[Bug 313240] [NEW] Directory /var/log/samba missing, no logs written

2009-01-02 Thread Heiko Ettelbrück
Public bug reported:

Hi,

first of all: I'm not sure whether samba is really the responsible
package or whether a related one should take care of this. Please
reassign this as required.

Having a running samba (2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.3) server on Ubuntu 8.10
Server, I wondered why there were no logs written by its daemons.
According to the smb.conf (which I didn't modify regarding this
parameter), the logs should be written to /var/log/samba, but that
directory did not exist. Having created it and having restarted Samba
through /etc/init.d/samba restart, I found a couple of log files there
as I expected to find them.

-- In some way I would expect that log directory to be created
automatically (probably by the package installation). Is it intended to
let the system admin create it manually? If yes, why? If not, could you
please adjust the installation accordingly?

Thanks and best regards
Heiko

Hmm.

# /etc/nsswitch.conf

# If you have the `glibc-doc-reference' and `info' packages installed, try:
# `info libc Name Service Switch' for information about this file.

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 wins

Maybe this helps?

[Bug 313146] [NEW] scilab built-in function getdate() crashes app

2009-01-02 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scilab

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

scilab:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 4.1.2-4
  Version table:
 4.1.2-4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/multiverse Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Note: I have removed the scilab package due to this bug and installed
the binary .tgz release from www.scilab.org to replace it.

In the above referenced scilab package the built-in function getdate(),
which should return a 10-element date vector, exits the scilab
interpreter silently without a return to the prompt. This makes hardy's
scilab release unusable if getdate() is required. Workarounds may exist
but are not easy. The 4.1.2 binary .tgz release from scilab.org works
fine under hardy.

Note: I wonder if testing of the package is incomplete, as this is a
standard function with and also because gutsy's scilab had a memory
allocation problem which also rendered it unusable, i.e. scilab has been
unusable for the last two Ubuntu releases.

2009-01-02 Thread Harald Sitter
In 4.2 there is a button for previews. Not having previews by default
makes loads of sense considering kioslaves are network transparent and

[Bug 131835] Re: dellWirelessCtl needed for Dell machines

2009-01-02 Thread Adrian Busolini
Since this bug doesn't seem to be closed, I'll post here and open
another bug if necessary.

Reappeared in daemon.log under Intrepid. Message:

killswitch_getpower_reply(): Error getting killswitch power:
dellWirelessCtl (/usr/bin/dellWirelessCtl) not available or executable.

I've just downloaded libsmbios-bin after an apt-file search, and have
softlinked it. I haven't issued the modprobe yet; I'll try to remember
to monitor it and post back with progress. It only appears to log the
warning each time NM is restarted, although I may have to revise that
statement later. I don't know whether this was occurring under hardy.

Is this really a bug though? I was surprised to find this report; I
thought libsmbios-bin was more of an 'optional extra'...

I use a standard InputDevice section that has always worked before for

For Interpid Ibex, suddenly it no longer works.

When I run xev, it sees the four mouse buttons and reports them as 1

on the right-hand side.

I try to configure it so that button 1 is left-click, button 3 is right-

trackball acts as a scroll wheel instead of moving the mouse cursor.

Why doesn't it work for Interpid Ibex? All I get is left-click on button

[Bug 313071] Re: package ubuntu-docs 8.06.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 134

2009-01-02 Thread Matthew East
From the log, it looks like this bug is caused by scrollkeeper crashing.
We have quite a few bugs like this - they should be solved in releases
from Intrepid and newer but I'll leave the bug open in case a fix can be
implemented for Hardy.

[Bug 36091] Re: Failure to Save to SSHFS volumes

2009-01-02 Thread Arno Teigseth
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 34813 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34813

This is also an issue in Ibex; I know there are related bugs but this
one is labeled especifically SSHFS.

The problem is as explained above that on sshfs you cannot rename a file
A.txt to A.txt~ if A.txt~ already exists. Even if the target
filesystem can.

To me this is not gedit specific - all similar operations give the same
error:

a...@arno-laptop:~/jobbpc/var/www/dir$ mv stats.php stats.php~
mv: cannot move `stats.php' to `stats.php~': Operation not permitted

...while it works just fine if you mount with the rename workaround option to
sshfs, like mszeredi says above:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/36091/comments/15

What worries me is that sshfs isn't able to do this kind of renaming
even when the target filesystem is ext3. On my system it's all linux,
and I mount the remote ext3 system on a local ext3 tree via sshfs. OK
maybe the tree isnt ext3 but the filesystems are. Then from a user
standpoint I was puzzled that I couldn't do normal ext3 operations.
Until I found this bug :)

[Bug 313152] [NEW] sort support for numeric sort with suffixes

2009-01-02 Thread vlovich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

It would be nice if sort supported an option so that it would be
possible to sort the output of the du df commands when the -h flag is
supplied, without having to resort to complicated piping.

