You should start the program as:

bacula-tray-monitor -c /etc/bacula/tray-monitor.conf

I wouldn't call this a bug, but a feature request. Program works fine if
it is started as it should :)

[Blueprint swapfile-in-the-installer] Support Swapfiles at Installation

2009-01-09 Thread tz
Blueprint changed by tz:

Whiteboard changed to:

One common item is a multiboot setup. If this were implemented, and it
would do a mkswap for official swapfiles when activating them, I could
share large, contiguous files (e.g. windows PAGEFILE.SYS) among the
systems instead of having several large files, one for each OS.

If in the installer, there is a partition going to be mounted, allow the
user to select a file. As a post-install, add a swapfile manager where
files can be selected, created, or removed.

[Bug 309539] Please help testing *Debian* packages fixing these bugs in samba

2009-01-09 Thread Christian Perrier
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 286119 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/286119

To Ubuntu Intrepid users experiencing these bugs:

For Debian, I prepared samba 3.2.5 packages that supposedly fix them:

  * Fix segfault whan accessign some NAS devices running old versions of Samba
Closes: #500129
  * Fix process crush when using gethostbyname_r in several threads
Closes: #509101, #510450

It would help a lot if you could test these packages. I suppose they
will work properly on Ubuntu Intrepid but I haven't check this in
reality.

These packages are apt-get'able:

deb http://pkg-samba.alioth.debian.org/packages-prospective/ ./
deb-src http://pkg-samba.alioth.debian.org/packages-prospective/ ./

Please note that using this source will upgrade any existing samba
binary package on your systems. No *other* package should be upgraded
by this operation.

If you use aptitude, I recommend you simpulate the upgrade:

aptitude update
aptitude -s upgrade

Please also note that reverting back to official Ubuntu packages would
be recommended after this test, otherwise you might be later left
with packages for which no more security updates will come.

Still, if some of you could test and report if issues are fixed, that
would help greatly to improve samba packages in Debian, which in turn
will participate to the improvement of samba packages in Ubuntu.

[Bug 69949] Re: SystemToolsBackends seems to be in busy loop

2009-01-09 Thread gatopeich
This is happening to me too with Hardy. Very annoying thing, when using
network-admin to configure an interface (wireless), two instances of
SystemToolsBackend.pl get executed and one of them seems to enter a busy
loop for about one minute, and configuration settings don't seem to
apply completely, at least during that period.

While configuring the interface from command line with iwconfig and/or
ifup/down, none of this happens. I would scrap the whole system-tools-
backend stuff where it not for the nice configuration interface
depending on it.

If I were you I would continue opening documents of this calibre with

Poppler is the rendering library that evince uses for pdf files. They

[Bug 298466] Re: screen cant go above 800x600 nvidia 8.10

2009-01-09 Thread Matthew Turner
Hi Bryce,
A few weeks after reporting the problem the restricted drivers appeared and I
was able to install them on the computer. I then installed the nvidia settings
tool. Having done that I had to plug in my CRT to get a full list of
resolutions and set 1024x768 as my default before switching back to the TFT
which then displayed the correct resolution. I am not near the computer at the
moment and although the problem does not exist anymore it would be nice to not
have to go back to my CRT every time I upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu.
Will fire up a copy of the requested files tonight.

As a suggestion, it would be good if there was the ability in the
resolution menu to go into advanced mode and enter anything as the
resolution/ refresh rate.

Regards,

Matt

[Bug 236422] Re: sansa mp3 players not mounted when plugged in

2009-01-09 Thread Hardy
I have a sansa e260 and I am running Ubuntu 8.10.
The sansa must be switch to USB mode MSC.

After connecting the sansa 2 USB devices appear in nautilus but nothing
more.

So we have to make the system that it is mounting the device correctly.

Make a new directory:

codesudo mkdir /media/sansa/code

Check which devices are used by the sansa with:

codesudo fdisk -l/code

Now we have to edit the file /etc/fstab
codesudo gedit /etc/fstabamp;/code

And put the following line at the end of the file, assuming that the
first drive of the sansa was found at /dev/sdf1 with the fdisk -l
command:

code/dev/sdf1 /media/sansavfatrw,user,noauto,exec 0
0/code

After editing the file /etc/fstab you have to reboot because this is a
static table.

