[Bug 249824] Re: [intrepid] bind9/named IPv6 unusable

2008-11-11 Thread Paul Mullen
I hate to keep saying this but all IPv6 only machines are completely
broken, as they cannot do DNS lookups over IPv6. It also means that dual
stack machines that have only IPv6 resolvers are broken.

Re: [Bug 293539] Re: package samba failed to install/upgrade: Conflicts found! Please edit `/etc/samba/smb.conf' and sort them out manually.

2008-11-11 Thread tota
Hi Steve.
Thank you for reminding me. I edited /etc/samba/smb.conf accordingly. I
had solved the problem nevertheless.
I'm thinking that it would be nice if we could have a special folder
keeping backups of changed configuration files for samba or other
packages. All the instalation would go without any questions. At the
end, the system would ask all the questions, presenting the differences,
and the user could replace/maintain or reconcile with manual supervision
at his/her choice. After that, the system would restart all services
modified. Even if the user got confused he/she could go to the update
log folder and get back the correct version of the configuration file.
We could have un update log telling diferences line by line and pointing
to the previous and new config. For example
file /log/update8.10/log.txt:

#Section [SAMBA]
...
Applying update from version 1 to version 2
...
Configuration file /etc/samba/smb.conf
saved to /log/update8.10/old/etc/samba/smb.conf
#Changing configuration
...
changed line 55 from:
wins support = yes
to
; wins support = no
...
Changed file saved to /etc/samba/smb.conf and to
/log/update8.10/new/etc/samba/smb.conf

What do you think of this idea?
Cheers,
Antonio

 tota,

As for the reason why a conflict was found when you upgraded, it appears
that some of your customizations to the file overlapped with changes
made to the default config file between Ubuntu 8.04 and Ubuntu 8.10.
I'm afraid that there's no good solution for this in the general case,
and the solution for this bug is precisely what you did: accept one of
the other options for handling this config file, and then fixing up the
config file by hand if necessary. So I'm marking this bug as 'wontfix'.

Please do continue to file bugs about problems you find in Ubuntu; the

BTW, it looks like several options fell out of your smb.conf when you

[Bug 54180] Re: [rfe] sshd ought to support 'none' cipher

Problem is that SSH performance is still 10-30x slower with encryption.
On a 3.6GHz Intel Penryn with plenty of memory bandwidth [1], we see
around 67MB/s - 109MB/s [2]. Moving from 'secret' aes-128-cbc (the
default) to 'top-secret' aes-256-cbc (the most secure) is almost free.

Moving from MD5 hashing reduces performance too [3].

[Bug 297012] [NEW] package bacula-director-mysql 2.4.2-1ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-11-11 Thread Chip Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bacula

On a Hardy server I had finally been able to get bacula 2.2.8 to install by
having mysql up and running first before the bacula install. On this Intrepid
laptop I was trying to install bacula 2.4.2 for testing. I had tried the bacula
install on a virgin, new system install and it had failed with a similar
message. This time after (I thought) cleaned out all the leftover bacula dregs
I installed mysql-server first and then tried to install bacula. I first made
sure that there was no leftover bacula database with:
mysqladmin -u root -p drop bacula
to which the system replied it knew nothing about bacula (so good so far).

When I tried to do an install with:
sudo apt-get install bacula
it did not bring up the terminal queries for things like db administrator
passwords, database names or database passwords. It simply failed and hung the
whole system with it. After a forced reboot the system came here. The bacula-fd
and bacula-sd daemons are running but not the director. The
/etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf is missing. The bacula-director entry in
/etc/init.d seems to be there. The mysql server is running but there is not a
bacula database.

I would play with this some more if I could figure out how to REALLY get all of
the bacula stuff off the machine. Reinstalling the system from scratch gets old.
- Does anyone know how to, absolutely/positively, get rid of bacula off the
system like it had never been there before?
- Anybody have any idea of how to install bacula on an Intrepid system? I've
never been able to make it succeed.

[Bug 222416] Re: package update-manager 1:0.87.24 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2008-11-11 Thread DrC
Sorry - I can't say at this distance. The process was a bit stressful,
it is several months ago, and the only reliable information is the notes
I made at the time, all of which are above.

My initial post says it all, really. Sorry I can't add to it. When
asked which config to use, I took the (on screen?) option to look at the
differences, then made a bit of a mess of going back to the select
screen and got told there was a problem.

From general life experience - no special reference to this episode - I
might have double-clicked the Back button, thereby inadvertently
clicking something in the same place on the next screen, or maybe it
just didn't 'Go Back' properly. I didn't know for sure then, and with
the passage of time a false memory is as likely as any useful
information...

Sorry :(

Chris

[Bug 297025] [NEW] smbclient 3.2.3 does not handle the -N option consistently with past versions.

