[Bug 390556] [NEW] openssh-server dos regression in jaunty (oom_adj)

2009-06-22 Thread ksuehring
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssh-server

All child processes of openssh-server inherit the oom_adj value of -17
which makes the unkillable in low memory situation. Any user logged into
the machine via ssh can cause a kernel-panic by creating a process that
simply consumes memory.

I have reported this before for Hardy (Bug #293000). Upstream Debian
fixes were shipped in Intrepid, Jaunty has the problem again.

Please fix openssh to degrade child processes to a higher oom_adj value.

[Bug 390579] [NEW] Enable UDP support (-DLDAP_CONNECTIONLESS) for Likewise-Open

2009-06-22 Thread Thierry Carrez
Public bug reported:

Our OpenLDAP is compiled (as is the default) without client support for
CLDAP (connection-less LDAP, over UDP). This is primarily due to CLDAP
never making it into a standard, as evidenced by its proposed move to
historical status as RFC3352.

However, CLDAP is used by Active Directory, and Likewise-Open requires
its (client) openldap library to support CLDAP in order to talk with
Active Directory. This makes Likewise-Open 5 compile and bundle its own
OpenLDAP library for the sole purpose of getting CLDAP client support
built-in.

As Likewise-Open 5 is scheduled to move to main on this cycle, it makes
sense to try to avoid shipping a private OpenLDAP library with it.
Outcome of the discussion at UDS with Howard Chu was that enabling
-DLDAP_CONNECTIONLESS should not have adverse performance or stability
consequences.

[Bug 201786] Re: ssh Agent admitted failure to sign using the key on big endian machines

2009-06-22 Thread Cédric Jeanneret
Hi again,

Searching some informations on seahorse' ssh-agent, I found this thing:

/!\ Note: This only applies to versions of Seahorse prior to 2.22.
In 2.22 and later a full SSH agent is included in gnome-keyring and the
agent proxy in Seahorse has been retired.

maybe there are some problems with versions of those programmes in
ubuntu?

See source:

[Bug 382117] Re: Renaming a file through Samba overwrites existing one

2009-06-22 Thread Brice Terzaghi
It is fully reproductible with the steps I've descriped above.

I mount the share from the Shortcuts menu (not sure of the english
name : it's the GNOME menu with shortcuts to usual places, recent
documents, etc. between Applications and System ; it's called
Raccourcis in french, maybe it's called Places in english). I use
connect to server then choose Windows share, set the host name, user
name and the Samba share appears on the desktop. I then browse through
it with Nautilus.

The server runs Ubuntu too, Samba shares have been set on it remotely
via Webmin (I'm not connecting to a Windows system).

How can I check if the problem exists without Nautilus ? Are there
commands I can type in a terminal to connect to a Samba share and manage
files on it ?

You can run the following commands from a terminal:

To test:

 1. install the samba-client package
 2. try to connect to the remote system from the command line:

smbclient //remote_system/share_name

If the share requires a specific username/password, try using the -U
parameter (for example, use -U ntdomain\\user).

# This boolean parameter controls whether Samba attempts to sync the Unix

According to the mysqld apparmor profile, /home/mysql is not included.
However datadir is set to /home/mysql in datadir.cnf. You need to update
mysqld apparmor profile to allow access to /home/mysql/.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingApparmor for more information on
debugging an AppArmor related issue.

is no EOF they block. This is an inherent danger in reading from a FIFO.

[Bug 277556] Re: should build kernel modules with dkms

2009-06-22 Thread Craig
I just installed open-vm-dkms_2009.06.18-172495-0~ppa1_all.deb on a
server. The vmware server said that the tools were not running, so I
checked ps, and sure enough, vmtoolsd was not running.