Ideally, du -hs * | sort -h would provide the expected intuitive result.

My patch however uses -H as the option instead cause I'm not sure what
the policy on using -h is since it tends to be a synonym for help. I
believe the only reason that du df have it is for legacy reasons.
However, it's a trivial change if -h is acceptable and would make it
more consistent with du df.

The wording of the documentation in the help printout could also use a
little bit of work.

Also, the helper functions I added in strnumcmp could probably me moved
into sort.c so that they don't affect the size of all the other
utlilities using it, unless they're useful elsewhere (or can be removed
because it's already implemented in one of the other files).

On of these workaround will not allow to properly see flash movies

found in Internet looks more like wizardry and make no sens at all.

[Bug 287879] Re: cryptsetup does not understand UUID= in fstab and conf.d/resume

2009-01-02 Thread jasonwc
I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 8.10. Nikolaus is correct. Not only may
UUIDs be used to reference LVM volumes in /etc/fstab, this is the
default configuration in 8.10. I followed the instructions here
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedFilesystemLVMHowto) in order
to create a LUKS+LVM encrypted system with AES-XTS, which as of this
time is currently unsupported by the alternative installer.

After manually creating a LUKS volume, setting up the LVM, and creating
the partitions using the 8.10 Live CD, I installed as normal. The
installer setup the system as if it was an unencrypted LVM volume. The
LVM volumes in /etc/fstab were referenced by their UUID. However, I
found that with this setup the system is unbootable, and no warning is
displayed when the initrd is created. There simply is no
config/config.d/cryptroot and thus the system is unbootable.

Modifying /etc/fstab to reference the device name resolves the issue.
However, UUIDs may be used in /etc/crypttab.

My understanding from reading some other bug reports is that the UUID is
inaccessible because it's only available when the volume has been
decrypted. However, aren't the partitions mounted by the time fstab is
read to mount them? I would assume /etc/crypttab is read first to
decrypt the LUKS volume, and then the UUID of the LVM volumes should be
accessible to the system. Perhaps I'm wrong about this.

Anyway, this is a serious issue as it causes the system to become
unbootable with no warning.

[Bug 313159] [NEW] [Intrepid, Jaunty] Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-01-02 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Problem versions:
---
Rhythmbox 0.11.6 (apt-cache policy gives Installed:
0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2)
Ubuntu 8.10, Jaunty Alpha-2

Regression behaviour (and possible clue to the bug's origin)
--
Problem does not occur in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (Rhythmbox 0.11.5) so this is a
-regression-.
However, there was a different problem (I will give more details in a comment)
with this version and I am now thinking that perhaps the fix for that problem
ended up creating this new bug. This is just idle speculation on my part but
it may be just also be a clue.

Steps to reproduce problem symptoms:
---
1. Open Rhythmbox (First close existing session if already open)
2. Place one or two songs into the Play Queue from say your Music library or
from an audio CD. (Right-click on each song and Add to Play Queue)
3. Play the queue. (Highlight Play Queue in left sidebar and then click on the
Play toolbar button.
Results of this step:
The Play button visually changes to its depressed state and the songs in
the queue play. Each song disappears from the queue as it finishes playing.
This is the expected (correct) behaviour so far. *But notice the
following.* When the queue has finished and there are no more songs shown in
the queue, the Play button still remains depressed. This is unexpected
behaviour to my mind and it may be associated with the main problem. Since
there are no more songs to play, I would expect the Play button to revert to
its normal unpressed state.
4. Once the queue has finished playing, click the Play button to change it
back to its normal state. *Note:* This step does not seem to affect the
outcome whether it is done or not.
5. Create another short play queue as described above in step 2.
6. Try to play the new queue as described in step 3 above.
Results of this step:
Although you can press and unpress the Play button, the song is not played.
This is the main unexpected behaviour symptom of this bug report. I would
expect that the new queue can be played just like the first one.

