[Bug 481203] Re: Hardy 8.04.3 openssh does not forward X11 always cannot open display

2009-11-16 Thread Jose L. VG
X11Forwarding is ON:
...
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
...

And xauth is installed, when I connect (the first time or after removing
.Xauthority) I get:
/usr/bin/X11/xauth: creating new authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority

The Display variable is OK:
$ echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0

The port 6010 is listening (I guess this maps to X display #10):
$ netstat -pan |grep 6010
(Not all processes could be identified, non-owned process info
will not be shown, you would have to be root to see it all.)
tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:6010 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
-
tcp6   0  0 ::1:6010:::*LISTEN
-

I can even connect manually to port 6010:

OOOPps!

I got it!

I could do telnet 127.0.0.1 6010 BUT NOT telnet localhost 6010...

The problem was my /etc/hosts!!!
It was:
127.0.1.1 madcvd01lnx.rfranco.com localhost madcvd01lnx
Now I have fixed it to:
127.0.0.1 madcvd01lnx.rfranco.com localhost madcvd01lnx

And gedit starts up correctly.

What does 127.0.1.1 mean anyway? (I think that value was there in the defaul
config for /etc/hosts)
Does it have a reason or is it just an errata? Does it have anything to do with
IPv6?

[Bug 482086] Re: System time is very slow and differs with real for about 1 minute per hour

2009-11-16 Thread Vitaliy Pomazyonkov
There are some messages about ntpd and it seems that all OK with it.
After system starts it sometimes estabilishing WiFi connection too slow, in
this case i see ntpd_initres[6039]: host name not found: ntp.ubuntu.com, but
when connection is successfully estabilished i see ntpd[8164]: synchronized to
83.229.210.18, stratum 3 etc.
But anyway i think that this issue is related not only to ntpd, it seems that
system trying to calculate time precision by some internal algorythm and do it
wrong. May be it relates to adjtime etc?

Also i didn't change any specific configurations in my system, this
issue appear right after clean installation of Ubuntu 8.04.3 and
continues after all updates applied.

[Bug 483657] [NEW] interface-mtu kills my network connection

2009-11-16 Thread vervelover
Public bug reported:

The interface-mtu string in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf kills my network
connection. If I don't edit that file removing the word interface-mtu on
every ubuntu install I do, I can't surf the web. The connection stays on
but it won't surf. My isp is fastweb, a very common isp in Italy. I
tried with at least 3 different ubuntu laptops on this and other fastweb
networks, the bug is always there since at least ubuntu 7.10.

So many people in Italy have trouble with that and have a awful
experience with ubuntu because of something that could be so easily
fixed. just google interface-mtu fastweb in google italia to have
proof of that. Don't know why I can't find a bug report of this on
launchpad, too many lazy people maybe.

At least, if you don't want to fix this bug, PLEASE make sure that
every dhcp3 update won't override the file without asking, like it does
now. I have to edit the file everytime the update manager updates the
file. This is really annoying and could descourage any non expert user
from adopting ubuntu.

I believe in linux and ubuntu, and speading it between all of my friends
but bugs like this are a bit embarassing..

[Bug 483657] Re: interface-mtu kills my network connection

2009-11-16 Thread vervelover
Yes, but this is the way things are which is different from the way
things should be and making people buy a new router seems to me more
difficult than just not enabling a small string in a file by default,
expecially if this string does nothing but causing trouble to new and
unexperienced users which are a target I think ubuntu should aim to
reach.

That said, I found this bug was introduced and solved in intrepid,
reintroduced and solved in jaunty, reintroduced and not solved in
karmic.

Well, at least, why should a dhcp3 update override that file? at least I
could make an install stable, instead of having to tell all my friend
how to edit the file after every update.

