This does not occur on upgraded systems. I'll test again with the

[Bug 499491] Re: [1.6.2] Fails to boot an instance: Failed to add tap interface to bridge 'br0'

2009-12-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
Some help from upstream:
The log message indicates that either the interface 'br0' does not exist on
your node (i.e. the node has not yet been configured with a bridge named 'br0'
as it's primary interface), or that libvirt/kvm is unable to attach the tap
device that KVM creates upon VM start to that bridge (this can sometimes be
caused by apparmor getting in the way). I believe the right tactic is to first
check for bridge existence, then start inspecting apparmor/libvirt/kvm issues.

[Bug 499520] Re: default uec-image requires at least 300 M of RAM to run - m1.small and c1.medium not needed by default

2009-12-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
Two different issues here: the inflation of the minimal RAM amount
needed to run a lucid cloud image, and a redefinition of the default VM
types to better reflect the default use case. I think it's important to
keep the memory usage in our cloud images to a minimum if possible and
300Mb sounds quite large as a minimum to me.

I'll open a vmbuilder task to track the first issue, even if it's likely
not to be a vmbuilder issue, feel free to change the affected package
when the cause is better defined.

[Bug 499621] Re: nmbd fails to start after Jaunty upgrade to Karmic

2009-12-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
Could you attach your smb.conf to the bug ?

From the logs it looks like you're running with /var/samba/lock
instead of /var/run/samba for the state directory, which makes it
difficult to find /var/run/samba/messages.tdb. The locale-langpack thing
is a red herring.

[Bug 499811] [NEW] [1.6.2] Recent euca_conf changes break local key sync

2009-12-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
Public bug reported:

Some recent upstream changes in euca_conf break the local key sync.
Local registration now fails with:

ERROR: Cannot find source keys directory.
ERROR: failed to sync keys with 192.168.0.151; registration will not be
complete until keys can be synced, please try again.

euca_conf was changed in rev1105 to use SOURCEDIRS instead of SOURCEDIR,
but the local key copy code still uses SOURCEDIR.

Re: [Bug 499621] Re: nmbd fails to start after Jaunty upgrade to Karmic

2009-12-23 Thread Aidan Dixon
Changing lock directory fixed it. Bug closed.

Strange - I have been running that same version of smb.conf (attached)
since 8.04 without issue but it was originally imported from a Solaris
system which had a manually-configured Samba build (3.0 I think).

Thanks, Thierry and happy Christmas!

Best regards,
Aidan

I concur... this is a problem that should have been fixed by now. When I

connecting to the target system after placing the key in the

Note: This must be done for each and every shell opened on the host.

[Bug 497258] Re: vmbuilder fails when adding package 'ubuntu-desktop'

2009-12-23 Thread Peter Matulis
I did add a sync to the following file

/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/VMBuilder/disk.py

Here

def umount(self):
self.vm.cancel_cleanup(self.umount)
if (self.type != TYPE_SWAP) and not self.dummy:
logging.debug('Syncing')
run_cmd('sync')
logging.debug('Unmounting %s', self.mntpath)
run_cmd('umount', self.mntpath)

But there is a umount happening before that function is called.

I ran vmbuilder in debug mode and here are the pertinent messages:

So, as suggested, I did run lsof:

$ sudo lsof -R /home/ubuntu/Data/tmp/vmbuilderYt3CgM/root/proc

COMMAND PID PPID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
dd808 1 root0r   REG0,30 4026531987 /proc/kmsg

lsof21109 31948 root6r   DIR0,301176729 /proc/21109/fd

So dd (with init as parent) is to blame.

Then:

$ ps ax | grep -w dd
4 0   808 1  20   0   8192   604 syslog Ss   ?  0:00 dd bs=1
if=/proc/kmsg of=/var/run/rsyslog/kmsg

Kernel messages appear to not have finished flushing to disk.

I decided to try a sleep in this file

/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/dapper.py

Here

def unmount_dev_proc(self):
import time
time.sleep(360)
run_cmd('umount', '%s/dev/pts' % self.destdir)
run_cmd('umount', '%s/dev' % self.destdir)
run_cmd('umount', '%s/proc' % self.destdir)

But this did not help.

[Bug 499491] Re: [1.6.2] Fails to boot an instance: Failed to add tap interface to bridge 'br0'

2009-12-23 Thread Thierry Carrez
Bridge br0 exists, apparmor doesn't get in the way... it's coming from
something else.

