[Bug 16918] Re: smartcard support is not enabled in openssh

2009-12-25 Thread Jean-Michel Pouré
I have been using Debian GNU/Linux for 10 years.
I really need smartcard support to secure my SSH and StrongSwan communications.

As written before, smartcard are really secure technologies.
You can buy used smartcard readers on eBay for less than 10 euros.

So please add smartcard support to Openssh.

By the way, most of us only need --with-opensc and opensc libraries so
why beg during years for such a common feature.

2009-12-25 Thread Kees Cook
Ah-ha! I suspect it's recent changes to the initramfs that continues to
reduce the modules-needed-for-boot, which left out tun. I was able to
solve this by just sudo modprobe tun before attempting to start an
interface. Hint found at:

[Bug 395314] Re: gdm 2.26 appears on wrong monitor

2009-12-25 Thread YitzchokL
I'm adding my comment here rather than to the Gnome bug tracker because
I don't have an account there, and here I can reference Ubuntu versions

According to lspci my graphics card is
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7300 GS] (rev a1)

On Jaunty the login prompt always appeared on the primary monitor
(left). On Karmic (upgraded on-line today 25/Dec/09) the login prompt
seems to be dependent on the mouse position as described above. I seem
to recall that the mouse always was in the middle of the two screens,
just to the right.

Interestingly at the point at which you have to put your mouse on the
main screen to get the login prompt to appear there, you can't actually
see the mouse pointer on that screen; it seems to be hidden by the
Ubuntu splash screen.

[Bug 164793] Re: Logitech MX610 mouse special functions doesn't work

2009-12-25 Thread ChosenOne
The mouse is a bit strange - it has two logical interfaces for the USB
receiver/transmitter. They are on the same plug, but they are treated as
separate devices by the Linux USB subsystem. The first USB interface is the
normal mouse device - it has the X/Y motion, the normal buttons and the
scrollwheel. The five buttons down the left edge (Vol +, Vol -, Mute, Email and
IM) are on the second interface, which probably has the additional features
like battery status as well as the indicator LEDs for Email and IM.

[Bug 498534] Re: can't connect user with low UID

2009-12-25 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Lucid amd64 20091222.1 iso booted via grub loopback from hd was the
first iso where I was presented with a login screen but could not login.
20091221 was the last iso with which I was able to get to the desktop
just fine.

Based on this report I have now tried to add a new user via useradd on
the console. The new user got uid 1000 and was able to login. The user
ubuntu had uid 999.

Seems like this could be the same bug. I am however also wondering about
bug 495304 because after adding my user the login also automatically
presented a list which it had not done before.

[Bug 500316] [NEW] Needs support for apport hooks and config

2009-12-25 Thread Philip Peitsch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-distutils-extra

I'm writing a custom app, and want to make use of the apport bug
reporting system (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport/DeveloperHowTo) to allow users to log
bugs directly to launchpad using the application.

To do this, I need a way of making the project install apport config
files in /etc/apport/crashdb.conf, and apport hooks in /usr/share/apport
/package-hooks/binarypackagename.py or /usr/share/apport/package-
hooks/source_sourcepackagename.py. This would be useful to get as

[Bug 500321] [NEW] Thunderbird segfaults, gdb says file format not recognised

2009-12-25 Thread marker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

In Ubuntustudio 9.10 using thunderbird 2.0.0.23+build1+nobinonly-
0ubuntu1, attempting to launch thunderbird fails like this:

  $ thunderbird

  (thunderbird-bin:11442): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple
times
  Segmentation fault
  $

Using the -safe-mode to disable plugins makes no difference.

I tried the debugging procedure from the wiki, and when I start gdb it
says, /usr/bin/thunderbird: not in executable format: File format not
recognised

Thinking that perhaps the executable had been corrupted, I did an apt-
get remove --purge thunderbird then apt-get install thunderbird and
tried again...

