[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2009-02-09 Thread Michael Schwartzkopff
Hi,

When I started my notebook looking at the log entries I saw something like:
resolvconf: unable to remove (...)/eth1/resolv.conf. File system read only.

This entry does not appear in dmesg and syslog. But the behaviour is
reproducable evey system start. Perhaps this helps fixing this annoying
bug.

Thanks.

Michael.

Yes, go ahead and download the patch. I'll mark this bug as a duplicate

if it doesn't I'll unmark this bug.

Same problem experienced while installing a lamp-server. A crash of
mysqlserver 5.a0 is pretty serious thing and in my opinion it is NOT a
low priority issue.

[Blueprint server-suspend-hibernate] Suspend and Hibernate Support for the Ubuntu Server

2009-02-09 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Blueprint changed by Dustin Kirkland:

Whiteboard changed to:

This is linked to DeviceKit-power, and improved power management:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/improved-power-management

So this one should be merged with the DK-p one...

DONE (Dustin): To use suspend/hibernate on the server, pm-utils should
be added to the server-ship seed. Looking at the rdepends and what
we're currently missing, it looks like it should be pretty easy, and
cost somewhere around ~150KB of CD space. -- :-Dustin

DONE (Dustin): I have successfully tested suspend and hibernate with my Asus
P1-AH2 installed with jaunty-server-amd64, and resumed with wakeonlan. I
needed to:
 1) Enable S1S3 in BIOS
 2) Enable wakeonlan in BIOS
 3) add a kernel parameter (acpi_sleep=old_ordering) to the grub boot options
and update-grub
 4) enable wakeonlan in the OS with:

[Bug 327326] [NEW] parse_ini_file wrong return value on failure

2009-02-09 Thread Robin Mehner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5

The php5 package of ubuntu seems to have patched the function
parse_ini_file to the state where the function returns the wrong value
on failure. Documentation of the function and it's behavior:
http://php.net/parse_ini_file

1) Ubuntu Release:
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

2) PHP Package:
 apt-cache policy php5
php5:
  Installiert: 5.2.6-2ubuntu4
  Kandidat: 5.2.6-2ubuntu4
  Versions-Tabelle:
 *** 5.2.6-2ubuntu4 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) Expection:

?php

var_dump( parse_ini_file( '/this/does/not/exist' ) );

?

should return bool(false)

4) Happens instead:
array(0) {} is returned.

The same is for parse errors (providing wrong file format).

5) cross tests:

with self compiled php and php packages of another distro (Gentoo in
this case) it works as expected.

6) test script

self-contained test script can be found in the attachment. Another one
is here: http://friendpaste.com/7KHoIbJCPCx7iDTUt6m1t0 (this simulates a
parse error)

[Bug 319146] Re: When a release reaches End-of-Life, update manager should show EoL status and provide a link with working procedures and more information.

2009-02-09 Thread Michele Mangili
Hello!

I've seen bug #191004 . It seems that other users are trying to upgrade
from feisty to a more recent version of Ubuntu, and they are facing the
problem pointed out by Savvas Radevic. For this reason I'd like to say
that, in my opinion, this proposal could be extremely useful.

At the same time I was wondering whether this bug report has been
triaged in a correct way. I'm NOT experienced at triaging bugs, but I
can read here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#An%20idea%20to%20improve%20Ubuntu
that if a bug report is a request to add a feature to a specific
program, it should be forwarded to the upstream developers, instead of
directing it to the brainstorm.

Is it possible to mark the status of this report to confirmed, since the
user has provided all the required information for describing this
issue, and it isn't a request for changing large parts of Ubuntu?

Thank you.

[Bug 298623] Re: No WLAN with RaLink after resume from standby or hibernation

2009-02-09 Thread henner
The same problem here with Kubuntu 8.10.
Suspend to Ram works quite fast (even faster than with 8.04), but after restart
network-manager isn't able to connect to my wlan any longer.