[Bug 313160] [NEW] edit ubuntu system sound theme reverts complete theme to silence

2009-01-02 Thread Broomer68
Public bug reported:

When I want to add a sound to the ubuntu sound theme, the theme is cancelled
and a clean (=empty) custom theme is selected instead of copied from the
originating theme.
so you need to fill in all sounds instead of just the 'new mail' you wanted.

Also you start in the 'home' directory every time you want to add a sound, and
have to crawl your way to /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo for selecting the
right or wrong sound. when wrong, you have to start all over again from 'home'
instead of from the place you selected the wrong sound.
Could there be a pre'listen' as well?

2009-01-02 Thread sumpm1
No, the device does not register with dmesg or lsusb. I realise, and
realised before I posted, that theis bug may not be specific to or
related to the xorg package. BUT when you file a bug here at Launchpad,
you MUST enter a package name for the bug. So I am experiencing
difficulties in Ubuntu recognising one of my usb devices and when it is
plugged in, NOTHING HAPPENS. So I have NO CLUE what the heck package is
failing! So if there is any way that you could direct me to where people
could help on this issue and the bug would be filed correctly, I would
appreciate it.

[Bug 313161] [NEW] network might not be configured if /var/run/network/ifstate is not in clean state

2009-01-02 Thread te_ess
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: netbase

/etc/init.d/networking will not touch interfaces if
/var/run/network/ifstate indicates that all devices are configured and
up-n-running

This is quite a bad idea if the system crashed and is rebooted. in my
case (remote-hands only) the server was unreachable until i zeroed
/var/run/network/ifstat through a rescue-system

I suggest the script checks if /var/run/network/ifstate modification-
time is older than the computers current uptime. if it is, the file must
be deleted and all interfaces should be considered unconfigured.
Afterwards the file is in an sensible state.

[Bug 244480] Re: support AES-XTS mode

2009-01-02 Thread jasonwc
Note that following installation you'll need to use a live CD to modify
/etc/crypttab, /etc/fstab, load the necessary modules and rebuild
initrd. It may be easier to just follow this howto if you want LVM+LUKS
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedFilesystemLVMHowto). I can
confirm that this method works, and contrary to the HOWTO, hibernate
works great in Ubuntu 8.10 with the Nvidia biinary drivers.

Just replace aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 with aes-xts-plain when creating the
LUKS volume.

[Bug 85488] Re: some usb_devices fault if usb_suspend enabled

2009-01-02 Thread Joshia
I have the same problem on my Hardy (2.6.27-7-generic). My scanner
(UMAX, forgot the type) at home works perfectly without any hassles of
scanning any document.

But I'm now outside my hometown and I have to scan some pictures for my
homework. Here, there is an EPSON Perfection 660. Because no drivers
released for Windows Vista for this model, I have been trying to use my
hardy.

I just plugged it into one of my USB socket in my laptop. At first, it
was unable to access the scanner at all so I installed the firmware file
to /usr/share/sane/snapscan and input the firmware file location to
the config file in /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf.

Then I opened Xsane. It worked fine in a few seconds when I tried to
scan a book cover in Xsane, and in several seconds, Xsane was no longer
able to access my scanner. I restarted Xsane but now It didn't even able
to contact my scanner. Then I restarted my computer for several times
and it didn't work at all.

So, I googled around and tried to install scanbuttond: No luck. Using
other programs didn't give me any outcome to be able to access my
scanner. I have also tried to use the command-line method scanimage
and it produces the same error as in Xsane.

Please help me as I have to finish my work during next two weeks.

[Bug 313165] [NEW] apt-cacher-ng using all available CPU if a package broker

2009-01-02 Thread Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-cacher-ng

I noticed, apt-cacher-ng every day grabs all CPU resources and don't release it
in many hours, untill I have to command /etc/init.d/apt-cacher-ng restart.
Since a problem was appearing in same time every day, I looked up crontab, and
find an expiration task launch via perl script. I make the same via browser,
and find a problem: after Parsing metadata in
/var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/intrepid-security/partner/binary-i386/Packages.bz2
 output stops.
The problem was clear, then I look at file size, and try to unpack it myself:

ls -l /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/i
ntrepid-security/partner/binary-i386/Packages.bz2
-rw-r--r-- 1 apt-cacher-ng apt-cacher-ng 983 2008-12-16 21:09
/var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/securit
y.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/intrepid-security/partner/binary-i386/Packages.bz2

tar -vxjf /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists
/intrepid-security/partner/binary-i386/Packages.bz2

bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows.
bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

tar: Child returned status 2

So, I have to manually delete this file to repair apt-cacher-ng CPU
usage. The problem was gone

[Bug 313159] Re: [Intrepid, Jaunty] Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-01-02 Thread Chris Schoonbee
More details on speculation as to origin of bug referred to in description.
--

Rhythmbox 0.11.5 as in Ubuntu 8.04 displayed the unexpected behaviour described
in a previous bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/150394

An example of the unexpected behaviour: You opened an audio CD with
Rhythmbox and selected a few songs for your play queue and played the
queue. Once the queue had been finished, the program would continue to
play songs on the CD from the beginning instead of stopping.

