I had the same problems when installing Mysql-server-5.1 and had to
uncomment the line to skip-bdb.
Now to upgrade, I was getting the same errors as people in this thread.
The current problem was fixed for me doing the following:
sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql-server-5.1
sudo apt-get

I 100% agree with the opinion of John Wards.
There has to be an easy and effective way to remove Suhosin from PHP with
having to recompile.
There should be two methods available:
1. I should be able to remove the php5-suhosin package.
2. I should be able to comment out the second line

In what appears to be a related issue, installation from the Alternative
disc completes, however, upon booting the system has the same symptoms
as the LiveCD has. After the Kubuntu splash screen the screen remains
black and there is no disk activity. This persists hours, until I
finally hard reset

followed the advice in the previous post and it had no effect. See the
screenshots but I have two devices listed in teh Devices Tab for sources
and only one of them registers any sound when clicking on Show
I will try it with ubunutu 9.04, as 8.10 is where the problem was found.
