[Bug 420674] Re: Update libmixlib-config-ruby to new upstream version 1.0.12

2009-09-28 Thread fabrice_sp
Joshua: as I haven't found any changelog in the tarball, I'll ask motu-
release for advise on that package

Dear Motu-relase,

Do the FFe of Bug #424576 apply to this one also?
The only rdepends is chef, so I would say it's ok.

Thanks,
Fabrice

[Bug 438544] [NEW] Folderview-widget does not open directories with spaces in the name

2009-09-28 Thread marquiz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-folderview

I'm running Kubuntu Karmic alpha6.
plasma-widget-folderview-4.3.1-0ubuntu1

A. Prerequisites
1. Put a folder-widget to the plasma desktop
2. Make the folder-widget show the Desktop folder (settings->location)
   * this is important, other locations seem to work correctly
3. From a text terminal, create a subdirectory (to the Desktop folder) with a
space in the dirname
  * ~/Desktop$ mkdir  foo\ bar

B. How to repeat the bug
1. Click the "foo bar" folder icon in the folder-widget

C. Expected result
A dolphin window showing folder "~/Desktop/foo bar" would open

D. What really happens
A dolphin window with two folders is opened: "~/Desktop/foo" and
"~/Documents/bar". Both locations are unexistent in the file system.

[Bug 19885] Re: memtest86+: does not work: wouldn't fit into memory

2009-09-28 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
AFAIK this bug occurs in computers with more than 1 GB RAM, sometimes
bug appears when you add more RAM. I guess, that another reason can be
installation of memtest in big hard disks, when memtest86+.bin file is
placed not in first partition.

According to email from Debian bugreport this bug can be fixed by using
ELF executable version of memtest86 and one-line patch:

From: "Rajeev V. Pillai"
To: 319...@bugs.debian.org
Subject: memtest86+: does not work: wouldn't fit into memory [PATCH]
Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2007

I've managed to boot both memtest86 (v3.2) and memtest86+ (v1.65 and
v1.70) using grub by following the steps below:

1. Use the ELF executable version of memtest (file memtest)
instead of the zImage i.e. directly bootable version (file memtest.bin).
2. Apply the patch below which changes 1 line - the load address of
the ELF executable from 0x1 to 0x10. Otherwise,
grub complains: "Error 7: Loading below 1MB is not supported"
3. Make the binaries as usual by typing `make'.
4. Load the ELF executable memtest like this:

   title Memtest86+ v1.70
root (hd0,2) # Change this for your setup
   kernel --type=netbsd /boot/memtest

[Bug 159382] Re: Open windows in previous location and size

2009-09-28 Thread Travis Watkins
I know for a fact metacity only remembers the location of windows if you
save them in the session and we do that too. For everything else it is
up to the application to put itself where it was before. You may have
been seeing a GDK but that would move the window by the size of the
window decoration but that is fixed as well.

[Bug 438543] [NEW] sound inaudible in X; audible from TTY

2009-09-28 Thread mythomaniac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: consolekit

Release: Ubuntu karmic (development branch) 9.10

Package Version: Installed: 0.3.1-0ubuntu2
 Candidate: 0.3.1-0ubuntu2
 Version table:
*** 0.3.1-0ubuntu2 0
 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com
karmic/main Packages
 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Expectation:

After having installed Xorg, AwesomeWM, Pulseaudio, Alsa, their
dependencies and recommended packages it was assumed that sound would
have worked in Xorg.

What occurred:

There is no audio in Xorg, though from any TTY sound does work. In fact
while playing a sound file, or a video (within firefox) within Xorg I
need to log into a TTY (example, ctrl+alt+f2) to hear the sound of
either. Yet when I switch back to Xorg (ctrl+alt+f7) sound vanishes.

Looking deeper into the issue revealed that alsamixer works and gives
the full options of my sound card, but while in Xorg and through a
virtual terminal alsamixer states, "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open
failed for default: No such file or directory".

As well when issuing the command "aplay -l" from TTY my sound card is
listed as both playback device and sub device, but while in Xorg under a
virtual terminal aplay states, "aplay: device_list:233: no soundcards
found...".

Going ever deeper to solve the issue an strace was done from both TTY
(http://pastebin.com/m7d7643b7) and from within a virtual console from
Xorg (http://pastebin.com/m468d16cb).

What was shown was that while in Xorg permission to "/dev/snd/controlC0"
was denied, but while from a TTY it was not.

If the pastebin.com postings disappear or are changed I will provide an
attachment with both results, and labeled accordingly as well.

As one can see this is for sure a bug and one that should be fixed. For
it is essential to have sound working for those users who use Ubuntu
that wish not to use Gnome, Kde, or Xfce.

I would like to thank DanaG for helping track down this problem and maco
for helping figure out how to file a bug report (both can be found the
#ubuntu+1 channel on Freenode).

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

[Bug 432254] Re: FreeBSD not detected by os-prober

2009-09-28 Thread Peter Belew
I finally got the boot into FreeBSD to work. Here's what I put in
40_custom before running update-grub:

#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.
menuentry "freebsd" {
  set root=(hd0,2,a)
  chainloader +1
  boot
}

So the root specification is based on the FreeBSD slice (number) and
partition (letter) method of specifying a partition, as in the legacy
GRUB, except that the primary partition ("slice") numbering starts at 1
rather than 0.

Problem solved!

2009-09-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for reporting this bug, however unfortunately the retracer failed
to generate a useful symbolic stack trace this time.

We're closing the bug as unable to analyze, but if you can still
reproduce it on the development release, feel free to reopen the bug.
In this case, please try to obtain a backtrace manually following the
instructions at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing and upload the
backtrace (as an attachment) to the bug report.

