[Bug 312493] [NEW] Not possible to run PHP in a multiuser and secure way

2009-01-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

As I started to describe here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/WebArchitecture

There is no way (as I am aware of) to run two websites (website A and
website B) where website B wouldn't be put at risk if website A is
hacked, and where you could setup permissions where users with system
access could change website A but not website B and vice versa.

There used to be php's safe mode, which is just an ugly way to
circumvent the problem, and that seems to have been removed in PHP6.

[Bug 260687] Re: Purging samba breaks login (pam_smbpass.so segfaults)

2009-01-03 Thread Rochvellon
I have had the same problem.

Samba was installed a fews days ago. Today i've installed Crossover Games,
which i deinstalled a few minutes later.
Later i would start synaptic but it doesn't worked. Every time i wanted to open
a program using sudo or gksudo/gksu i got only one message: Segmentation
fault. Nothing else.

dpkg --purge libpam-smbpass worked for me.

[Bug 313525] Re: [intrepid][r200]Strange tremor on the monitor

2009-01-03 Thread Javier Jardón
** Description changed:

lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon

My monitor model is an HP p1120
  -HorizSync 30-121
  -VertRefresh 48-160

Since I installed intrepid I have a temblor in my monitor (In the other
Ubuntu releases it works great). It is especially visible at the edges of the
windows.
It is very strange because all seems to be correct (with the default
xorg.conf configuration):
   - Resultion is on the default 1600x1200
   - The vertical refresh rate is on the default 85Hz
   - The horizontal refresh rate is on 106.3kHz

I try to configure the HorizSync and VertRefresh manually editing the
  /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but nothing changes
+
+ In Windows with the same settings (1600x1200 - 106.3kHz/85Hz) there is
+ no tremor

[Bug 39328] Re: Offer option to disable scroll wheel on task list

2009-01-03 Thread ginga
Yep, i agree too.

This 'feature' is very very annoying in both:
1.touchpad mode
it's almost guaranteed to face this problem every time you use touchpad.

2.mouse mode
sometimes pointer is not on application window and you scroll to another
desktop. Happens at least once in a day. (4-8 hours of work).

So at least 'disable' option is mandatory.

Also, didn't find any request for automatic touchpad disabling when
writing or when USB mouse is connected. This is a very basic feature ant
writing your own scripts is absurd (if you want to make ubuntu OS
mainstream). Making these features would save lots of nerves for
ordinary people.

[Bug 313548] [NEW] Many features in Eclipse are broken.

2009-01-03 Thread Michael Brooks
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eclipse

Eclipse is a very powerful IDE, and what sets it apart from the rest is
its built-in documentation, its auto-completion and helpful hints for
solving bugs. Its turns out that these three key features (and probably
more) are totally non-functional in Ubuntu's apt package. Which in
turn makes apt's eclipse almost useless. I suspect this bug ties in
with the sun-java6-doc package which requires the user to manually
download the file from sun's website and place it in /tmp/ . Even after
this is craziness done, the documentation is still unavailable to
Eclipse.

To see the bug first hand you have to download the real Eclipse for Java EE
developers:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
direct link for Linux 32bit:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/ganymede/SR1/eclipse-jee-ganymede-SR1-linux-gtk.tar.gzurl=http://mirror.cc.columbia.edu/pub/software/eclipse/technology/epp/downloads/release/ganymede/SR1/eclipse-jee-ganymede-SR1-linux-gtk.tar.gzmirror_id=454
(Pretty sweet that its just a self contained directory, with no legal threats
to my family, too bad apt can't just download this directory and call it
awesome!)

(If you have never used eclipse when you open it there is this window panel
that has help buttons on it, you need to close it in the upper right Conner to
get access to the package section and to be able to see the code.)
Go to file then new then Java Project
Give it a name like tester and click next.
Click on the newly created project in your Package section on the left most
side and go to new then Class. call it main or whatever.
Inside the new class type this line:
HashMap h = new HashMap();

In both apt's version and the real version there will be a red squiggly
line under HashMap. In the real version of eclipse you get 6
different options to fix the error, the very first one is Import
'HashMap' (java.util) which is what you want. In apt's version all it
says is press f2 to focus, which is less than worthless.

