[Bug 285317] [NEW] There are two element bind to Alt+C

Public bug reported:

It's not a bug, but I prefer to have two different keys for them. Or better to
say I prefer to press Alt+C to close, in ALL windows.

This timing workaround has also cropped up for me.
Don't know for how long, but i'm on 2.6.27-5-generic 64-bit, with a Core Duo

Could this be related to the CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 15000 nsec

[Bug 285319] [NEW] Nonfunctional USB ports during boot with AverMedia DVB-T dongle

2008-10-18 Thread Milan Knizek
Public bug reported:

1) Ubuntu Intrepid Beta

2) Current kernel - see the attached logs

3) When USB dongle of AverMedia DVB-T is plugged in notebook IBM
(Lenovo) Z60m before boot or restart, all usb devices are nonfunctional.
It does not help to unplug and plug the devices again (even flash disks,
what ever else).

4) USB devices should be properly recognised during start-up.

More information:

I tried five restarts of the notebook in a sequence with the dongle attached.
Only once it was recognised correctly.
Then, I unplugged the dongle, restarted, plugged the dongle - and it worked
flawlesly. Repeated five times to make sure.

With Hardy, having the dongle plugged in was never a problem during boot
(I use the notebook as a MythTV box).

Attached are log files.

 Hi,

[this comment has been falsely reported in bug #205536 too, i screwed up
myself when finding the right one, sorry… perhaps these bugs could be
 duplicates ?]

confirmed on latest Intrepid, AMD64 and Intel GMA X4500MHD (full HW info @
http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony/ ). This crash happens at EVERY login.
   * I run XFCE
   * with xfwm4 package uninstalled
   * and a symlink from /usr/bin/compiz to /usr/bin/xfwm
At login, session starts normally, then compiz crashes. If I open a terminal
and type compiz --replace, compiz is stable until next reboot : If I just
logout then login, compiz works flawlessly.
It could be because I've got an xrandr call in my session scripts, because of
 bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xbacklight/+bug/176888

→ when my session is GNOME, compiz works flawlessly and never crashes.
It's been crashing at login 100% of the time only since I use Xfce, but
I can't seem to find the reason of the crash.

[Bug 252341] Re: USB devices fail after suspend

2008-10-18 Thread SixedUp
I can verify this behavior on the latest Intrepid Beta, fully updated as
of the 18th October. I'm running on a Thinkpad T60p, using a USB-
attached wireless mouse, which works fine until suspend/resume, after
which neither it, nor any other device I plug into the USB ports works.

/var/log/kern.log gets a new line like this added to it every couple of
seconds:

Re: [Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2008-10-18 Thread Vici
Oh thanks for that Sixgun

That is a great help. I have downloaded the driver so will try this when
I get an hour free. Didn't crash last night at all but did many times
each night all week. Seems stupid that we have to go through this
rigmarole when there is a perfectly good driver available. I never ever
crashed before my upgrade to Hardy. Dapper worked faultlessly for years.

Thanks, with relief, Vici

sixgun wrote:
I believe about all you have to do to ensure the other drivers don't
 interfere is:
 sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Then add the following blacklist lines to the end of the file and save:
 blacklist rt2x00lib
 blacklist rt2x00pci
 blacklist rt2500pci
 blacklist rt2500usb

Also, if you have installed the CVS, go to
 System Administration Hardware Drivers
and make sure that the CVS driver isn't enable

To install ndiswrapper, open synaptic, and look up and install ndisgtk
After ndisgtk installed, go to System Administration Windows Wireless
 Drivers

Click the Install New Driver button.

Click the location box to open a dialog, and locate the proper .inf
 file.

The file you need, and the location may of course vary from mine, but in my
case the file I needed was
 Rt2500.inf
 and was located in
 /media/cdrom/Software/WinXP/

Select the Rt2500.inf file, click Open

 Click Install

If all is well, it should say Hardware present: Yes, and then you are
 free to configure the interface.

Be aware, if you have a pure ralink card, and your interface name was
ra0 or ra1, it will now be wlan0 or wlan1.

