[Bug 248864] Re: pdf printing stopped working in gutsy

2008-07-20 Thread Matthew Arnold
Turns out I was mistaken, it is not a bug as such, but it is a "feature"
that I feel should be changed and/or have improved error reporting.

Essentially I was caught out by the dialog retaining the previous print
range. I did not spot it because the start page had been set very high,
so instead of some printing I got nothing.

I see no advantage to having things this way, and it is certainly a
nuisance to me. Also if an error dialog was created instead of a non-
descriptive log entry it would be helpful.

Now I'm not sure if the problem lies with evince or cups-pdf, but is it
possible to have the print page range reset after a successful print?

[Bug 195200] Re: OpenOffice 2.3 freezes when Macro-function needs JRE

2008-07-20 Thread Zied ALAYA
I m running Ubuntu 8.04, fully updated, and open office 2.4.1.
I insert a picture in wirter, right click the picture.
when I choose macro I got the same error: I got an error saying:

Then I cannot get rid of the error - pressing [ok] brings up a new

[Bug 250433] [NEW] Clarify "Save a copy" grayed out

2008-07-20 Thread Arno Teigseth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Would it be possible for evince to somehow explain _why_ it cannot print
or save a document, instead of just graying out the "Save a copy" menu
item?

I know I can just right-click a PDF link and "Save as...", it's just
confusing when I don't get to know why I can't save the document...

This could maybe be done with a pop-up [dialog], a "tooltip", changed
title bar text, some info showing up in the Properties window, an
information bar... ?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109429 says:

"Could it be due to the access/copy rights on specific pdf files you're viewing?
you can override these restrictions by setting
"/apps/evince/override_restrictions" with gconf-editor."

[Bug 250432] [NEW] force version doesn't work in Hardy

2008-07-20 Thread Ilan Tal
Public bug reported:

In going from Open Office 2.4.0 to 2.4.1, there is a problem with Calc with
Sheet names in Hebrew. When the sheet is active all is OK, but when you press
on another sheet, the inactive sheets don't display the Hebrew characters
properly.
Since I know 2.4.0 works properly, and I don't know of any work around for
2.4.1, I wanted to drop back to 2.4.0.
The Synaptic Package Manager has a nice feature under the Package menu to force
the version. This is just what I need, so I was happy to find it. I highlighted
the calc package, pressed the force version menu option and found 2 choices:
2.4.0 and 2.4.1. Beautiful - I chose 2.4.0 and told it to force it back. It
told me that I had to force most of the other Open Office suite back to 2.4.0.
OK, no problem - do that as well.
I went and executed the command and it removed my Open Office completely! Not
exactly what I was looking for. I fixed broken packages and I was back to 2.4.1
with its problems in Hebrew names.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Ilan

[Bug 250424] [NEW] mouse driver in xorg completely misreads the microsoft comfort mouse 3000

2008-07-20 Thread Justin Sunseri
Public bug reported:

Using the mouse driver in my xorg.config there are several issues with
the microsoft comfort mouse 3000. I'm sure this will apply to other
micrsoft mouse with tilt wheels. Here is the input device section for
my mouse

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Name" "Microsoft Microsoft Optical Mouse with Tilt Wheel"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Buttons" "8"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

This mouse has what i count to be 8 buttons. right click, left click,
middle click (scroll wheel), scroll wheel up, scroll wheel down, tilt
wheel right, tilt wheel left, and thumb button. This makes 8 buttons.
Looking at the output from xev it says the thumb button is button 9.
This is one button too many. Also in xev the tilt wheel left and right,
what i think are buttons 6 and 7, cause no events. This is confirmed by
these two comments in a different bug report. while this was mentioned
in the bug it was not what the bug was about.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/52288/comments/8
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/52288/comments/9
Also looking at xev i have noticed that pressing in the middle click
does not always fire an event. I know I really need to stop buying
microsoft mice but they are always so attractively priced at the store.

I am using ubuntu 8.04 plus all updates in proposed

Re: [Bug 250178] Re: browsers crush pretty damn often

2008-07-20 Thread Peter
Hi

When installing ubuntu, I must have modified sth I should not have
touched as practically ALL browsers went mad, and programs such as Amaya
did not work at all. I have been working with ubuntu for half a year and
have never experienced anything like that. All my tries made the
situation worse.

Now I reformatted the partition for ubuntu and reinstalled it, carefully
picking components. Everything seems to be fine for the moment.