  $ thunderbird -safe-mode

  (thunderbird-bin:12124): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple
times
  Segmentation fault
  $

This time, I can see the thunderbird window open momentarily before it
fails, unlike before, but gdb still won't recognise the file format.

[Bug 96991] Re: (Needs radeon-rewrite) 3D stuff breaks with Compiz: Redirected Direct Rendering is needed in DRI

2009-12-25 Thread Reynaldo Matos Hortensi
Hi Extender,
I have tried with xorg-edger drivers and radeon.modset=1 kernel parameter...
everything worked fine but googleearth (ATI Radeon Xpress 200, chipset RS482).
Glxgears worked fine (I can move the glxgears window without artefacts on
screen).
Googleearth have produced artefacts (see attachment).
I will be back with number for glxgears and gtkperf.

[Bug 500325] [NEW] icon size setting does not honour KDE setting automatically

2009-12-25 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

This bug concerns the KDE-adaptions of openoffice.org, may be gnome to,
I do not know. In a fresh installation the icon size is set to big.
This setting lets openoffice ignore the standard icon size of KDE from
systemsettings. I believe the setting should be automatically. Then it
adapts to whatever is set in systemsettings. I believe this is the best
configuration, also if used in a gnome environment. (Note: The debug
information contains my settings, where I have already changed the
settings, therefor it is very useless, I did not know how to remove it).

[Bug 500327] [NEW] CD-R DVD-R burning fail in Brasero

2009-12-25 Thread mozartomaniac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

i am jaydip from india. i am new to ubuntu. i am using 9.10. i am
experiencing problems with brasero while burning cd-r and dvd-r. it only
burns the folder names then comes the message finalising and the
cd.dvd is spoiled completely. in this way i have wasted a number of
discs.

the disable full windows compatibility and rename for full windows
compatibility options create mess.

but my friend who suggested me the ubuntu is using 8.10 and his system
is running smoothly. he also has dual operating system. xp+ubuntu.

so this problem must be fixed as soon as possible. it's a major problem.

[Bug 500268] Re: performous does not include content (songs, ...)

2009-12-25 Thread Lasse Kärkkäinen
The only songs that Debian (and thus Ubuntu) could ship are the ones of
the libre package. We prefer the users being told to go online where we
offer downloads to a lot of songs rather than having three songs
preinstalled (in which case the message telling to go online is not
displayed).

Does this answer your concerns?

[Bug 491329] Re: jackd cannot be started in realtime mode on Karmic if there is not enough free space in /dev/shm

2009-12-25 Thread Jonas Norling
I experience what appears to be the same problem on my laptop with a USB
sound device.

I'm running Karmic. Pulseaudio is enabled but the USB sound device is
set to profile Off in the Sound Preferences GUI, so pulseaudio
shouldn't try to use it (right?). Pulseaudio is allowed to manage the
laptop's internal sound device, though.

Immediately after logging in, pulseaudio has created (around) five 65MB
files in /dev/shm, but only a total of 224kB is actually allocated/used:

jo...@bruno:~$ ls -lsh /dev/shm/
total 224K
4.0K -rw-r- 1 jonas jonas 4.0K 2009-12-25 13:20 mono.5866
 84K -r 1 gdm gdm65M 2009-12-25 13:20 pulse-shm-3132421645
 32K -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:22 pulse-shm-3183276808
 12K -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:20 pulse-shm-3321423159
 80K -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:22 pulse-shm-3424433770
 12K -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:20 pulse-shm-586544485