You can also try it by hand with
codesudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdf1 /media/sansa/code

If you want to mount it as normal user use the tool pmount. Normally this is
not installed on the machines.
codepmount -t vfat /dev/sdf1 /media/sansa/code

Normally that's it, now the sansa icon should appear on the desktop after
connecting the device.
Don't forget to unmount the device before disconnecting.

Unfortunately I experienced some problems that it looked that the sansa was
just mounted as read-only.
The reason for that was that some files were corrupted. So I connected the
sansa to a Windows system and issued the command:

codechkdsk /F e:/code

Now it worked fine on Ubuntu as well.

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965] Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2009-01-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Good god this bug has gotten far too long in the tooth. 213 comments!

I'll get into some good news and bad news regarding performance, but
first some administrivia rantiness.

Okay, here's the deal. This bug report is turning into a mess of
different performance-related bugs, and actually isn't useful in getting
this problem -- everyone's problems are all intertwined together. Some
people are seeing issues with -intel, but others are clearly having
problems on the 3D side with mesa. Sadly some specific (perhaps
solvable?) issues are getting lost in the noise and as such aren't going
to get investigated, at least not here.

The problem is that the title describes a generic symptom, and everyone
with a performance-related issue has piled on. This is a good lesson
why it's important to file bugs with precise, specific titles. The poor
original reporter is probably lost under a pile of replies! :-)

Honestly, I think the best thing to do here is to close this bug report
and have people file separate bug reports. But from past experience I
know we'll eventually end up with another generic titled performance is
bad bug report with a gazillion comments and no clear path to a
solution.

So... I may as well leave this one open and leave some explanations of
how to file a proper performance bug report. Those who take the time to
find and read this comment will learn how to file a NEW bug about their
issue and include sufficient detail and precision to enable us to easily
investigate it and report it upstream (or fix it in Ubuntu if there's a
way for us to do that).

Okay, with that out of the way, let me get into the performance stuff. First
let's dispense with the bad news: It is extremely unlikely performance
problems are going to get fixed in Intrepid.

There's several reasons for this. First is that the issues are
structural. A lot of pieces in X are in a multi-year process of being
rearchitected to bring both a number of new features and to lay a
foundation for much better performance. Unfortunately these changes can
be pretty sizable, and inevitably bring some regression bugs - a risk
not worth taking in a stable release.

Second, a lot of time the performance fixes require a pretty hefty
amount of study and testing. Some of you may recall we had some pretty
severe performance regressions in Hardy during development. It took a
pretty focused amount of effort to dig in and figure out how to flip on
and off various internal features to tune things up. Often a change
that fixed one set of cards would cause problems on another set; so it
took a lot of testing (including a lot of welcomed involvement from the
community) to strike the right balance. The time investment for doing
this tuning work is hard to understate.

Third, and sort of getting back to my original points, even if the above
two problems didn't exist, the issues are not reported with sufficient
specificity and detail to be able to begin investigation. But this is
something you all can help with, and I'll explain how in a follow up.

Enough bad news, now for the good news. Looking forward, things are
definitely getting better. In playing around with Jaunty Timo and I
both notice the better performance on -intel, and it sounds like others
are seeing it too. I'm chalking the credit for this up to upstream's
structural work in mesa, xserver, libdrm, and all the other X
components.

Several people have reported performance regressions in Jaunty
relating to reduction in glxgears fps. Don't panic - remember how
you've always read that glxgears is not a benchmark? I think this is
one of those times where you need to not trust it as a benchmark. Judge
performance using a game or even just your own senses instead. glxgears
really just measures speed of blitting images to the screen, whereas in
real 3d apps the bottleneck is in the rendering of the image. Monitors
have a maximum rate they can refresh anyway, and besides your eye can
only perceive up to a certain rate (which I guess is why movies are shot
at 1/24). So as a rough rule of thumb I'd guess that unless you're
getting less than 100fps on glxgears, don't really worry about what
glxgears says - measure it with Tremulous or some other 3D game that
gives a real workload.

