[Bug 338720] Re: Function lookup problem after calling setlocale(LC_ALL, tr_TR)

2009-03-16 Thread Andreas Olsson
Never mind that part about the tr_TR locale might be broken. That was
simply user error from my part. Wasn't thinking and automatically used
ISO-8859-1 where there obviously should have been ISO-8859-9.

Anyhow, I can still confirm the original bug report, providing there
function name consists of a capital I.

down, would you have the opportunity to test with Jaunty (for example
from an alpha6 liveCD) to see if the issue got solved in the 3.3.x Samba

[Bug 341816] Re: samba PANIC: failed to set uid

2009-03-16 Thread Jan Schneider
Yes, i have seen a lot of similar bug reports too, but all of them were
unresolved.

When the problem appeared we checked a lot of configuration issues.
The problem seems NOT to be user or client specific.
The users where the PANIC appeared:
 - had a unix account
 - a samba account with the same uid
 - no special ulimits set
 - no group membership which seems to be responsible for the problem
 - su user did work, opening files as this user did work, no messages like:
to many open files...

# getent passwd 11789
diehl:x:11789:11700::/home/diehl:/bin/bash

# pdbedit -L -u diehl
diehl:11789:

# su - diehl -c 'ulimit -u'
30720

# getent group 11700
groupname:x:11700:

# net groupmap list | grep groupname
groupname (SID) - groupname

Samba worked without any problems if there were less than about 100
clients/users connected.

Volker Lendecke from SerNet proposed to set change notify = no as a
workaround, which we did not really test.

If you need more information, please let me know, but since this server
acts as a domain controller in an productive environment I cannot
reproduce the bug.

Now my very BIG GUESS is that it could be that the code in Samba use -1

And that the code would be ok say, on 32 bits, but not on 64 bits.
Something like it is exepecting -1 on 32 bits, and received -1 on 64 bits.

 Please provide the output:
 dpkg-query -W -f='${Package} ${Version} ${Source} ${Status}\n' | grep samba
for the server and the client.

Then after that I intend to mark it as Confirmed for a developer to look

The trouble is that Debian is still on php 5.2.6.dfsg.1-3, and we draw

Re: [Bug 305393] Re: Please upgrade php5 to new upstream version 5.2.9

2009-03-16 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Hmm, interestingly, it seems that the appendage of .dfsg.1-3ubuntu2
onto Ubuntu's php5 versioning seems to break the merge analysis and
the grab-merge.sh script.

It seems that php5 slipped through the cracks for Jaunty.

Unfortunately, that means it's probably too late at this point. Sorry.

[Bug 216358] Re: Samba crashes repeatedly to assert_uid

2009-03-16 Thread Paul Dufresne
In fact I believe it comes from that guy:
http://webui.sourcelabs.com/rhel/issues/459901
he seems to suggest that the real problem is with the kernel not exactly
implementing Posix correctly.

I still have a doubt because he speak of setresuid changing the value of AIO,
not changing the value of
setresuid itself. OTOH, previous comment suggest that this fix the bug with
ASSERT_UID.
Maybe this also change the value returned by setresuid.

[Bug 343490] [NEW] The partition utility in the setup program reports a bogus disk percentage used.

2009-03-16 Thread Tom B.
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Alpha 6, the disk partitioner reports
a bogus percentage disk space used. It is probably a really easy bug to
fix, if someone can give me a rough idea of where to find the source
code. I think the disk utility is reporting the disk size as a
percentage. It should either report a percentage, or the disk size, but
never the disk size converted to percent.

The problem is that the percentage calculation probably breaks down when
only one partition is present, or in some related special circumstance.

[Bug 343485] [NEW] Guest account provides full access to privileged account

2009-03-16 Thread itismike
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm-guest-session

Say I want to let a friend use my PC, but for whatever reason don't want
them dicking around in my personal account. Fair enough, I launch the
guest account. The fact that a Guest account exists suggests that it is
a separate account and is not intended to allow access to my personal
information.

I hand the PC to my friend and they click the user-switcher and choose my name.
My desktop loads for them without so much as a screensaver password. This
seems contrary to the purpose of a separate account.

