[Bug 493100] [NEW] init.d/slapd script reports an error message that could be improved.

2009-12-06 Thread Adrian Custer
Public bug reported:

The end of the slapd script reports an error if there 'was no'
configuration files in /etc/ldap/slapd.d/ by equating 'fail to read'
with 'does not exist'. However 'fail to read' could be due to permission
issues such as a regular user calling /etc/init.d/slapd.

The error should be adjusted to reflect this is a 'fail to read' issue
which *may* be due to : 'does not exist' or to 'could not access'.

The error message could simply be expanded to include the possibility
that the user did not have access rights, or the script could be
improved to determine if that is the case and report a separate error.

thanks,
--adrian

I suspect the issue is general to all ubuntu install scripts but, if needed:
  Karmic 9.10 Amd-64
  slapd 2.4.18-0ubuntu1 (openldap)

Re: [Bug 493020] [NEW] vmbuilder: Deletes most of /dev on interrupt

2009-12-06 Thread Soren Hansen
On Sun, Dec 06, 2009 at 01:27:23AM -, Eric Hammond wrote:
I'm running vmbuilder on the latest EC2 Karmic AMI. When I Ctrl-C
interrupt the run, it deletes almost all of the devices in /dev making
 the system somewhat unusable.

Luckily, /dev is regenerated by udevadm trigger or a reboot. This
happens if for some reason unmount /dev fails, after which vmbuilder
tries to clean up after itself by removing the entire chroot directory
(including the bind mounted /dev). I'll take a look at this shortly.

Let me know if you are unable to reproduce this problem or need
 further information.

I would like the full debug log, if possible.

The presence of skip-bdb in my.cnf (and keeping existing config) prevented
mysql-server restart after upgrade, and made package upgrade fail.

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2009-12-06 Thread norton
I just wanted to add what I know.

On a Celeron D 2.53, 650i, 4 GB, I did not have this issue, or at least I
didn't notice it.
When I switched over to AMD X2 4800+, 780G, 2 GB, I began to experience this
issue.

For what it's worth, if I reboot warm, the issue only occurs about half the
time.
If I reboot from cold (power off and or AC all the way off), it reproduces
itself reliably.

The 0.0.0.0 address listed in the log someone provided earlier looks like a
clue.
So just for fun I set the network from DHCP to Manual fixed static IP, and now
several
totally cold boots later, nmbd runs OK all by itself without needing anyone to
hold its hand.

It's not a perfect solution, especially if you have lots of PCs to
manage, but for me it's fine.

My guess is that on a faster CPU maybe with multiple cores, there is a
serialization issue
where nmbd gives up just before DHCP has successfully set the IP address. I'm
just guessing
based on the single-core machine not really having this issue.

Thanks, btw, for the great OS, I shall not ever buy windoze again.

I can fix this problem.
Change /etc/default/ssh/ssh:

SSHD_OPTS=-4
This lets the ssh-server use onlyq IPv4.
After chaning this setting, you should restart ssh-server:

[Bug 493325] [NEW] mysqld crashes with large key_buffer (25G)

2009-12-06 Thread Brian Gehrich
Public bug reported:

I am running mysql on hardy (x86_64) with mysql-server-5.0 version
5.0.51a-3 ubuntu5.4. We have running this on aserver with 128GB of ram.
When we try to set key_buffer to 25GB, mysqld crashes with the error:

091206 16:41:45 - mysqld got signal 11;
This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this binary
or one of the libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly built,
or misconfigured. This error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.
We will try our best to scrape up some info that will hopefully help diagnose
the problem, but since we have already crashed, something is definitely wrong
and this may fail.

key_buffer_size=26843545600
read_buffer_size=10481664
max_used_connections=0
max_connections=10
threads_connected=0
It is possible that mysqld could use up to
key_buffer_size + (read_buffer_size + sort_buffer_size)*max_connections =
36802519 K bytes of memory
Hope that's ok; if not, decrease some variables in the equation.

thd=(nil)
Attempting backtrace. You can use the following information to find out
where mysqld died. If you see no messages after this, something went
terribly wrong...
frame pointer is NULL, did you compile with
-fomit-frame-pointer? Aborting backtrace!
The manual page at http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Crashing.html contains
information that should help you find out what is causing the crash.

Status in Samba: Confirmed
Status in “samba” package in Ubuntu: Triaged

Bug description:
Binary package hint: samba

Crash and core dump occurs in smbd on server when accessing Samba share in
XP Samba client.
Server is using AD credentials for XP users to access shares. As part of
this pam_winbind.so modules are specified in /etc/pam.d/common-* files.

Fault appears to occur in the static routine _pam_delete_cred() which is
located at line 2420 of the file
./samba-3.3.2/source/nsswitch/pam_winbind.c:
out:
if (logoff.blobs) {
wbcFreeMemory(logoff.blobs);
}
It appears clear to me there are two logic paths that lead to this memory
getting freed from a field in an uninitialized data structure (logoff).

Additional information about the system configuration is below.

