[Bug 376359] [NEW] Truncating NetBIOS name don't work

2009-05-14 Thread Юрий Чудновский
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

[2009/05/14 08:23:22, 0] nmbd/nmbd_nameregister.c:register_name(483)
register_name: NetBIOS name VSERVER-TERMINAL is too long. Truncating to
VSERVER-TERMINA

But, VSERVER-TERMINA did not seen in network, works only by IP address.
Manual renaming hostname, for example, to v-terminal and restarting samba
solves a problem - computer reveals in net.
But it is still bug, I just not sure - it is really a bug of nmbd or some other
samba part.

Tech info:
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04
Codename: jaunty
Linux v-terminal 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux
nmbd version 3.3.2
samba version: 2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3

[Bug 373736] [NEW] Upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty uninstalled mysql server

2009-05-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I've just noticed my mysql server was not running after having upgraded
to jaunty a couple of weeks ago. I could call /etc/init.d/mysql start
but nothing 'started'.

Using the Synaptic Package Manager I saw mysql 5 was not installed. I
installed the mysql server package and used phpmyadmin to see my
existing databases were in fact intact. This was not expected behaviour
not sure if it is design-intent and can't recall if the upgrader asked
me any questions related to mysql.

[Bug 353594] Re: Apache trying to start before network interfaces are up

2009-05-14 Thread Alex F
I'm having a similar problem and I wonder if it's related. In my case,
I have a script that mounts network shares which is called from
rc.local. During boot, the mounts all fail because the network isn't
configured yet; mounts by hostname fail DNS lookup, and mounts by IP
report network is unreachable. The same script run after booting
mounts everything just fine.

I also can't figure out what is meant by NetworkManager in system
mode; my networks (as defined in NM) are marked available to all
users which I assumed would make them system-level networks, but they
still don't seem to be available at boot time when rc.local is run.

Additionally it requires the mysql-client package which only points to

Perhaps the solution is to change the dependency to a suggest?

+--exec $DAEMON -- $OPTARGS --writepid /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid \
+$DAEMONARG $STATUSARG --cd $CONFIG_DIR \
+--config $CONFIG_DIR/$NAME.conf || STATUS=1
 }

Ubuntu used to modify the way the daemon were started:

+STATUS=0
 # Check to see if it's already started...
 if test -e /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid ; then
log_failure_msg Already running (PID file exists)
- STATUS=0
 else
   $DAEMON $OPTARGS --writepid /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid \
- $DAEMONARG $STATUSARG --cd $CONFIG_DIR \
- --config $CONFIG_DIR/$NAME.conf || STATUS=1
+ $DAEMONARG $STATUSARG --cd $CONFIG_DIR \
+  --config $CONFIG_DIR/$NAME.conf $script_security  /dev/null || STATUS=1
 fi
+log_end_msg $STATUS

However in the proposed merge, the old Debian behavior is restored:

-start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --oknodo \
---pidfile /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid \
---exec $DAEMON -- $OPTARGS --writepid /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid \
-$DAEMONARG $STATUSARG --cd $CONFIG_DIR \
---config $CONFIG_DIR/$NAME.conf || STATUS=1
+STATUS=0
+# Check to see if it's already started...
+if test -e /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid ; then
+ log_failure_msg Already running (PID file exists)
+else
+ $DAEMON $OPTARGS --writepid /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid \
+ $DAEMONARG $STATUSARG --cd $CONFIG_DIR \
+  --config $CONFIG_DIR/$NAME.conf $script_security  /dev/null || STATUS=1
+fi
+log_end_msg $STATUS

Could the Ubuntu changes be ported to the new way Debian uses to start
daemon?

This isn't an Apache bug, hence I'm marking this report as invalid.

If you can recall that incident which happend a two days ago, and it

Anyway, it seems as if your system now is in a state where it is missing
at least one system group. This might very well cause you other trouble
as well. See if anyone in Answers or Ubuntuforums can help you get

2009-05-14 Thread Thierry Carrez
@Andres:
It's trickier than that. Doing it purely the Debian way will probably restore
bug 280428, where we chose to differ from Debian. Maybe it's possible to use
start-stop-daemon and still pass /dev/null... This would need to be checked
with a password-protected autostarted VPN for example. Otherwise I would advise
to keep the Ubuntu chunk...

Ohh I now understand. What about $script_security???

So, will doing something similar to the following solve this issue?

+start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --oknodo \

+--exec $DAEMON -- $OPTARGS --writepid /var/run/openvpn.$NAME.pid \
+$DAEMONARG $STATUSARG --cd $CONFIG_DIR \

[Bug 279186] Re: x86_64 kernel oops on boot (dual-core Atom 330 board D945GCLF2)

2009-05-14 Thread Adam Thompson
Also confirming that with Intel BIOS LF94510J.86A, Ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit)
installs and operates correctly.
Note that even with updated BIOS, I am unable to correctly boot or operate the
8.10 OS release.
On the other hand, going WAY back to an old v6 disc I found, works fine
(presumably due to the *lack* of ACPI support in that vintage).

