
the lspci for the card from one of my recent forum postings:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000]

And here's lshw from the same thread:

clock: 66MHz

I believe I'm running nvidia-glx. Resolution is 1280*1024.

I'll be at work tomorrow and will gladly post whatever files anyone
needs with regards to this. Thank you in advance for any help you can

[Bug 225749] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD fails to boot when RTL8102E LAN chip is enabled - with modprobe abnormal exit on ICH8M laptop

2008-06-12 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
So, since the -19 kernel does not fully fix the issue, the bug status is still
in progress... However, I think it's wrong that the importance is still
undecided...
According to the rules in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance, it seems the
importance should be set to Medium. I'm changing the importance now.
