Thanks for that - you reminded me of an easier method

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

add the line

blacklist rt2800usb

save reboot

[Bug 422518] [NEW] rt2500pci wifi driver and slow SSH connection

2009-09-01 Thread Mark Bennett
Public bug reported:

IBM Thinkpad T23 with Comtrend PCMCIA wifi adapter. Wifi adapter
purchased from Linux Emporium (Solihull, UK) and certified as Linux
compatible, which so far is correct. Wifi adapter immediately recognised
by Laptop and immediately connects to wifi DHCP router. Package
installation via Synaptic and Update Manager very quick. Likewise web
surfing very quick. The card is reported in lspci as follows:

03:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev
01)

iwconfig reports:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:BTHomeHub-E2AF

  Link Quality=73/100 Signal level:-40 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Network ManagerConnection Information reports:

Auto BTHomeHub-E2AF (default)
Interface: 802.11 Wifi (wlan0)
Hardware Address: 00:0F:EA:ED:D3:64
Driver: rt2500pci

Security: WEP

Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.255
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Route: 192.168.1.254
Primary DNS: 192.168.1.254

Problem:- Connection via openssh either as client or server machine is
very slow. Transfer of files lasts for about 10 seconds at 500kb/s but
then rapidly slows to 60kb/s resulting in anticipated file transfer of
1.2GB of data to take 19 hours. Left laptop overnight but in the morning
the transfer across SSH had failed. Tried the laptop connected to 2
different Ubu machines. One running 8.04 and connected to router via
ethernet cable. The other wifi connected running 9.04. The laptop has
the same deceleration issue regardless of which machine it's trying to
SSH with. The other machines in the network (both Ubu) transfer at 4MB/s
across SSH with each other. One has an internal Belkin PCI wifi card
(purchased from same vendor). The other is connected via ethernet cable.
Transfer rates between these two other machines are fast and constant.
The issue appears to be the laptop and I would guess the wifi driver
having a problem with SSH. To test the laptop I've removed the wifi card
and connected an ethernet cable. With this configuration SSH speeds of
constant 3.8MB/s achieved and files successfully transferred. I can only
conclude that the wifi driver is somehow losing packets resulting in the
rapid deceleration and then settling to the very slow 60Kb/s transfer
speed?

To double check the above issue I have done a complete fresh install of
9.04 onto the laptop and installed all the updates via Update Manager.
The SSH transfer issue is repeated.

[Bug 406303] Re: Compiled zip support in PHP 5.2.4 64bit can't open archives with large number of files.

2009-09-01 Thread Joachim Durchholz
For what's it worth, here's an indirect confirmation for this bug for
Hardy.

I'm using SysCP and had problems with APS files (which would be reported
as this is not an APS file).

http://wiki.syscp.org/docs/aps-handbook says under PHP configuration issues
has this to say:
Users of a 64bit system with PHP 5.2 must enable the PHP exec function in
their configuration for the SysCP vHost. That's because in the 64bit version of
PHP 5.2 exists a bug, which makes it impossible to open Zip files including
more than 509 files. For that reason a fallback has been implemented which
relies on the exec function of PHP. The files will be extracted in the
temporary directory using unzip. So exec mustn't be in disabled_functions if
you use a 64bit system!

Applying the described fixes indeed made all the this is not an APS file
messages go away.
This is fully consistent with the existence of the bug in Hardy. (Seeing the
zip_open bug was first reported for PHP 5.1.something, this is less than
surprising IMHO.)

I'd like to see this make its way within the next week because a long-scheduled
hardware upgrade to a 64-bit machine will be effective then, and we may be
unable to apply security fixes for PHP software if they are distributed as zip
archives with more than 509 files in the root directory, and no workaround.
Not a large chance of happening, particularly since we're going to upgrade to
Karmic ASAP, but if it does happen, we're screwed...

Re: [Bug 422177] [NEW] nut init isn't functional at all

2009-09-01 Thread Arnaud Quette
2009/8/31 ilna

 Public bug reported:

 Binary package hint: nut

Up to date Kubuntu Karmic is in use.