I appears that a workaround is still desirable and possible for the 8.x
LTS stream, and likely for the 9.x stream also - we have multiple
hardware vendors represented in this tree of bug reports, not all of
whom are providing updated BIOSes. The problem appears to be isolated
to ACPI initialization: booting non-ACPI-aware kernels seems to work
just fine, as do other OSes that do not rely on the ACPI DTs for
hardware initialization, e.g. older OpenBSD and NetBSD, DOS, etc.

I think this should be re-escalated to kernel development; there's
already precedent for in-kernel ACPI fixups (e.g. ASUS P4B-DS
motherboard, off the top of my head) and it looks like this will likely
affect a wide variety of Atom-based systems. Odd that it's Atom-
specific, but chipset-independent, though.

Apr 29 04:55:16 ubuntu grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --no-floppy

The designated partitions (all extended) have been created from OS/2 in order
to avoid OS/2 LVM and boot manager issues.
/home =1GB, / =4GB, /swap =3.5GB.
I then pointed the installer to use sda8 as /home, sda9 as / and sda10 as /swap
and also format the first 2 as JFS.
I further chose in the Extended, Enhanced, Advanced or whatever the exact name
of this option is, to put the initial GRUB boot-loader code into the PBR of
sda9, in another installation trial into sda8, but neither worked.

The installation, no matter if started from Gnome via the icon or
already at the beginning from the Desktop-CD's boot-options, always
failed in the same way and I ended up with the Live-CD Desktop.

If I'm not mistaken, there then should be /target/boot/grub, however
/grub doesn't exist there.

though.

Worked for me except,

echo exit 0 /etc/init.d/apport

rm /etc/init.d/apport

file or directory doesn't exist

However, like I said, the update worked.

[Bug 210300] Re: [Hardy] Laptop (HP Compaq 8510p) is too hot.

2009-05-14 Thread Alex Maguran
Jaunty (with ATI proprietary drivers; the measures above are with Intrepid and
ATI OS drivers):
cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ*/temperature
temperature: 45 C
temperature: 45 C
temperature: 40 C
temperature: 38 C
temperature: 25 C
temperature: 35 C

I think that all this might be related to the GPU (ATI) and its drivers.
I have noticed a major change in fan's activity when I have switched
from OS ATI drivers to the proprietary one. It behaves similar to
Windows.

[Bug 376359] [NEW] Truncating NetBIOS name don't work

2009-05-14 Thread Юрий Чудновский
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

[2009/05/14 08:23:22, 0] nmbd/nmbd_nameregister.c:register_name(483)
register_name: NetBIOS name VSERVER-TERMINAL is too long. Truncating to
VSERVER-TERMINA

But, VSERVER-TERMINA did not seen in network, works only by IP address.
Manual renaming hostname, for example, to v-terminal and restarting samba
solves a problem - computer reveals in net.
But it is still bug, I just not sure - it is really a bug of nmbd or some other
samba part.

Re: [Bug 192176] Re: Scanner output always JPEG compressed

2009-05-14 Thread Andrey Paramonov
2009/5/13 dwelch91 dwelc...@gmail.com:
Not commenting on the merits of this defect report, but I will point out
that this has been the default in HPLIP since our first release, and was
the default in HPOJ, the previous project for HP print/scan support (in
other words, this default has been in place for approximately 9 years,
it was not changed recently, AFAIK).

Hello!

As of now, I cannot really confirm or disprove your statement, because
I do not have older packages any more. Anyway, is it possible to
implement global config option to turn the undesired behavior off?

Thanks for your effort,
Andrey

[Bug 373728] Re: kickoff applications menu empty after kde 4.2.3 update

2009-05-14 Thread Markus Korn
hi timk,
from [0] I can see that version 4.2.3 of KDE is not in any official archive of
ubuntu. Where did you get this packages from? Did you enable the kubuntu-ppa?
As you are using software which is not officially supported, I'm marking this
bug as Invalid for ubuntu. Please report this bug to the people who provide
this package.

[Bug 310760] Re: Built-in microphone on Lenovo USB webcam doesn't work when hald is running

2009-05-14 Thread Karol Krizka
An earlier message claims that this is fixed in Interpid/Jaunty. However I have
a Lenovo USB Webcam, and I'm experiencing the exact same symptoms in Jaunty.
1) Plugin in Webcam.
2) Microphone capture doesn't work
3) Stop HAL and replugin webcam
3) Microphone capture works

So is this bug really fixed?