And if you plan to use WPA, good luck with that. I've been struggling
with getting my rt2500 to work and keep working with encryption on any
driver. My only luck has been a combination of using the latest CVS
driver, and Rutilt. Just make sure that you can access a network that is
completely unsecured, unencrypted, and has a visible ssid, before
 attempting WPA.

For an example : I can't type any text anywhere, ALT + F4 does not close

[Bug 285324] [NEW] Hibernate (suspend-to-disk) is very slow

2008-10-18 Thread eddiewould
Public bug reported:

As per bug #185703, on my SONY VAIO CR323 laptop hibernate is very slow,
even with the 2.6.27 kernel.

While I appreciate Linux is not Windows and does not aim to be,
comparisons should give an indication of what the hardware is capable
of. Hibernate in Windows takes approximately 7 seconds on this machine.

Under Kubuntu Linux 8.04, from selecting Suspend to Disk in
Knetworkmanager to the machine actually powering down takes 1:14
seconds. Interestingly enough, the HDD activity light is only on for 11
seconds of this time. Would be very interesting to know what it is doing
for the rest of the time :)

[Bug 256086] Re: Cannot remove a Thunderbird RSS folder

2008-10-18 Thread Greg Toombs
I am re-opening this bug. I've been adding more RSS feeds with normal-
looking titles, and several of them exhibit this behaviour: When I
initially try to subscribe, Thunderbird displays Verifying feed but
never gets past that. If I try to cancel and it asks me if I'm sure, the
yes/no choice doesn't affect the outcome. A broken folder is created,
often with a name with numbers in it, that you can't delete, and the
folder is empty and does not receive new RSS items from the feed. For
me, the following feeds have this behaviour (so far):

http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/rss/
http://rss.cbc.ca/lineup/topstories.xml

To contrast (if you can detect any difference) here are some feeds that do work:
http://www.projectcensored.org/feed/
http://www.democracynow.org/democracynow.rss
http://indymedia.org/en/main-features.rss
http://feeds.feedburner.com/Engrishdotcom

This behaviour is consistent and a little aggravating for an otherwise
acceptable aggregator.

[Bug 285327] [NEW] 802.11n (ath9k) intermittently hangs system

2008-10-18 Thread databubble
Public bug reported:

Applies to: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch) Release 8.10
(2.6.27-7-generic)

By hangs, I mean that the screen goes all one colour (blue or black
normally), and I can’t switch to a pseudo tty, and can’t toggle num/caps
lock keys on keyboard. Requires reboot, and frequently a hard reset
(power down, wait, power-up(

Initially, the system would hang very shortly after configuring the
connection. (Good news is, that I was able to create the connection,
associate with the AP, and do limited browsing / download, before the
system would hang.)

I discovered that the hangs got a lot less when I installed the Nvidia
accelerated graphics driver (version 177) using the Hardware Drivers
wizard.

The system would not crash at all, as long as I didn’t try to configure
the network.

I later discovered that the crashing became less frequent when I
configured the router to support a wide (40MHz) wireless-N channel.
With the router supporting a single, 20MHz, channel for wireless-N, or
in B/G mode only, the server would crash quite frequently.

Configured with a wide wireless-N channel, I can now often work for an
hour or two before the system freezes. I was even able to install the
325 updates that the system reported when I first connected to the
internet.

More frequent when router is configured for single (20MHz) channel, or
BG only, than n with 20MHz channel

For me this is the one bug that matters…. Kubuntu really needs to
support at least one wireless-N PCI card (I’ll buy which ever one it
is!) very well – without crashing and with very high throughput – for me
to use the OS.

Motherboard: Asus M3N78-VM (BIOS v0702)
Chipset: Nvidia GeForce 8200 (VBIOS 62.77.2f.00.00) 512MB RAM
Memory: 4GB (2 x OCZ 2G DDR2 PC2 6400)
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 64bit AM2 2MB
Disk: Seagate 1TB SATA II 32MB
CD: SAMSUNG 22X INTERNAL SATA DVDRW BK

Since this server is meant to do media streaming, and it’s location
doesn’t easily let me use wired Ethernet, I purchased a D-Link DWA-552
(Atheros AR5008) 802.11n PCI card. I chose this card after much
googling to determine that it is one of the most widely available and
inexpensive 802.11n cards that has a native Linux driver (ath9k).