2008-11-11 Thread David
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbclient

The -N flag, which suppresses the login prompt, and is used by
backuppc's template configuration file /etc/backuppc/config.pl in the
strings $Conf{SmbClientFullCmd}, $Conf{SmbClientIncrCmd}, and
$Conf{SmbClientRestoreCmd}, which do full backups, incremental backups
and restores respectively. Beginning with version 3.2.3, smbclient has
stopped passing the backup user's password to authenticate with Window's
LAN Manager, causing backups and restores to fail when the -N flag is
specified (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/backuppc/+bug/283652).

The purpose of the flag is to suppress the login prompt when the
password has already been passed, and is certainly not supposed to
prevent the password from being passed.

I have edited my /etc/backuppc/config.pl to make backups work, because I
am guessing that the prompt is automatically suppressed when the
password has already been passed. However, it would save many users a
great deal of time trying to figure out what broke backuppc if the prior
behavior of smbclient were restored (as well as no longer requiring the
-N fag if the password has been passed).

[Bug 286339] Re: After hal-info update, the volume control buttons send every event twice

2008-11-11 Thread ugrandadamastor
I'm using a Vaio SZ2HP and I have exactly the same problem (though I don't
really know what triggered it.
In my case, the problem was solved by following the instructions in:
http://www.pihhan.info/sony/sony-hotkeys.html

In particular, all I did was:

1) lshal | grep 'system.hardware.product'
2) edit
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-module-sony-laptop.fdi
3) add the string to the list of models (In my case it was 'VGN-SZ2HP_B')
4) sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart

and it was working.
The attachment contains the fix for my problem.

2008-11-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
To keep the impact low on Intrepid, the SRU for Intrepid will be done as
follows:

The new pdftoraster filter will be added to the SpliX package, renamed
to pdftosplixraster. In addition there will be created a
splixraster.types file defining application/vnd.cups-splixraster without
auto-detection rule and a splixraster.convs file telling that
pdftosplixraster converts application/vnd.cups-pdf to application/vnd

[Bug 218615] Re: The live session does not detect dual monitor setup automagically

2008-11-11 Thread Ped
The attached logs are from Kubuntu 8.10 live CD.
Sorry for the change, but you asked too late, don't have 8.04 live CD around,
and anyway I think it's better to stay current.

The behavior of 8.10 is same, it starts up in clone mode.
Yet there's bonus behavior, the Xorg log file keeps growing, I did add the
diff file with what gets added probably every 5s or so.

I'm not sure if it is due to this, but the live session is extremely
unstable, freezing after short while, so I have to post now this before
it does freeze again...

2008-11-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks for the remark. Though I just can roughly see the parallels.

Before I posted this bug report I tried for about 10h to get openafs
running. These tries included the try to follow the instructions in
README.modules. This included recompiling the kernel, which also
failed:-) Unfortunately, I did not protokoll it. As the compilation took
a long time, I will not repeat it. Sorry! Probably, I've set a flag
wrongly due to insufficient Linux knowledge. I was very happy that I ve
found the above cited for the user *semantically *simple algorithm:-)

Cheers,

- the simple volume in tray works ok, changing volume up and down.
- when I hit mixer button, I do get the mixer settings with two (!!) front
sliders, both of them affecting the volume together (!).
So if I set the one of them to 0%, the sound is off, it looks like they

Firefox accepts either

Are you able to reproduce the bug using either solution a or b?

2008-11-11 Thread Margate
Public bug reported:

I have a few keys where the most important is Fn-F1 (wireless) where
don't work

Doing research on my wifi I found out that I can't turn wifi on with
Fn-F1.

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

Looking at the output from watch 'cat /proc/interrupts' key presses
increased the i8042 counter for the following key combinations

Fn-F1 Wireless, No interrupt received
Fn-F2 (No function)
Fn-F3 Audio on/off, Working
Fn-F4 Audio Down, Working
Fn-F5 Audio Up, Working
Fn-F6 Toggle mouse, Working
Fn-F7 Toggle Webcam, Working
Fn-F8 Lower Screen Light (not happening, but interrupt received)
Fn-F9 Raise Screen Light (not happening, but interrupt received)
Fn-F10Switch Display, No interrupt received
Fn-F11Fan, No interrupt received
Fn-F12Standby, Working

Using xev don't provide much information, except for focusout on
funcions there make onscreen notification like Audio

I know there a lots of wifi related issues, but this labtop is the only
one there don't give a interrupt when i press the wireless key and that
point to kernel i think. :o))

[Bug 246251] Re: Calendar Contacts Birthdays Anniversaries forgets displaying birthdays

2008-11-11 Thread Little Jawa

Same here, with Ubuntu Hardy Heron.
Did not solve with the upgrade to Intrepid Ibex.

The contacts that are shown seems random. Those that don't appear are coming
up when I edit their information, and disappear again after the next reload.
Most of my contacts have a birthday after 1/1/70.

I'm still searching for a link between those that appear, or those that
don't appear, to try to understand what causes this, but it really seems
random.

