I've similarly applied the new BIOS and it works perfectly.
Thanks to HP for recognising the bug, and to Paul for helping to push
this forward :)

Chris : Did not try the PDF export, will try soon :-)
Pascal : dpkg-reconfigure worked. So paper size is a global setting in
Ubuntu/gnome and can not be overridden?? Sounds very rigid and impractical. Off
topic : It did not change default paper size in Firefox...

I installed the F.16 bios into my dv5-1140el. Things works better now,
but not flawlessy.
-The resume takes long and an error message about my dvb-t card unable to find
the firmware shows. Some errors about bluetooth show also.
-I hear annoying and loud clicks coming from the speakers everytime

I have the same issue with new kernel (28). Some time ago it loaded fine
with the older kernel (27) but now it doesn't load at all.
I found some solution on Ubuntu Forums but I haven't tried it yet:

Hope it will be helpful.

Is there any chance of a backport to Intrepid?
IMHO a backport to Hardy should also be considered
because this bug is problematic in networking environments.
Lets say in environments where LTS versions are preferred.

There is no bug here. The solution seems simple to me:
Both e-mike and i-mike are muted in Ubuntu 9.04 by default:
Click on the loudspeaker icon near the clock, choose volume control and see
if the mikes are muted (little red cross over them). Click on the crossed mikes
and they will work.
