[Bug 333813] Re: MySQL daemon crashes daily on logrotate's flush-logs

2009-03-31 Thread gcc
Step 1 has been done. The bug (this bug) is marked as fix released.

Step 2:

The impact of the bug is that any user executing the flush logs
command will experience a crash of the mysql server process that they
send it to, if expire-log-days is enabled but log-bin is disabled in
/etc/mysql/my.cnf. The logrotate process does this every day, and
generates an error email as described above.

I believe that in the development branch, it was addressed by updating
to a more recent version of mysqld. My Hardy system has 5.0.51a-
3ubuntu5.4, the bug was fixed in 5.0.33.

The exact, minimal patch that fixes this problem is here:
http://lists.mysql.com/commits/15790

TEST CASE: enable expire_log_days and disable log-bin in /etc/my.cnf,
restart mysqld, run mysqladmin flush-logs.

The only regression potential that I can see in the patch is that a case
where the SQL FLUSH LOGS statement might previously cause an error, when
check_db_used(thd, all_tables) returns non-zero, no longer returns an
error. I doubt that that is a significant regression.

[Bug 352321] [NEW] mysql queries lose results

2009-03-31 Thread Martin Wimmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

Problem tested on: Ubuntu Hardy Heron (Server)

On certain (mostly large) queries that use nested joins, when using LEFT
JOIN's with tables which are empty, other joins seem to also to be
evaluated as empty although they shouldn't be. As soon as I add a dummy
entry to the empty table (which is not joined because of the on clause)
the results are correct

This seems to be a problem of the query optimizer.

Following example query leads to the problems. (The empty table is
a20_1_temp. The table join for a20_1_shop_element is then evaluated as
empty)

Unfortunately I couldn't make the query less complex as I did here as the bug
doesn't appear then any more.
I can provide a database setup script to create the database if needed.

[Bug 352391] [NEW] AppArmor prevents DHCP from getting address

Are you running NetworkManager in session or system mode? In session mode
NetworkManager will only bring networking once a user is logged into the

[Bug 352446] [NEW] libtomcat6-java depends on libecj-java

2009-03-31 Thread stephen mulcahy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

libtomcat6-java depends on libecj-java which in turn installs gcj.

In practice, if I have sun-java6-jdk installed and then install tomcat6
with

sudo aptitude -R install tomcat6

which doesn't pull

ecj-gcj libecj-java-gcj

as dependencies, everything works fine and my environment continues using sun

for my project).

Can we rectify the dependencies here to avoid this implicit dependency

[Bug 352321] Re: mysql queries lose results

2009-03-31 Thread Martin Wimmer
ok, thank you for your quick reply. I now created an import script and
tested it.

With it I could also reproduce this bug on intrepid.

To see how the results of the query should normally look like, try to insert a
dummy entry into the temp table:
INSERT INTO `plib_objects_plib_objects_dbo_temp` (`oid`, `expires`) VALUES
(-1, '2030-01-01 00:00:00');

After creating it the bug disappears. If you delete it, the bug appears
again.

In fact the error code is generated when /sbin/ifconfig is invoked to
bring up an alias (like eth0:0) interface.

This suggests both problems likely have a common underlying cause. My
research shows that /sbin/ifconfig, being invoked by dhclient, is also
the culprit here. (See comments below.)

This may also mean that this bug should be reclassified as being against
the net-tools package instead of dhcp3.

Manually assigned aliases (ifconfig eth0:2 $ip) do show up
in ifconfig listings just as they should.

Although I don't have dhcpcd installed, I've observed similar results
with dhclient, where it fails to configure the interface, but invoking
ifconfig directly with a static address works.

This gives some hope for a possible workaround hack. I'm thinking in
/etc/network/interfaces one could invoke a script using the 'up'
argument for the main (real) interface, which then would invoke dhclient
in some fashion or maybe using a simpler DHCP client like udhcpc that
returns an IP address to a shell variable, and then invokes ifconfig,
passing the address. It would have limitations, like requiring perpetual
leases (I think, as there would be no process left running to handle an
expired lease).

...makes me think that you may not be able use dhcp on virtual interfaces

on that same parent, and the same as the parent itself.

