[Bug 442856] [NEW] Freshly installed 9.10 Beta results in black screen after booting

2009-10-04 Thread chst
Public bug reported:

I installed 9.10 Beta with 'update-manager -d' choose the "fresh" option
(menu.lst and other files)
The system installs, boots, shows Grub2 (probabely) and is off with a black
screen.
The HD works some time but nthing happens.
It's just fresh installs which appear broken, 9.04 still works on another
partition.

Bug #416017 is different, because I use 9.10 Beta, where Grub2 should be
fixed.

I saved all files from /var/log but I don't know which to include here.

[Bug 442854] [NEW] Daily cron fails

2009-10-04 Thread Loïc Minier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: couchdb

Hi

On two different boxes where I have Ubuntu Desktop and hence couchdb-bin, I get
nightly emails about the couchdb cron having failed:
/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: error accessing /var/log/couchdb/0.10.0~svn813472: No such file or

error: found error in /var/log/couchdb/0.10.0~svn813472/*.log , skipping

Note that the version doesn't match the version of the package; I
suspect this conffile was dropped in some version, but wasn't
rm_conffiled properly.

2009-10-04 Thread Gabor Vas
Public bug reported:

Dear All,
please find the error message above. Since I updated (sudo apt-get update
&upgrade) my Ubuntu 9.04 on an Acer 6000 TravelMate laptop cca. two weeks ago.
I cannot boot the system, not even from a live CD. In the machine's setup there
is no possibility to control apic. I also tried to edit the command line
entitled 'kernel' while adding the nolapic noapic commands. The windows xp
still runs because it was never connected to the internet. Any good solutions?
Please do not hesitate to ask for additional information.
Kind regards

[Bug 442852] [NEW] Several messages during startup in Karmic Koala

2009-10-04 Thread daniero
Public bug reported:

During startup and shutdown I saw several messages that their content
are in the attachment in 3 jpeg images.

Also one more thing I wanted to add, is that during the first alphas,
Karmic was behaving correctly while I used it, but now in the Beta, I
find it behaves just like 8.10 or 9.04 where the desktop is unresponsive
in brief periods of 3 - 5 seconds, then returns to normal and continues
to halt and so on... So my only option now is continue using 8.04 since
I don't have these brief "freezes" while on the desktop loading
applications with the LTS version.

Sorry I can't be of much help since I'm just starting using this O.S. I
love using it, but for now I'm stuck with 8.04 even though I'd love to
jump to a more recent version.

2009-10-04 Thread sheldonross
Ok, the shutdown graphic appears to be displaying now. I still see
several messages before xsplash shows up though.

I've attached a bootchart as of a couple a minutes ago with everything
up to date.

[Bug 442408] Re: Remove all *-gdm-theme packages, they don't work anymore

2009-10-04 Thread soc
Thanks Philip.
Ok, sounds good.

Additionally I would suggest adding a small note to the description which
mentions that:
a) these themes are for an old version of gdm
b) don't work with the newer gdm and
c) the new gdm has no theming options at the moment (so that people can stop
searching for them),
so that at least those who read them see that this is probably not what they
want.

[Bug 442846] [NEW] FS-Cache: Cache cachefiles stopped due to I/O error

2009-10-04 Thread Wido den Hollander
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I build my own kernel on the Ubuntu sources with these modules enabled
and started testing.

The modules load fine and everything seems OK until the caching starts,
this is what comes up in the dmesg.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can

need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

[Bug 442833] [NEW] faac encodes large files with incorrect length

2009-10-04 Thread Eric Pernice
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: faac

Very long audio files ( > 13 hours, 15 minutes, 21 seconds) encoded by
faac do not display correct length information during playback. All
files longer than said length show the length as 13:15:21, but continue
to play to completion (past the indicated end of the track). This
behaviour has been verified on both VLC and an Apple iPod. This is
problematic because seeking through the track past the 13:15:21 mark is
not possible.

Verified on numerous audio files, with the following usage:

faac -R 44100 -B 16 -C 1 -w -q 80 --track "1" --genre "Spoken Word" -X
--year "2009" --artist "author" --album "title" --title "title" -o
"temp.m4b" "temp.pcm"

where temp.pcm was created by:

mplayer -vc null -vo null -ao pcm:nowaveheader:fast:file=temp.pcm
temp.mp3

temp.pcm and temp.mp3 were both verified to have the correct length.

[Bug 119730] Re: Slow SATA performance

2009-10-04 Thread The GuiGuy
Some good news. In part, at least.

ASUS M2N-VN-DH mobo, Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) AMD64.

This syste, had been unusable. If I enabled AHCI the system would lock
up on the grub loading message. This meant I had to tune down to IDE
mode. SATA transfers were awful and general file transfers to USB where
even worse.

I'm pleased to report that after the latest kernel updates -
2.6.28-15-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 9 10:48:52 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux" the system now boots with AHCI enabled and xfer speeds are
right up there where we'd expect them to be. Importantly high xfer rates
are maintained on extended large file transfers. All in all, it's a
relief.

Unfortunately the problem persists on another system with an ASUS M3A
mobo when running Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) AMD64m kernel 2.6.28-15. No
problem with Fedora, however.

The icon already exists. It's the same icon that is used while update

the default one, and orange while it's working?

Both xubuntu and mythbuntu make this change by default to have
update-notifier used. Humanity is used for Mythbuntu too.

Re: [Bug 438536] Re: Notifications should show up closer to top right

2009-10-04 Thread Steve Dodier
As far as I know, the complete story is:

The desktop experience team decided to try the bubbles in the middle right
of the screen, to avoid the problems with some apps' toolbars being
overridden. So, at the same time they reviewed the bubble placement to get
rid of the notifications stacking problems. When it was decided to put the
top right corner by default, the new placement stayed... and i'm personally
for removing it too. :)

Reverted to Jaunty and upgraded old packages (openoffice was upgraded as
part of this upgrade). Tried updating to Karmic beta but ran into the
same problem as before. No luck :(

[Bug 442828] [NEW] installation does not work for left-handed users

2009-10-04 Thread Jonathon Conte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 beta via a i386 Desktop CD. I ran ubiquity
only (sans desktop). The GTK+ buttons used in ubiquity only accept
clicks from the left mouse button and not the right. This prohibits
left-handed users from being able to use the installer in a left-handed
fashion.

I propose that ubiquity's behavior be altered to match that of gdm's so
that a user can use either the right or the left mouse button to click
the buttons in ubiquity. Additionally, any right-click context menus
that currently exist in ubiquity would need to be removed. (I know that
at the very least the custom partitioning setup screen makes use of
these). These changes would allow either right-handed or left-handed
users to perform an installation without needing to prompt a user to
find out how he or she is using the mouse.
