[Bug 422518] [NEW] rt2500pci wifi driver and slow SSH connection
Public bug reported: IBM Thinkpad T23 with Comtrend PCMCIA wifi adapter. Wifi adapter purchased from Linux Emporium (Solihull, UK) and certified as Linux compatible, which so far is correct. Wifi adapter immediately recognised by Laptop and immediately connects to wifi DHCP router. Package installation via Synaptic and Update Manager very quick. Likewise web surfing very quick. The card is reported in lspci as follows: 03:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01) iwconfig reports: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:BTHomeHub-E2AF Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:14:7F:9B:F3:F7 Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=18 dBm Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B Power Management:off Link Quality=73/100 Signal level:-40 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 Network ManagerConnection Information reports: Auto BTHomeHub-E2AF (default) Interface: 802.11 Wifi (wlan0) Hardware Address: 00:0F:EA:ED:D3:64 Driver: rt2500pci Speed: 1Mb/s Security: WEP IP Address: 192.168.67 Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.255 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Route: 192.168.1.254 Primary DNS: 192.168.1.254 Problem:- Connection via openssh either as client or server machine is very slow. Transfer of files lasts for about 10 seconds at 500kb/s but then rapidly slows to 60kb/s resulting in anticipated file transfer of 1.2GB of data to take 19 hours. Left laptop overnight but in the morning the transfer across SSH had failed. Tried the laptop connected to 2 different Ubu machines. One running 8.04 and connected to router via ethernet cable. The other wifi connected running 9.04. The laptop has the same deceleration issue regardless of which machine it's trying to SSH with. The other machines in the network (both Ubu) transfer at 4MB/s across SSH with each other. One has an internal Belkin PCI wifi card (purchased from same vendor). The other is connected via ethernet cable. Transfer rates between these two other machines are fast and constant. The issue appears to be the laptop and I would guess the wifi driver having a problem with SSH. To test the laptop I've removed the wifi card and connected an ethernet cable. With this configuration SSH speeds of constant 3.8MB/s achieved and files successfully transferred. I can only conclude that the wifi driver is somehow losing packets resulting in the rapid deceleration and then settling to the very slow 60Kb/s transfer speed? To double check the above issue I have done a complete fresh install of 9.04 onto the laptop and installed all the updates via Update Manager. The SSH transfer issue is repeated. [Bug 406303] Re: Compiled zip support in PHP 5.2.4 64bit can't open archives with large number of files.
For what's it worth, here's an indirect confirmation for this bug for Hardy. I'm using SysCP and had problems with APS files (which would be reported as this is not an APS file). http://wiki.syscp.org/docs/aps-handbook says under PHP configuration issues has this to say: Users of a 64bit system with PHP 5.2 must enable the PHP exec function in their configuration for the SysCP vHost. That's because in the 64bit version of PHP 5.2 exists a bug, which makes it impossible to open Zip files including more than 509 files. For that reason a fallback has been implemented which relies on the exec function of PHP. The files will be extracted in the temporary directory using unzip. So exec mustn't be in disabled_functions if you use a 64bit system! Applying the described fixes indeed made all the this is not an APS file messages go away. This is fully consistent with the existence of the bug in Hardy. (Seeing the zip_open bug was first reported for PHP 5.1.something, this is less than surprising IMHO.) I'd like to see this make its way within the next week because a long-scheduled hardware upgrade to a 64-bit machine will be effective then, and we may be unable to apply security fixes for PHP software if they are distributed as zip archives with more than 509 files in the root directory, and no workaround. Not a large chance of happening, particularly since we're going to upgrade to Karmic ASAP, but if it does happen, we're screwed... -- Compiled zip support in PHP 5.2.4 64bit can't open archives with large number of files. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/406303 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to php5 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 422177] [NEW] nut init isn't functional at all
