[Bug 118930] Re: Resolver: MAXNS should be increased
Martin: the domain suffix ends up in "search" field in resolv.conf or equivalent, and that's a purely client-side expansion. All that does is to append the domain or search suffix to all queries and try those first, before trying to resolve the query as given. It doesn't matter which resolver is contacted, the resolvers should all have the same domain tree starting with the root record. Teej: The more I've thought about this, the more I end up wanting to run my own caching recursor locally. That might need some NetworkManager integration to always stick 127.0.0.1 first if there is a locally cahcing bind installed. I'm not sure this is a good default behaviour though, since it loads the common infrastructure on the internet more than using your providers caching servers... Just increasing MAXNS won't actually hurt anything (I think), unless you locally configure in more nameserver entries. I have a couple of server networks with a few hundred servers where this would really help reliability though. [Bug 378583] [NEW] application switcher & desktop wall clashes when while holding the modifier key
Public bug reported: I'm using the 'Super' modifier in both the Desktop Wall plugin (Super+left/right) and the Application Switcher (Super+tab). A common scenario for me is to switch between walls and between applications right after that. However, when I hold "Super" and press Left, pressing Tab does not work unless I release and repress Super first. [Bug 378577] [NEW] Proposal: set shadow_radius to more conservative value
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I would like to propose that we set a more conservative value for the shadow_radius in compiz. The crux of my argument would be that the shadows look too pronounced - however, this would then relegate the report outside the realm of being a bug. Therefore, putting aside aesthetic arguments of the shadow appearance, the current setting causes an unnatural sense of separation between selected menu items on the menubar and the actual menus. Also, gtk- window-decorator applies shadow to the metacity window manager decoration even when maximized, which (slightly) messes up the gradient pattern in the default Human metacity theme. These two issues would constitute a "bug" in a certain sense, therefore. [Bug 378572] [NEW] evtouch calibrate axis inversion feature needed
Public bug reported: Ever since I got an eGalax touchscreen and installed Intrepid, one problem I always had was two folds: - I need a keyboard to even be able to calibrate it, because an "enter" is required - No matter how I calibrate, the vertical direction on the screen is always inverted. Which means if I touch the top of the screen, it was as if I touched the bottom of the screen. So I went through Jaunty, and even Karmic, hoping that this problem might change, but the problem still persisted. I figured maybe no bug report was given for this. In order for my touchscreen to work properly, I need to do the following: 1) Edit: /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/50-eGalax.fdi (before Karmic) or: /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/50-eGalax.fdi (in Karmic) 2) Then I need to swap the miny and maxy values: So that section goes from: 130 197 3945 3894 To: 130 3894 3945 197 After that, then my touchscreen works properly. Another way to achieve the same result, and probably more proper, is to just add the following options without swapping any values: 0 0 A) Is there a way for the calibration tool to detect this issue and invert the axis when required? B) Is there a way that the calibration continues without having to press ENTER, as that requires a keyboard and defeats the point of a touchscreen. Please tell me if any other information is required. [Bug 345627] Re: Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio
Daniel, While I don't dispute your observation that a hardware component is involved with the distorted audio, I think that we can all agree that src-linear is the lowest-common denominator in terms of audio quality, and an alternative should be chosen. Lennart recommends against using this resampler on the PA development list; see: https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio- discuss/2009-April/003490.html You say that some users don't notice src-linear resampler artifacts on certain hardware - I would counter that these users may not have testing with their PCM volume set above ~75% (IIRC, the PCM slider is set to around 75% in a stock install of Ubuntu), as the distortion won't kick in below this threshold. Also, some reporters may be confusing "distortion" (in terms of resampler artifacts) with stuttering (buffering problems, etc.). In my case, I suffered from distortion and stuttering with a stock Karmic Alpha 1 install ;). -- Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 378562] [NEW] Sync sbuild 0.58.3-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).