Re: [Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2009-05-14 Thread KhaaL
Changing to writeback mode is not harmful, however it did not help in my
case. I got improved performance but i still have stutters during I/O
activity, the more intense the lower response from the GUI

Paulo's solution working for others? Is it safe to try?

I do a lot of large movie transfers. I didn't notice this issue in 8.10
x64 but after 9.04 install performance during large transfer is
unbearable. Reminds me of dialup days but for local transfers.

Status in The Linux Kernel: Invalid

Status in “linux-source-2.6.22” source package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

When compared with 2.6.15 in feisty, heavy disk I/O causes increased iowait
times and affects desktop responsiveness in 2.6.22

this appears to be a regression from 2.6.15 where iowait is much lower and
desktop responsiveness is unaffected with the same I/O load

Easy to reproduce with tracker - index the same set of files with 2.6.15
kernel and 2.6.22 kernel and the difference in desktop responsiveness is
 massive

I have not confirmed if a non-tracker process which does heavy disk i/o
(especially writing) replicates this yet - will do further investigation
 soon

[Bug 376364] [NEW] Evolution stops connecting to internet

2009-05-14 Thread bdoe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

After an indeterminable period of time after being launched, Evolution
will no longer communicate with the Internet. Internet connection is
fine, all other applications can access it without any problems, but
Evolution will hang trying to load images or upload/download new
messages. This behavior appears most likely to happen after importing
messages, after creating new message-filtering rules, or simply after
being left open for a few hours. The only remedy is to shut down and
restart Evolution.

It is important to note that Evolution itself does NOT appear to be hung
at any time. It just simply acts like it cannot find an internet
connection and waits indefinitely for one to appear. Evolution does
respond appropriately to user cancellation of image downloading or
connection attempts to POP3 servers.

Affects: Evolution 2.26.1 on Ubuntu 9.04

[Bug 376108] Re: [RV250] Very slow performance

2009-05-14 Thread Cima
I was maybe a bit too optimist about the use of XAA. The performance
increase is evident, but it's still a fraction of what it used to be, I
realize after some use. The problem is still particularly evident when,
say, listening to mp3 and browsing with firefox. While before each
scrolling or new page would fill up CPU and cause a lag in mp3
reproduction, now it happens, I would say, around 20% of the times.

[Bug 373209] Re: Saved screenshot doesn't appears until user edits file

2009-05-14 Thread KOT
Thanks for information and links. I'm really novice in Ubuntu. As for package,
i'm using Ubuntu Desktop 9.04, kernel linux 2.6.28-12-generic, and as for
graphic environment, i'm using gnome. In the description of bug reproducing I
had made a mistake. Under Dashboard i mean Desktop. So, for reproducing
bug, you should open Desktop, click any file and press F2 button. After that,
on keyboard press Print Screen button and in appeared menu click Save
button.
In my work, sometimes I have to do a lot of screenshots. My screenshots are
stored in the Desktop. How I was surprised when one day I made a 7 screenshots,
and suddenly did not find them on Desktop. It turned out that before doing the
screenshots, I began to rename file to Desktop, and forgot to complete the
renaming. And when I have finished renaming the file, all my screenshots have
appeared on the Desktop. Now, I hope my explanation more accurate. =)

[Bug 369048] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader()

2009-05-14 Thread OS/2-User
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 260001 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260001

My problem is an exact déjà-vu of the 2007 bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/123102/comments/5
(which itself links back as early as 2005 to Bug #14010) and I'm almost
willing to bet, that it still has the very same, still unfixed cause as
it did FOUR years ago.

Why does nobody seem to care to fix show-stopper bugs like this, preventing
nothing short of the installation itself?
Why does everybody seem to care only about the latest gimmicks and eye-candy
being added to the desktop, while the foundation is still partly made out of
flaky plywood?
That recalls strong memories of the Win-9x alleged luxury penthouse sitting on
top of a flimsy DOS shack (cudos to c't computer magazine's editorial of that
time) ;-)

How many decades more does it take, before finally someone takes on this
assignment and fixes it for Ubuntu once and for all?

[Bug 370287] Re: skge module stops transmitting

2009-05-14 Thread Ike Panhc
Just click the Update description / tags under the descriptions, then
you can modify the description

** Description changed:

i have DLink 530T (1Gb ethenet card). skge is driver for it. but since update
to ubuntu 9.04 (full reinstall). some times it stops transmitting packets (and
not back to work). ifconfig eth1 shows that rx is changing but tx is not. pings
are not going... the card on the internet port, so i lost internet periodically.
the `save` commands that help me to return it to work is
#modprobe -r skge modprobe skge service networking restart
but after a few times i run it skge breaks work as described above in a few
seconds after `save` command. and only computer restart helps.

it looks like this from changelog for 2.6.29.2 (skge disables the TX
  queue):

  commit 9fc79ab9a371b45166d80ef18411ea47cf8e3195
  Author: Michal Schmidt mschm...@redhat.com
  Date: Tue Apr 14 15:16:55 2009 -0700

skge: fix occasional BUG during MTU change

  upstream commit: d119b3927994e3d620d6adb0dd1ea6bf24427875

  The BUG_ON(skge-tx_ring.to_use != skge-tx_ring.to_clean) in skge_up()
was sometimes observed when setting MTU.

skge_down() disables the TX queue, but then reenables it by mistake via
  skge_tx_clean().
Fix it by moving the waking of the queue from skge_tx_clean() to the
other caller. And to make sure start_xmit is not in progress on another
  CPU, skge_down() should call netif_tx_disable().