[Bug 156085] Re: Could not open /proc/bus/usb/devices

2009-11-16 Thread mahogeni muse
Ok, I am totally new to linux so I also am a novice when it comes to
updating patches. I downloaded Ubuntu Desktop 9 and of course it won't
recognize the USB Devices on my laptop. I have a Toshiba Satellite
A215-S5818 with Windows Vista (build 6). Ubuntu 9 is the guest OS on
VMWare Workstation 7.0 (build 203739). I've tried to mount usbfs
manually using

mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb

I've tried modifying /etc/fstab by adding the following code at the
bottom:

usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0

The last thing I read was to modify the etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh and
uncomment

mkdir -p /dev/bus/proc/usb/.usbfs
domount usbfs /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs -obusmode=0700,devmode=0600,listmode=0644
ln-s .usbfs/devices/dev/bus/usb/devices
mount --rbind/dev/bus/usb/proc/bus/usb
$ sudo /etc/etc/init.d/nountdevsubfs.sh.start

However, when I went to the /etc/init.d directory there was no
mountdevsubfs.sh file so I created one and added the code above with no
luck. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be sincerely
appreciated...

Thanks!

[Bug 480783] Re: Eucalyptus does not allow api connection over https

2009-11-16 Thread Neil Soman
As they carry QueryID/SecretKey in clear, anyone that can sniff the
network can gain admin privileges on eucalyptus.

This assertion is incorrect. The secret is never sent in the clear. A
replay attack is possible and its gravity will depend on the specific
operation that is replayed.

Chris Jones is correct. There is a workaround for this however which
involves explicitly trusting the cert, which depending on the client may
or may not be a manual step.

Eucalyptus upstream will fix this in the next release.

thanks.

Hi, David.

I think it's a bad idea to kill MySQL with -9 signal.
It's o.k. for MySQL instances with big key_buffer_size to stop within several

IMHO, it's better just to print that MySQL can't be stopped ant let user to

The hash computed by the client includes a time stamp and a time of
expiry, so it's only vulnerable to a replay attack for a limited time.

Also, the hash is specific to the request (the contents of the request
is part of the hash calculation), so if someone were to intercept it and
try to use it, they would only be able to perform operations the user
already intended to perform. If Eucalyptus were to keep track of hashes
and reject an already seen hash (naturally expiring them as time
passes), this vulnerability should be entirely mitigated, as far as I
can see.

[Bug 480783] Re: Eucalyptus does not allow api connection over https

2009-11-16 Thread chris grzegorczyk
Support for SSL is already in the code as of 1.6.1. The blocker to
including it in the original release was client support (as Neil
mentioned). This is on the agenda and will be addressed shortly.

[Bug 483928] [NEW] ssh-keyscan(1) exits prematurely on some non-fatal errors

2009-11-16 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssh-client

This concerns openssh-client 1:5.1p1-5ubuntu1 in Karmic.

I am using ssh-keyscan(1) for its intended purpose: building an
ssh_known_hosts file for a large network. Most of the hosts on this
network are well-maintained systems, with properly-functioning SSH
servers, and present no difficulty to the program.

However, a handful of hosts are barely alive, with SSH servers that are
not exactly in good working order. ssh-keyscan(1) currently will scan
these systems, encounter some form of error, and then---right here is
the problem---exit in the middle of the scan. The last bit of stderr
output may look like

# A.B.C.D SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.3
# A.B.C.E SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.3
# A.B.C.F SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.7p1
Connection closed by A.B.C.F

or

# A.B.C.D SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.1
# A.B.C.E SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.1
# A.B.C.F SSH-2.0-mpSSH_0.1.0
Received disconnect from A.B.C.F: 10: Protocol error

or

# A.B.C.D SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.4p1
# A.B.C.E SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.0p1
# A.B.C.F SSH-2.0-mpSSH_0.1.0
Received disconnect from A.B.C.F: 11: SSH Disabled

(These are the different failure modes I've observed to date)

ssh-keyscan(1) needs to be robust to these kinds of errors---simply make
a note of them, and continue on with the scan. I don't want to have to
find out which systems are misbehaving by running and re-running the
scan (each run yields at most one bad host, obviously), nor manually
edit out the few bad apples from the input list of hosts (especially
considering that this particular subset can change over time). Neither
is feasible when the number of hosts being scanned is very large.

[Bug 250549] Re: Wrong interface speed from snmpd running as snmp user

2009-11-16 Thread Zebra-Rake
Now I know why my MRTG and OpenNMS do not correctly report the interface
speed. It is this BUG. A real bug that needs to be fixed.