[Bug 282207] Re: NM 0.7 does not set APN for ATT 3G connection

2008-10-18 Thread Li Hu
some more research:

/dev/ttyUSB2:
AT+CGDCONT=1, IP, ISP.CINGULAR
OK

AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,ISP.CINGULAR
OK

/dev/ttyUSB0:
AT+CGDCONT=1, IP, ISP.CINGULAR
ERROR

AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,ISP.CINGULAR
OK

set_apn() in nm-gsm-device.c (#216) executes that command with white spaces,
which would work for /dev/ttyUSB2 but not for /dev/ttyUSB0.
Removing those white spaces in set_apn() fixes the problem, however, I am not
sure if the white spaces are required for something else / some other devices.

Oct 17 23:01:27 X31 NetworkManager: info (ttyUSB0): powering up...
Oct 17 23:01:27 X31 NetworkManager: info Registered on Home network
Oct 17 23:01:27 X31 NetworkManager: info Associated with network: +COPS:
0,0,,2
Oct 17 23:01:27 X31 NetworkManager: info Connected, Woo!
with the rest working just fine.

However, the root cause of the problem is that /dev/ttyUSB0 is used and
not /dev/ttyUSB2, which would be the correct device. As HAL is telling
us that /dev/ttyUSB0 is the modem and not /dev/ttyUSB2 I assume either
this is a HAL bug or something else I don't know/understand.

For now I've attached a patch changing the AT command in nm-gsm-device.c

[Bug 275379] Re: Intrepid: KDM Sometimes Doesn't Appear

2008-10-18 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
This problem has started occurring again. This time though, one in about
five boots I get a message saying that Ubuntu has started in safe
graphics mode. If I click cancel on the safe graphics mode selection, X
starts up fine with the correct resolution and videocard driver.

I think the new problem is actually the same as this one. Before KDM
would take a very long time to restart and sit at a black screen. This
time it still sits at a blank screen but later comes up with the safe
graphics mode notice.

I'm attaching all of the log files I can think of.

[Bug 119309] Re: Live CD shutdown can't remove CD

2008-10-18 Thread Bryan Quigley
Apparently windows users will occasionally get this as well
(http://www.windowsbbs.com/hardware/77230-dvd-drive-opens-then-closes-
before-i-can-put-disk.html)

They said on there that the hardware might be going bad. If you have Windows
installed or dual-booted on any of the affected machines, see if you can
reproduce this on it, try ejecting with the physical button and through My
Computer.
If you don't have Windows, try the physical button when inside the BIOS (or
booting up).

Please try multiple times, as apparently it can work every now and then,
with and without media in the drive.

[Bug 285334] [NEW] missing japanese kanji in font 'Monospace'

2008-10-18 Thread Kevin Connor Arpe
Public bug reported:

Hi,

This bug is related to #149348.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/149348

I already reported to KDE/KWrite, but was told to report here instead.
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172638

Here is my issue:

Description:
Opened: 2008-10-12 10:09 Last Changed: 2008-10-13 21:08:56
Version: 4.5.9 (using 3.5.9, Kubuntu (hardy) 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7.1)
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.24-19-generic

Hi, When I use the font 'Monospace', the kanji (絵) is missing. It draws
as a square with black border and transparent fill -- a generic missing
character image.

See the Wiktionary page here: http://li.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E7%B5%B5

I noticed I can see it inside my Firefox browser, but the app title
(drawn by KDE libs) draws the kanji as a square when you open the Wiki
page above.

Try to copy and paste the kanji into KWrite to replicate.

I cannot find another fixed width font that has this kanji. I only know
courier, and it doesn't work there either.

This bug report may appear misdirected, but I don't know how to file a
bug for a font missing a character. Apologies in advance!

Otherwise, KWrite and KDE is dandy. Thanks for your hard work. I
appreciate it!