Peace

[Bug 313551] [NEW] mouse resets position to center

2009-01-03 Thread Merk
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10 x64 (though problem was also present in i386)

Some hours/days/etc my mouse will reset it's position to the center, resetting
every few seconds, so click anywhere is like using a rubber band. It also does
not reset to the same exact position, since I can see it twitching in the
center right now. I have tried liveCDs and they had the same problem,
reinstalling, I even tried starting the computer with no mouse plugged in and
it happen.
The only time it didn't happen is a liveCD of openSUSE, so right now I'm
blaming the switch from Xorg to HAL.
I've never submitted a bug, but I looked at my syslog in /var/log and found
this code constantly repeating:

Jan 3 15:11:54 the-tron kernel: [17450.550265] atkbd.c: Unknown key released
(translated set 2, code 0x81 on isa0060/serio0).

Re: [Bug 205018] Re: Hardy - Doesn't detect Firefox 3.0 for web searches and bookmarks

2009-01-03 Thread Ohad Lutzky
Well, History and Bookmarks have been joined together in Firefox 3 - the
only difference between a history item and a bookmark seems to be an extra
flag on the bookmark. Splitting this functionality would create code
duplication. Also, implementing searches engines will probably be very
similar as well. Since we copy the sqlite database over (the copy in use by
firefox is always locked), splitting into multiple modules means additional
overhead as well.
Would it be OK if one module contains all three functions, but has
configuration options to disable them? (Under 'More...')

On Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 7:42 PM, Sebastian Pölsterl s...@k-d-w.org
wrote:

I tried out the latest version and I must say it works great.

However, I was wondering if it was possible to split the module in 3
modules like the FF2 version? One for querying bookmarks, one for
querying history, and one for querying search engines. Search engines
doesn't seem to get retrieved at all at the moment. In addition, if I
tagged a bookmark I can't use e.g. google search me to do a Google
 search (see BrowserSmartMatch).

Once those issues are fixed I'd love to include it.

2009-01-03 Thread hggdh
reopening, and marking Triaged. I had opened a bug upstream, but did not
remember about this one here... so I am reopening.

What happens: on unspecified circumstances Evo receives an unexpected
response from the mail server. At this point it loses the gnome-keyring
password, and starts prompting for it.

On some occasions, this can percolate to other accounts, creating the
error described here. I will add the upstream bug watch.

Firefox acts like this page has full focus, it won't let me click any
other previous tabs, Finally after about 1 minute and 8 seconds I get
the paltalk login box, Once I log in, you never see done as a page
loading status in the lower left corner of the browser, instead the
entire time it's open the status of the site toggles from waiting
 express.paltalk.com to Transferring data from
express.paltalk.com In GkRellm it shows one of my dual processors
pegged at 100%. If once it's loaded I navigate in the same browser to
another site, and then go back to express.paltalk it pegs out the other
processor at 100% and takes the same amount of time to load.

Apparently there is an issue with hearing others voices and talking
through express paltalk, even though paltalk claims it works under
 linux.

All of this brings me to my point.

What can firefox/ubuntu developers do to make paltalk work better
with ubuntu? There are equal reports with similar issues in other
 distributions. *

If you can ever get to the point where your paltalk opens up and you are
able to login, they do have their own bug reporting mechanism, and by
reporting there your concerns would be addressed by their developers.
Encourage others to report as well. In this case the squeaky wheel might
get the oil. I will be filing bugs through their mechanism too, but my I
don't really have any previous experience with paltalk on any other
platform, so I probably won't really bring up all of the concerns a
 veteran paltalk user might have.

On a side note, I installed the paltalk windows app through wine. It
installed for me without issue, but froze up when trying to use. As a
bare minimum, you could report like I will that they need to port that
to at the least a linux binary client.

[Bug 292840] Re: brightness keeps getting decreased while non-idle

2009-01-03 Thread drekbour
This affects me too (8.10, thinkpad x60) and has been a pain for a long
time now (certainly was present in Hardy, can't remember back to Gutsy).
Experimentation shows two distinct problems.

a) on battery power - reduce backlight brightness When selected
this sets the normal brightness to 50% but doesn't actually stop the
user from pumping it back to 100%. Occasionally I presume the power
management daemon notices (to force this close and reopen the power
console) and sets it back in a most frustrating way. If (and I think we
should) we allow users to boost the brightness above the cap then this
reset should be done during a video power event (screen off, idle etc)
and not simply enforced every time something is randomly polled.

ref #136693 for related fixes done in the area of auto/manual brightness
that may not have been fully thought through.

b) idle detection clearly isn't working (as described by the OP).
Right now (on AC and clearly not idle) I can choose dim display when
idle and it _immediately_ sets the display to 25%. Again, I can boost
the brightness but it will notice and reset it.