While a MAC address is often used as the default way to identify a DHCP
client, the DHCP client can optionally supply other identifying
information. For example, this theoretically correct (untested, due to
this bug) stanza from /etc/network/interfaces specifies that when the
DHCP client requests an address for the virtual interface that it
identifies itself with the alternate host name, indianpoint.

auto eth0:1
iface eth0:1 inet dhcp
  hostname indianpoint

Being able to use DHCP on virtual interfaces is highly desirable in
order to keep maintenance to a minimum, especially if you are using an
integrated DHCP/DNS service, like Dnsmasq. In that case the act of
requesting an address with the alternate host name will automatically
generate a corresponding DNS A-record for that hast name. Thus DNS
requires far less central administration.

[Bug 349919] Re: ssh client sometimes hangs

2009-03-31 Thread Tony Luck
** Description changed:

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 8.10
  Release: 8.10
  $ apt-cache policy openssh-client
  openssh-client:
Installed: 1:5.1p1-3ubuntu1
Candidate: 1:5.1p1-3ubuntu1
Version table:
   *** 1:5.1p1-3ubuntu1 0

I have .ssh key files that I generated years ago. I copied them to
~/.ssh on my ubuntu system. Most of the time when I use ssh to run a
command on another system it works fine. Once in 50 times ssh hangs
  locally.

This is not a network problem ... same issue happens with localhost.
  E.g. if I run:

  $ while :
   do ssh localhost date
   done

It will print the date a few dozen times, then the loop hangs (^C
  interrupts it).

I tried using strace to see what was happening. The ssh process was hung
reading from a socket.
Looking back through the strace, the socket was connected to some local
keyring thing.
Here are some relevent lines from strace output:

  socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 4

[Bug 351378] Re: dhclient fails for virtual interfaces (IP aliases)

2009-03-31 Thread Tom Metro
Attached is an archive containing the output of:

  # strace -ff -F -o /tmp/dhclient.strace dhclient eth0:0
There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.pid with pid 134519072
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.6
  Copyright 2004-2007 Internet Systems Consortium.
  All rights reserved.
  For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/

  SIOCSIFADDR: Permission denied
  SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied
  SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied
Bind socket to interface: No such device

Some interesting bits include:

From dhclient.strace.9271-avahi-autoipd:

execve(/usr/sbin/avahi-autoipd, [/usr/sbin/avahi-autoipd, -k, eth0:0],
[/* 7 vars */]) = 0
[...]
open(/var/run//avahi-autoipd.eth0:0.pid, O_RDWR) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
write(2, Failed to kill daemon: No such f..., 48) = 48
write(2, \n, 1) = 1
exit_group(1) = ?

That avahi-autoipd is trying to access /var/run/avahi-autoipd.eth0:0.pid may be
by design, or may be a bug. I don't know enough about avahi to know whether it
normally has a separate daemon running for each interface, and if so, whether
that should apply to virtual interfaces.

I saw a similar error in some of the messages output by dhclient, where
it was trying to create a PID file for itself that incorporated the
virtual device name. Again, should it be running a separate instance of
the daemon for each virtual interface?

And from dhclient.strace.9272-ifconfig:

execve(/sbin/ifconfig, [ifconfig, eth0:0, inet, 0, up], [/* 7 vars

This call to ifconfig seems to be the source of the errors. I'm puzzled how you
can get an EACCES error on a newly created socket while running as root, if
SELinux or AppArmor isn't involved (as far as I'm aware).

If I run the above command directly:

# /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 inet 0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address

Sure enough, same results. Using 0.0.0.0 also fails, but substitute a
real IP address for the zero placeholder and we get:

# /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 inet 192.168.0.210 up
# ifconfig
[...]
eth0:0Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:61:4b:d1:33
  inet addr:192.168.0.210 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
  Interrupt:16
[...]

It seems the EACCES error is incorrect and misleading, and the call should
instead return an error indicating that the address is invalid.

I'm assuming dhclient is calling ifconfig in this fashion in order to
create the virtual device, and if successful, is going to go back after
obtaining an IP address via DHCP and update the interface.

I gather some internals in ifconfig or the kernel changed.

[Bug 352164] [NEW] PulseAudio needs to be removed from being initialized by default

2009-03-31 Thread Craig A. Eddy
Public bug reported:

PROBLEM: PulseAudio is unable to determine basic information about my
sound system, despite the fact that the information is readily
available.

