Re: [Bug 512777] Re: first login fails when NIC is managed by NM-wicd
Hi Static IPs: Some friends have the same config working on a static network since some 2 years (Debian Etch IIRC). With karmic they report it's working as long as they use wicd: but they are unable to use NetworkManager (no logon servers). They are now planning to migrate all the school within a 2 months deadline so it seems they feel happy. I could get a syslog from them if needed. DHCP: tried on another machine with samba package installed, so smbd and nmbd appear on syslog too. I tried the four combinations of lines/no lines about eth0 on /etc/network/interfaces and managed = false/true on /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf. Two of them (managed = false) follow below. I guess this covers the two usual scenarios. Behaviour is always the same in all four cases. No wicd tests done. It seems that, with any config, and even if everybody gets fired up just in time, dhclient does not finish before samba daemons start. I hope you can see the causes I'm unable to see. After some googling, it seems that there is a NETWORKWAIT option on RedHat that goes in /etc/network/interfaces equivalent, but I'm unable to see any mention about it on .deb-based distros. I know this is a samba bug report, but does anybody knows about it? Funniest thing is, if you wait some 30 seconds after gdm appears on screen, you can login at first attemp; if you don't wait, first login fails (?) Second login attempt always work. Syslog snippets follow, I could send corresponding samba logs with loglevel = 3 if needed. Hi Thierry, On Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 07:49:18AM -, Thierry Carrez wrote: The NC additional preseed (downloaded from the CC) contains the CC host eucalyptus public key, which is generated at CC host install time. So your preseed would probably miss that. I'd add a late_command that would automatically provide a well-known public/private key for the eucalyptus user to all installations. Granted it's not the safest thing to do, but for testing purposes it would help (this is what I do in the puppet recipes). Could you explain the use case for installing, with the UEC installer, a NC in a cloud without CC ? You'd be better off doing a regular server install and choose the cloud node task, if you want to bypass what eucalyptus-udeb does completely. I'd rather fire off all systems to install what they're supposed to be and not rely on having the systems to be installed in specific sequence: 1. Install CLC 2. Once CLC is installed, install CC+SC, install Walrus 3. Once CC+SC is installed, install all NCs. Automating the installation of multiple systems as a sequence is harder than firing off all the systems at the same time and wait for the infrastructure to settle (thanks to auto-registration). The main usage of the option is to facilitate automated testing. There doesn't even need to be a question asked. [Bug 513655] [NEW] every time fontconfig trigger is run, vte color scheme goes wrong in all my terminals
Public bug reported: On just about every upgrade of my lucid desktop, and sometimes more than once within a single update-manager run, the color scheme on all of my gnome terminals will suddenly switch from light gray on black to light gray on white. To reset this, I have to go into the profile, and under background, toggle from 'solid color' to 'background image' and back. This is not specific to gnome terminal; other users of vte, such as update-manager's own terminal widget, are also affected - I just have no easy way to restore the sane color scheme there. Studying the terminal log carefully, the glitch appears to correspond to the firing of the fontconfig trigger, calling fc-cache -s -v whenever a font is updated. However, I was unable to reproduce this when running fc-cache -s -v directly, possibly due to the cache being up-to-date - and not thinking far enough ahead, I rm -rf'ed the cache instead of moving it aside, and was *still* not able to reproduce the problem, so I may have destroyed my only reproducible test case for this. :/ Still, there's a bug somewhere in vte that I'm managing to trigger. All of the information in that log file relates to that working package, not the package that was causing your problem. As such, I am closing this bug report. [Bug 513666] [NEW] screen not locked on suspend or hibernate (screen saver not activated)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace KDE 4.3.95, Lucid Lynx Alpha 2+. I find that KDE on Ubuntu will not lock the screen when I suspend to RAM or hibernate to disk, if I initiate the action from within KDE. However, if I press my laptop's Fn-key suspend-to-RAM combination, the screen saver is activated and the screen is locked upon resume, just as it should be. In the latter case, just before the machine is suspended, I get a reassuring notification about the screen saver being activated. In the former case, that notification is missing. I have tried the same version of KDE on openSUSE 11.2, and there the screen saver is activated properly. My login manager is KDM. How to reproduce: 1) Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. 2) Select Suspend to RAM from the Turn off Computer submenu. (Just before the machine goes to sleep there should be a notification about the screen saver being activated.) 3) Wake up the machine after it has been suspended. Expected behavior: The screen saver should be running. A password prompt protects against unauthorized access. Actual behavior: The screen saver is not running. There is no password prompt. Re: [Bug 501196] Re: player won't play bbc radio listen again programmes