2009-01-03 Thread hggdh
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 303528 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303528

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. I am
marking this bug as a duplicate of bug 303528. Upstream has already been
fixed for both 2.24 and trunk, and we should be getting the fix for
Intrepid on the new 2.24 upstream intends to release soon.

Please add comments on the bug 303528.

Effenberg0x0: BTW... we do not look at PPA releases (yes, I know, this
specific one is mine ;-) On this case, I *know* this was not fixed
there, since I cherry-picked only two patches for the PPA.

Currently, the bypass for this issue is described in the master bug.

[Bug 279693] Re: Regression Sata hard disk unable to mount after upgrade 2.6.27 generic kernel

2009-01-03 Thread jbodycott
Sadly, 2.6.27-11 met the same fate today after several days of use and
is now actually worse. I consistently fail to boot and don't even make
it past the splash screen anymore. Back to 2.6.24-21 (where I write
this) which is rock solid.

[Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change

2009-01-03 Thread KennoVO
Things are actually worse than they seem. As a matter of fact, LAME should only
be invoked with a handful of simple master options (like -V4), each of which
activates myriads of internal encoder parameters. Manually setting those
parameters through advanced switches will disrupt the carefully tuned balance
between the different encoder parameters, and result in substandard MP3 files.
See the LAME man pages and also
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME

Now, the problem is, the gstreamer LAME plugin implements an large number of
these advanced switches, and sets them all to a default value, thereby
completely overriding LAME's normal mode of operation. A list of these options
can be obtained by typing:
gst-inspect-0.10 lame

The developers of gst-plugins-ugly are even aware of this, judging by the
gstlame.c source code, which is ridden with comments like this:
/* FIXME 0.11: Remove all properties except the useful ones. Nobody knows what
most
 * properties are doing and they're intended for LAME developers only.
 */

As a demonstration, I tried to find a combination of gstreamer lame settings
that reproduce the behavior of invoking standalone LAME. After half a day of
trying, I gave up. Conclusion: gstlame.c is broken. If you want to rip CDs to
mp3 format on UBUNTU, use rubyripper instead of juicer
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Rubyripper#Installation_on_Ubuntu_8.04

For the die-hards that absolutely insist on using the gstreamer LAME plugin,
please be aware that the workarounds in earlier posts in this thread are
flawed. Most importantly, by setting vbr-max-bitrate=256 to values lower than
320, they disregard the following recommendation from the LAME man page:
The use of -B is NOT RECOMMENDED. A 128 kbps CBR bitstream,
because of the bit reservoir, can actually have frames which use
as many bits as a 320 kbps frame. VBR modes minimize the use of
the bit reservoir, and thus need to allow 320 kbps frames to get
the same flexibility as CBR streams.
The best combinations of flags I could come up with in my abovementioned
experiment were:
If your most important goal is to minimize the risk of audible MP3 artefacts:
lame name=enc mode=0 vbr=4 vbr-min-bitrate=32 vbr-max-bitrate=320 vbr-quality=0
A good trade-off between file size and quality:
lame name=enc mode=1 vbr=4 vbr-min-bitrate=32 vbr-max-bitrate=320 vbr-quality=4
Note that I don't really recommend using these settings, as they don't do LAME
any justice. Again, if you are serious about your mp3s, go with rubyripper or
wait for the issues to be fixed in gstreamer 0.11

[Bug 90455] Re: Add Tablet PC support to krandrtray and lockprocess (patches included)

2009-01-03 Thread Karl Hegbloom
I don't think that changing the wacom orientation belongs there, since
it's too localized to that point of control. Here's what I mean by that:

The tablet rotation needs to change any time the display rotation does,
so they stay in sync. In general, with a usb tablet on a desktop
workstation, if you have a monitor that swivels to portrait rotation,
and use RandR to change it, you might NOT want your wacom rotation to
follow it. But on a tablet PC, you always want them to remain in sync.
Perhaps the X wacom driver should be made aware of RandR events, and
have a setting that tells it to rotate with the screen, automatically.
Unset that, and it will not rotate when the screen does.

Since the wacom driver does not presently support RandR, and since there
are other things that need to be done when the screen is rotated, the
best solution involves arranging for an event handler or hook script to
be run when the rotation has occured. It ought to work no matter what
program you use to send the RandR commands to the display, and no matter
whether you invoke it manually with a command or button, or it's done
automatically by an ACPI swivel-down-tablet or swivel-up-laptop event
(sort of a button in it's own right).