I ran strace vmtoolsd and this is the end of the output:
stat64(/etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=0, ...})
= 0
open(/etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 4
fstat64(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
close(4)= 0
time(NULL) = 1245705534
pipe([4, 5])= 0
fcntl64(4, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
fcntl64(5, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
rt_sigaction(SIGSEGV, {0xb8084900, [SEGV], 0}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
rt_sigaction(SIGSEGV, {SIG_DFL}, NULL, 8) = 0
gettimeofday({1245705534, 60827}, NULL) = 0
stat64(/usr/lib/open-vm-tools/vmsvc, 0xbfec85dc) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
exit_group(1) = ?

vmtoolsd is looking for /usr/lib/open-vm-tools/vmsvc, but the actual
path is /usr/lib/open-vm-tools/plugins/vmsvc

[Bug 388483] Re: The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action, was called for PID 30992 (/usr/sbin/smbd)

2009-06-22 Thread Harald
Thierry,

I have a similar problem. I get mails like:
The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,
was called for PID 6695 ().
This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault.
However, the executable could not be found for process 6695.
It may have died unexpectedly, or you may not have permission to debug
the process.

I get the mails while file transfers from an XP-Box to the Samba server occur.
I don't use the cups server to print from the XP-Box.

I have also problems to connect with a Ubuntu Remix Netbook, it cannot
connect to the Samba server and it cannot see the share.

Here is the info you requested from Armin:

[Bug 277556] Re: should build kernel modules with dkms

2009-06-22 Thread Marcelo Vanzin
Hi Craig,

The vmtoolsd issue is a problem in the vmtoolsd source, not the package
(although symlinking can help in the meantime as you've noticed). I'll
fix it in the Tools source.

[Bug 277556] Re: should build kernel modules with dkms

2009-06-22 Thread Craig
Thanks, Marcelo!

I believe I have found another problem. vmtoolsd does not work if the
--background option is specified.

# vmtoolsd -l --background /var/run/vmtoolsd.pid
[Jun 22 18:14:42.984: ] [ warning] [vmtools] Hostinfo_Daemonize: Child could
not exec /home/candrews/vmtoolsd, read 4, error 2.

It appears vmtoolsd is looking for itself in the cwd, instead of where
it is actually located.

Thanks for letting us know. In the meantime, you can work around that by
using the absolute path to execute vmtoolsd with the --background option
(e.g. /usr/bin/vmtoolsd --background ...).

[Bug 277556] Re: should build kernel modules with dkms

2009-06-22 Thread Craig
You are remarkable - the addition of Jaunty packages to the PPA makes my
life a whole lot easier. I just installed the new packages on one of the
Jaunty servers I use, and it worked great. vmtoolsd started right up,
and seems to work without a hassle.

Looking through the package changelog, these appear to be the Ubuntu developer
contacts you may have the best luck with:
Devid Antonio Filoni d.fil...@ubuntu.com
Dan Sheridan d...@adelard.com

The ideal approach would be to get your patches in Debian. The debian
maintainer for open-vm-tools is: Daniel Baumann dan...@debian.org

There is a bug in debian requesting DKMS support at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=516251

Also, the #ubuntu-dev channel on freenode may be able to help you find a
sponsor.

[Bug 360319] Re: [GM45] memory leak causes system to run out of memory (UXA/EXA)

2009-06-22 Thread Wladimir Mutel
I am testing the current Karmic, with package versions :
xserver-xorg-video-intel2:2.7.99.1+git20090602.ec2fde7c-0ubuntu2
xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu21
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.6.1.901-2ubuntu1

and KDE packages version, mostly, 4.2.90, as they are in Karmic
currently. No GNOME apps except nm-applet. GTK apps : Pidgin and
Seamonkey. xrestop shows that top X resources are used by Okular, about
136 MB.

I have 2GB RAM but my X server VSZ inflates up to 2 GB very soon after
the reboot (during the first day of uptime) and starts to push
everything else to the swap.

Hope to get an update from Karmic fixing that. Soon. Subscribing for
this bug now.