Kind regards,
Kevin Connor Arpe

Comment #1 Matthew Woehlke 2008-10-13 21:08:56
As you note, this is most likely not a kwrite bug, nor even a KDE bug, and
further may be no bug at all. I suggest taking this to your distribution's
support forums; most likely, you are simply missing a font that provides kanji,
or possibly fontconfig is misconfigured. Your distro will be better able to
guide you to ascertaining if there is truly a bug. Worth mentioning is that I
am able to see/use 絵 (and indeed, many other kanji) in kwrite without trouble.

[Bug 270303] Re: firefox (intrepid): your browser has been updated and needs to be restarted

2008-10-18 Thread Patrick Horn
I, too, have been experiencing this bug since upgrading to Intrepid last
weekend.

It seems the restart flag is stored in the firefox home directory.
(Due to issues I had with an older version of firefox 3 (haven't had
time to test this in intrepid), it kept hitting the hard disk after each
page so I keep a copy in /dev/shm/ once at each boot).

I understand that deleting my entire home directory and starting from
scratch would likely work, but I don't like to go through the hassle of
migrating bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords, etc.

In my opinion the bug here is that the restart flag should not be
getting saved in my firefox home directory, rather it should depend on
whether you upgraded while firefox was open.

I don't want to sound like I am trolling by suggesting this, but I personally
think this banner will lead to a few really slightly irritated users for a few
additional reasons:

(1) Restarting firefox does *not* save your session. it does not pop up with
restore your session and selecting Last Session from the session manager menu
chooses an older session.
A temporary workaround for the intrepid release would be to have the Restart
button run killall -9 firefox as that does save my session and therefore is
much preferable.

(2) The popup appears after a seemingly random number of seconds. This
causes everything on the page to shift around. My understanding is that
the intent is to be annoying but making the browser unusable by waiting
almost exactly the amount of time it takes me to click on a search
result is pretty annoying IMO.

I don't know what would cause this to happen but my suggestion is to fix
this below the bottom-most toolbar so it doesn't keep opening, closing,
and moving around

(3) The popup has a close button even though it will reopen after you
close it (and remain open in other tabs) This is likely to lead to user
frustration.

As you can see I am personally not very happy about this change. I can
understand you had reasons for adding this annoying nag banner (I remember
personally experiencing blank windows in FF 2.0 due to an upgrade), but it was
at least usable until I finish reading whatever tabs I have open).

But if you fix any one of these issues, or the root cause of being
stored on a per-user basis (as Roger says), I would consider this
problem solved.

[Bug 285335] [NEW] tpm-tools package wrongly depends on GTK-X11

2008-10-18 Thread Henryk Plötz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tpm-tools

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

Trying to install tpm-tools 1.3.1-2ubuntu1 on an Ubuntu Server
installation tries to pull in large swaths of GTK and X11 related
packages even though those tools don't have any graphical components at
all. As far as I can see the main reason is that it wrongly contains
libgtk2.0-dev in Build-Depends. In fact the only mention of GTK in the
whole source tree is in the control and dsc files and in the changelog.

I have confirmed that removing libgtk2.0-dev from Build-Depends and
rebuilding the package results in a working package.

(P.S.: The only related package that conceivably *could* depend on gtk
would be libtspi1, which is built from the trousers source package.
However, that optional dependency is disabled through ./configure
--with-gui=none at compile time.)

[Bug 284210] Re: no 'last good boot' entry in GRUB menu

2008-10-18 Thread Derek Kulinski
If I want to create something like that by hand, which files
directories I should copy to make sure it's operational?

The reason why I want to do it is that recent kernel updates are just
incremental updates to the same kernel. I personall experienced a
problem when latest update broke the WiFi support (it was fortunately
resolved in couple hours, but it was really troublesome)

I know it's devel relase so things like that are normal, that's why I want to
protect myself from that in the future,
My laptop doesn't have cd-rom and floppy drives, so if kernel would make system
unbootable, I'll have to play with PXE again :(

[Bug 277468] Re: Intrepid doesn't start, screen shows ... cubistic kubuntu

checked the system logs but it seems like they all start logging after

Any help is appreciated her - the bug definitely does exist, I could
post at least 50 other pictures (of instances) but they all look alike.