New test:
Alpha1 install 1.6.1: PASS
Upgrade remaining system to current, reboot: PASS
Dist-upgrade system to current, reboot: FAIL

The dist-upgrade picks up the following updates / new packages:
initramfs-tools 0.92bubuntu55 - 0.92bubuntu62
initramfs-tools-bin NEW - 0.92bubuntu62
libplymouth2 NEW - 0.8.0~-6
libpng12-0 NEW - 1.2.41-1
linux-headers-server 2.6.32.7.7 - 2.6.32.9.9
linux-headers-2.6.32-9 NEW - 2.6.32-9.13
linux-headers-2.6.32-9-server NEW - 2.6.32-9.13
linux-image-server 2.6.32.7.7 - 2.6.32.9.9
linux-server 2.6.32.7.7 - 2.6.32.9.9
linux-image-2.6.32-9-server  NEW - 2.6.32-9.13
mountall 1.1 - 2.2

Rebooting, selecting 2.6.32-7 - still FAIL
Reverting initramfs/mountall update, rebooting on 2.6.32-9 - PASS

So this is apparently coming from the recent mountall/initramfs-tools
update, though I haven't time left to investigate more *why*. Adding a
mountall task to track this.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2009-12-23 Thread definingmoment
Adding domain info to /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf should fix this issue.
This file will add domain info to /etc/resolv.conf (and will work with
or without VPN). Use the following steps:

1.) At the terminal enter sudo gedit /etc/hdcp3/dhclient.conf (without quotes)
2.) find the line #supersede domain-name fugue.com home.vix.com;
3.) remove the # sign at the front of the line to uncomment it.
4.) add your domain names to the line, i.e: supersede domain-name
mydomain.com workdomain.com;
5.) reboot

[Bug 500009] [NEW] floating point exception when Windows NT 4 guest uses its cirrus driver

2009-12-23 Thread James Cave
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

The emulation for the Cirrus Logic adapter in QEMU seems to be broken;
when Windows NT 4 tries to test the display using the cirrus compatible
display adapter driver, QEMU dies with the error Floating point
exception.

Ubuntu Version: 9.10
qemu-kvm version: 0.11.0-0ubuntu6.3
KVM: not installed
Guest OS: Windows NT 4.0 SP1
QEMU command line: qemu -m 96 -soundhw all -net nic -net user -localtime -cdrom
WindowsNT4.iso nt_ii.hdd

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start to install Windows NT in QEMU.
2. Proceed until Setup shows the Display properties dialog; confirm that
Windows has detected a cirrus compatible display adapter.
3. Click the Test button.

Expected behavior: NT displays a test pattern, allows confirmation of display
properties, and finishes setup installation
Actual behavior: QEMU closes; the terminal output is Floating point exception

[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2009-12-23 Thread Paul Smith
I'm not sure why you think retrieving domain info from the DHCP server
will do anything to help the problem, which is that the Ubuntu DHCP
client is overwriting the resolv.conf file and replacing nameservers
that were added due to VPN connections.

[Bug 396564] Re: grub2 shows 'biosdisk read error', then boots

2009-12-23 Thread Brett Howard
Just to add my 2 cents... I was seeing this error and got here because
I was having problems booting after I'd intentionally degraded an array
to replace a disk in it. It was this error that got me here.

After reading through this I tried the idea mentioned to disable the
floppy drive that was enabled in the BIOS but not connected to the
motherboard and now I no longer have this error.

For those who are interested the reason why I wasn't booting was because
my mother board (Asus P5K Pro) doesn't have the primary master / primary
slave on SATA ports 1 and 2. They are 1 and 3. So /dev/sdc was
actually the Secondary Master drive like one would assume but the
secondary master drive is plugged into SATA port 2. Thus I get to
restore my array onto that drive (will take about 3 days) and then I can
start intentionally degrading the proper drive. Ug!

Anyway thanks to those here for telling me how to remove this error
(which really wasn't a bug at all).

[Bug 479296] Re: Karmic: frequent freezes

2009-12-23 Thread Magnus
I have (had?) this problem as well. But for the last month or so I have not
seen it.
I haven't done anything special really. The only thing I can thing of that
could have affected this is that I once pushed a bit on my graphics card.
I seemed to be completely in its socket, and I could not feel it move. But
after that I have had no more of these freezes...

This bug is mostly because of NM and not a kernel level fault.

I can verify the same.
(using opensuse 11.2 with nm 11.2 . there is no problem)

[Bug 457220] Re: [ooo-build] [i386] OpenOffice crashes when saving .doc file with notes in it, Karmic.

2009-12-23 Thread JedMeister
I think I am also experiencing this issue (or one with a very similar
symptom). The cause seems to be different so I'm not 100% sure. For me I
have been working on a .doc (that was created with Ooo3.1.1 on WinXP)
and have just added a Ooo Draw drawing and on saving it crashed. It
saves fine in .odt or .docx

I am using Karmic i386 with standard (latest) Ooo3.1.1 (OOO310m19-Build:9420)
[openoffice.org-core 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1]

I too am interested in testing the upstream build but have no idea where
to get it from either. Anyone help us out here?