[Bug 490380] Re: Please set option inherit owner by default on guest-enabled SMB shares

2009-12-06 Thread Thierry Carrez
Yes, by default in samba, files created by the guest user are created
under the account specified in configuration under guest account, by
default user nobody. Creating them under the rights of the owner of
the directory is introducing security risks that are not appropriate for
a default configuration, in addition to diverging from upstream
defaults. The use case of a totally unauthenticated writable share where
files are created under an existing account is valid, but not for a
default configuration. Setting guest account = fabio or inherit
owner in the configuration file seems appropriate in that case.

[Bug 493069] [NEW] Nautilus displays the space available on the local disk instead of cloud space in UbuntuOne folders

2009-12-06 Thread Francesco Castellana
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

When browsing UbuntuOne folders in Nautilus I expected the available space
reported on the status bar to be the one of my UbuntuOne account; instead
nautilus reports as available the free space on the home partition.
Not sure if it's a nautilus or ubuntuone-client bug; not a serious bug, either,

[Bug 491483] Re: after recent update which included xorg, xserver etc causes low-graphics mode error at start

2009-12-06 Thread Niklas Gidion
I have to report that this bug does also affect other login-managers (well, one
at least: Slim).
And I am using a Nvidia 9500gt video card - not an ATI. So it does not seem to
have much to do with the video card actually.

I had the same problem: After an update with the automated update-manager
yesterday and the following reboot I was left with the low graphics
mode-error.
_Sometimes_ clicking through run in low-graphics-mode for one session etc.
led me to my normal login (with Slim). And I would even get a running Compiz...
a bit surprising for the expected low-graphics-mode... but Compiz would
silently die sometime in between and leave me without graphic-effects.
Yet very often after reboot I was left without a login and only with scrambled
colors on top of the screen or, even worse, a crashed system with a black blank
screen where only turning power off helped!

I tried many possible solution-variations of tinkering with xorg.conf,
deleting and reinstalling the Nvidia-drivers etc. - all to no avail. I
was so sure that this had something to do with the updated kernel and
non-fitting or conflicting video-drivers...

But it was apparently a conflict between GDM and the other login-manager - in
my case Slim, not KDM.
Directly after deinstalling Slim and dpkg-reconfigure gdm the
low-graphics-mode problem is gone.

Seems to me its _not_ KDM or Slim who are having the bug.

[Bug 470604] Re: Window List buttons do not always respond to mouse clicks

2009-12-06 Thread Tycho Lamerigts
I have everything as standard as possible, no eye-candy. I have latest
nvidia drivers. I have dual-head setup. But, if GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS fixes
it, doesn't that mean the Window List code should simply be re-
compiled against a recent GDK library? If it's a compile-time problem,
that should pinpoint it really quickly. As for the upstreamness, I was
under the impression that I use Ubuntu so that I don't have to be aware
there is such a thing as upstream, let alone that I'd have to run around
posting bugs in every upstream project out there. Can Ubuntu pass this
on? Seems to have more clout that way too.

[Bug 418627] Re: [Regression] No sound in Karmic (HDA Intel ICH6 Realtek ALC260)

2009-12-06 Thread ex-oficio
after the latest kernel upgrade last week my sound has been behaving
erratically again.

retrinqueiro posted this on 2009-11-02:

*

- Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa
- Uncomment the line:

#load-module module-alsa-sink

- killall pulseaudio in a terminal and wait a bit until it respawns
(you'll know it because the mixer icon in the panel appears again)

*

i now have sound, but with odd symptoms regarding the little mute
indicator light (which is also a touch sensitive button) on my keyboard.
normally its orange when the sound is muted (or the sound is broken) and
blue otherwise. now, it is orange when no sound is playing (when there
are no applications listed as playing sound in the pulse preferences
dialog), and blue when sounds are being played! the button functionality
still works so its not so bad, but i keep seeing the orange light and
thinking the sound has failed again!

what was wrong with the sound setup in intrepid? can somebody explain
why we need pulseaudio? it has caused terrible sound issues with wine
and dosbox for me.

[Bug 403408] Re: Grub 2 problem, error: no such device

2009-12-06 Thread Jordan
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2009-12/msg00095.html

Has a possible fix for this bug. If I understand the patch correctly it
doesn't actually get search by UUID to succeed but makes it no longer a
fatal error. So rather than the menu entry failing, the search --fs-
uuid --set command will fail but allow the other commands to run. Since
root was set first by drive and partition number if those are still
correct then boot will succeed. There are two problems with this:

1: If you move your drives around then the hard coded device will be incorrect
and booting will fail
2: Since this is caused by grub not being able to read the entire drive due to
BIOS limitations, if you don't have a separate small /boot at the beginning of
the drive you could run into problems later on even if things are work
initially. For instance if you ever have a kernel update where the new kernel
happens to be stored past what the BIOS can read that kernel will fail to boot.
Similarly with a grub upgrade, with important files like the grub.cfg or
modules being written past what the BIOS can read, grub could fail to load
entirely.