Additionally kde warns about a problem with kbluetoothd and the
bluetooth icon in the control bar disapears.

Attached you find an excerpt of my syslog beginning right before
suspending the machine and ending after network-managers failed attempt
to connect to my wlan.

Thank you guys for developing ubuntu! It's my favourite distro and I
assume kde4 will be great when the current quirks are gone. For now I
will probably switch back to 8.04, but I'm looking forward to Jaunty.

Tried this night without virtio block device drivers (only standard

the guest kernels are getting problems.

This morning I had to restart all guests.

[Bug 214465] Re: esddsp LD_PRELOAD broken

2009-02-09 Thread David Henningsson
Jordan, I understand your frustration. As nobody but yourself seems to
want to take the time to review this patch, what I would do if I was in
your shoes, that would be to see from where this error originates. Is it
Ubuntu specific? Is it introduced in Debian? Or does it come from the
Gnome/esound project? When you've figured that out, send your patch to
the appropriate person (or mailing list), and hopefully you're patch
will be accepted.

[Bug 327093] [NEW] Error during translation: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character

2009-02-09 Thread Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: parted

Here is a problem in Ubuntu 8.10 parted package (version:
1.8.8.git.2008.03.24-7ubuntu7).
Locale used in system: ru_UA.UTF-8 (russian)
trouble is looks like:

| r...@fqc:~# parted /dev/sda print
| Модель: ATA Maxtor 6Y120L0 (scsi)
| Диск /dev/sda: 123GB
| Размер сектора (логический/физический): 512B/512B
| Таблица разделов: msdos
|
| Error during translation: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character

If localization is not used, no errors on same operation:

| r...@fqc:~# LC_ALL=C parted /dev/sda print
| Model: ATA Maxtor 6Y120L0 (scsi)
| Disk /dev/sda: 123GB
| Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
| Partition Table: msdos
|
| Number Start End SizeType File system Flags
| 1 32.3kB 5001MB 5001MB primary reiserfs boot
| 2 5001MB 6021MB 1020MB primary linux-swap

| 4 46.0GB 123GB 76.9GB primary ext3

Looks like word Number is translated to russian as some symbol, like
№, wich can't be translated by some reason.

[Bug 318980] Re: acpi-support's 90-hdparm.sh overwrites hdparm.conf's apm settings

2009-02-09 Thread Steve Langasek
This patch implies that if a single value is configured in
/etc/hdparm.conf, it will be used in place of acpi-support's power-aware
handling. I don't think that's appropriate; at most we should read the
value from hdparm.conf and use it when on AC power while continuing to
apply a power-saving mode when on battery.

This bug is about whether the 'screen lock' hotkey on the ThinkPad

lock. Please file a separate bug report for your issue, or find an
existing bug report that accurately describes your problem.

acpi-support is not involved with screen locking at all in current
versions of Ubuntu; you probably need to check gnome-power-manager and
 gnome-screensaver.

I must admit, I'm pretty surprised that lid closing has been moved from
acpi-support to gnome-power-manager. Thanks for the info!

I confirm that your patch fixes my problem and that it is due to proxy
(authentication).

[Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Notebooks (Vaio, Macbook, HP/Compaq, Samsung, Zepto et al.) with Nvidia Geforce8/Geforce9/Quadro series graphics

2009-02-09 Thread Martin Jormedal
** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu on laptops with Nvidia Geforce8/Geforce9/Quadro vga card:

On various laptops from Sony, HP, Samsung and others there is no way to
control backlight brightness. In case of Sony e.g. on Vaios with 8-series
adapters, e.g.
  nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS
nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)

The registers have been found (kudos to mikes!) and incorporated into
nvclock, which you can check out by anonymous cvs and install:

  ]$ sudo apt-get install cvs
  ]$ cvs -d:pserver:anonym...@nvclock.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/nvclock login
  ]$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonym...@nvclock.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/nvclock
co -P nvclock
  ]$ cd nvclock
  ]$ ./autogen.sh
  ]$ ./configure
  ]$ make
  ]$ sudo make install