[Bug 328163] Re: USB unstability on AMD 790FX chipset

2009-12-23 Thread ^_Pepe_^
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest Karmic 9.10 release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If the issue remains, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal) while running Karmic. It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report.

apport-collect -p linux 328163

Thanks in advance

[Bug 499235] Re: Can't attach Canon A430 camera via USB to Dell Zino HD

2009-12-23 Thread Brian Candler
UPDATE: I got the Canon camera to work, by unbinding ehci as per the
instructions at http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Benutzer/BigMc/Tascam_US-144

That is,
# echo -n :00:12.2 | tee -a /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind
# echo -n :00:13.2 | tee -a /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind

Of course this means I only get USB1 speeds, but at least it works.

So the problem seems to be likely to do with the USB2 controller on the
Dell Zino HD (since I observe similar problems with both the Canon
camera and the Sony Ericsson phone)

At least I can give you decent lsusb -vv output while the camera is
connected now.

Strangely, even after rebinding ehci, the camera works. However the

if some of you can degrade the network manager then try this solution.

unfortunately i dont know how to degrade the network manager. (tried and

[Bug 499734] [NEW] v4l-conf returns bogus values using DGA

2009-12-23 Thread Michael Hunold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xawtv

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, v4l-conf is 3.95.dfsg.1-8.1ubuntu1.

v4l-conf: using X11 display :0.0
dga: version 2.0
mode: 1280x1024, depth=24, bpp=32, bpl=28, base=unknown
can't open /dev/video0: No such file or directory

The output of bpl (= bytes per line) is totally bogus, it should be 5120
instead.
This confuses my Video4Linux2 driver and makes overlay video non-working.

I recompiled the package from source and could trace the problem down to
displayinfo_dga() in console/v4l-conf.c.

static void
displayinfo_dga(Display *dpy, struct DISPLAYINFO *d)
{
#ifdef HAVE_LIBXXF86DGA
[...]
XF86DGAGetVideoLL(dpy,XDefaultScreen(dpy),(void*)base,width,foo,bar);
[...]
d-bpl  = width * d-bpp/8;
[...]

width is returned to be 7 and d-bpp is 32, so d-bpl will be
calculated as 28.

If I just put #if 0 around this function, v4l-conf will behave correctly,
because displayinfo_x11()
function correctly identifies bpl as 5120, but unfortunately will be outvoted
by displayinfo_dga().

So I guess there is a problem with DGA support for my graphics card. It's an
on-board
AMD 780G Gigabyte GA-MA78GM UDH2 mainboard.

[Bug 467785] Re: suspend hangs in Karmic Koala

2009-12-23 Thread dannyor
This happens repeatedly on my Sony Vaio. After coming back from suspend the
green light turns on but the machine hangs. I have this problem ever since I
upgraded to karmic. I seriously consider falling back to 9.04. It is quite
agitating to have to shutdown the laptop instead of suspend.
Does anyone know of a workaround?

[Bug 483451] Re: Ubuntu fails to load after white logo splash screen.

2009-12-23 Thread ricardisimo
Something - and I don't know what - changed the the default num in my
menu.lst. I had set it to 4, so that 2.6.31.14 would always load, and it
was changed back to 0 at some point, by one or another update, I have to
assume. As I described, the newer kernels will not load. Don't know if
it's pertinent, but there you go.

Is anyone even looking into this? Is anyone there? Hello?

By the way, is there any way as to get this fix to decrease the screen
brightness system-wide (like what the screen brightness hotkeys are
supposed to do)?

And thanks heaps for the fix, Syarif :-D

[Bug 392948] Re: LCD Brightness won't Change - Acer 4736z

2009-12-23 Thread Vignesh
I also have the same problem on a Toshiba T110/00D. It has the Intel
Mobile 4 Series Chipset and graphics (more specifically Intel GMA
4500M).

The fix somewhat works, but I can't decrease/increase brightness of
panel/cairo-dock, because they still remain bright. There's also the
problem that when a pop-up window comes up, and when I open up a new
window, that also remains at full screen brightness. But these are minor
quibbles, as I can finally reduce the screen brightness :-D

I really do hope the Ubuntu devs get this fixed up too :-D

[Bug 499737] [NEW] duplicate detection for video files doesn't work

2009-12-23 Thread Brian Candler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

I have a Canon PowerShot A430 which can take video (AVI) as well as
photos.

When attaching the camera a second time, duplicate jpegs are skipped but
the AVIs are re-imported, with xxx.avi becoming xxx-1.avi

[Bug 405190] Re: Nvidia Driver install stops Wireless working

2009-12-23 Thread ^_Pepe_^
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest Karmic 9.10 release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If the issue remains, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal) while running Karmic. It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report.

apport-collect -p linux 405190

Thanks in advance
