[Bug 343740] Re: Update from 8.04.1 to 8.10 failed

2009-03-19 Thread Thierry Carrez
Hm. There is a reason why we don't provide Webmin in Ubuntu. It doesn't
work properly with the Debian configuration files. So it can screw up
upgrades...

If you installed and used webmin out of some third-party repository and
it screwed up your configuration files in an upgrade-unfriendly way,
you're on your own, this is not a bug in Ubuntu.

[Bug 342578] Re: mysqldump doesn't pick up /etc/mysql/my.cnf

2009-03-19 Thread Thomas
Hrm... weird enough, this is what my strace tells me (a symlink from
/etc/my.cnf to /etc/mysql/my.cnf exists):

$ strace mysqldump 21 | grep my.cnf
stat64(/etc/my.cnf, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=3959, ...}) = 0
open(/etc/my.cnf, O_RDONLY) = 3
stat64(/home/tkeller/.my.cnf, 0xbf8ccdb4) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
stat64(/usr/local/Zend/Core/etc/my.cnf, 0xbf8ccdb4) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory)

I have no idea why it looks for /usr/local/Zend/... (this directory path
doesn't exist entirely), but if you say it works for you, its probably
some weird local issue.

[Bug 342578] Re: mysqldump doesn't pick up /etc/mysql/my.cnf

2009-03-19 Thread Andreas Olsson
@Thomas: Stange. With or without symlinks (tried both directions) I
still get the same results as Mathias. I even tried with separate copies
of /etc/my.cnf and /etc/mysql/my.cnf.

an...@pc13267:/etc$ strace mysqldump 21 | grep my.cnf
stat(/etc/mysql/my.cnf, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=3894, ...}) = 0
open(/etc/mysql/my.cnf, O_RDONLY) = 3
stat(/home/andol/.my.cnf, 0x7fff7e12d8e0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
stat(/usr/etc/my.cnf, 0x7fff7e12d8e0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

The /usr/local/Zend/ does make me wonder. Are you sure you are actually
running the mysqldump belonging to the Ubuntu package? What will which
mysqldump tell you? What happens if you do the same strace on an
explicit /usr/bin/mysqldump?

This is what Google tells me when I ask about /usr/local/Zend;
http://www.zend.com/. Does that ring any bell?

By the way, mysql-client-5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1 is almost a year old.
Current version in Ubuntu 8.04 is 5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.4.

[Bug 342578] Re: mysqldump doesn't pick up /etc/mysql/my.cnf

2009-03-19 Thread Thomas
Ok guys, sorry for the noise. It was indeed this stupid Zend code thing
which was once installed on this server (and got not cleanly uninstalled
later on), this thread points to the solution:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=876252

I guess one cannot do anything on Debian's / Ubuntu's side to issue a
warning, but hey, at least you're now aware of the issue ;)

Thanks again for your time,
Thomas.

[Bug 345330] [NEW] smbfs, samba samba-common are uninstallable

2009-03-19 Thread George Bromell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbfs

My first time reporting a bug so forgive me if this is th ewrong format, forum
or insufficient details. After a fresh install of ubuntu 8.10 gnome desktop
x86_64 edition I attempted to install smbfs and received the following error;
$ sudo apt-get install smbfs
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  smbfs: Depends: samba-common (= 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3) but 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.4 is
to be installed
E: Broken packages

Attempting to install samba-common results in the following error;
$ sudo apt-get install samba-common
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
samba-common is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.27-7 linux-headers-2.6.27-7-generic
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

[Bug 345330] Re: smbfs, samba samba-common are uninstallable

2009-03-19 Thread George Bromell
Thanks for replying to this bug Thierry. I did also try installing these
packages using Synaptic, after refreshing the package info, but received
the same error message. I have now successfully installed samba by using
aptitude, which issues the same error but offers to resolve this by down
grading the already installed samba-common package to 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.
While I now have a working samba server I believe that there is a
problem with the dependency specification for these packages i.e. the
install should be allowed to proceed if the user has a later version of
the required package.

[Bug 339966] Re: dangerous action: dovecot-postfix force-installs new conf file

2009-03-19 Thread Mathias Gug
Thanks for the debdiff. The patch looks promising:

1. The temporary directory DIR is not removed.

2. All of the ucf logic is *only* run during the first install. A
dovecot-postfix package upgrade won't run the ucf logic and thus
maintainer changes to dovecot-postfix.conf won't be presented to the
administrator.

[Bug 345243] [NEW] debian/patches/01-fedora-build-patch.patch is bogus

2009-03-19 Thread James Henstridge
Public bug reported:

The nautilus-python 0.5.1-0ubuntu2 package introduced the patch 01
-fedora-build-patch.patch from Fedora.

While the patch in question fixes the build failure, it is the wrong
fix. The correct fix would be to remove the vestigal references to
gnome-vfs from the package, since it is no longer actually used by the
package.

[Bug 117713] Re: not proper dismounting for WD passport harddrive (making noise when unplug)

2009-03-19 Thread Greg Bognar
I've been using the script above in comment 7
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/117713/comments/7), but I decided to
put an encrypted filesystem on it using the directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedFilesystemsOnRemovableStorage

However, the sdparm commands do not work any more. I get the error message
open error: /dev/mapper/luks [read/write]: No such file or directory

sdparm expects a device name like /dev/sdb1; this is what the script
reads out from /etc/mtab. But the encrypted filesystem's entry is
something like /dev/mapper/luks[...], and that cannot be given as an
argument to sdparm. So is there any file from which the device name can
be read off in order to modify the script?