The bug was reported to me by Jiri Jilek whose Debian system sometimes
failed to boot. He tested the patch and the bug did not happen anymore.

[Bug 365798] Re: cpu frequency scaling not supported after upgrading to 9.04

2009-05-14 Thread retief
Upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with Upgrade-manager

After reading Nusch's message about Grub not updating, I had a look
there

2.6.28-11-generic was in my '/boot' but not in 'menu.lst' - menu.lst
still pointed to 8.10's last two images - the oldest wich did not exist
anymore. :o

sudo update-grub saw the new image in /boot but still did not update the
menu.lst

I then manually changed the image names in menu.lst and did 'sudo update grub'
- now I have the correct image loading and cpu-scaling-applet does not complain
anymore
Now to change the profile - thanks Nusch for the pointer
Grub not updating alrady logged:

[Bug 202009] Re: update-grub not updating menu.lst

2009-05-14 Thread retief
+1 on upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 not updating the menu.lst on amd-64 - worked
fine on my i386 upgrade
I manually changed the names for the images referred in the menu.lst
Now the Grub menu displays correctly and boots correct image.
Sudo update-grub did not write correct image names to menu.lst although I ran
it - my outputs were similar to previous reports
I came accross this because cpu-frequency-scaling didn't work:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/365798

images in boot:
2.6.28-11-generic
2.6.27-7-generic

Image 2.6.24-x-generic was referred to in menu.lst but did not exist
anymore.

[Bug 376367] [NEW] Repeated ACPI Errors and Exceptions in Log Files

2009-05-14 Thread nopycckn
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope.
I'm receiving ACPI error and exception messages over and over again, regularly.
They're definitely showing up in the following log files:

messages
kern.log
syslog

May 13 23:36:05 one kernel: [11552.529137] ACPI Error (psargs-0358):

parse/execution failed [\_GPE._L1C] (Node f6c13450), AE_NOT_FOUND
May 13 23:36:05 one kernel: [11552.529180] ACPI Exception (evgpe-0571):

AE_NOT_FOUND, while evaluating GPE method [_L1C] [20080926]
This is a section, showing two seperate occassions. This happens somewhat
regularly. I have installed Ubuntu a few different times, trying different
options like acpi=off, noapic, noalpic, etc. Nothing will work. I use the
update manager regularly, I check daily for updates. I have not attempted to
use power savings options or anything of that sort, but I haven't had one
apparent problem caused by this. It also happened with Ubuntu 8.04, and when
using Fedora 10 I receive many more of the exact same messages, always in
groups of three and always repeating (at least somewhat) regularly.

Re: [Bug 339783] Re: Separate X-screen, apps launched from 2nd screen appear on first screen

2009-05-14 Thread Vincent Gerris
Dear Sebastien,

In my opinion, this is not a duplicate?
This bug is about applications not starting on the right screen, the other
is specificly on loading.
Please don't simply try to close off bugs, although I know that is
important.
I do believe the bugs are related, unfortunately Gnome devs are silent.

regards,
Vincent

Status in “gnome-desktop” source package in Ubuntu: New
Status in “gnome-panel” source package in Ubuntu: Invalid
Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-180” source package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
My system is using NVidia's separate X-screen instead of TwinView. If I
click Places-Home Folder in the 2nd screen it opens in the first screen.
 This is 100% reproducible.

 Same behaviour observed if running
 DISPLAY=:0.1 nautilus --browser
 or if running from Alt-F2

However, for gnome-terminal, running from the menus opens it in the wrong
 (first) screen, but running
 DISPLAY=:0.1 gnome-terminal
or running from Alt-F2 opens it in the correct (2nd) screen.

Firefox/thunderbird open properly in the 2nd screen in all cases.
Compiz-config settings manager has same behaviour as gnome-terminal. Problem
 seems to be non-app specific.

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1089578 shows another user with
the same problem. May be linked to the binary nvidia, am unable to test
without since I'm not aware of any way to get separate X with nv or mesa.

2009-05-14 Thread Shahar Or
Dear Michal,

I suggest you try some technical mailing lists. Point them to this bug.
I've never posted to a kernel.org list but perhaps someone will look.

Also try forums.

Good luck.