Thanks for the quick answer and sorry to have bothered you in vain.

Best wishes,

[Bug 250421] [NEW] hald-addon-cpufreq interfers with system settings / switches scaling governor

2008-07-20 Thread Sebastian Kemper
Public bug reported:

Hi all,

I was installing Ubuntu Hardy LTS yesterday and had some issues whit
frequency scaling. What I wanted to do was enable the conservative
governor and be done with it.

I tried both setting the governor with /etc/sysfs.conf (after installing
sysfsutils) and setting it "manually" with /etc/rc.local. But everytime
I booted I ended up with the ondemand governor (which for some reason
doesn't work properly on my laptop). I also disabled powernowd but that
didn't help.

When I echoed conservative into the scaling-governor file it did change,
though. But when I disconnected my ac adapter it went back to ondemand.
Plugging the ac back in it was changed to performance.

Somehow it doomed on me that this was the handy-work of hald-addon-
cpufreq. After removing the file 10-cpufreq.fdi from /usr/share/hal/...
it wasn't loaded anymore and my issue was done with.

Given that Ubuntu by default uses powernowd (which apparently changes
the governor as well) I think this should be the default (hald-addon-
cpufreq shouldn't be loaded) as it's going to interfere with any other
application that changes the cpufreq governor.

This may be related to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/198869

Kind regards
Sebastian

[Bug 248117] Re: [solved] Kdenlive crash on kubuntu 8.04

2008-07-20 Thread FuocoTools
well it's true on the theory but on the practice it's not so ,

because when i have installed kubuntu i have tested :

1 no compiz WITHOUT composite0 =crash

2 no compiz WITH composite0 before updating* =no crash ;
after updating = CRASH

3 no compiz WITH composite and WITH other 2 libraries and it doesn't
crash

4 WITH compiz WITH those packages = NO crash

so as you can see from this that packages are required , i don't know what
library or files they install but they fix problem with and with and without
compiz...on kubuntu other users have tested and they , in ubuntu , require to
disable compiz

*updating

[Bug 250417] [NEW] remote desktop refuses connections

2008-07-20 Thread mattismyname
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vino

I enable remote desktop, restart gdm (just to be sure), log back in and
then try to connect to the desktop from another machine using vncviewer.
I get a connection refused. Looking at a process listing on the ibex
box I see no vino-server process running. If I manually launch vino-
server, I am able to connect just fine from the other machine.

I believe the issue is somehow that vino-server is not being started
automatically when I login.

[Bug 165093] Re: Xorg crashes with /usr/bin/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x1e1)

2008-07-20 Thread Evance Mok
I was able to reproduce this problem pretty easily using the method
described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nspluginwrapper/+bug/241145

It *seemed* to only happen with the flashplugin-nonfree package
installed.

I added 'Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"' to my xorg.conf file and I HAVE
NOT been able to reproduce this issue. It seems to have solved the
issue I was having that looked similar to this.

My configuration:
Hardy (AMD64)
fglrx (latest ubuntu package)
flashplugin-nonfree
compiz enabled

Here's the Xorg.0.log I was getting previously:

[Bug 250229] Re: automount not working anymore

2008-07-20 Thread uqbar
In "System Settings -> General -> Notifications" there's no "Storage Media
Notifications".
All items here cannot be deleted or modified. Is this a bug?
Then I went to "Add" and added everything was there with "dolphin %u" as an
action. I applied the changes and magically I saw the things happening again.
The only problems are:
- how can I check the other actions (that seem not to work)?
- why had I to add all those actions?

Thanks so far forthe support.

[Bug 248600] Re: nvclock causes corrupt screen + hard lock

2008-07-20 Thread Vanessa Ezekowitz
For the benefit of anyone who comes across this bug while searching,
I gave up on nvclock for now, but I've found a workaround.

Of all things, nvidia-settings did the job. After adding the above "coolbits"
option to my xorg.conf and rebooting, nvidia-settings gave me some new 2D and
3D (really performance levels 0 and 1) clock settings to tweak.

So..I started playing with the 3D clocks (after turning the Overclock
checkbox on). At first, the controls were useless - I would turn a
setting down a bit, hit "apply", and the setting would revert to the
default (325 MHz GPU and 700 MHz memory clock, in the case of my 6600).
That is, until I got it in my mind to turn the GPU clock all the way
down and applied it. Lo and behold, the setting stuck.