This bug report was linked to the upstream bug
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=549410

This behaviour no longer appears to occur in Rhythmbox 0.11.6 so it
seems that something was changed upstream to affect or fix it although I
cannot find any details.

Since the point of occurrence of this old (fixed?) behaviour and the new
unexpected behaviour described in this current bug report is the same,
viz. what happens after the play queue is finished, this may be a clue
as to which region of code to investigate.

2009-01-02 Thread Dave Hay
I can confirm that Dave's circumvention works for me as well - I'm using
Intrepid on a 2007-AE7 Thinkpad T60p with the binary fglrx driver and
compiz.

I've written this up on my blog here: -

http://www.davehay.f2s.com/2009/01/happy-new-year-and-its-looking-good-
so.html

The post includes the scripts that I've used in three different Intrepid
builds, as well as my xorg.conf and lspci listing.

As per other comments here, much kudos to Dave to coming up with this.
In my opinion, this is still a circumvention to a bug, rather than a
permanent solution, especially given that suspend/resume was broken (
for me ) during a recent update after the Intrepid installation.

[Bug 278318] Re: video tearing with textured video on intel card

2009-01-02 Thread Denis Malinovsky
Guys, comment #77 helped me to resolve this issue. Hope it'll help you
too. See it below.

 The proposed package 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10.1 with
 Option TexturedVideo false
 Option VideoOverlay on
resolves the tearing I was experiencing with video on my shuttle kpc (intel
 i915).

[Bug 313159] Re: [Intrepid, Jaunty] Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-01-02 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Confirmation of problem

I confirmed that the problem behaviour also occurs in Fedora 10 which also uses
Rhythmbox 0.11.6 but I cannot find a corresponding Fedora bug report. This
would nevertheless seem to confirm that it is an upstream bug.

I also described the bug on my local Ubuntu mailing list. Two people
confirmed the bug on their Ubuntu 8.10 systems and no-one gave a
contrary experience (ie where they did not see the problem behaviour).

A small oops: I mentioned the url of the upstream bug possibly
associated with the origin of this bug and this was automatically added
as a remote bug watch. But please bear in mind that this is not the
actual upstream bug associated with this current bug report. I don't
know whether an upstream bug actually exists yet or not.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

  Problem versions:
  ---
Rhythmbox 0.11.6 (apt-cache policy gives Installed:
0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2)
  Ubuntu 8.10, Jaunty Alpha-2

Regression behaviour (and possible clue to the bug's origin)
  --
Problem does not occur in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (Rhythmbox 0.11.5) so this is a
-regression-.
- However, there was a different problem (I will give more details in a
comment) with this version and I am now thinking that perhaps the fix for that
problem ended up creating this new bug. This is just idle speculation on my
part but it may be just also be a clue.
+ However, there was a different problem (I will give more details in a
comment) with this version and I am now thinking that perhaps the fix for that
problem ended up creating this new bug. This is just idle speculation on my
part but it may also be a clue.

(Highlight Play Queue in left sidebar and then click on
the Play toolbar button.
Although you can press and unpress the Play button, the song is not
played. This is the main unexpected behaviour symptom of this bug report. I
would expect that the new queue can be played just like the first one.

[Bug 313053] Re: No Sound

2009-01-02 Thread duanedesign
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I would start here :

Note 1. Intrepid users: due to a bug in the ALSA libraries, your PCM
mixer may occasionally become muted or reset to 0% volume. If you cannot
hear sound - or hear a faint crackling - refer to Part C, Step 3.

Part C

3. Ensure that your sound card's PCM mixer is not muted or set to 0%
volume (this appears to be a bug in Intrepid):

Code:

$ alsamixer -Dhw

Note: When the PulseAudio ALSA plugins are active, you must explicitly
specify your hardware device in alsamixer (marked in blue above),
otherwise it will open the PulseAudio mixer.