When I try to start jackd, pulseaudio starts to fill up its previously
sparse files in /dev/shm. After a few seconds and a lot of swapping
jackd exits with Bus error and my /dev/shm is completely filled:

jo...@bruno:~$ ls -lsh /dev/shm/
total 232M
   0 drwx-- 3 jonas jonas 60 2009-12-25 13:22 jack-1000
4.0K -rw-r- 1 jonas jonas 4.0K 2009-12-25 13:20 mono.5866
 84K -r 1 gdm gdm65M 2009-12-25 13:20 pulse-shm-3132421645
 65M -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:22 pulse-shm-3183276808
 65M -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:20 pulse-shm-3321423159
 39M -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:22 pulse-shm-3424433770
   0 -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:22 pulse-shm-448440592
 65M -r 1 jonas jonas 65M 2009-12-25 13:20 pulse-shm-586544485

All this happens only when I have @audio - memlock unlimited in my
limits.conf (otherwise jackd says that it can't allocate memory, but
seems to work happily anyway). Sometimes not enough pulseaudio clients
are running to fill up /dev/shm and jackd will start fine. My preferred
workaround is to start jackd on the console before logging in.

My system:
512MB RAM,
USB sound device: ESI U46XL
Ubuntu realtime kernel linux-image-rt 2.6.31.9.10
pulseaudio 1:0.9.19-0ubuntu4, jackd 0.116.1-4ubuntu2

with current karmic some of my scripts fail that use dmsetup and were
working correctly under jaunty.

Several dmsetup commands fail with

e.g.

[Bug 444449] Re: Firefox slow google reader

2009-12-25 Thread Pierre Poissinger
Ok - I did some tests:
* Using nv driver: CPU problem does not occurs, to bad it's non-bling-bling.
* Using nvidia proprio driver: Problem does occurs.. (I am using 173.14.20 to
get correct powermizer behavior aka force-underclocking)

Some notes:
* Xorg eats a full core (99%) - sysprof gives nothing except '???'
* Moving firefox window (when open on reader) gives CPU xorg spikes (WTF? with
compiz on ?)

So, playing around, I found out that the following command (obviously only
applicable with nvidia...)
$ nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=1
fixes the CPU usage for reader - added to gnome-session and I can enjoy my FF
again...

Hope this helps...

[Bug 478754] Re: 9.10 Server i386: Installation step failed .. failing step is: Select and install software

2009-12-25 Thread Ernst Rohlicek jun.
I seem to be in the same situation - installation fails in select and
install software step.

Boot from CDROM, tried in expert mode and in normal mode.

It says that something has failed - it only showd the failed command
... the whole dpkg output in a text field would be great in such an
unexpected case.

Anyways, created debug logs and entered the shell.

The last entry I saw failing was the linux-headers-2.6.31-pae package so
I ran the command it showed me in the error window during installation:
chroot /target --install --force-...something /media/cdrom0
/[...]/linux-headers-2.6.31-[...].deb and ran that command there in the
shell.

To my astonishment, it gave up with the following:

~ # df

... which in my opinion makes no sense.

Only thing I could think of are too strong or unlucky compilation flags
for dpkg or the running kernel or file system code, something I had
sometimes in a custom-compiled Gentoo system.

Will try to attach my full syslog output I transfered out via USB
storage.

[Bug 500336] [NEW] VLC Fullscreen does not cover the taskbar in KDE 4.3.4

2009-12-25 Thread juustomuna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

In VLC, VLC Fullscreen does not cover the taskbar in KDE 4.3.4.

1) Ubuntu release: Kubuntu Karmic 9.10, with KDE 4.3.4

3) After going to fullscreen, the taskbar should be hidden

[Bug 500208] Re: repeated crash in uxa_copy_n_to_n+0x74a

2009-12-25 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for reporting this bug. We need 3 more pieces of information:
1. Could you test the new ubuntu version (Lucid) to verify that it also happens
there? You can download alpha1 from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/
and a recent daily image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/ .
2. We need a full backtrace. The one that appears in Xorg.0.log is something
like a summary backtrace. A full backtrace contains more information about
exactly what goes wrong. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for more
information about how to obtain a full backtrace (preferably with Lucid).
3. We need some log files to identify your system. The easiest way for you to
provide this is by running `apport-collect 500208` (again, preferably with
Lucid).