Another bit of good news is that Intel upstream developers are currently
very focused on architectural-level performance improvements as their
top priority. A lot of this is experimental still, and our testing so
far has not found it stable enough for regular usage yet. But it's in
the pipeline and is promising some serious performance benefits. Before
you ask, no, it's structural stuff so not really amenable to be
backported; we'll get it out to you all as soon as we feel it is stable
enough. (If you're up for building stuff from upstream's git branches,
please do so! They'd appreciate feedback, and whatever upstream testing
you do will help us all out later on.)

But if you're more of the mind of

[Bug 315373] [NEW] nautilus segfaults on insertion or removal of removable media

2009-01-09 Thread Tommaso R. Donnarumma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Observed under nautilus 1:2.25.2-0ubuntu4 (Ubuntu Jaunty).

Inserting a removable medium of any kind, for example a CD or a USB key,
or turning on an external USB disk causes nautilus to crash with a
segfault. This is 100% reproducible. After the crash, nautilus is
usually, but not always, restarted automatically.

The only user visible symptom is desktop icons disappearing until
nautilus is restarted, automatically or manually. A segfault is recorded
in syslog, always with error 15 (I'm attaching a syslog fragment for a
crash caused by turning on an external USB disk which is always
connected to the PC, the segfault is on line 4). No apport notification
is generated.

This and other possibly related nautilus crashes are discussed in the
forum thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1033060 but
with, I fear, little useful information.

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-01-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Summary changed:

- [i965] Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system,
Ubuntu 8.10
+ [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel
-
I experience significant performance loss with ubuntu 8.10 alpha 3 with my
Intel DG965WH based system and SVDO/ADD2 video card. Actually, the performance
loss started with ubuntu 8.04.1; I upgraded to see if there was any performance
gain with the new version. While glxgears produced values between 1580 fps
and 1496 fps with ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10, respectively, now I can only achieve
something like 445 fps with ubuntu 8.10 alpha 3. I get an error message when
starting glxgears that TTM was not available and classic mode would be used.
Similary, the flight simulator flightgear achieves frames rates of 1-2 fps
only.
My suspicion is that some of the hardware acceleration features of the X3000
system are not being used, and I don't know how to activate them with the new
xorg.conf structure and the underlying automatic configuration approach.
I would like to see the graphics performance go back to the values achieved
in ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10.
Your help / comment is greatly appreciated.
  Bingo
+
+ [Update]
+ Intel upstream has been in a multi-year effort to rearchitect X and the Intel
2D and 3D driver to provide better performance. While this work is underway,
people are seeing variations in performance levels from version to version, for
a variety of reasons. There are probably multiple unrelated bugs being
reported to this bug report.
+
+ It is important to note and remember that glxgears is *not* a benchmark
+ tool. It simply measures how fast the driver writes images to the
+ screen, whereas most 3D applications are limited by render speed, not
+ merely blit speed. Instead use a 3D game (flightgear, tremulous, etc.)
+ that has a real rendering workload to make comparisons.
+
+ If you're definitely seeing performance problems, please do not comment
+ onto this bug report - it's too lengthy and rambling already, and your
+ issue will just be lost in the noise. Instead, make a new report and
+ please be as specific as possible with exact steps to reproduce and as
+ much detail and logs as you can. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting
+ for tips on making a good X bug report.

[Bug 264181] Re: release upgrade for EOL releases fails

2009-01-09 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks, this is a problem indeed. Here are the steps in order to solve
this problem once and for all:

 * the release upgrader magic tarball moves from releases.u.c to
old-releases.u.c - we can deal with that easily via the
meta-release file on changelogs.ubuntu.com that we can
   control/update anytime
 * the upgrader does not know that old-releases.u.c is a
valid mirrors - fixed in bzr
 * the upgrader must deal with the situation that a EOL release may
still point to archive.u.c but just gets 404 from it
 * if the EOL release got pointed to old-releases.u.c it must rewrite
   the sources.list to:
   * archive.u.c if the upgrade goes to a supported release
   * old-releases.u.c if the upgrades goes to a EOL release
(think edyy-feisty-gutsy where e-f will need this magic)

This means we need to sync the EOL process with copying the data to
old-releases.u.c - I will write a mail to the sysadmin team about it.