I've been researching this problem online, and have found a simple
daemon that connects to the user's X server, registers to receive RandR
Rotation event notifications, and then sleeps until one occurs. When it
wakes up, it looks to see what the new screen rotation is, by directly
querying the display itself. If it's the same as last time it woke up,
it goes back to sleep. Otherwise, it calls a shell script with a single
argument for the new rotation, then goes back to sleep.

The shell script is responsible for changing the navpad orientation, the
Wacom tablet rotation, etc. Since it's invoked through an actual display
rotation event, it runs no matter what program actually called for the
rotation. (See bug #217182 for a comment describing this further.)

[Bug 313561] [NEW] 3d acceleration works erratically during same session

2009-01-03 Thread Tiefflieger
Public bug reported:

I reported Bug #306980 , in which I described that totem sometimes quits
immediately when I try to open a video. So far I have not found any way to
reproduce the error for sure, it just works (and sometimes does not).
Same goes for Google-Earth, sometimes I can use it normally and sometimes it
seems to refresh a frame every two seconds, which makes GE hardly usable.

I'm running Intrepid 64bit, daily upgrades. I had trouble once with the
nvidia-driver because I installed the driver from the nvidia-hp, but
eversince I did a re-install over my existing installation I could
install the restricted driver v177, as proposed and guided by ubuntu
itself.

I attached my Xorg.0.log, but I doubt it's of great help.

[Bug 313045] Re: xubuntu blank screen and no screen saver

2009-01-03 Thread duanedesign
Make sure you are using xubuntu-default-settings (0.40) or newer

restart your computer click the session button at the login screen and
specifically select Xfce4 before logging in. This shoulld result in your
.drmc reading Session=xfce4.

If this fixes your problem update the gdm config file shipped in
xubuntu-default-settings to use the xfce4.desktop session file instead
of default.desktop.

 etc/xdg/xubuntu/gdm/gdm.conf

- Update to use xfce4.desktop session instead of default.desktop
which should fix a number of bugs caused by Xubuntu not properly

[Bug 295251] Re: Samsung NC10 brightness keys block keyboard and produce all-or-nothing effect

2009-01-03 Thread Cyril BUQUET
I have proposed a quirk for HAL for R60P keyboard. I'm waiting from

I have the key release problem, but, the patch submited to the kernel mailing

 DMI_MATCH(DMI_PRODUCT_NAME, NC10)

For R60P : system.hardware.product = 'R59P/R60P/R61P'

Is it possible to modify this patch for R60P ?

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965] Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2009-01-03 Thread Marek Aaron Sapota
For this to work you need either older versions (xorg-7.3, xserver-1.4)
or newer versions (xorg-7.5, xserver-1.6, linux-2.6.28). Hardy doesn't
have older versions, newer versions of xorg and xserver are not released
yet and they wouldn't get into hardy anyway (maybe through backports),
they will get into jaunty probably (if I remember right it is scheduled
after new xorg and gnome releases) but for now I wouldn't hope that
anything will change soon. It was at least careless to include xorg-7.4
and xserver-1.5 in hardy when this intel issue is a widely known one.

Re: [Bug 175444] Re: screen going black

2009-01-03 Thread Ferry Toth
Oh, sorry about that.

Actually I am using the 2.6.27-7-eeepc version of the kernel, so I can
not easily go to jaunty.

My bug report actually does indicate a problem with xorg or dri, as it
crashes frequently (in minutes) while browsing certain websites while
other web sites cause no problem.

Switching to another browser (I've tried opera too) does not help. Same
crashes with the same web sites. I have no idea why certain sites cause
the problem, they appear to be normal web pages.

However the webbrowsers are the only applications causing the problem,
openoffice, evolution, adobe reader, mpeg players work fine.

Maybe you could move my bug report to a new bug?

Thanks in advance,

---
Ferry Toth

[Bug 313567] [NEW] [Jaunty] Suspend/resume restarts X session

2009-01-03 Thread Connor Imes
Public bug reported:

Dell 600m laptop.

The symptom here is the same as bug 157395, but different hardware and
is a regression from Intrepid and earlier versions.

After a standby/resume cycle, I am presented with the gnome login screen
and can successfully login again, but my previous session is lost.

Hibernate/resume works just fine.

[Bug 179139] Re: Intel Wireless Restrictions: ipw2100, ipw2200 are not Free

2009-01-03 Thread Troy James Sobotka
This is a rather serious legal foobar. No progress on this bug report
has unfortunately pushed me to ask for an update.

Has there been any progress? Does anyone care?

The evidence is extremely clear in this case and someone should at least
flag a EULA trip in the package.

It's problematic legally, and this is something everyone should be
extremely mindful of.