4. Log out back in for changes to take effect!

That is from this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4928900

additionally you may try:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

and report your findings back here.

[Bug 297789] Re: Seamonkey should be updated to 1.1.13

2009-01-02 Thread PDK
Well, after dealing with my own bug in Seamonkey 1.1.12 for two months
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seamonkey/+bug/290857

And starting to realize that there is a serious security problem with the
Seamonkey package in Intrepid's repositories, I upgraded to Seamonkey 1.1.14
about a week ago using Ubuntuzilla
http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/

And I just want to say: if you're feeling less-than-secure on the
internet using Seamonkey 1.1.12 out of Intrepid's repositories, don't
leave your internet security in the hands of others.

Go ahead and upgrade using either Ubuntuzilla like I did or by compiling
it manually yourself.

Because Jaunty is going to be released before this bug gets fixed.

[Bug 313171] [NEW] copy error during installation should suggest you verify Install CD does not contain errors

2009-01-02 Thread alex
Public bug reported:

This is a suggestion to change the text of the error message that pops up
during the install if a copy error happens.
The current error message makes a number of suggestions like cleaning the CD or
getting a new harddrive.

It should also direct the user to go back to the beginning and verify
the integrity of the install CD.

(I'm a 1st time user and i spent a bunch of time messing with the
partitions and checking the checksums of the downloads and etc and in
the end the CD was just written with one error that caused the copy to
go bad during the install.

2009-01-02 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
I'm sorry there is no option to disable graphic-cards in my bios (which
is the latest version V207), it's a very compact bios. I tried to
install the closed source driver from AMD/ATI on ubuntu but couldn't get
it to work. The first time i booted mandrive from harddisk, it said that
X couldn't be started, Mandriva then comes with a tool to install
drivers, Mandriva downloaded some driver and then i could change some
settings about my hardware configuration and press test. After some
configuration it succeeded. It would be nice if Ubuntu came with a
utility like this, so you never end up with a blinking cursor in the
shell.

[Bug 313173] [NEW] impress depends on draw

remove openoffice.org-impress; this behaviour annoyes me, since I've

I had the same problem. To solve it, I narrowed the search to the function

# sleep for a random intervall of time (default 30min)
# (some code taken from cron-apt, thanks)
random_sleep()
{
RandomSleep=1800
eval $(apt-config shell RandomSleep APT::Periodic::RandomSleep)
if [ $RandomSleep -eq 0 ]; then
return
fi
if [ -z $RANDOM ] ; then
# A fix for shells that do not have this bash feature.
RANDOM=$(dd if=/dev/urandom count=1 2 /dev/null | cksum | cut -c1-5)

TIME=$(($RANDOM % $RandomSleep))
sleep $TIME

Very odd, I just commented it at apt, line 222, and It's working again.

2009-01-02 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Like mlindeboom said in his bug report Bug #312924 My laptop came with
4GB of RAM, i physically removed 2GB, because i read so on a forum.
Before this i wasn't even able to install Mandriva on my laptop. After
this (using only 2GB) i could. In my case the VESA driver doesn't work,
also the VGA driver fails. Only radeon sometimes worked but after
waiting for 2 minutes, no mouse support / touchpad support.

! There is also a bug in the grub menu, ubuntu doesn't register my
windows partition correctly. It places an entry with windows Vista /
Longhorn with partition (0,0), this should be (0,1). Mandriva's grub
boot loader install this correctly. (0,0) is my recovery partition.

[Bug 308890] Re: SRU for libv4l 0.5.7

2009-01-02 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Hi, I'm a Cheese developer,
Recently we had several (I'd say one per week, but sometimes even more) bug
reports on bugzilla.gnome.org from Ubuntu Intrepid users all more or less
caused by libv4l 0.5.6.
All users reported Cheese working again after upgrading to 0.5.7 from Loic's
PPA (and, of course, upgrading kernel from proposed but that's another bug).

So, did anyone already look into this? Is there a way to speed up the
SRU process? After all you just approved an SRU from 0.5.0 to 0.5.6... I
don't think pushing it a little further would cause any damage (indeed
it will at least make uvcvideo webcams work again with cheese).

Just as a reference consider taking a look at
http://freshmeat.net/redir/libv4l/76006/url_changelog/marc.info where the
author strongly suggests an upgrade (every one is urged to
upgrade to 0.5.7 asap!)