[Bug 249373] Re: gnome-session storing broken in intrepid

2009-03-16 Thread Endolith
It's not a matter of adding such and such a feature. It's a matter of
breaking something that already worked fine.

They didn't need to include the latest broken version of Gnome in
Ubuntu, and they didn't need to release Ubuntu on a specific date with
known bugs and regressions, but they did anyway.

(We're all clogging inboxes while saying that we shouldn't. Where
*specifically* should this discussion take place instead of here?)

[Bug 317781] Re: Ext4 data loss

2009-03-16 Thread Theodore Ts'o
There have been a lot of the same arguments (and more than few
misconceptions) that have been made over and over again in this thread,
so I've created a rather long blog post, Don't fear the fsync!, which
will hopefully answer a number of the questions people have raised:

  http://thunk.org/tytso/blog/2009/03/15/dont-fear-the-fsync/

It will probably be more efficient to attach comments to that post than
to add more comments to this (already extremely long) Launchpad bug,
since many of the comments are discussing philosophical issues, and as
some folks have already pointed out, patches to deal with forcing out
blocks on rename (just like ext3 does) have already been backported into
the Ubuntu kernel, and will be in 2.6.30. I understand that btrfs will
also be adding an flush-on-rename patch in 2.6.30. (Note that XFS at
this point only has flush-when-closing-previously-truncated-file; which
yes, I implemented after Eric Sandeen from Red Hat pointed out XFS had
done. However, XFS does not, as of this date, flush-blocks-on-rename
behaviour --- this was my innovation, to reward applications that were
at least making an attempt to do things right --- although given the
notoriety of this discussion, I wouldn't be surprised if Eric or some
other XFS developer also adds this to XFS for 2.6.30).

However, if you are an application writer, please, please, PLEASE read
my blog post Don't fear the fsync!.

[Bug 317167] Re: Thunderbird autosave popup window shows incorrect buttons

2009-03-16 Thread Matthijs ten Kate
John, thanks for your long reply, I appreciate it. I understand the
dilemma of not wanting to introduce new bugs into an LTS.

However, I believe these kind of issues show a weakness in the whole LTS
philosophy, because most code comes from external parties (in this case,
Mozilla). When they say 'won't fix', it essentially means that the 'S' in LTS
is becoming less valid.
Looking at it from an outsiders' perspective, I'd say So what, it's open
source, right? Canonical doesn't need Mozilla, they can fix it themselves. But
in reality, this doesn't happen (perhaps for all the right reasons, but from a
customer's perspective, it's just sub-optimal support).

If I'm awfully mistaken in this, please let me know. If not, perhaps
this is something that should be addressed in general.

For now, thanks again for your extensive reply.

[Bug 339233] Re: [iGM45] Video playback suffers from tearing on GMA 4500MHD

2009-03-16 Thread bofphile
Unfortunately, the workaround mentioned on the the bug report (not using
textured video) can't work with GMA 4500MHD because it doesn't have
hardware overlay.

I just hope we can find a solution otherwise I would have to wait
another 6 months after Jaunty is released to see this fixed. (although I
understand the reasons to not include the new driver this close to the
release of Jaunty).

[Bug 260672] Re: Can't install from USB pendrive

2009-03-16 Thread Jan Groenewald
I have tried both jaunty-alpha6 alternate x86 and intrepid alternate x86
images.

usb-creator (intrepid deb installed on hardy) made a stick that said no
operating system
or operating system errors on a dell optiplex 760. unetbootin made a stick
that booted.

Both jaunty and intrepid ISOs have these problems:

1. /dev/sde1 the USB stick is not mounted on /cdrom, and
cd rom detection fails, refusing to continue. Manually doing
mount -t vfat /dev/sde1 /cdrom
and going through the steps again at just the right place
mounting in an alternate console, allows one to continue.
Giving /dev/sde1 to cdrom-detect as the device does NOT work.
I think it is JUST after that when I have to go mount it in a console.

2. Install components fails as unetbootin made
dists/release/stable,unstable 0-sized files, not
symlinks to intrepid (vfat limitation??). Doing
rm stable mv intrepid stable
allows one to continue. For some reason
making a symlink there gives permission denied.

2. on jaunty x86 alpha6 alternate, pool/p/pcmcia*udeb is misnamed .ude, with a
missing b at the end.
Rename to continue.