2009/8/31 ilna Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nut Up to date Kubuntu Karmic is in use. Recently I have tried to install nut and faced with these problems: 1. hal starts 'hald-addon-hid-ups' process which is not compatible with nut. To prevent the starting I have added the file: this is not needed. the call to detach the kernel driver will eject the hal addon 2. I have added nut and ups-monitor services to default runlevels, but nothing starts. To force nut be usable I manually start it via: $ sudo upsdrvctl start $ sudo upsd read /usr/share/doc/nut/README.Debian.gz you will see that you have forgotten to edit /etc/nut/nut.conf - MODE I've modified the init script to use this, and will push other distros in this way too. Only at this point KNutClient is able to connect the service. just a matter of time. I'll wait for your ack to close the bug. FYI, I'm working (will be working) on the NUT Control Center (probably not the definitive name), which will be a complete config / client UI. [Bug 422422] [NEW] nvidia-settings puts primary screen on wrong monitor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nvidia-settings When I connect my Dell XPS M1530 to an external monitor using the VGA port and run nvidia-settings to set it up to be to the right of the laptop screen, it does not matter which screen I set to be the primary screen - nvidia-settings forces the external monitor to be the primary screen (ie gnome-panel appears on this screen). (The relative positioning of the screens is correct, however.) The workaround is to cancel the change and then reapply it - the second time it sets the laptop screen to primary. This happens with the nvidia driver version 185.18.31 and .36 and also the latest beta driver 190.25 in Jaunty (with kernels 2.6.28, 2.6.30, and 2.6.31). [Bug 422429] [NEW] apt-get lacks localinstall feature
Public bug reported: Hello, I need the feature similar to localinstall from yum for apt-get or aptitude (or...): A locally downloaded package have to be installed from within the commandline. Dependencies should be automatically be downloaded from online repos (if available). As a workaround I've found dpkg -i package.deb; apt-get -f install. This does not work (at least for me) with packages which contains Pre- Depends. There should be an easy way like apt-get localinstall package.deb. It should be a regular option and nothing to fix (-f) for apt-get. [Bug 420837] Re: computer-janitor only deletes old linux headers. Not modules/image.
I have recently changed Computer Janitor so that it is rather more careful about what to suggest for removal. The problem was that it was considering all common third-party packages as uninteresting to the user, which caused a lot of people to accidentally remove stuff they care about. The fix for that unfortunately also means the janitor now doesn't think old kernels should be removed. Perhaps in karmic+1 we can finally fix things properly so that useless kernels go away, but third-party stuff stays. For now, I am satisfied with the current compromise: it doesn't clean up everything, but it does not clean up too much, either. ** Changed in: computer-janitor (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist ** Changed in: computer-janitor (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged -- computer-janitor only deletes old linux headers. If you can, run it from the command line, and attach the output to the terminal as well. ** Summary changed: - computer janitor window is always empty + computer janitor cleanup button sensitive when there's nothing to clean up ** Changed in: computer-janitor (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Triaged ** Changed in: computer-janitor (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low -- computer janitor cleanup button sensitive when there's nothing to clean up https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418319 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 157187] Re: ability to specify PDF metadata in print dialog
It seems that the CUPS-PDF backend uses ghostscript as the 'real' backend, and ghostscript (as far as I can tell) currently doesn't offer any way of setting the metadata. If it did (or will at some point), then I believe an interface to set this metadata could be added to the CUPS-PDF backend. But as it stands, this is not possible -- does that sound correct? I tried a simple test, editing a file in OpenOffice, changing various properties in the file menu, and then printing via CUPS-PDF. But, none of the changed properties were visible in the produced PDF. Of course each program can provide its own means of generating PDF files (in OpenOffice, that would be using File-Export as PDF), but it is unreasonable to assume that all programs which can print must/should also provide a means of generating their own PDF files. This is where having customizable PDF metadata on the CUPS-backend level makes sense. -- ability to specify PDF metadata in print dialog https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