I then proceeded to try other GPU clock settings (all of which worked),
and eventually back to 325, and then turned the Memory clock down to 680
MHz -- bah! that didn't take -- it jumped back to 700 MHz. So I tried
a little lower, and the same thing. After a few more tries, I found a
spot somewhere in the mid 400's that caused it to jump to 502 MHz and
stick there when I hit "apply".

So I guess on this 6600, the GPU clock is pretty flexible, but the
memory clock has only a few settings that it likes.

So, the setting that works is 325 MHz for the GPU clock and a 502 MHz
memory clock. I then set the "2D" clocks to the same values and they
also stuck.

Finally, to make the setting permanent, I created a new file:
~/.kde/Autostart/MySettings.sh

...and put these lines into it:

#!/bin/bash
nvidia-settings -l
nvidia-settings -a GPUOverclockingState=1 -a GPU2DClockFreqs=62,700 -a
GPU3DClockFreqs=81,700
nvidia-settings -a GPUOverclockingState=1 -a GPU2DClockFreqs=325,502 -a
GPU3DClockFreqs=325,502

I then rebooted and sure enough, the clock settings stuck. nvidia-
settings still shows the default powermizer clocks, but under the clock
frequencies section, the values were as I set them.

Of all programs, it was glxgears (maximized to one screen) with OpenGL
sync-to-vblank turned off that made the artifacts appear the worst, so
that was what I used to test with. The values returned are about 10% or
so lower than normal, but I expected that with the slightly slower
memory clock.

The artifacts are now gone, thank G*d.

Attached is an image showing what the glitches looked like before, in
case anyone else needs to sort out the same issue.

[Bug 235062] Re: gstreamer lame mp3 encoder produced different files than lame commandline encoder

2008-07-20 Thread Maverick88
I have filed a similar bug report.

See Bug Report 250407 -- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gst-
plugins-ugly-multiverse0.10/+bug/250407

gstreamer is not properly encoding MP3's with the right VBR bit rates
(corresponding to the options specified).

The problem is NOT with gst-plugins-bad. but in the gstreamer0.10
-plugins-ugly-multiverse package.

The culprit is version 0.10.6 of the gstreamer library file
libgstlame.so found in the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
package. If you downgrade this library to 0.10.5, the problem is fixed.

To downgrade to a working version (0.10.5) simply downgrade the
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse package from version
0.10.6-0ubuntu1 to version 0.10.5-2. Once you downgrade, gstreamer works
properly and produces MP3's with the right bit rate.

See See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=608034&page=3

Also note that this bug has been reported upstream. See
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=498004
But the bug still has
not been fixed!! Maybe someone at Ubuntu will need to propose a patch to
the Gnome folks.

PLEASE increase the URGENCY from low to MEDIUM or HIGH.
This bug affects Sound Juicer and Rythmbox which now FAIL to encode MP3's with
the proper VBR bit rate using the DEFAULT settings provided by Ubuntu Hardy
Heron!!

[Bug 250407] [NEW] GStreamer does NOT properly encode MP3's (Also affects Sound Juicer and Rhythmbox)

2008-07-20 Thread Maverick88
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

gstreamer is not properly encoding MP3's with the right VBR bit rates
(corresponding to the options specified).
This ALSO affects Rhythmbox and Sound Juicer since they BOTH use gstreamer!!
You don't get MP3's with the VBR Bit rate you expect.

For example, if you run gstreamer in Terminal with the following
options, you get an MP3 with VERY low bitrate:

"gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=foo.wav ! audio/x-raw-
int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc vbr-quality=6 ! id3v2mux !
filesink location=foo.mp3"

(This also corresponds to the following default options specified in Sound
Juicer and Rhythmbox and you get the same UNEXPECTED results:
audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc mode=0 vbr-quality=0 !
id3v2mux)

Running LAME with the same options in the terminal gives you a much
higher VBR bitrate AS EXPECTED.

e.g. lame -V 2 foo.wav foo.mp3

Another example, is running gstreamer with the following options that
should give you much higher bit rates:

"gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=foo.wav !
audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc vbr=4 vbr-quality=2 !
xingmux ! id3v2mux ! filesink location=foo.mp3"
It gives me MP3's with a low VBR of 48 bits/sec. Very bad. Defintely not 192
bits/sec VBR!

The culprit is version 0.10.6 of the gstreamer library file
libgstlame.so. To downgrade to a working version (0.10.5) simply
downgrade the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse package from version
0.10.6-0ubuntu1 to version 0.10.5-2. Once you downgrade, gstreamer
works properly and produces MP3's with the right bit rate.