Thank you for the response Tommy. Actually, this wasn't the only problem I had after upgrading to Karmic. Firefox kept crashing. I reported this bug and got a message asking me to report it using apport. When I did that I got an error message telling me to upgrade tzdata. When I did that I fried my hard drive. Currently the affected pc won't boot up. I'm going to have to use the Karmic disc to attempt to retrieve my files. I have another desktop running Karmic which is also buggy. Ultimately, I think my solution to the problem is to do a fresh install of 10.04 from a disc, butn in the meantime I'm travelling for 6 months, so I won't be doing anything until June. Karmic was not a success from my point of view. 2010/1/28 Tommy Trussell tommy.truss...@gmail.com Hi -- I just saw your reported bug about mplayer and I tried opening the url in a terminal as you specified: $ mplayer rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/radio4fmcoyopa/radio_4_fm_-_tuesday_1656.ra and it works on my machine. (Funny -- I was looking at bugs like yours because mplayer crashes on this machine when I click the icon. But now I believe I know why.) There are other packages that are installed at the same time as mplayer that could have caused the crash. I would suggest you might try reinstalling mplayer and/or make sure it has what it needs to decode RealAudio streams. I briefly had the Medibuntu repository on this system and it could be that an updated package came from there. You might have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu and see if you want to try using it. (By the way, the earlier comments about your bug report were because you accidentally collected data for the terminal program itself and not the mplayer program. If you open mplayer and use System Monitor you can find the process ID of mplayer while it is running. Then you can use apport- bug ID to collect the data from mplayer. [Bug 259496] Re: battery drain during hibernation
I had the same problem with my X61 and judging from various reports around the Internet, this seems to be rather common (even with Windows). I believe that some parts of the system are not completely shut down when hibernating through ACPI. For instance, the network card remains active (don't really know, if this is the BIOS' or Ubuntu's fault). Fortunately there appears to be a simple workaround: You have to switch from hibernate via ACPI to a complete shutdown (that is from platform to shutdown in/sys/power/disk): echo shutdown /sys/power/disk or for a more permanent solution, if you are using sysfsutils: Add the line power/disk = shutdown to /etc/sysfs.conf. Another possibility should be (I haven't tested that): Add a file to /etc/pm/config.d (f.i.: /etc/pm/config.d/99thinkpad_workaround) containing: # Works around the battery drain on thinkpads when hibernating # through ACPI. HIBERNATE_MODE=shutdown Interestingly enough, I have HIBERNATE_MODE=shutdown in /etc/default/acpi-support, but that doesn't seem to have any effect on pm-utils (which are used to to the actual hibernation). Could you confirm that this works? Maybe we should forward the solution to the pm-utils guys. Brian, Are you working on the 845GM mainly or do this work for the 855GM? The previous package did not improve the freezing in my case. Thinking this behavior was a generic KDE bug, I filed an upstream bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224517. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 457147 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/457147 I performed the steps you described, but the files you asked me to attach don't exist. I let UbuntuOne run for 5 mins or so, then copied 3 files, waited another couple of minutes. I assume it's just not logged anthing...? If you would like to help debug the problem that would be greatly appreciated. You can do the following in order to provide important details that will help determine the root cause of this issue? 1) Quit the Ubuntu One client 2) Open Applications-Accessories-Terminal, then run the command: mv ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log_old mkdir ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log 3) Open (or create if it doesn't exist): ~/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf Add the following 2 lines to this file and save: [__main__] log_level = DEBUG 4) Restart UbuntuOne Applications-Internet-Ubuntu One 5) Let Ubuntu One run for a bit, copy some files into your Ubuntu One Folder. Then attach the following logs to this bug: ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon.log ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log /syncdaemon-exceptions.log The issue you are having with logging into the web interface is a known issue and the Ubuntu One Team is working on it as we speak.