[Bug 390527] [NEW] Cannot assign Ctrl-Alt-T to Run a terminal

2009-06-22 Thread Koterpillar
Public bug reported:

I want Ctrl-Alt-T to be a hotkey for Run a terminal in Gnome. Choosing Key
combinations from Preferences, I can set it, but pressing it does nothing.
However, if I create a new command in that window, with terminator as run
string, it works. If I assign the XF86Reload key to Run a terminal,
Terminator opens too (it is set as default terminal emulator in Preferred
Applications.
Some more investigating: Ctrl-T works fine. Ctrl-Alt-W, Ctrl-Alt-U, Ctrl-Alt-S
all work fine.

[Bug 389485] Re: DONT work h323 by niif hungary

2009-06-22 Thread Yannick Defais
It seems Ekiga try to register using the SIP protocol. You should use
H323 instead;

Remove the entry for fz-gd.vidkonf.niif.hu:
go to Edit-Accounts , right click on the account and remove it.

Create an H.323 account:
go to Edit-Accounts-Accounts (the top menu in the new window) - Add an H.323
account

Best regards,
Yannick

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-22 Thread mabawsa
This is an important bug as it basically stops FTP functionality in Ubuntu!
Anyway, here are the compile options I used to get FTP working:
sudo apt-get build-dep gvfs
apt-get source gvfs
tar -xzvf gvfs_1.2.2.orig.tar.gz
rm gvfs_1.2.2.orig.tar.gz
rm gvfs_1.2.2-0ubuntu2*
sed 's/ftp_connection_send (conn, 0, OPTS UTF8 ON);/ftp_connection_send
(conn, RESPONSE_PASS_500, OPTS UTF8 ON);/' gvfs-1.2.2/daemon/gvfsbackendftp.c
 /tmp/gvfsbackendftp.c
mv /tmp/gvfsbackendftp.c gvfs-1.2.2/daemon/gvfsbackendftp.c
cd gvfs-1.2.2/
./configure
make
sudo make install

I want to put this on a ppa so I tried pbuilder
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PbuilderHowto.
However it all got a bit greasy so if anybody can point me to a tutorial on how
to create these multiple debs from one source I will try again.

For now I have FTP capabilities again in Jaunty.

I've been trying to find a way to allow the mouse to be released from a

this feature could let me do this easily, but then I find that the

[Bug 390531] [NEW] Default User Is Not Added to the Admin Group During Install

2009-06-22 Thread Scott Shields
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

After installing Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Alpha 2 from the Alternative
CD, I noticed that my FUSA said Users instead of my full name. I
figured it was a bug and shrugged it off. I then tried to install
PackageKit seeing that gnome-app-install was missing from my
Applications menu. I received a warning that sshields is not in the
sudoers file. This incident will be reported. From my Linode
experience, I knew that my sudoers file wasn't configured. I rebooted,
dropped into the root shell, and added %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL to
/etc/sudoers. Then I added my user to the admin group by adduser
sshields admin. Rebooted and it worked. The FUSA bug disappeared and
gnome-app-install was under my Applications menu.

[Bug 387297] Re: manage-credentials should not ask for Launchpad password directly

2009-06-22 Thread Stephan Hermann
Good morning,

I would like to give my input about the problems with the web browser
oriented Sign into Launchpad approach for UI clients.

Actually, I don't think there is a difference between trusting a webbrowser and
an UI client. As for leonov, we don't save any passwords somewhere in the
code...this is something we need to avoid.
Yes, the password is clear-text in saved in a variable, but only as long as we
need it to authenticate to launchpad. Then it's the developers task to remove
those bits.

Anyhow, the problem we are approaching is, using the browser or the ui
client, that you need to trust your network infrastructure, so that it
really connects to launchpad and not to e.g. vi /etc/hosts some
internal ip launchpad.net or any other dns forgery.

The only way to do that, is to have openID, and to have a possibility to
answer yes, it's me who wants to sign into launchpad.