Recently I have tried to install nut and faced with these problems:

 1. hal starts 'hald-addon-hid-ups' process which is not compatible with
nut. To prevent the starting I have added the file:

this is not needed. the call to detach the kernel driver will eject the hal
addon

 2. I have added nut and ups-monitor services to default runlevels, but
nothing starts. To force nut be usable I manually start it via:

 $ sudo upsdrvctl start
 $ sudo upsd

read /usr/share/doc/nut/README.Debian.gz
you will see that you have forgotten to edit /etc/nut/nut.conf - MODE
I've modified the init script to use this, and will push other distros in
this way too.

Only at this point KNutClient is able to connect the service.

just a matter of time.

I'll wait for your ack to close the bug.

FYI, I'm working (will be working) on the NUT Control Center (probably not
the definitive name), which will be a complete config / client UI.

[Bug 422177] Re: nut init isn't functional at all

2009-09-01 Thread ilna
Arnaud,

You are right - it's my fault. The thing is I *have* configured
'standalone' mode at first, but, probably, during digging in the issue I
have removed (purge?) the package, reinstalled it later and forgot to
edit this config file again. Have terminated all ups-related processes,
restarted nut - all works fine.

So, the only issue (for following users) is to prevent hal-started
process.

As far as the issue doesn't affect me any more, it may be closed.

NUT Control Center? Great! Good luck! Hope, it will be KDE-Kompatible
wrt systray.

Thanks!

[Bug 422422] [NEW] nvidia-settings puts primary screen on wrong monitor

2009-09-01 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

When I connect my Dell XPS M1530 to an external monitor using the VGA
port and run nvidia-settings to set it up to be to the right of the
laptop screen, it does not matter which screen I set to be the primary
screen - nvidia-settings forces the external monitor to be the primary
screen (ie gnome-panel appears on this screen). (The relative
positioning of the screens is correct, however.)

The workaround is to cancel the change and then reapply it - the second
time it sets the laptop screen to primary.

This happens with the nvidia driver version 185.18.31 and .36 and also
the latest beta driver 190.25 in Jaunty (with kernels 2.6.28, 2.6.30,
and 2.6.31).

It does work correctly if I connect to a monitor using the HDMI port.

Status in “tsclient” package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
Hi - I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Terminal Server Client to remote desktop into
 my Windows XP Machine.

The problem is that I cannot copy data back and forth between my local
session (ie a browswer or open office on my Ubuntu Machine) to my
applications that I am running on the remote desktop.

Sometimes copy/paste works - but its intermitant and I can't seem to see a
 pattern.

I need to have copy / paste working both ways - more for data - and not
 necessarily for complete files.

 Any help appreciated.

 Thx

 Hassan

[Bug 422429] [NEW] apt-get lacks localinstall feature

2009-09-01 Thread Dominik
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I need the feature similar to localinstall from yum for apt-get or
aptitude (or...):

A locally downloaded package have to be installed from within the
commandline. Dependencies should be automatically be downloaded from
online repos (if available).

As a workaround I've found dpkg -i package.deb; apt-get -f install.
This does not work (at least for me) with packages which contains Pre-
Depends.

There should be an easy way like apt-get localinstall package.deb. It
should be a regular option and nothing to fix (-f) for apt-get.

Kind Regards,
Dominik

[Bug 378827] Re: Nvidia driver not dkms install in karmic with kernel 2.6.30-5

2009-09-01 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
I see two possible courses of action:

1. Stick with nvidia's old .16, but apply the patches from 398893.
2. Bump to .20.

Both fix compilation and compatibility with kernel 2.6.31; both work for
me. This has been broken for some time, and should be fixed before the
release.

You'll need to install the sl-modem-source package if you want a
/dev/ttySL0 device node. The package is also available on the PPA.