You can download the 0.10.5-2 libraries here:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...ultiverse0.10/

See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=608034&page=3

Also note that this bug has been reported upstream. See
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=498004
But the bug still has not been fixed!! Maybe someone at Ubuntu will need to

[Bug 73298] Re: update-manager doesn't remove old CD from sources.list

2008-07-20 Thread Hew
Thanks for your comment. This report was closed due to a number of factors:
1) Edgy and Breezy are no longer supported
2) There had been no comments and no activity since the day it was reported
3) The ubuntuforums thread linked to the description died after a week
4) There is nothing to suggest the bug exists in current Ubuntu releases

If this bug still exists in the latest Ubuntu, please let us know so
that we can confirm this is a valid report and correctly keep it
reopened. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 249328] Re: Unhelpful SQUASHFS error messages

2008-07-20 Thread Connor Imes
One thing about just getting an error message like "An error occured while
reading the CDROM" is that while it can tell a user that something has gone
wrong, it's not very helpful. A user knows something is wrong by seeing those
other errors, too.
One reason for having long, descriptive, and often cryptic errors is that they
can help developers and the more experienced users actually see what is going
wrong - a major benefit of using open source software. This allows people to
use debugging methods and seek more in depth help with their problems in order
to track down the source.

For example:
[00123.173770] SQUASHFS error: Unable to read cache block [12345678:141e]
I believe that the left bracket number is a tick count of the kernel, the
middle stuff is the error, and the right bracket number is a hexadecimal valued
block number of the cd that is corrupted. While cds don't generally get fixed,
we can at least see what is going on and where. Though these specifics aren't
very useful to us, a developer might know what is stored around that area of
the disc, and if it were a problem on their end, it can hopefully be fixed.
Don't get your hopes up on this one, it appears that you just have a bad cd,
either because of a corrupted image file or just a bad burn.

It is not likely that the installer can handle such errors since the
disc itself is corrupted, and the best way to proceed with a corrupt
installer is to just stop where it is and not risk further damage to the
system. Retrying the install would not be helpful and could in fact be
harmful.

Finally, with errors like that, a user can search for them on google (or
their search engine of choice) and see what other people have to say
about it, and thus figure out what the problem is, and possibly what to
do about it. This is part of the community support that comes with open
source software, and is generally not available with proprietary
software.

I will leave this bug report as "Incomplete" for now, feel free to
continue discussion.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ egrep '^sho[[:alpha:]]{2}s$' /usr/share/dict/words

Your pattern didn’t match two characters from the [:alnum:] class, but
rather any two of the characters “ahlp:” (just a normal bracket

[Bug 232173] Re: EeePC internal microphone does not function out-of-the-box with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

2008-07-20 Thread Fabio Ornellas
Hello,

I've stresses a lot on the topic. My findings:

* Asus made some custom modifications on the snd-hda-intel driver to make it
work on the EEE PC 900. However, such modifications were not ported to Vanilla
kernels, and thus not for Ubuntu. As far as I could find, here is Asus'
version: http://update.eeepc.asus.com/p900/misc/ . It is an old 2.6.21.4
kernel, but works.
* I read at forums that a "m-a a-i alsa" would do the trick (plus passing
"model=auto" to the module). As a matter of fact, it does, partially. The mic
then works, however, alsamixer controls are not the same as the ones found at
the Asus driver. It lacks mic boost settings. Plus, Capture mixer must be set
to a value below 68/100, because high values simply distorts a LOT the
microphone. And at the end, if cpufreq is set to ondemand, skype can not work
properly without generating a LOT of clicks to the other side. This effect is
not seen on the factory Xandros, although I can't tell what is the cpufreq
setting there.

So, my best bet to fix this issue permanently is to merge Asus's changes
into mainstream kernel (or at least Ubuntu's). For now, "m-a a-i alsa"
will work as a partial fix.

[Bug 250402] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Movie Masher - web server advanced video editor online

2008-07-20 Thread Tree MendUs
Public bug reported:

URL: http://sourceforge.net/projects/moviemasher/
and
http://www.moviemasher.com/

Description:
Movie Masher is free software that can be installed on any web server to enable
advanced video editing features for end users. Like other open source
development projects, it benefits from ongoing community feedback and code
contributions.

The goal is to provide custom client-side user interfaces for a wide
range of third party, server-based video editing applications. The
controls that make up each interface can be easily skinned with new
graphics, arranged arbitrarily within shaded panels and even removed
entirely for simplified, single purpose interfaces.