The approach with username + password is bad, but having no other chance
to avoid a browser for ui clients, I think our leonov workaround is the
best thing someone can do.

Regards,

\sh

[Bug 387297] Re: manage-credentials should not ask for Launchpad password directly

2009-06-22 Thread Stephan Hermann
Good Morning again,

after thinking about this problem, it would be a good idea, to have a
web widget alike. If you think that a webbrowser is the only trusted
client app, you could add a simple non cssed html page fragment with
an LP auth form, which could be included in any UI client code (e.g. via
qt/gtk-webkit widget), or try the openid approach.

Regards,

\sh

ADBLOCK PLUS 1.0.2

Using FIREFOX : TOOLS : ADD-ONS : SEARCH BOX : ADBLOCK PLUS ; the search
responds Firefox couldn't retrieve add-ons. Searching on ADBLOCK yields
the same result, but searching on BLOCK provides results. I checked the bug
list and did not notice this issue.

By searching on BLOCK, I can install and have no problems. I can use
the BROWSE ALL ADD-ONS that takes me to addons.mozilla.org and have no
problems installing from there either.

This is only an issue because I am doing a special screen-recording for
a specific site and this prevents me from demonstrating the shortest
method.

[Bug 390357] Re: thunderbird-locale-en-gb is on LiveCD but thunderbird isn't

2009-06-22 Thread Martin Pitt
It is currently behaving as intended, this gets pulled in through
language-support-en. It's not a cdimage problem either way.

This might get improved with the reshuffling of language-support-translations-*

[Bug 330573] Re: madfuload doesn't work on Jaunty

2009-06-22 Thread oudalrich
The very first line returned by the first test led to the solution: I
had an old 42-madfuload.rules in /etc/udev/rules.d that overrode the new
one in /lib/udev/rules.d. Deleted it, now it works! Sorry for wasting
your time by being so stupid.

There is a slight problem remaining, however. The Transit works only
once, if I want to use it again after unplugging it I have to reboot:

1. Boot system
2. Plug in Transit: works
3. Unplug Transit
4. Plug in Transit (no matter which USB port): does not work
5. Reboot system
6. Plug in Transit: works

[Bug 390304] Re: external usb disk drives are mounted under their UUID's

2009-06-22 Thread Martin Pitt
Actually, I used to have this problem in Karmic, but I cannot reproduce
it any more.

Your dk-disks dump shows that your device does not actually have a label
(or that dk-disks fails to detect it). When you plugged in such a device
in question, can you please also attach /var/log/kern.log, and give me
the output of

  sudo blkid /dev/sd*

?

[Bug 386740] Re: [K8M800] mouse pointer corruptly displayed at the bottom of the X screen

2009-06-22 Thread Márton Németh
Do you mean:
pScrn-currentMode-HDisplay
pScrn-currentMode-VDisplay
pScrn-virtualX
pScrn-virtualY
?

I created a debug patch (attached) to print out these variables. When I
use the original xorg.conf file the variables show a resolution of
1600x1200.

(II) CHROME(0): via_cursor.c:330: pScrn-currentMode-HDisplay=1600
(II) CHROME(0): via_cursor.c:332: pScrn-currentMode-VDisplay=1200
(II) CHROME(0): via_cursor.c:334: pScrn-virtualX=1600
(II) CHROME(0): via_cursor.c:336: pScrn-virtualY=1200

My native panel resolution is 1024x768. When I use the Virtual 1024
768 then the screen is no longer cropped and the mouse pointer is
displayed also correctly as I mentioned in comment #11 (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
openchrome/+bug/386740/comments/11 ).

Applying the patch
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27411446/panel_pm800_new2.patch results a
complete system freeze on Clevo D410J when I execute /etc/init.d/gdm
restart from the console. Different colored pixels appear on the screen
when the system is freezed (the Caps Lock is not working).
