[Bug 426497] Re: kqemu mode not compiled for karmic

2009-10-27 Thread Nigel Pallett
If kqemu support is disabled in karmic, why are the kqemu-source and
kqemu-common packages available in the karmic repositories ?

I agree with Traumflug's comments - there are MANY multicore processors
shipping today that do not support KVM, plus of course, all of the lower
end processors.

The removal of kqemu support is not even mentioned in the Karmic Release
Notes !!

[Bug 363620] Re: Apparmor breaks Squeezecenter when upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04

2009-10-27 Thread Soren Hansen
Squeezecenter is not a part of Ubuntu. It changes the configuration of
Ubuntu in a way that breaks Ubuntu policy. We're happy to work with
squeezecenter on a better solution, but as it stands, Ubuntu is doing
exactly what is is supposed to do. As such, I'm marking this bug
invalid.

If you want to help fix this, provide some more informaion about the
changes it makes to the mysql profile, and - if you can - explain why
those changes are needed.. That's the only way we can begin to look at
how this can be fixed properly (perhaps by Ubuntu, perhaps by
Squeezecenter). Once you've provided this information, feel free to
reopen the bug.

[Bug 461092] Re: can't add more than 29 instances

2009-10-27 Thread Thierry Carrez
Thanks Paul for this bug report.

From the logs it appears that the instances get private addresses 172.19.1.2
to 172.19.1.30.
There is a VNET_ADDRSPERNET=32 by default in eucalyptus.conf, limiting the
maximum number of instances in a single security group. Did you fire all of
your instances in the same group ? Could you try increasing this parameter to
see if it changes anything ?

[Bug 461271] Re: zenmap not installed to menus properly

2009-10-27 Thread Soren Hansen
This is because the zenmap as root menu entry uses su-to-root. su-to-
root is in the menu package which we don't use in Ubuntu by default.
As a workaround, you can install the menu package and it should work.

For Lucid, we should replace the call to su-to-root in zenmap-
root.desktop with calls to gksudo or gksu or whatever the desktop team
prefers nowadays.

Samba fails to start after the upgrade. Perhaps a bad config file merge.
Can you attach your /etc/samba/smb.conf, please?

demonstrates that the problem is real. This failure is introduced by an

[Bug 461156] Re: User data is not base64 decoded before being presented to the instance

2009-10-27 Thread Thierry Carrez
From bug 461922 (which discusses a fix that did not make it into Ubuntu yet):
=
After applying the [proposed] fix, euca-run-instances will fail depending on
the user-data input. I found this while trying to provide a shell script as
user data input. The bug is triggered by the --user-data parameter as well as
providing user-data from a file using --user-data-file.

I understand that euca-run-instances should work with any sort of user-
data regardless of it's content. ec2-run-instances works flawlessly with
eucalyptus in this case.

Note the used input strings:

FOO (no space at the beginning, works)
FO (space, two character word, works)
FOO (space at the beginning, three character word, fails)

Thanks,

After running for awhile vcpus=1 hangs as well. There
are no errors in any of the logs.

I've tried using xen in the interim and it all works: 1 cpu, 1+cpu,
and hvm. I guess I'll just stick with that until kvm is working
on intel i7. My machine is a Gateway FX6801-01 in case that
helps.

thanks

Re: [Bug 460581] Re: [Karmic] host lookup error

2009-10-27 Thread Marcerino
Do you maybe have any further suggestions for how to debug this?

Something must be interfering with those lookups. The effect is new in
Karmic, so would be nice to figure out what it is.

What is the difference between the first lookup that 'host' does and the
second?

It seems that something is blocking the corresponding network traffic. II
have no firewall, so that can't be it. I looked at various log-files in
/var/log, but the only suspicious thing I see are a lot of messages from
wpa_supplicant. Is there something I can do to verify whether this is
related? My network is wireless with simple WEP-authentication, so maybe
wpa_supplicant is not needed? If so, why has it been started?

Best regards,

Marco.

[Bug 462140] [NEW] maximum 61 running instances, others shutting down

2009-10-27 Thread paul guermonprez
Public bug reported:

hello

I have a cluster of 6 machines+master, 384 cores total,
seen correctly by AVAILABILITYZONE :
AVAILABILITYZONE|- vm types free / max cpu ram disk
AVAILABILITYZONE|- m1.small 0090 / 0384 1128 2

But when i launch VMs, only 61 end up running for ever. the others are
just shutting down (as seen by describe-instances).

The config is pretty standard, except for the number of VMs per subnet, changed
to a higher value.
I am launching the instances with --addressing private to avoid networking
limitations.

Attached are the logs and config files.

[Bug 462140] Re: maximum 61 running instances, others shutting down

2009-10-27 Thread paul guermonprez
Neil, we are talking about 384 cores seen by the sum of all OSes (64 per node
OS).
No special trick to overprovisione the nodes.