System is a Dell Inspiron 530N
Processor - Intel Core2, 1.60GHz
Memory - 1 Gig
Video Card - NVidia GeForce 7300LE
Sound Card - Intel 82801I (ICH 9 family) HD Audio Controller
Operating System: Ubuntu 9.04 Beta (Jaunty Jackalope)
Linux Kernel - 2.6.28-11-generic
This system is up-to-date with package updates as of March 30, 2009, 10:54 PM
Mountain Standard Time (UTC -7), or April 1, 2009, 05:00 UTC

This card is capable of AT LEAST 44100 Hz sampling and AT LEAST 5.1
Surround Sound. Yet what I get from PulseAudio (via the system log) is:

Mar 30 16:18:51 tyche-jaunty pulseaudio[3270]: alsa-util.c: Device hw:1 doesn't
support 44100 Hz, changed to 22050 Hz.
Mar 30 16:18:51 tyche-jaunty pulseaudio[3270]: alsa-util.c: Device hw:1 doesn't
support 2 channels, changed to 1.

This is an unacceptable situation, made worse by the fact that it takes
extraordinary measures to turn off PulseAudio so that Alsa (which IS
installed) can do it's job. Monaural sound, to someone listening to
serious, Classical music is unacceptable. Installing PulseAudio and
initializing it by default is a regression of ability. Installing it
and initializing it by default then hiding any ability to kill it is
Microsoft style thinking. We are supposed to be better than that.

SOLUTION: Stop initializing PulseAudio by default. If people want to
install it and use it, it should be a choice.

Dominique, I did finally get my DBT-122 to do as you described, i.e. I
stop bluetooth, then pull the USB dongle out, put it back in, do
hciconfig and then hcitool. I dunno what I messed up last time I tried
it.

I can now scan for devices and connect to and query info from my N95
using hcitool, so at least some bits do indeed work even on my computer.

[Bug 335307] Re: Please enable language support for Crimean Tatar (Crimean Turkish) locale (crh)

2009-03-31 Thread Reşat SABIQ
Despite my inability to manually get it to work, as mentioned in my last
comment, Martin might well be right about /etc/gdm/locale.conf being the
roadblock, and it might start working when the package is built in a manner
that addresses this.
I hope this can be addressed in gdm in time for jaunty release.

P.S. As a side note, in case this tells anything to anybody, crh is also
missing from the following, but i do not know whether that affects the gdm
languages list issue:
a. /usr/share/language-selector/data
b. /usr/share/locale/

[Bug 351080] Re: Glyphs drop out when bold attribute applied

2009-03-31 Thread John Jason Jordan
OK, I installed Fontforge and did some checking. All of the faces I
cited do have all four standard fonts (regular, italic, bold, bold-
italic). However, they all have exactly the same number of glyphs for
each of the four fonts.

Furthermore, I have numerous other fonts installed on my computer that I
did not cite because most people would not have them. And the problem
occurs with all of them, including Adobe Pro fonts (except I cannot
confirm for OOo because OOo cannot use Adobe OTF fonts).

Thanks for the suggestion. But I'm curious what led you to it. What do
you know about how fonts work on Linux that I do not know?

[Bug 300935] Re: missing /etc/X11/rgb.txt file and broken link to it

2009-03-31 Thread Cruncher
For the same reason I petition that the Importance should be changed
from Wishlist to Medium. The missing file is not a wishlist item,
since it *breaks* the usability of several utilities in several official
Ubuntu packages. The correct Importance would be Medium, in
accordance with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xcolors/+bug/304567/comments/6
from a duplicate bug.

[Bug 352171] [NEW] [Zepto Znote] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-03-31 Thread paraiko
Public bug reported:

I do not knwo whether this is a duplicate of the other suspend/resume
bugs (in ohter notebook brands)

What happened is dat the screen went black after suspending from the
powerbutton menu But the pc did not actually suspend and was frozen. The
only way out was pressing the powerbutton for 4 seconds.

In general this happens more often, but not predictable.
It also happens sometimes on computer shutdown, in that case ubuntu seems to
shut down properly, but the computer does not switch off.

This was the first time apport generated a report that actually made it
to launchpad .

[Bug 352178] [NEW] [Hewlett-Packard HP Mini] late resume failure

2009-03-31 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Hi there,

My apologies if this is a dupe, but I didn't know any way of
transferring the automatically collected data to another bug report.

Anyway, the machine is a HP Mini 1010NR and this happens reasonably
often. It might be my imagination, but it seems to happen more often
after automatic Power Devil suspend / hibernates than when I do it
myself from the system menu.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have

[Bug 352179] [NEW] trackpad scrolling poor in Acer Aspire One 10.1

2009-03-31 Thread Alan Young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

With the 10.1 inch version of the Acer Aspire One, scrolling using the
trackpad is difficult to use. It would appear to be restricted to a very
narrow border of the trackpad and cannot be achieved reliably.

This has been seen with Jaunty alphas 4-6 and with daily-live from
24/03. This is a regression from 8.10.