[Bug 345246] [NEW] Minolta 2400W printing gives error: /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed

2009-03-19 Thread Spott
Public bug reported:

I get new printer. Konica-Minolta Magicolor 2400W. Before I check'd that there
is some problems with this printer, but most people get it work with Ubuntu
fine.
Ubuntu version is 8.10 with latest updates.

I installed the needed 2300w driver package and changed the printer as
needed ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...0w/+bug/250583 )

But I have still problems. I am getting: /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip
failed errors.
I can't nothing to print, but I can print testpages at cups web frontend:
http://localhost:631

From error log I see: Starting process renderer (generation 2) and
this exiting with status 1 and how I understand, this and ca be one
problematic place.

Here is full output of error:

[Bug 345249] [NEW] Sansa Fuze not listed as supporting Vorbis and FLAC

2009-03-19 Thread James Henstridge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal-info

The 10-usb-music-players.fdi file does not list Fuze players as
supporting Vorbis or FLAC audio. I recently bought such a player (what
appears to be version 1 of the device) and its firmware supported these
formats out of the box.

With the FDI files in intrepid, copying music with Rhythmbox entailed
unnecessary and slow transcoding and resulted in all the music being
listed as unknown artist and album (in fact they appeared to be
untagged). After updating the FDI file, it just copies the music
directly.

I filed an upstream bug with the updated FDI file:

http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20616

This consolidates the entries for the Clip and Fuze devices and adds
device IDs for Fuze v2 devices. There is a total of 8 device IDs
because the players present different IDs depending on whether they are
in MSC or MTP/Auto modes.

[Bug 345251] [NEW] notify-osd shows double image for screen brightness control

2009-03-19 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: notify-osd

The latest notify-osd shows a double image for the adjust screen
brightness function (see attached screenshot) - a smaller and a larger
notification icon.

This is on Jaunty using notify-osd 0.9.5-0ubuntu1 running on a Dell XPS
M1530. It occurs whenever I press the adjust brightness keys (Fn and
arrow up/down).

Other notifications don't seem to be affected (the adjust volume one is
fine, for instance).

I don't know if has anything to do with another bug on this machine,
which is that when you press the adjust brightness key, it easily gets
itself out of sequence where it executes the *previous* keypress instead
of the key you actually press, eg if you press Fn+up, Fn+up, Fn+down,
Fn-up, the last two are actually Fn+up, Fn+down instead of the expected
Fn+down, Fn+up.

[Bug 345255] [NEW] If unmounting an open drive, it will have an error

2009-03-19 Thread Jacob
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I try to unmount an external USB hard drive by clicking on the small
eject icon in nautilus next to the drives icon in the places side pane.

It came up with an error because the drive is still in use. This is true
because the drive is the folder that is currently open in nautilus.

I expected the drive to be unmounted and nautilus directing me to
another folder.

I consider this a low importance bug as instead of displaying an error,
nautilus should redirect me to another folder THEN unmount the drive.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 with all the latest updates.

Output from: apt-cache policy nautilus

Re: [Bug 240916] Re: can't configure display resolution (monitor, graphics card) manually in gui

2009-03-19 Thread TheZorch
I was told by someone in an Ubuntu support mailing list that you can
make a copy of the xorg.conf file that has the proper video card and
monitor configurations and overwrite the xorg.conf file in a new
install which doesn't properly detect these settings and the copied
file will work.

Is this true? The next release of Ubuntu is coming up and I want to
do a full reinstall rather than an upgrade, so can I use my existing
xorg.comf file to make my current display settings work properly?

[Bug 324368] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XisbRead()

2009-03-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
Upstream seems to be waiting for better steps to reproduce. But I'm
assuming kees and mdz are not seeing the crash again due to their
silence.

I've left my nullptr check patch aside up 'til now in the hope that
further crashes would turn up so we could pinpoint the steps to
reproduce. However, I feel it makes little sense to release Ubuntu
without the check since we already know it can crash here even if
infrequently. We can disable the patch during karmic development if we
want to explore it further.

[Bug 338408] Re: Bug#518391: Patches for coherence

2009-03-19 Thread Charlie_Smotherman (porthose)
Arnaud,

I made the changes to the rules file that you suggested. IMHO worked
much better.

Both manpages have been created. I had a real problem with the
manpages. I would get lintian errors on the .deb but not on the source.
I tried several name combination which did not work. During the test
install I manually verified that the manpages where installed
to /usr/share/man/man1 which they where, so I included a lintian
override file.

I have pushed the changed to the launchpad branch. I also attached a
new debdiff, pbuilder log and install log.

Please have a look when you have some spare time.

Thanks
Charlie

[Bug 148381] Re: right-click menu closes and selects items when it can't fit below mouse pointer

2009-03-19 Thread quequotion
Having this problem in Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 on the gnome desktop under both
metacity and compiz with multiple (all?) versions and distributions of
firefox (abrowser, iceweasel, swiftfox and swiftweasel).

The location of the right-click does not matter. On occasion, when
right-clicking on an object, the right click menu will blink out and
then something random will happen. This is a problem when that object
happens to be a hypertext link. The link could be opened in the current
window and tab, current window in a new tab, a new window, copied to the
clipboard, bookmarked, or saved as a file. Without intervention, the
right-click menu will continue to behave this way until the browser is
closed.

It is possible to intervene by clicking the left and right buttons,
individually, several times on a non-interactive part of the screen (ie
uncovered background). This will temporarily recover the right click
menu, but it's equivalent to smacking your TV to get better reception
and eventually the bug comes back.