In the new intel machines Nehalem class, we have a technology called
hyperthreading (remember pentium 4 ? same thing).
There's 192 physical cores, but seen as 384 cores by the OS.

That's the way it is supposed to be deployed in production, VT included.
But i can always try to disable the feature in the BIOS if needed.

thanks

Nope, hyperthreading should be fine.

I strongly suspect that addresses per subnet in eucalyptus.conf is either set
to 64 (that will give you 61 instances max and is consistent with your
behavior) or you increased the value but didn't restart the CC (it need to
cleanrestart).

Can you post your eucalyptus.conf?

[Bug 462172] [NEW] samba Too many files are currently in use.

2009-10-27 Thread Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

When copying a directory with a good amount of files ( 1,000) to a
Samba share from a Windows 7 client, I get the error Too many files are
currently in use.. This only happens on Ubuntu Server 9.10 (Samba
3.4.0) . I have tested on Ubuntu 9.04 (Samba 3.2.0) and the copy was
successful.

While copying the files, I ran watch 'sudo lsof | grep smb | wc -l' and
noticed that whenever the number of files open reaches somewhere between
1,200 and 1,300 I receive the error. If I wait a couple of seconds, the
number of open files drop down significantly and I am able to choose
Try Again on the error dialog, but once the number of files open
climbs back up, the error reappears.

I am filling this as a bug because the copying of files works on a fresh
install of 9.04, but fails on 9.10.

[Bug 461156] Re: User data is not base64 decoded before being presented to the instance

2009-10-27 Thread Scott Moser
I'm also unable to reproduce Markus's problems with --user-data ' FOO
' and a patched euca2ools.

I've built a ppa build of euca2ools with the patch at
https://launchpad.net/~smoser/+archive/ppa .

I tested that the patch works against ec2 with user data of FOO ,
and that it fails against eucalyptus as Markus said.

The issue is that boto (used by euca2ools) is encoding the supplied user-data
in connection.py:run_instances with:
| base64.urlsafe_b64encode(user_data)

For many input strings it is true that:
  base64.b64decode(base64.urlsafe_b64encode(str)) == str

For ' FOO ' it is not. It will throw an error.

My guess is that eucalyptus is taking the request from euca2ools and
doing a b64decode rather than urlsafe_b64decode on it. This is throwing
error and being returned to the user as a parse error.

Thus, I'm fairly sure that eucalyptus will have to be changed to expect
user_data to be encoded via urlsafe_b64decode() rather than b64decode().

urlsafe_b64encode is explained at http://docs.python.org/library/base64.html as:
| Encode string s using a URL-safe alphabet, which substitutes - instead of +
| and _ instead of / in the standard Base64 alphabet. The result can still
contain =.

I suspect that the eucalyptus

To reproduce, you have to
a.) fix euca2ools so that it doesn't doubly encode user-data
hand-patch the euca-run-instances, or use my ppa build

b.) run: ec2-run-instances -k mykey --user-data   FOO  ${EMI}

[Bug 458904] Re: Adding nodes in several waves after launching VMs is not possible

2009-10-27 Thread Mathias Gug
After more investigation it turns out that the problem lies with the
avahi resolver. Whenever a new public IP address (for an instance) is
added to the CC, avahi-daemon will publish it automatically.

Subsequent installs will use one of the publish IP by avahi daemon
(which turns out to be the last IP added to the public network
interface). euca_find_cluser uses avahi dns resolution to get the CC IP
address to get the seed from and will only use the published IP by the
CC avahi publication job if the resolution leads to 169.254.169.254.

The proposed workaround is to always use the IP publish by the CC
publication job.

2009-10-27 Thread paul guermonprez
hello

The conf is in the attached tar file, but i changed the value from 32
(default) to 512 from the beginning of the install (i ran into this
VNET_ADDRPERNET problem yesterday). 64 was never entered.

I've just rebooted the entire cluster and ran more tests. I can have more than
61 instances running, but some are shutting down.
I am lauching with --addressing private to avoid public IPs limitations (just
in case).

So 61 does not seem to be a definitive threshold, and the problem does
not seem to be VNET_ADDRPERNET related.

Will run more tests tomorrow morning CET.

I can confirm that the proposed branch fixes the issue:

1. Make a local build and extract euca_find_cluster from the eucalyptus udeb.
2. Copy euca_find_cluster to
http://people.canonical.com/~mathiaz/euca_find_cluster
3. Start a few instances on the UEC install and make sure that the public IPs
are configured:

ubu...@uec-cc:~$ ip addr show eth0
2: eth0: BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP

4. Boot a karmic server install and select Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud.
5. Once the network is up and the installer is prompting for the hostname open
a new shell.
6. Dowload the new euca_find_cluster.
7. Verify that the normal euca_find_cluster returns 192.168.222.17 as the IP
address of the CC.
8. Verify that the new euca_find_cluster returns 10.153.108.210 as the IP
address of the CC.
9. Copy the new euca_find_cluster to /usr/bin/
10. Proceed with the installation which is successful.