Interactions between Movie Masher and the host application are strictly
limited, with an uncomplicated black box approach to data manipulation.
All data is formatted in straightforward XML, while media is optimized
using standard AV encodings.

The modules bundled with Movie Masher can be configured to provide both
simple and advanced effects, themes and transitions right out of the
box. Custom modules can also be developed to provide unique features,
and even new interface controls can be created.

[Bug 250403] [NEW] egrep not selecting all possible matches

2008-07-20 Thread Mike Sandman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grep

i wanted to find all 6-letter words starting with 'sho' and ending with
's'. should be simple enough, so i tried:

$ egrep '^sho.{2}s$' /usr/share/dict/words
shoals
shocks
shoe's
shoots
shop's
shores
shorts
shot's
shouts
shoves

then wanting to remove the words with apostrophes from the list, i
tried:

$ egrep '^sho[:alpha:]{2}s$' /usr/share/dict/words
shoals

yikes! what happen to the other words? then out of curiosity i tried a
few more things:

$ egrep '^sho[:lower:]{2}s$' /usr/share/dict/words
shores

using [:lower:] also only matched one word...but a different one. same
for [:upper:] which should have matched none.

$ egrep '^sho[:upper:]{2}s$' /usr/share/dict/words
shores

unless i am using this command wrong (possible, i am no expert here)
this seems like a bug either in code or documentation about how the
command is to work.

If you want cheese to work, you'll probably have to reload uvcvideo into

in MODULES didn't work for me.

Skype to my knowledge doesn't use the video4linux API, which is why that
works. Beyond that, no idea

[Bug 250396] [NEW] uninstalling KDE guidance power manager doesn't remove it from kicker

2008-07-20 Thread Philip Ashmore
Public bug reported:

[Bug 250394] [NEW] synaptic's category window forgets scroll position after applying changes

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: uswsusp

I have the preference "show package properties in the main window"

With the "sections" button selected I can see the package categories in

If I have to scroll down to select a category and then apply changes,
the selection is remembered but the scroll position is reset - it
shouldn't be.

[Bug 250387] [NEW] Installing uswsusp asks a pointless question

2008-07-20 Thread Philip Ashmore
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: uswsusp

lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1
KDE 3.5.9

In synaptic I selected uswsusp for installation.
When I clicked on the "Apply" button the "Applying changes" dialog's terminal
output window displays the following (please excuse me for any typos).

Configuring uswsusp
---

The swap file or partition that was found in uswsusp's configuration file
is not
active. In most cases this means userspace software suspend will not work
for
you and you will need to choose (or let uswsusp choose) another swap space.
In
some corner cases however, this can be what you want.

Continue without a valid swap space?

You can answer yes or no here the result is the same.
As it turns out, the uswsusp configuration logic couldn't handle a device
specified by UUID, but by the old /dev/sda5 way.
Modifying /etc/uswsusp.conf to use the old way solved the problem.

[Bug 250382] Re: synaptic cannot to synaptic when a dialog is displayed

2008-07-20 Thread Jonathan Thomas
This functionality is intentional. The preferences and filter dialogs are both
modal windows, which don't allow focus to return to the main window until they
are closed. You'll notice that you can't even bring back focus to the main
window by clicking on it.
Thanks for your bug report nonetheless, and please don't hesitate to report
bugs in the future.

[Bug 250386] [NEW] synaptic conflicts resolution not remembered when removing packages

2008-07-20 Thread Philip Ashmore
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1
KDE 3.5.9

This bug relates to

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/122064
[Wishlist] Removing software+dependencies in Synaptic is currently more
difficult than installing them

but goes one step further.

When installing a package, conflicts may occur, requiring previously installed
packages to be removed.
In my case I was trying out splashy (for uswsusp) and it conflicted with
kubuntu-artwork-usplash and usplash, requiring their removal.

When I (eventually) found out it didn't offer a solution to me not being
able to hibernate I removed it.

It would certainly help users if [synaptic / underlying packaging
system] had remembered the conflicting packages and offered to re-
install them.

A simple workarround but very shitty is to make "# sudo /etc/init.d

don't know when is exactly set up the locale during start and also don't
know how to make mldonkey-server to wait the system to do that (I came
from gentoo and his BSD-style config a year ago xD). If someone know how
to do, please post here, that will be the correct solution for the bug.