PPPoE connections weren't possible with a GUI in Hardy afaik. Except of the

[Bug 252094] Re: [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-01-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
How to Report an Intel Performance Problem

First, make a new bug. The easiest way, which will pull in a lot of
useful logs and config files, is:

  ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-intel

Second, select a very precise title for the bug. If you use a generic
title like performance sucks it will just attract others with
unrelated performance issues to comment on and hijack your bug, which
just wastes everyone's time, most especially your own!

Next, provide very specific steps to reproduce the issue. Reproduce the
problem yourself several times (including after a fresh reboot) so
you're certain it's just not some random quirk. When a developer or
tester is able to easily reproduce your issue, it makes it immensely
easier for them to figure out how to fix it, and to be certain that your
issue is gone.

For performance bugs, a few other bits of data can be useful, including
`glxinfo` and `xdpyinfo` output, and a video or photo (particularly if
the perf issue is accompanied by graphics corruption or glitches.) See
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html as the official
guide on what to include.

Finally, vary your setup and see how many different ways you can or
can't reproduce it. Try it with compiz on vs. off, or on a different
version of Ubuntu, or a different distro with the same xserver/driver
version, or on another computer also running Ubuntu but with different
Intel graphics chips. Or try out some xorg.conf driver parameters
listed in `man intel` to see how they influence things.

If you follow these guidelines, you'll stand a much better chance of
getting your performance issue looked at. Be aware, though, that with
performance issues Intel is mainly concerned with what is in their git
tree; they may ask you to build and test their latest code, and if the
issue doesn't exist there they'll consider the problem solved.

[Bug 314860] Re: New timestamp when copying to NTFS partition

2009-01-09 Thread Toontje
I re-linked this bug with Nautilus because this problem (also) shows up
in Nautilus.

When Nautilus uses another package to copy files, then maybe the problem
is caused by that other package, but as I'm just a simple Ubuntu desktop
user who is trying very hard to stop using XP, I have no idea what
packages Nautilus uses for copying files.

I do understand that Ubuntu is free software and that I therefore cannot demand
help, but I hoped for a little more cooperation than just the remark you get
the bug in GNOME commander so that's clearly not a nautilus issue because I
attach a screenshot from GNOME Commander.
If it helps, I can open a new bug in which I only mention Nautilus and attach
screenshots from the same operation in Nautilus.

[Bug 314860] Re: New timestamp when copying to NTFS partition

2009-01-09 Thread A. Walton
If it's happening in GNOME commander it means that it's happening in
something below both file managers (which traverses from GLib down to
the kernel). Where the bug exists below is a good question, but it's not
one we can answer without a lot more information about how this change
occurs. Your best bet is to run strace and watch for filesystem events
against the NTFS file system to see where the timestamp is changing.

In the meantime, this is not a Nautilus (or GNOME commander) bug.

Sourcepackagename: nautilus = None

bug as incomplete while a solution is provided (by me) in the
comments?

[Bug 116802] Re: automatic filters for thumbs.db and desktop.ini files

2009-01-09 Thread keppelk
I am also using the Watch my library for new files. Each time I load
Rhythmbox I receive 148 import errors relating to Windows system files
(Thumbs.db etc).

If this is not going to be fixed, maybe an option could be provided to
categorically exclude certain files or file types (either by MIME or
extension). I personally would exclude all *.db, *.ini from the import
process. This functionality would allow for iTune files (*.itc etc),
Windows system files and any other user files defined.

[Bug 314004] Re: Lilo gets installed on dist-upgrades, due to the kernel image recommending it. Is this intentional?

2009-01-09 Thread Michael Vogt
I added code to update-manager that will remove lilo if both lilo and
grub are installed and no lilo.conf is found. I assume this is
sufficient or can you think of additional safety checks?