Someone, needs to inform Chuck Short that this needs to be moved to high
priority fix, since every NMS system depends on snmpd answering the
'speed' correctly. My OpenNMS is filled up with errors do to exceeding
interface speed. Because this bug reports all the interfaces at 10mbs.

[Bug 438244] Re: ubuntu-xsplash-artwork contains redundant graphics

2009-11-16 Thread Terry 'Mongoose' Hendrix
This seems to break xsplash for 1024x768 ( 1.3_ ) - and other aspects
that don't match 2560x1600 (1.6 ). Also this causes a wasteful amount
of memory to be used during the processing of the image. I noticed this
on my netbook, and then found this discussion here that seems to be the
cause. It would be best to expose options passed to xsplash for custom
theming. That way we won't be forced into dealing with your hacks. If
you really wanted to fix your live cd problem ship a solid color
background with a variable logo and trobber, and let people customize
their machine as they see fit.

I just want to use a 1024x768 image for my xsplash on my tablet without
having to alter xsplash source or make a hacked up 2560x1600 bg image as
I'm unable to find a way to pass options into xsplash via a config file
anywhere.

I made my xsplash theme by replacing files in /usr/share/images/xsplash,
since there is support for theming as yet.

[Bug 483464] [NEW] Bad graphics modes.

2009-11-16 Thread dlamer
Public bug reported:

Here is my previous unsolved bug about the problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
openchrome/+bug/350330

Now I have some more information about it:

xrandr shows graphics modes that are not available for my LCD matrixs
(i.e matrix is up to 1024x768 , xrandr shows few modes upper than it,
i.e. 1920x1440)

I think ubuntu get's the highest mode by default ( IN: instalator ,
usplash , gdm login manager , gdm user session)

Instalator: I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 seeing only upper left part of
the screen (1024x768 from 1920x1440) by clicking ENTER as next button.

usplash : I've changed /etc/usplash.conf to 1024x768 , add vga=791 to
grub.conf , and made sudo update-initramfs

gdm user session: I've used change resolution tool to make it 1024x768

gdm login manager: it's still 1920x1440

So, now when booting, first i can see white ubuntu logo i good
resolution , then I see this brown progress screen and login manager in
1920x1440, after provide login and password it's going to proper
1024x768 (brown progress and desktop)

1) After CTRL+ALT+F1 (F2 etc) i have screen with artefacts (lines in different
colors) , i'm sure its bad video mode.

2) Once CTRL+ALT+F1 got me into proper text mode, but only once and I
dont know why.

3)

Does making the above change trigger power savings ? Do you see any

Hi

Thank you for your answer. Here is the files in the directory
/var/log/dist-upgrade.

It seems it is the phpmyadmin package. At the end of the update, i do
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
Install all suspended packages

apt-get install phpmyadmin
  always failed

apt-get remove phpmyadmin

I do a: touch config.inc.php in /var/lib/phpmyadmin

and apt-get install phpmyadmin : It was successful

All seems ok now.

[Bug 481203] Re: Hardy 8.04.3 openssh does not forward X11 always cannot open display

2009-11-16 Thread Jose L. VG
X11Forwarding is ON:
...
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
...

And xauth is installed, when I connect (the first time or after removing
.Xauthority) I get:
/usr/bin/X11/xauth: creating new authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority

The Display variable is OK:
$ echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0

The port 6010 is listening (I guess this maps to X display #10):
$ netstat -pan |grep 6010
(Not all processes could be identified, non-owned process info
will not be shown, you would have to be root to see it all.)
tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:6010 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
-
tcp6   0  0 ::1:6010:::*LISTEN
-

I can even connect manually to port 6010:

OOOPps!

I got it!

I could do telnet 127.0.0.1 6010 BUT NOT telnet localhost 6010...

The problem was my /etc/hosts!!!
It was:
127.0.1.1 madcvd01lnx.rfranco.com localhost madcvd01lnx
Now I have fixed it to:
127.0.0.1 madcvd01lnx.rfranco.com localhost madcvd01lnx

And gedit starts up correctly.