Re: [Bug 432254] Re: FreeBSD not detected by os-prober

2009-09-28 Thread Peter Belew
I put the following in "40_custom" and then ran update-grub:

#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.
menuentry "freebsd" {
   set root=(hd0,8)
  chainloader +1
  boot
}

On rebooting, I selected the 'freebsd' entry in the grub menu.

The result was the message "error: no loaded kernel".

My fstab entry for BSD's root partition is

##bsd partition(s)
## bsd: /dev/ad0s2a
/dev/sda8 /mnt/bsdrootufs ro,ufstype=ufs2 0 0

and that works well.

Perhaps I have to specify the FreeBSD loader as a kernel, or address
the root partition more like the way one does it in legacy GRUB?

Bummer. The greyscale icons in the notification area are not only very
ugly compared to their nice full color counterparts (like the bluetooth
icon) they are, more importantly, very hard to see and hence represent a
serious degradation in UI functionality.

[Bug 172247] Re: fullscreen controls flicker on and off

2009-09-28 Thread Carlos Troncoso Phillips
still an issue in 9.04.
flicker only occurs using compiz.
Even using kb shortcuts to advance or rewind, flicker occurs and eventualy
looses focus forcing a mouse click to regain use of kb shortcuts.
My bet is that it happens because of the rendering of the controls over the
video makes the video loose focus, causing it to flicker.

[Bug 436724] Re: lock screen doesn't work

2009-09-28 Thread mac_v
Why does this have to be done.

My system runs 24/7, so often i lock the screen and leave.
But since i have selected auto-login , this option is not available.

At the cost of simplifying things for new users , things are made harder
for the regular users :/

The question of security issue for auto-login might be asked , "Oh , anyone
might hard shutdown the system and can easily boot back in and view your
data"...
If a stranger or someone is walking and having access to my system , then i
have more serious concerns than my system being hacked!
Well... people i am surrounded by maintain their boundaries and dont use the
system when its locked or use a different session!
Pls dont do this on the basis of security.

Ted gould said this was done because the netbook users forget the
password and lock screen and get locked out!

If it is the issue that user are forgetting the password , a solution could be:
By default , if the user selects auto-login during install, greyout the option
in the menu [or do not display the option , the menu is getting huge as is!]
Now present the option to display the lock-screen in the System Administration
> Login screen.
[/] show lock screen option in the indicator session.

This would be a better solution. As this is the place where the user
selects the auto-login feature.

Not all users have nosy people around them nor does everyone forget
their password. Why does the solution to a problem always have to mean
the removal of the option!

[Bug 438537] [NEW] Screen brightness does not function on Acer Aspire Timeline 5810TZ

2009-09-28 Thread executorvs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I'm running Karmic from a fresh install with all current updates as of 11:30PM
central standard in the US 9/28/09.
this problem is present in Jaunty as well.
my computer is an acer aspire timeline 5810TZ-4274.

using FN+left arrow or FN+right arrow activates notify-OSD indicator but has no
actual effect on brightness.
adding screen brightness applet makes no difference.

[Bug 438536] [NEW] Notifications should show up closer to top right

2009-09-28 Thread Patrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: notify-osd

Currently the notify-osd notifications allot space for the volume
control/brightness semi-notifications; this is rather jarring when the
volume/brightness isn't being adjusted, unlike in Jaunty where
application notifications default to above the volume/brightness.

[Bug 434361] Re: gdm sometimes fails to switch to VT7 after new upstart merge

2009-09-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package usplash - 0.5.39

---
usplash (0.5.39) karmic; urgency=low

  * Convert usplash to Upstart jobs, so that we handle VT switching on
startup/shutdown properly again (LP: #434361). This makes use of a new
'starting-dm' event emitted by display manager jobs, so declare Breaks
on gdm and kdm versions that don't do this.
  * Add -t option to set the initial timeout without having to wait for the
fifo to appear. (Upstart jobs don't tend to talk to usplash at the
moment, so we need a longer timeout to start with in the initramfs,
until we get as far as running init scripts.)
  * Add --ignore-sigterm option as a temporary hack to make it easier to use
Upstart's built-in process-killing code.

[Bug 159382] Re: Open windows in previous location and size

2009-09-28 Thread Elias Dorneles da Silveira Junior
But it works in metacity, are you sure it is something that Pidgin is missing?
I thought this bug was due to compiz not remembering the last location and size
of the windows, like metacity does.
Couldn't it be a job for the plugin "Place windows"?

[Bug 404351] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in exit()

2009-09-28 Thread Angel Guzman Maeso
I cant make a valgrind log because this crash only happens sometimes:

$ G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly  valgrind -v --tool=memcheck
--leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=valgrind.log nautilus
--sm-client-id 10d173c22f5b45bdd112476714601848800036130047
--sm-client-state-file
/home/shakaran/.config/session-state/nautilus-1248453862.desktop
(nautilus:23511): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Could not load SM state file
'/home/shakaran/.config/session-state/nautilus-1248453862.desktop': No such
file or directory

The trick for nautilus-debug-log.txt dont work.

PS: I have translated the Valgrind wiki page into Spanish, for potential users
who need it.

[Bug 438532] [NEW] Ubuntu One Symlink Support

2009-09-28 Thread Jon Green
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Doesn't follow symlinks to upload files I have in special directories. I
planned to use a symlink to link Ubuntu One to one of my other folders.
So I don't have to maintain two different directories that hold the same
data. I could probably move my directory into the Ubuntu One directory
and replace it with a symlink, but this seems to be the opposite of user
friendly. Also, It would be nice to have a loading bar pop-up when you
mouse-over the Ubuntu One icon with kb/s and the file it's uploading.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.