Please change this to: SLMODEMD_DEVICE=slamr0

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-geode” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
Hi, just installed 8.04 Xubuntu -- running Xfce -- my machine is a
DECTOP -- it supports screen resolutions up to 1600x1200 -- I am
using a 1280x1024 screen, but the install was not able to discern
that higher than 800x600 was available and is using the default in
the display preferences and doesnt give me any higher resolutions I
can pick. Tried changing xorg.conf -- no luck, also tried menu.lst
(ok during boot) switches back to 800x600 when the splash screen
 comes up.

I had previously installed 6.06 LTS from the ALT disk and it worked
 just fine at 1280x1024.

[Bug 397096] Re: ata exception and hang when booting

2009-09-01 Thread Tormod Volden
qwerty, thanks for the hint. However I have a PATA disk, and it gets
stuck during boot which should not be write-heavy...

I have now inserted sleep 7 before and after launching gdm, and it
helps. If it gets stuck now, it is a bit earlier, during module loading,
typically the last message I see is about synaptics touchpad. I think I
never experienced this issue after booting has finished. With the boot
sequence being reordered a bit in Karmic, this is gonna be exciting
^Wnerve-wrecking.

[Bug 352440] Re: Hardy: igb support for Intel 82576

2009-09-01 Thread Stefan Bader
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification:
+
+ Impact: The Intel 82576 network card is not supported on Hardy but newer
+ motherboards are shipped with these.
+
+ Fix: Add the current Intel standalone igb driver under a new name and
+ with already supported PCI IDs removed to LUM. Both the old and new
+ driver can be used concurrently.
+
+ Testcase: Load old and new driver in parallel to check for concurrency.
+ Successfully tested on real hardware (see below)
+
+ ---
+
Can support for the Intel 82576 be backported to the igb driver in
  Hardy?

Some newer HP motherboards are shipping with the interface. [Note:
almost *all* Nehalem-based motherboards ship with this interface]

Attached information is from a machine using the interface but installed

[Bug 420837] Re: computer-janitor only deletes old linux headers. Not modules/image.

2009-09-01 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I have recently changed Computer Janitor so that it is rather more
careful about what to suggest for removal. The problem was that it was
considering all common third-party packages as uninteresting to the
user, which caused a lot of people to accidentally remove stuff they
care about.

The fix for that unfortunately also means the janitor now doesn't think
old kernels should be removed.

Perhaps in karmic+1 we can finally fix things properly so that useless
kernels go away, but third-party stuff stays. For now, I am satisfied
with the current compromise: it doesn't clean up everything, but it does
not clean up too much, either.

[Bug 419295] Re: Price: Free in every software description sounds cheesy and is redundant!

2009-09-01 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
By child items I mean that there would be a parent Get Software item
that showed free and paid software intermingled, with child items for if
you just wanted to view one or the other. So in the normal Get
Software section, it would still be necessary to show the price on
individual application screens.

[Bug 418319] Re: computer janitor window is always empty

2009-09-01 Thread Lars Wirzenius
If the janitor shows nothing to clean, then it doesn't find anything
wrong in your system. That's probably a good thing.

The button should be greyed out in that case, though. I'll retitle the
bug to indicate that as the problem.

pvendeyse, please file a separate bug about your problem, as I suspect
something else is going on there. If you can, run it from the command
line, and attach the output to the terminal as well.

[Bug 157187] Re: ability to specify PDF metadata in print dialog

2009-09-01 Thread Mark Edgington
It seems that the CUPS-PDF backend uses ghostscript as the 'real'
backend, and ghostscript (as far as I can tell) currently doesn't offer
any way of setting the metadata. If it did (or will at some point),
then I believe an interface to set this metadata could be added to the
CUPS-PDF backend. But as it stands, this is not possible -- does that
sound correct?

I tried a simple test, editing a file in OpenOffice, changing various
properties in the file menu, and then printing via CUPS-PDF. But, none
of the changed properties were visible in the produced PDF.

Of course each program can provide its own means of generating PDF files
(in OpenOffice, that would be using File-Export as PDF), but it is
unreasonable to assume that all programs which can print must/should
also provide a means of generating their own PDF files. This is where
having customizable PDF metadata on the CUPS-backend level makes sense.