3. after partitioning, once reaching install base system, you get
deboostrap error: failed to determine codename for release,
another bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/311792
and a forum comment here that this is due to the cdrom mounting in (1)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=277137#6
This forum member had the same problem on intrepid live
and hardy:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1008015.html

I'm still solving #6, I'd like to just have a debconf command or
extract iso-scan.udeb and run the right script.
mkdir iso-scan
dpkg -e iso-scan.udeb iso-scan/
gives me a postinst in which I find:

# This assumes that there will be no more than one distribution on
# the CD, and that one of the testing, stable, or unstable links will
# point to it. Since the CDs currently have many links, parse the
# Release file to get the actual suite name to use.
# Prefer the suite in default-release.
for dir in $(cat /etc/default-release) $(ls -1 /cdrom/dists/); do
relfile=/cdrom/dists/$dir/Release

which is a problem since I moved intrepid to stable in that dists dir
as symlinks didn't work.

I'm going to try start earlier in the process
with a symlink /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 to /dev/sde1
because maybe it will mount and the iso-scan will happen
before I have to move intrepid to stable to load installer components.

the nfs issues could be that the dialog tries to stat a file on the

[Bug 342761] Re: opnebabel needs to be rebuilt for Python 2.6 transition

2009-03-16 Thread Daniel Leidert
Please explain these two changes:

+ Include /usr/share/python/python.mk.
+ Add py_setup_install_args macro to setup.py install.

This doesn't seem to be necessary for the python 2.6 transition. These
changes seem to have the potential to break things easily; they increase
the necessary python version so backporting is impossible and these
changes don't seem to introduce any benefit here.

2009-03-16 Thread Martin Pitt
I subscribed motu-release. Please include or provide a link to an
upstream changelog. Does this provide any new features, or just bug
fixes? In the former case, motu-release needs to acknowledge a FF
exceptionl.

[Bug 326501] Re: wrong description for ubuntustudio-desktop

2009-03-16 Thread Colin Watson
The Ubuntu Studio developers asked for it to be this way, and the bug
here is in the Ubuntu Studio seeds. I knew this was going to be a
problem for netboot installations sooner or later.

Ubuntu Studio developers: What do you want to do about this? Note that
ubuntustudio-desktop is selected by default for Ubuntu Studio
installations nowadays, although the question is still asked. I think
that should be enough to remove the (must install) bit. What do you
think?

[Bug 343623] [NEW] Slider moves to the opposite direction in BiDi system

2009-03-16 Thread Yaron
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

I'm using a Hebrew Hardy Heron with full Hebrew interface (aligned right
to left)

The problem is that whenever I try to drag the volume slider the volume
goes to the opposite direction

Meaning that whenever I try to drag the slider to the right in order to
turn the volume down the slider goes to the opposite direction and the
volume turns up

And vice versa of course

I attached a screenshot in order to show you how the Hebrew interface
looks like and where the slider is located

(We'll ignore the fact that the interface is not fully localized at the
moment)

The version I used is 0.86e from Ubuntu Hardy repositories, and my
version is an upgraded Hardy (8.04.1 with GNOME half updated up to 0.24,
but only some of it)

Hope I provided enough info

[Bug 282752] Re: [Intrepid regression]Cannot configure password authentication with TLS auth any more

2009-03-16 Thread jannollo
Same here as mentioned by der_vegi (on 2009-01-05): Using
networkmanager from http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager the option
for TLS shows up, but settings are not safed. The connection then fails
and gives out a timeout message (see syslog attached).

As der_vergi, I'm trying to connect to the Humboldt University (Berlin,
Germany) network.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 with network-manager-openvpn
0.7-0ubuntu1~nm1~intrepid.

[Bug 261380] Re: Packages have invalid .gnu_debuglink

2009-03-16 Thread Martin von Gagern
Do I understand you correctly that the diff in my PPA is enough for now,
rendering Marco's request for a patch obsolete?
So now I wait for some sponsor to have a look at this, and work out the next
steps based on his opinion?
The version against which my patch was created is no longer current. Should I
create a new patch, and if so, against Jaunty, Intrepid, or both?