Thank you for your help in advance

[Bug 281580] Re: [Intrepid] New Bluetooth Wizard fails to pair with Apple Keyboard...

2008-10-18 Thread meba
I have removed Mactel support from this bugreport, because it's not
related to Apple devices only. I have Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse with the
same problem. And - NO problems with older Ubuntu having hidd. Just type
hidd --connect AA:BB... and everything works (forever).

New wizard behaviour:
- Connect device
- Mouse works
- Inactivity for few minutes
- Disconnected
- Try to pair again, pairing failed, which is displayed immediatelly, without
even trying.

I consider this critical and I believe this should focus on reenabling
hidd as the new stack seems to be buggy for advanced users. Really - can
it cause a lot of pain to beginners if they have hidd? I don't think so.

P.S.: No, please don't suggest fixing the bug in the wizard, this report
is intentionally provided as a request to REINTRODUCE HIDD.

[Bug 258073] Re: liveCD doesn't boot to gnome

2008-10-18 Thread Cricket
I was able to figure this out after installing debian lenny.

Can confirm that is a problem with rtl8180 that ships with 2.6.26
onwards and NetworkManager (currently running 0.6.6-2).

Dropping into runlevel 1 and doing /etc/init.d/network-manager start
causes the system to halt. If I do rmmod rtl8180 and then start network-
manager, then the system runs fine.

After modifying /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and blacklisting rtl8180 and
then booting normally works and the wireless card works with
ndiswrapper.

Will download intrepid nightly to confirm that this is the issue.

[Bug 248521] Re: vmmouse seems to register incorrect x, y values for mouseclick

2008-10-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
I've reviewed the upstream changes, and cherry picked out the code
changes for this bugfix, in hopes we can possibly squeeze this in for
the release. If not, I agree we'll want an SRU to get this in.

[Bug 234185] Re: Alternate CD cdrom-detect.postinst does not consider USB flash drive/key.

2008-10-18 Thread Evan Dandrea
As discussed on #ubuntu-installer:
17:29:46 evand hrm, cdrom-detect/ask-usb fails to account for the situation
where you have a CD in the drive as well
*snip*
17:34:13 evand Right now I have an Ubuntu image on USB stick plugged in and
a Windows drivers CD inserted into the computer.
17:34:44 evand It first mounts the CD, then goes into the try-usb block and
mounts the usb disk over top of that.
17:35:38 evand If I stick a if [ $mounted = 1 ]; then break; fi before
try-usb it goes with the Windows CD, which obviously fails.
17:36:29 cjwatson oh, hmm
17:36:33 evand I suspect in this scenario, it should try to mount, then
check to make sure we're dealing with an Ubuntu image, if not go to the next
device, if there are no devices left, fail
17:37:36 cjwatson I see what you mean, that's badly wrong

[Bug 234185] Re: Alternate CD cdrom-detect.postinst does not consider USB flash drive/key.

2008-10-18 Thread Evan Dandrea
Untested patch. This will give USB disks precedence over CDs and search
all inserted CDs for an Ubuntu image, failing with cdrom-detect/wrong-cd
if none of the inserted CDs contain a valid CD image. Previously,
cdrom-detect would go to cdrom-detect/wrong-cd on the first CD it could
mount, rather than checking to see if there were other CDs with an
Ubuntu image.

Most importantly, it no longer double mounts on /cdrom if both a CD and
USB disk are inserted.

 getting this into Intrepid.

That sounds like a pretty accurate interpretation, yes.

You asked for any bugs not in your lists that should be fixed... so I
pointed you to this one. As a relative newcomer to the world of Ubuntu
bug-fixing and MOTU work, what could or should I have done to raise the
visibility of this bug earlier? It was already marked as High
importance... and it looked like Chris was aware of it and had a plan to
deal with it. How could I have done better in handling this bug?

Launchpad has a 'nominate for release' button which lets you bring the bug
directly to the attention of the release managers. This is recommended for
any bugs that need to be fixed before release, even if they appear to
already be in hand.

Cheers,