But it's still better than the current situation. It is basically the
same as removing the search line for those with this BIOS limitation
while allowing search by UUID for those without. This is all only true
if I am understanding what the patch does correctly though :)

[Bug 493039] Re: The MP3 plug in not found even on internet unable to play MP3 songs its too boring without songs

2009-12-06 Thread Harry
Abhijit,
Have you tried to install the following metapackage?
Ubuntu-restricted-extras.
It will install the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, which gives
the mp3 support.

You can also check this with the Configuration Editor (gconf-editor).
Go to system/gstreamer/0.10/audio/profiles/mp3
See that the active box is checked.

[Bug 491856] Re: [965gm] xorg update results in blank screen on boot

2009-12-06 Thread Mütze
I have the same problem, with a different Intel Graphics Controller (see
attachment).

After adding 'i915.modeset=0 acpi=off' to my kernel cmdline (removing
quiet and splaxh), I am able to boot into a graphical environment. But
the xserver falls back to the VESA driver. I'm unsure, if I need both options,
I will test that during the next reboots.

I've noticed that grub2 does not display the default graphical boot screen.
But, since I've reinstalled Karmic due to this bug, which replaced an existing
old grub installation, I don't know, if that's due to this bug. I had to
uncomment
the 'GRUB_TERMINAL=console' line in /etc/default/grub.

I was thinking it could be stage 1.5 problem (the mbr itself perhaps
was unaffected, windows would write to those 30kb or so following the
mbr), but grub2 goes directly to stage 2 from what I've read.

GRUB 2 doestn't use anymore the same system as the stage* files in GRUB
Legacy.
It still uses the embeding area between MBR and first partition.
core.img is the file which ends up there and is much bigger then
stage1_5 from Legacy.
Because it not only contains the filesystem module to access /boot/grub
but also the GRUB kernel with the rescue mode.

 drive at all?

It only prevents use of the floppy device inside the search command,
which should be obvious.
Did you install GRUB 2 to a MBR of a different disk then /boot/grub is
on?
Check if `echo $prefix' or just `set' in GRUB's commandline shows prefix
as a normal GRUB device (hdx,y)/boot/grub or as
(UUID=abc123...)/boot/grub
If it's UUID= it can happen that it still accesses the floppy device.

[Bug 294092] Re: tg3 transmit timeout in Intrepid

2009-12-06 Thread david.barbion
Hi all,

I have same problem here with an HP NC6000 with the following broadcom network
adapter:
02:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705M_2 Gigabit
Ethernet (rev 03)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 0890
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
Memory at 9000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at 6c00 [disabled] [size=64K]
Capabilities: access denied
Kernel driver in use: tg3
Kernel modules: tg3

Here are my observations:
Sometime, the network link still up (ethtool confirm it) but input packages
seem discarded... in this case rmmod modprobe made it...
But sometime, the computer completely freezes (either magic sysrq doesn't
help)...

I saw also that it doesn't depend on packet size but on network bandwidth usage:
Full size packet in my lan causes that problem (~100MBPs), whereas full size
packet from internet works ok (~3MBPS)
MTU still at 1500 (when reducing this value, network is unresponsive)
Finally, I saw that sending and recieving packets causes lots of IO (what I
mean is that it takes remaining idle CPU).
Could it be an IRQ problem ? here is cat /proc/interrupts:
   CPU0
  0: 404858XT-PIC-XTtimer

where you can see IRQ 11 shared... wireless works ok.

[Bug 493083] [NEW] [regression] kmail in Lucid takes extremely long time to show window when restoring from system tray icon

2009-12-06 Thread David Bridson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

kmail in Ubuntu 9.10 worked for me fine. Typically, I have kmail in the
system tray icon which, when clicked, displayed the application full-
screen in ~1 second.

Since the upgrade to Lucid, kmail now takes (on average) 29 seconds to
display the window after clicking the system tray icon. During this
time, nothing is printed on the console (if I launch kmail from a
console) and kmail doesn't seem to take much (if any) CPU time and the
system isn't otherwise under heavy load (both cores of my CPU stay on 1
GHz out of 2.7 GHz).

Confusingly, when kmail is first launched from the Applications menu,
the window takes only a second or two to appear.

[Bug 492848] Re: Evolution email randomly shuts down

2009-12-06 Thread Dave Walker
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need the specific steps or actions you took that caused
you to encounter the problem. If we cannot reproduce the problem then
it will become much more difficult to fix.

Thanks!

[Bug 413227] Re: duplicated task titles on task manager

2009-12-06 Thread Mark Fraser
I'm seeing this too and it mainly seems to happen with Firefox. If I
load up Firefox, I'll sometimes get 2 icons in the task manager and
quitting Firefox leaves 1 icon left which I can't get rid of. I am only
running 1 desktop.

[Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic

2009-12-06 Thread gray
Just another comment: I was able to get the vob files onto the hard
drive and in Totem the vid played from the beginning, however when
dvdrip had finished encoding the avi file, the vid started at around 10
minutes into the vid.