Further reports of this problem can be found in:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1095616

2009-03-31 Thread z
I believe I have correctly fixed the duplication issue. However I am not
an expert packager, so I am not sure exactly how the side-by-side
installation (wx2.6 and wx2.8) should work, so the control files may
need modification. Also, do the wx2.x-i18n packages really conflict?
Should python-wxaddons be renamed to python-wxaddons2.8 ?

Fix Method:
setup.py was patched to include the extra_directory in all setup calls
debian/rules changed to be compatible with new locations, better
python-wxaddons handling
debian/rules added linking to .egg-info files from wx2.x-gtk2-unicode dirs

I currently have wx2.6 and 2.8 side by side (except i18n), and I can run
spe with the built-in python shell (my reason to patch)

Attached is the diff.gz for wx2.8, wx2.6 will follow

[Bug 204857] Re: USB port disabled by hup (EMI? re enabling)

2009-03-31 Thread Octavi
I know it's an old bug but I'm still stuck with the I2C errors. I'm
using Ubuntu 8.04 with kernel version 2.6.24-23 (upgraded from 7.10),
and the errors are still there. I recently upgraded v4l drivers and
switched to 1.20 firmware, with no luck. I also tried the delay solution
founded by hugolp. Is it possible to continue with this issue? Here's an

2. Attempt to launch the about me plugin via preferences.
3, Error message appears stating: There was an error while trying to get the
addressbook information Evolution Data Server can't handle the protocol.
4. Reinstall evolution-data-server.
5. Launch about me successfully.

Fix: Have evolution-data-server marked as a dependency of the About me

[Bug 352180] [NEW] libgpgme11 pulls in both gnupg and gnupg2

2009-03-31 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Package: libgpgme11
Depends: libc6 (= 2.8), libgpg-error0 (= 1.4), libpth20 (= 2.0.7), gnupg (=
1.4.6-2), gnupg2 (= 2.0.4)

This causes both gnupg and gnupg2 to land on the Ubuntu CDs, which in
turn pulls in gnupg-agent and pinentry-gtk2. This not only wastes space,
but also shadows seahorse for gpg passphrase entry, which looks ugly.

[Bug 351244] Re: Wifi Broadcom on 9.04 beta

2009-03-31 Thread AmSan
I think I've found a work around to this problem - which may shed some
light on why its happening.

I tried to install the Broadcom driver using:
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

b43-fwcutter was already the latest version, on configuring however saw
the following error:

..
Setting up b43-fwcutter (1:011-5) ...
--2009-03-31 07:09:56--

So:

I followed the instructions from:

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

See under: You are using the b43 driver from linux-2.6.25 or newer

You probably won't need to make the executable from source.
Just download the firmware and it should work fine.

[Bug 300935] Re: missing /etc/X11/rgb.txt file and broken link to it

2009-03-31 Thread Cruncher
One way to fix this would be for every package requiring rgb.txt to
bundle a copy of that file, as several packages already have done (e.g.,
pixmap (bug #248657), emacs, and a few others). This approach, however,
doesn't make a lot of sense, since every package then needs to drag this
identical file around, and should there be any changes, everyone of
those packages would have to be updated once again.

The only reasonable approach would be, to have *some* single package
provide the file, either at /etc/X11/rgb.txt, or at a FHS conform
location (in which case all packages requiring it would have to be
adapted - but only once!).

It seems, in the past there must have been a similar discussion, and the
file was moved(?) to the package xrgb
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xrgb/+publishinghistory . However,
this package was deleted in Hardy, moving the file bak(?) to x11-common,
and it appears the whole discussion now started once again because the
file was removed from xorg.

[Bug 199687] Re: [Intrepid] [Hardy] Asus F5N laptop freezes on restart but will shut down

2009-03-31 Thread garybrlow
This bug has been there since 8.04 and still exists with 9.04 beta now.
Apparently its limited to ASUS Laptops.

Related bugS to being unable to restart:
1) Restart either hangs on the Xubuntu Progress Screen or shows a gray screen
with randomly appearing black and white vertical and horizontal lines.
2) Creating terminal sessions/screens is impossible. Ctrl+F1 and the rest gives
a gray screen with randomly appearing black and white vertical and horizontal
lines.

System Specs:
Laptop: ASUS X80NE
Processor: AMD Turion64 X2 32bit Mode
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 7000M
OS: Jaunty 9.04 Beta/Windows XP dual boot
Linux Kernel Version: 2.6.28-11-generic