What does 127.0.1.1 mean anyway? (I think that value was there in the defaul
config for /etc/hosts)
Does it have a reason or is it just an errata? Does it have anything to do with
IPv6?

[Bug 374900] Re: Libfaac not LGPL

2009-11-16 Thread markhaven
This is complete and utter nonesense. The referred code needs to be re-
instigated immediately. If the alleged IP owners ask for it to be
removed then it should be.. otherwise, why is it being pre-emptively
censored and on who's authority?

Even if patent/copyright exists - there are hundreds of implementations
of this particular code in numerous open source applications. The
supposed owners have made no recorded attempt to restrict use of AAC and
other codecs for the last 12 years. In addition, the MP3 and AAC codecs
pre-date the statement by a considerable time. All very mysterious

Anyone can claim they own the copyright to some code - have they
provided proof which has been independently validated?

Either way, this appears an obvious attempt to cripple ubuntu and
devalue Linux as a tool for media transcoding... An investigation of
who is behind these claims would be interesting...

[Bug 476603] Re: Multiple firefox crashes and flash loads CPU to max

2009-11-16 Thread Eddy
My problem is very similar to the original report of this bug. The web
page that usually causes this is www.manager.co.th. This page contains
some flash animation. Each and everytime I visit this page, I saw
npviewer.bin starting to consume a lot of cpu usage, making the whole
machine super busy. Since I am using a laptop, the fan starts blowing
like crazy pretty quickly after leaving it on the page for a little
while.

Something seems to be running too busily unnecessarily.

[Bug 425312] Re: NetworkManager does not recognize Option Fusion+ PCMCIA-card

2009-11-16 Thread GreDi
Hi all,

we have two problems here.

1* Network Manager bug with recognice UMTS device - still does not work
and
2* nozomi bug: ppp do not get IP even if I try to use gcom for registration
(this step working fine) and wvdial (but this step fail).

i get the same result as Franz Dietzmann wrote on 2009-10-06

Nov 15 21:45:49 hafalump pppd[25707]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
Nov 15 21:45:49 hafalump pppd[25707]: Using interface ppp0
Nov 15 21:45:49 hafalump pppd[25707]: Connect: ppp0 -- /dev/noz0
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: Connection terminated.
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: Modem hangup
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: Exit.

i'm not programer so... i can't help with Network Manager. But I know
how to make nozomi work with MSM6275 UMTS chip.

the solution is:
apt-get install linux-source
download linux-2.6.28.10 from kernel.org and unpack
cp linux-2.6.28.10/drivers/char/nozomi.c to
/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/drivers/char/nozomi.c
(sha1sum) abca84ad887bce7b1e6cdaf6e7c69fbed950b84f nozomi.c - this one is
working fine.
cp /boot/config-YOUR-UBUNTU-KERNEL-VERSION /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/.config
make
cp /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/drivers/char/nozomi.ko
/lib/modules/YOUR-UBUNTU-KERNEL-VERSION/kernel/drivers/char/

Now wvdial will be working fine.

[Bug 483473] [NEW] iron instead of chronium

2009-11-16 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

There is a ppa with builds for the google browser chronium:
https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily/+archive/ppa
I would suggest that instead of delivering chronium ubuntu should package iron,
which is chronium minus google spyware.

[Bug 424655] Re: Pulse audio memory leak

2009-11-16 Thread Christian Mertes
I seem to have a milder version of this. I'll attach an htop screenshot
showing pulseaudio to use about 2 gigs overall and 1 gig resident memory
after about three and a half days uptime. It's usually half that much
after a day I'd say, whether I use audio or not. Perhaps this is a
different issue but I've found no other bug report on this so far. Is
there an upstream report BTW or is this thought to be caused by Ubuntu-
specific patches?

I'll post the PA stats corresponding to the htop output below. I resist
having run PA in valgrind for a significant amount of time as this might
be required since the leak doesn't seem as large for me as for many
others. I'll do it though if required but the other valgrind logs don't
seem to have done any good so far so please let me know.
