[Blueprint network-authentication] Make Ubuntu authenticate against Network Authentication services

2009-04-30 Thread Ro
Blueprint changed by Ro:

Whiteboard changed to:

Updated spec URL, added in the text from UDS

2007-01-31 kamion: Approved (as it stands, it's relatively simple), but
you're going to have to get a move on! authtool doesn't seem to have
made any progress since September, and Samba 3.0.24 hasn't been released
yet which may prove to be a blocker. Please keep me updated. Also, is
the 30 days time estimate still accurate?

2007-02-31 svg: as laptops are becoming ubiquitious, it would be
important to make configuration as such that som form of caching is
involved (ldap cache, sync to local passwd, ..?) such that user is able
to log in when not connected to the corporate network

2009-04-30 ro: @svg: LDAP Cached Credentials solves these problems in a
quite elegant manner. So no problem here.

[Bug 368585] Re: php5 crashed with SIGSEGV in _Unwind_ForcedUnwind()

2009-04-30 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Probably related (or same as) http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=42850

That bug is caused by http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=24507 which is a
(not so good) workaround for a glibc bug
(http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2644). If the glibc bug
is fixed in the currently distributed Ubuntu glibc, then the workaround
for MySQL bug 24507 could be removed which in turn fixes the bug 42850.

[Blueprint ldap-defaultdit-usergrp-mgmt] Default LDAP DIT for user and group managment

2009-04-30 Thread John Pugh
Blueprint changed by John Pugh:

Whiteboard changed to:

dendrobates: This is a good idea, but I would like to see a community
discussion about DIT layout. i.e. the use of dc=example,dc=com, over
o=example.com. I have almost always used dc, but not for any good
reason.

ru: having DIT in any form is very important for corporations. this
feature can (in future) replace MS AD ecosystem.

koptein: DIT and ldap means not (mail-, directory, or other) domains.
dc=example,dc=com is for a domain, also o=example.com is a domain and
both aren't very good for a bigger company structure. One example - for
better clarification - i use .uk (or .de, nl, ...).

If you start with dc=example,dc=uk and your company grow up with another
location, say example.br, how can s/o layout this new structure. Same for
o=example.uk and o= or ou= or c= ...  example.br? Always a new DIT for a new
location? The important thing is not the domain (whatever domain), is is the
name of the structure, the comany. So for one of the best (L)DAP implementation
(NDS or eDirectory) nearly everyone recomends an o=example -- without any com,
org, net, uk, br, ... and other locations (or parts of an comypnay like sales,
hr, stock, ...) are in the second level in the DIT, like ou=br.
LDAP is not only for users and groups, what about computers, DNS, DHCP,
Harddisk, Pools, Volumes (LVM), SoftwareRAID-Level, Rights,
Clusterconfiguration, Loadbalancing, Routing, RIP, BGP, Applications and many
more? Think bigger but start small.

ru: 2 koptein - And what to do if we have many companies at one
server(s)? just create o=MyCompany and o=AsteriskCompany and
o=AnotherOneCompany? What is the difference with dc=MyCompany,dc=com
and dc=AsteriskCompany,dc=com and dc=AnotherCompany,dc=com ? We need
some strategy for DIT with many locations / contries / companies.

2 all - From Ubuntu survey - it seems that Ubuntu server are usually
used by SOHO, and they do not use Ubuntu as directory server because of
lack DIT feature. For me it means that better to have DIT good for SOHO
and suitable for big companies. From my point DIT in Ubuntu is most
important feature in 9.04 release.

ru: is there any work with this blueprint? if not - may be use eBox as official
DIT for Ubuntu?
or may be Canonical do not want to create any competitor to their proprietary
Landscape. Is any ideas?

ivoks: let's break away from o=organization and dc=domain,dc=com.
Clearly, both are false thinking since, as ru said, this logic doesn't
cover more organizations under one 'o' or more domains under one 'dc'.
Let's start thinking about server as a top organization. So, instead
'o=Organization Name', let's do 'o=Server Name'. That way we could have
lots of organizations and lots of domains on the same server. We should
just follow the logic of setup. We setup domain/organization on server -
make the server top tree.

2009-04-29 ro: The implementation of a directory server is essential for
Linux business adoption of all sizes - from small to medium to large
enterprises. In the year 2009, central authentification should be
available out-of-the-box, especially for a distribution that wants to
conquer the (corporate) desktops and servers. There are a few good
implementations out there (Mandriva Directory Server, eBox) which might
inspire the work to be done in Ubuntu. An equivalent to Group Policies
is important too, but out of the scope for this spec. However, an LDAP
directory server is the foundation of all the other services built on
top of it, so let's try to get it ready for 9.10.

2009-04-30 ro: If you like to think in larger scales, have a look at
FreeIPA [http://freeipa.org/page/Main_Page]. It is an implementation by
Red Hat/Fedora which provides exactly what is proposed here plus many
things more. So not only centralized user/group authentication and
management, but also e.g. Group Policies and Single Sign-on. The nice
thing is, one if its main focuses is on usability and ease of
administration in conjunction with flexibility. Isn't that what we
sorely afflicted admins have been waiting for all the time? Btw, Bug
#259547 ([needs-packaging] FreeIPA) covers exactly this.