To test, make sure you are using nVidia's proprietary driver, then:
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 100
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 15
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S +10

So far mikes' registers have been found to work on:

  Apple laptops
  {
  Macbook 5,1 Aluminum 13.3 (Geforce 9400M)
  }

  HP/Compaq laptops
  {
  8510W (Quadro FX 570M, MXM)
  8710P (Quadro NVS 320M, MXM)
  }

  Samsung laptops:
  {
  Q210 (Geforce 9200M)
  Q310 (Geforce 9200M)
  R510 (Geforce 9200M)
  }

  Sony laptops:
  {
  8400M GS:
- VGN SZ650N, SZ61MN/B, SZ730E, SZ750N, SZ71MN/B, SZ71E
+ VGN SZ650N, SZ61MN/B, SZ730E, SZ750N, SZ71MN/B, SZ71E SZ95S

  8400M GT:
  VGN FZ38M, FZ31M, FZ11Z, NR31, AR41E, FZ11S, FZ290, FZ250AE, FZ21E, FZ21M,
FZ21S, FZ470E, FZ340E, FZ190N, FZ18M, FZ31E, FZ18E, FZ260E NR21Z, NR38S,
NR21S,FZ280E

  8600M GS:
  VGN FZ31Z, FZ21Z, FZ31S

  8600M GT:
  VGN AR51SU, AR71S
  }

  Zepto laptops
  {
Geforce 9600GT based laptops using MXM cards
  }

Add your model to the list by clicking on the Update description /
tags link, NOT by asking in a bug comment for someone else to do it.

To get hotkeys to work, follow the instructions in this comment:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/75
or install the package at :
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/111

Dual-adapter models (SZ6 among others) can get backlight control with
the Intel adapter using xbacklight, and can get hotkey functionality as
  per bug #173652.

[Bug 303647] Re: intrepid non riconosce la scheda di rete

2009-02-09 Thread mammoletta
 Good morning
I've alredy wrote to you, but i did it in italian and the bug was been
cancelled. Now I'll try to describe the problem in english.
I've upgraded my pc from ubuntu 7.10 to ubuntu 8.04 and than to ubuntu 8.10. In
ubuntu 7.10, the system recognized automatically ethernet connection wired, but
in between version (8.04 and 8.10 upgraded), I don't know why, I have two
versions of kernel. If i use the latest, the pc don't recognize eth0 but in the
others (specifically in ubuntu 8.10.2.6.22-15-rt) eth0 is recognized
automatically. If I try to use cd live version of 8.10 and 8.04 The system
doesn't recognize eth0. But, if I do Hardwere test, network card is recognized.
My network card is a via -rhine integrated.
Can you help me?
Thak you

Changing the human theme fixes the problem. I guess this is a theme bug?

[Bug 290153] Re: Fails to find boot device in Intel D945Gnt

2009-02-09 Thread Magnes
I reported that the problem was gone for me but I discovered recently
that it's not entirely gone. I don't have busybox anymore as long as I
don't attach additional SATA drive. When I attach the SATA drive (third
HDD in my system) then it's busybox again and sometimes writing exit and
hitting enter causes a crash. I'll probably test it more in the future,
maybe it's different bug.

[Bug 145858] Re: The OK box should be greyed out until you enter some text

2009-02-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the bug has been fixed upstream now

Thanks for bringing this back to my attention.

The password can be blank in gnome-keyring versions during the past year or
more.

If it is blank a warning is given, but the user can choose to ignore it and
save a cleartext keyring, which will not have the need for an unlock password.

[Bug 326607] Re: Volume capplet gone from notification area

2009-02-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
could you state clearly what you want, such comments are not really
useful there, the old gnome-volume-control is available and you can run
it, the gnome-control-center change to use the gnome-sound-properties
from intrepid has not been uploaded yet but that's neither a gnome-media
issue or an applet one if that's what are your concern there