Note : I'm using SynCE synchronization tools to have contacts and
calendar synchronized with my mobile. Does anybody else having this bug
do this kind of synchronization (or with a Palm, an iPod or anything) ?

but with single screen (laptop screen only) it works normally...

2008-11-11 Thread Teej
Hi,
I am unable to understand what actually has happened to cause this. Are you
saying you installed something in Add/Remove programs and now your system locks
up? What was it you installed?
Also recovery mode there is there for just that - recovery - have you tried the
dpkg or the xfix options?
Thank you.

[Bug 296671] [NEW] [intrepid] orca does not remember saved settings

2008-11-11 Thread Teej
Public bug reported:

I tried orca out to see what it was out of curiosity. I set it up and obviously
being an accessibility feature it starts with GNOME. I went into the
preferences to disbale it starting on login, applied it and clicked OK. I then
closed the main Orca window hoping this setting was saved. After a reboot and
loggin in through gdm, Orca started again!
Orca is not saving the settings I told it to - namely - start on login which
i unchecked.

[Bug 296670] [NEW] No easy way to install new Kubuntu into already existing grub

2008-11-11 Thread Ped
Public bug reported:

I have at home already Kubuntu 6.10 and 7.04 installed, each of them on their
own ext3 partition with shared ext3 /home partition.
I have the graphical grub at /boot/grub at Kubuntu 6.10 partition.

I tried to install Kubuntu 8.10 there, but from previous experience I
think it will either overwrite the bootloader completely, i.e. making
the grub from /boot of Kubuntu 8.10 partition (another one) active, or
when I check off the setting in advanced options of installer, it will
not touch the active grub at 6.10 partition at all, leaving me with
installed system without boot setup.

As I'm not grub guru, by editing the menu.lst by hand and adding the
partition/files of 8.10 I got into situation when booting up 8.10 brings
some early error message about vmlinuz file missing? (I didn't had time
to write down the error message, and it's not related to this wish
anyway).

So I would appreciate a simple way in installer to (while installing new
kubuntu at new partition) add the new Kubuntu into already existing grub
at different partition (which should be left intact in any other way,
just the /boot + /boot/grub files updated).

[Bug 296621] Re: loader would not, could not load acid rip software

2008-11-11 Thread Teej
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 296672] Re: Intrepid won't shut down

2008-11-11 Thread Alessio Igor Bogani
Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order
to determine if this issue is usplash related, would you boot your
computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can
reproduce the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, you can
follow these steps :

1.Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2.Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press e to edit it.
3.Select the kernel line and press e to edit it.
4.At the end of the line, remove splash and quiet and press enter.
5.Type b to boot the custom boot line.

[Bug 293869] Re: [Ralink rt61] impossible to connect to WPA and WPA2 wireless networks

2008-11-11 Thread Chris Hawkins
I have been having the same problem. However, it appears in my case to
be restricted to the internal wifi adapter.

Here is a copy of my recent post on Ubuntu Forums:

I have the same problem here but the following may help those trying to
diagnose it.

Machine - Acer Aspire 4310
OS - Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid upgraded from hardy.
On-Board Wifi - AMBIT Microsystem (Broadcomm) BCM 4311 802.11b/g.

With this onboard wifi card I have exactly the same problem as reported
above even after installation of the restricted STA Broadcom Driver. IT
asks for a password, while displaying what appears to be a hex value.
Even when I introduce the password it just hangs. No problem with
unsecured networks though.

However, I also have a Conceptronic C54RJ USB wireless adapter showing
up as an Atheros C54RU in network manager. This has no problem
connecting to WPA2 enabled networks.

So the problem appears to be a Broadcomm based problem on my part.

Any ideas as to how to proceed with further diagnostics would be
appreciated.

I am running my Buffalo Router on Channel 6.

It seems to me that this a bug related to specific wifi chips rather
than a blanket problem.

This problem happens only when there is no css width applied to the text box

[Bug 284505] Re: 8.543 Crashes in CompositePicture

2008-11-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
 2) Everyone else but korsic posted different stack traces, it's not the same
 bug or
doesn't appear to be. Suddenly the cause was the vbox driver which i've never
used or heard of. Unless you are 100% sure open a new bug, it's easier to
 duplicate
a bug than to split one bug into two.

Looking at the stack traces I agree. The title of this bug report was
so generic that a lot of people have assumed they have the same problem.
I've retitled.

@Everyone other than korsic, file a new bug please. You do *not* have a
duplicate of this bug. We'll only be focusing on FrejSoya's issue here.

Bryce (or Automatic Bot disgusing as bryce), i'm concerned with the automatic
 aggressive pruning of bugs
on launchpad. This isn't the first time i've seen it.

A necessary evil I'm afraid. The unfortunate fact is that with Xorg
we've got around 2000 bugs open, plus around 100 new bugs per week
presently. The Ubuntu-X team comprises half a dozen people - too few to
stay on top of it. Mechanical pruning helps the largely volunteer team
spend less time with bug triage drudgery and more on actual bug
resolution.