Public bug reported: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 affects ubuntu/sbuild status confirmed importance wishlist subscribe ubuntu-archive Please sync sbuild 0.58.3-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main). Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped: Upstream incorporated Ubuntu changes. Changelog since current karmic version 0.58.2-1ubuntu2: sbuild (0.58.3-1) unstable; urgency=low [ Roger Leigh ] * New release. * debian/control: - Update to Standards Version 3.8.1. - Add buildd package. - Add libsbuild-perl package. - All packages depend upon libsbuild-perl. * Add support for appending a tag to version numbers (Closes: #475777). Thanks to Timothy G Abbott for this patch. * When using the --help or --version options, don't abort if not in the sbuild group (Closes: #523670). Group membership is now only performed after options parsing, and only if required. * Allow config files to use $HOME (Closes: #524564). Thanks to James Vega for this patch. * Restore buildd package. * Split common library functions into new libsbuild-perl package. * debian/sbuild.(preinst|postinst|postrm): - Remove special cases for versions older than oldstable. Update addition and removal of sbuild group to use return value of getent rather than parsing getent output. - Use addgroup/delgroup in place of adduser/deluser. - Use --system when adding and deleting group, to ensure creation of a system group. Migrate existing non-system group and group members if the system group is not present. - Handle removal of 50sbuild setup script. * debian/buildd.(preinst|postinst|postrm): Add maintainer scripts for buildd package. Move configuration file from /etc/buildd.conf to /etc/buildd/buildd.conf if present. Also create buildd user and group for running the buildd daemon. * Sbuild::Conf: Don't default MAINTAINER_NAME to $DEBEMAIL if unset in the configuration file (Closes: #520158). * /etc/schroot/setup.d/50sbuild: Remove. The setup tasks performed by this script are now handled internally by sbuild. -- Roger Leigh Sun, 17 May 2009 15:52:53 +0100 -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v2.0.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Kees Cook iEYEARECAAYFAkoTkc8ACgkQH/9LqRcGPm2oVQCeKUK2STP1UNkjbPu/AJsfpD2l QkYAn1+OCNhCfk4jzagvgI0X7MPJJhqv =GCDz -END PGP SIGNATURE- ** Affects: sbuild (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist Status: Confirmed -- Sync sbuild 0.58.3-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378562 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 369138] Re: Xorg freezes on Voodoo3 at 1440x900
I can also confirm this bug on Ubuntu 9.04 on a PII-450 with a Voodoo 3. I can login to a normal X session, but scrolling an image causes a crash, and in general X is very unstable, with GDM crashing a lot. The workaround, as mentioned above, is to set: Option "NoAccel" "true" in the "Device" section of xorg.conf This has serious performance penalties in a 2d environment. Searching the net for this issue reveals the issue being discussed in 2006, around the time Ubuntu 6.04 was the newest release. It seems that some resolution was found and committed upstream after that. Note that no issues were noticed in Ubuntu 8.10 on the same machine. I do not understand the root cause of the problem, but this seems to be a regression. [Bug 213494] Re: Glipper dies when desktop starting
This bug is not a new one, and seems to be stalled as far as a fix, if it is a sufficient workaround (are there any cases where this doesn't workaround the problem?) It seems that usability would be key, and that workaround fixes it on several of my machines, I know that is slightly limited, but seems like a very viable workaround. It doesn't seem that collecting any further data is going to result in a solution that will come around any time soon, because as stated, this isn't new. Perhaps I missed the previous reasons, I did breeze through them, and mostly it is talk of using something different (parcelite klipper, etc.) those aren't even workarounds, they are abandonment. I believe that actually the times it didn't work are not related to the glipper startup crashing bug, but rather a memory limitation type bug. I too have crashed glipper in this way, however playing around with the settings has stopped that problem. I'm not a programmer, so it is only my observations and opinions take it for what it is worth. I think end userability ranks higher than attempting to milk a dry cow for more information. The majority of users (of which I venture to guess don't even visit this page) just delete it and install parcelite or klipper without a second thought. Don't take this as a reproach, it is just my opinion from one of the end users. [Bug 378554] [NEW] [G45] (UXA) openarena crashes after 1-20 min of play
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openarena [Problem] openarena freezes after several minutes of singleplayer gameplay. It rarely happens right at the start but most often after half a map or one and a half maps. The screen becomes completely unresponsive and the sound loops in a subsecond loop but background processes keep working and openarena doesn't use excessive cpu. It happens in full screen and windowed mode. During play graphics are flawless. [Discussion] Switching to other tty's doesn't show any change on the screen but it is possible to ssh into the box and use top or kill processes. It just doesn't show any change on screen. When starting openarena from a terminal window, it will only show bot chat but no error messages get displayed during crash. "sudo reboot" initiates reboot with a system beep (but no screen change) and ssh gets disconnected after some hdd activity, but shutdown doesn't finish. Alt+Print+[REISUB] works to reboot the machine. After Alt+Print+R the game texture colors become partly inverted and after Alt+Print+B the screen finally goes blank. This crash has occured on this machine on several seperate installations since (myth/K/u)buntu 8.10 x86_64 and hasn't changed with any update to (-> ubuntu 9.04 -> ubuntu 9.04 + x-swat ppa -> ubuntu 9.04 + x-swat ppa + intel 2:2.7.99.1-1 from debian experimental reps) (-> mythbuntu 9.10 alpha1 -> mythbuntu 9.10 alpha1 + xorg-edgers ppa) (-> Kubuntu 9.04). [Bug 378553] [NEW] ~/.Xmodmap special key bindings aren't working in GNOME