[Bug 500327] Re: CD-R DVD-R burning fail in Brasero

2009-12-25 Thread mozartomaniac
cd/dvd burning failure is a major problem in ubuntu 9.10. it is due to the two
options before burning the data cd/dvd-r.
RENAME FOR FULL WINDOWS COMPATIBILITY DISABLE FULL WINDOWS COMPATIBILITY
both options create problems.

these options were not present in ubuntu 8.10. so please rectify the
problem with an update of brasero as soon as possible. so that the user
don't have to switch over to windows xp for burning cd/dvds.

[Bug 500105] Re: x freezes in ubuntu 9.04 on using OOo

2009-12-25 Thread Pauli
Few things that could help in problem. You need to add configurations to
/etx/X11/xorg.conf to Configured Video Device section. You can find
more etailed info what can be put there using man radeon in console.

1. Disabling DRI (Option DRI off)
2. Disable AGP by enabling PCI mode (Option BusType PCI)
3. Change AGP speed to 4x (Option AGPMode 4)
4. Using old XAA acceleration (Option AccelMethod XAA)
5. Have ssh connection to system when it freezes to collect information from
dmesg, xorg.log and openoffice/xorg trace logs. ssh connection recuires you to
install ssh server which allows secure remote login to your machine. More
details about ssh can be found from
https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/openssh-server.html and strace info
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Strace. You most likely want to write the strace output
directly to a file in your second machine which won't freeze.
6. Trying to stream the kernel log to another machine in lan using net console.
This might reveal the error message that you can't red locally. But I have
small doubt that there might not be anything to see. But if you want to try
here is link to the kernel parameter documentation:
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/networking/netconsole.txt

I think that some of these freeze problems has been fixed in Karmic too.
If you don't want to try the upgrade you can use newer graphics driver
from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=jaunty

I think this bug has a workaround in Bug 441161 but I am too much of a
newby to understand the instructions. which part is terminal code and
which just information? How do I check that solution applies? I seem to
have module b44 but my wireless was only disabled after update.

[Bug 434568] Re: [Karmic] Lenovo SL500 volume up/down and mute keys don't work

2009-12-25 Thread michalzuber
At http://gianlucamagalotti.wordpress.com/2009/02/16/lenovo-thinkpad-sl-
series-hotkeys/ is the solution.

Karmic comes with tetronimo module but it does not load it…. Simply go
and edit the /etc/modules file and add the lenovo-sl-laptop at the end
of the list. Automagically all buttons will work again.

Simply edit /etc/modules and add line lenovo-sl-laptop.
To try it simply sudo modprobe lenovo-sl-laptop ;)

2009-12-25 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Shang Wu,

This isn't a but since it's possible to change the sorting order in the GQview
status bar from sort by name to sort by number.
When setting sort by number you get the correct image sequence.

be reported in new bug report (unless it is already reported in some newer

Glxgears worked fine (I can move the glxgears window without artefacts on
 screen).
Googleearth have produced artefacts (see attachment).
I will be back with number for glxgears and gtkperf.

[Bug 500350] [NEW] WLAN card did not work after resume from standby

2009-12-25 Thread Kevinban
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Merry Xmas every one.
My notebook is a Dell E6500 series. It's bought about one week ago. Recently I
found after resume the PC could not find the WLAN connection under My network
Places and CMD shows WLAN media disconnected. I tried ipconfig/renew command
in CMD and got result as No operation can be performed on Wireless Network
Connection while it has its media disconnected.

PS: Actually there are no LAN or Wlan connections either in My network
Places. I found RPC locator services is Mannual under start type
and it stopped. Then I set this started then there is LAN connection is
cable is plugged. However, If I set auto under start type then the
PC will display blue screen with error:0050. ( Well, that's why I
called Dell the king of blue screen ). Is this something related with
the WLAN problem?

Thanks in advance!