2009-04-30 jpugh: The entire reason for a directory is to organize
around your network. I disagree with ivoks view as having dc=server as
this setup would create unnecessary traversal for trivial items. The
logical setup is to allow a new directory installation to setup their
own DIT the way they want to vs dictating what ubuntu thinks they need.
Recommendations are ok and the standard since LDAP came on the horizon
in the mid-90's have not changed much because they work. Keep it simple,
because any relatively knowledgeable directory administrator will change
it to suit the business. What is needed is a default schema discussion
as the schema will dictate the ease of directory management.
Unfortunately openldap still requires restart to reset the schema. I
vote that we take the FreeIPA DIT and go with it.

[Bug 364105] Re: Regression in Winbind: Cannot map SID-UID when using read-only idmap-backend ad, rfc2307 uids

2009-04-30 Thread Edgar Holleis
s/map/resolve/

winbind 2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3 cannot resolve SID-UID. The mapping is there
in the AD, automatically created by the user-add script. However, the
new new version does not return UIDs any more. GIDs continue to work.

AD is and was alway readonly. To my knowledge Samba has only recently
gained the feature of stacking idmapings, where you layer a writable
idmap over the readonly AD-map to handle the case where Samba wants to
create a new mapping. When Samba 3.3.2 failed to work as before, I
consulted the documentation and found the suggestion that I should layer
a writable idmap over the AD-map. I tried to do that, but without
success. Samba still fails to resovle UIDs from AD, but instead of
complaining it silently allocates a new (and wrong) mapping in the
writable backend.

As far as I can remember (its been a couple of week since I found the issue),
what works is:
name - SID (wbinfo -n)
SID - name (wbinfo -s)
SID - GID (wbinfo -Y)
GID - SID (wbinfo -G)

What does not work:
SID - UID (wbinfo -S)
UID - SID (wbinfo -U)
And yes, I used SIDs that do represent User-Objects and that have a
UID-Attribute in AD.

[Bug 348126] Re: ssh are using ssh-userauth but ignores private key

2009-04-30 Thread sideshowmel
To recreate the problem that I am seeing, you MUST use a password-
protected private key. Mine is 4096-bit RSA, but I've done a bit of
searching and see this is happening for users with 1024 and 2048 bit RSA
keys as well.

[Bug 370000] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1 .31-1ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: el subproceso post-installation script devolvió el código de s alida de error 127

2009-04-30 Thread Andreas Olsson
Based on these lines I'd like to make a guess

Configurando mysql-server-5.1 (5.1.31-1ubuntu2) ...
 * Stopping MySQL database server mysqld
   ...done.
 * /etc/init.d/mysql: WARNING: /etc/mysql/my.cnf cannot be read. See
README.Debian.gz
 * Starting MySQL database server mysqld
   ...done.
/etc/init.d/mysql: line 115: /etc/mysql/debian-start: No existe el fichero ó
directorio
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action start failed.

You have previously had some mysql version installed? After uninstalling
it (without purging) you manually removed the files inside /etc/mysql/,
perhaps the entire folder?

Assuming that is the case, which would fit the error messages, the
package manager would still believe the mysql configuration files being
installed, hence becoming confused when they aren't present.

The critical packages in this case is by the way mysql-common. It is
most often installed indirectly as a dependency.

I know Skype is a closed source application and nothing you can fix, but
I doubt it has anything to do with this specific bug.

2009-04-30 Thread molecule-eye
@Bartek: I haven't looked at the script, but it's extremely easy to add

will automate the process for you (as already recommended by sunken).
However, as noted by Francois, the mtrr entry is reset if you kill X

[Bug 369170] Re: App launcher dialog bad right-to-left layout

2009-04-30 Thread Michael Terry
OK, netbook-launcher 1.6.22netbook0unr5 is *way* better in RTL
languages. The sidebars change position and go from right-to-left, the
iconview is layed out RTL, and the app launcher dialog that started this
bug is also RTL if the text is. Looks way better (though, it's really
confusing for a poor LTR man like myself, but it's consistent with the
rest of our apps).

[Bug 369996] Re: Two menu entries to Removable Drives and Media

2009-04-30 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 340532] Re: evolution 2.25.92 evolution-mapi evolution exits on mapi preferences authentication.

2009-04-30 Thread Ryan Steele
I'm experiencing the same issue. When I first tried to authenticate
against the Exchange server, I got an error saying
CreateProfileStore:MAPI_E_NO_ACCESS and the program stopped
responding. Subsequent attempts to authenticate are resulting in the
segfault. I've installed (hopefully) all the relevant dbgsym packages
and performed a backtrace.

[Bug 267185] Re: [HD 3650] white screen before login screen

2009-04-30 Thread Sarven Capadisli
I have a Lenovo W500 with HD 3650 and 3GB of Memory, running Ubuntu
Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 Linux version 2.6.28-11-generic.

I had previously installed xorg-driver-fglrx. I got everything back to
normal speed (e.g., no lag when dragging windows) when I rebooted
(simply logging out and back in doesn't do it it) after the second set
of steps (Problem: Need to fully remove -fglrx and reinstall -ati from
scratch) at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver
mentioned by Bryce Harrington (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/267185/comments/15 ).

However, I still can't use the Visual Effects - Extra. It gives me
Desktop effects could not be enabled.

Maybe it's because it does not seem to be the fglrx driver anymore.
lsmod | grep fglrx gives nothing, anyway.

 Hope this helps.

I've just download somes pictures from a mass storage device. Mass
rename theses pictures to match the ones in my directory.

I've just missed to type the extension (.JPG) during the mass rename dialog. I
can see all my images in my directory (thunar/nautilus) but not in gthumb.