Public bug reported: Before Ubuntu Jaunty, due to strange keyboard design, I used custom keycode bindings for Power, Sleep and Wake buttons to control my media player. But after upgrade I cannot apply custom ~/.Xmodmap anymore. I have made some investigation, and I have found, that if I run X server without Gnome, xev gives correct results. But if GNOME is running, only bindings for non-special keys are working. Here is an example: $ cat ~/.Xmodmap keycode 124 = XF86AudioPrev keycode 150 = XF86AudioPlay keycode 151 = XF86AudioNext keycode 49 = XF86AudioPrev The last keycode is added for testing purposes, and, if I press tilde key, I get the following output from xev: KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x421, root 0x13c, subw 0x0, time 21799, (463,-217), root:(470,598), state 0x0, keycode 49 (keysym 0x1008ff16, XF86AudioPrev), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x421, root 0x13c, subw 0x0, time 217000156, (463,-217), root:(470,598), state 0x0, keycode 49 (keysym 0x1008ff16, XF86AudioPrev), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False But if I press 'Power' button (keycode 124) I get FocusOut event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x421, mode NotifyGrab, detail NotifyAncestor FocusOut event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x421, mode NotifyWhileGrabbed, detail NotifyNonlinear PropertyNotify event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x421, atom 0x16e (_NET_WM_ICON_GEOMETRY), time 217086342, state PropertyNewValue and gnome power manager window pops up. That means, that the first line of ~/.Xmodmap was ignored. If I run xev in the separate X server without GNOME, I have expected behavior: XF86AudioPrev keysym is generated. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ~/.Xmodmap special key bindings aren't working in GNOME https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378553 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 378551] [NEW] vlc crashes in avcodec_decode_audio2
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vlc Jaunty, vlc 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1, libavcodec-unstripped-52: 3:0.svn20090303-1ubuntu2+unstripped1 I have a m4v file that plays fine in ffplay and used to play in vlc before I upgraded intrepid->jaunty. (It plays without sound in mplayer; the codec is 0x332D6361 / ffmpeg ac3 it seems. *shrug*) Now in Jaunty it consistently crashes. I've tried to debug the crash a little, and at least got it before it destroyed its stack: #0 0xaf152c10 in avcodec_decode_audio2 () from /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libavcodec.so.52 #1 0xaf8dbba1 in DecodeAudio (p_dec=0xa0e9e9c, pp_block=0xae60c298) at audio.c:315 #2 0xb7eb9051 in DecoderDecodeAudio (p_dec=0xa0e9e9c, p_block=0xa16dae0) at input/decoder.c:629 #3 0xb7eba8f5 in DecoderDecode (p_dec=0xa0e9e9c, p_block=0xae60d008) at input/decoder.c:1006 #4 0xb7ebb2e1 in DecoderThread (p_this=0xa0e9e9c) at input/decoder.c:594 #5 0xb7f12e79 in thread_entry (data=0x9edb318) at misc/threads.c:465 #6 0xb7e714ff in start_thread () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libpthread.so.0 #7 0xb7dec49e in clone () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 It SEGV's while storing parameters for the avctx->codec->decode call, at one of these instructions (intuition says it should be the `call`, but it crashes when I nexti in gdb when the eip is on the mov; maybe I just misunderstand gdb): 0xaf0baccc : mov%ebx,(%esp) 0xaf0baccf : call *0x1c(%edi) Here's the avctx->codec structure, i.e., `p *p_sys->p_context->codec` in DecodeAudio: {name = 0xaf4bbe9d "ac3", type = CODEC_TYPE_AUDIO, id = CODEC_ID_AC3, priv_data_size = 88656, init = 0xaf164fef, encode = 0, close = 0xaf164fb3, decode = 0xaf1618a0, capabilities = 0, next = 0xaf558360, flush = 0, supported_framerates = 0x0, pix_fmts = 0x0, long_name = 0xaf4bbe8a "ATSC A/52A (AC-3)", supported_samplerates = 0x0, sample_fmts = 0x0, channel_layouts = 0x0} That looks pretty similar to (but is not the same memory location as) ac3_decoder in ac3dec.c. @Nick: Thanks for the response, it is really helpful. Please try the following: $ lshal -m > lshal.log.txt and attach lshal.log.txt to the bug report. This may be a problem with HAL/pm-utils. Since dbus-monitor could not determine that the AC power was unplugged/plugged in, I added pm-utils to the bug report. ** Also affects: pm-utils (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager gnome-power-manager doesn't correctly detect the power state on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6500t). When I pull the AC plug out it detects that it was unplugged because the battery icon shows up in the notification area. However when I hover over the icon it still says that it's running on AC power. This makes the "on battery" power management settings invalid since it still thinks it's running on AC. i.e. the screen doesn't dim, the screen doesn't turn off after 15 minutes as specified for "On battery power" etc. Steps to reproduce 1. Unplug AC power cord 2. Wait for battery icon to appear in the notification area 3. Hover over the icon with the mouse and notice it says that it's running on AC when it's clearly running on battery 4. Notice that none of the "on battery power" preferences take effect since it still thinks it's on AC power What should happen Batter icon should appear and indicate that it is running on battery power and "on battery power" preferences should be in effect.
