2010-02-04 Thread Otto Berger

Dear Chuck,

The reason is that the user you were running the command does not have
permissions to set the speed of the device.

right, but should'nt the package take care of this? i wonder why the
status is still won't fix?

Quite possible, the students are instructed to create a key called
'mykey' in the exercise. With this the problem can be reproduced:

$ euca-run-instances -t c1.medium -k mykey2 emi-DF481077

[Bug 343738] Re: vsftpd max username length too small

2010-02-04 Thread Kenny Millington
I'd like to double check this again before confirming hardy PAM is ok
with usernames of this length but unfortunately I seem to have
lost/deleted the test VM where I had this issue setup.

I'll re-create the VM and re-test this issue just to be sure (give me a
couple of days or so depending on workload).

(Unless ofcourse Trent can provide such a confirmation.)

[Bug 512887] Re: Restarting libvirtd breaks Eucalyptus NC

2010-02-04 Thread ariel
Great, thanks!

BTW, shouldn't this issue be reported upstream, to fix the NC to not loose the
socket?
Fixing eucalyptus-nc.upstart will handle the case of a civilized restart by
the sysadmin, but not if for instance the libvirtd dies and gets started by
hand with /usr/sbin/libvirtd -d right? and also only in Ubuntu ;-)
Should i report it upstream, or does it get forwarded automatically, or does
somebody else care?

[Bug 517067] [NEW] Using virtio for block devices makes disks and partitions disappear in KVM/QEMU (using vmbuilder and libvirt)

2010-02-04 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libvirt-bin

I can reproduce that trying to use bus='virtio' for virtual disks in the
definition of a libvirt domain makes virtual disks thus defined
disappear in the eyes of KVM/QEMU. This leads to error messages like the
following when booting, as well as disappearance of all partitions on
that virtual disk, except for the root partition (that means especially
that no swap space will be enabled):

One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted:
(ESC for recovery shell)
swap: waiting for /dev/sda2
/opt: waiting for /dev/sda3

A screenshot is available here:
https://daff.pseudoterminal.org/misc/mountfailed.png

It also appears, just after starting the guest, that QEMU doesn't even
recognize that there are hard disk drives present, it only sees the DVD
drive. See the following screenshots for comparison.

bus='ide' in virtual disk domain definition:
https://daff.pseudoterminal.org/misc/bus_ide.png
bus='virtio' in virtual disk domain definition:
https://daff.pseudoterminal.org/misc/bus_virtio.png

The result is that only the root partition, probably because of
initramfs/initrd and GRUB magic, will be available to the guest when
using virtio, and only when no partitions other than a swap partition
have been defined during setup or installation of the guest. When only a
swap partition is present the boot process succeeds but still complains
that it is waiting for the swap partition to become available. When
there are any other partitions the boot process just hangs with the
error message described above.

Background: I like to take advantage of the paravirtualized IO drivers
offered for KVM-based guests. Using virtio as bus for block devices or
model type for network interfaces in the right places in a libvirt
domain definition enables those drivers. To facilitate and automate this
when creating guests I edited the libvirt template for vmbuilder to
automatically use virtio. Notice the target line:

#for $disk in $disks
disk type='file' device='disk'
  source file='$disk.filename' /
  target dev='vd$disk.devletters()' bus='virtio' /
/disk
#end for

Now for creating a guest using vmbuilder, as per the Ubuntu Server
Guide:

# vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --dest=/storage/vms/foo -m 2048 --rootsize=4000
--optsize=4000 --hostname=foo --suite=karmic --bridge=br0 --overwrite
--libvirt=qemu:///system --flavour=virtual --arch=amd64
--mirror=http://host:/ubuntu

Here a root and an /opt partition are defined, both 4GB in size. Swap is
defined automatically and defaults to 1GB. This works fine and results
in the attached foo.xml libvirt domain definition. In particular the
disk definition looks like this (again, notice the target line):

disk type='file' device='disk'
  source file='/storage/vms/foo/disk0.qcow2'/
  target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/
/disk

This is what the libvirt and KVM documentation pages suggest. After
starting this domain the results are as described above, i.e. either a
hanging boot process or a missing swap partition.

When changing the target bus definition to bus='ide' everything works
correctly. The domain boots as expected and contains all partitions
defined during setup. This has been completely reproducible for me and I
can switch between a working guest domain and a non-working by changing
bus='virtio' to bus='ide' in the domain definition.

This is on a Ubuntu Server Edition installation. I have no idea if this
is a libvirt problem or a problem with KVM or QEMU or something else
entirely. More information follows and please also see the attached
files. If there is anything else I can provide please tell me.

[Bug 475354] Re: Hostname not set correctly on UEC cloud due to IP address in local-hostname manifest data (DNS)

2010-02-04 Thread Disconnect
Any time you say the images should work around.., that means that
UEC's EC2 compatibility is -broken-. UEC should return a text hostname
(ip-a-b-c-d? instancename? no-dns-you-loser.euca-a-b-c-d? whatever.) in
the hostname field. Regardless of configuration. The spec you are
claiming compatibility with -insists- on that.

The iterator would be nice (that is what we would have used in our
installation), or even a sprintf-style configurator, but that is
(reasonably) a wishlist request.

We put numbers where the spec -requires- text IS A BUG.

[Bug 517086] [NEW] euca-create-volume fails at times with Error communicating with Storage Controller

2010-02-04 Thread Torsten Spindler
Public bug reported:

Happened on the Ubuntu training cloud with Ubuntu 9.10.

For testing purposes for training I create 32 volumes with the following script:
for i in $( seq 1 32); do sleep 5; euca-create-volume -s 1 -z classcloud; done

After creating these I remove them with:
for vol in $(euca-describe-volumes | cut -c8-20 | xargs); do euca-delete-volume
$vol; done

I regularly see this error
Volume: Error communicating with Storage Controller:
CreateStorageVolume:Internal Error.

I run the two scripts four times with these results:
first run: 31 volumes created
second run: 29 volumes created
third run: 25 volumes created
fourth run: 25 volumes created

I counted the volumes with
euca-describe-volumes | grep avail | wc -l

As the last run was completely without the error 'Volume: Error
communicating ...' something else is hindering the volumes from being
created as well.

[Bug 253937] Re: Local login fails without LDAP server

Same thing here on Ubuntu 9.10.

Here is a (possibly) relevant nss_ldap thread:

Unfortunately, that thread ends with I am looking at fixing this now and
providing some time outs on the soft

In my opinion this is an important bug. One of the major reasons for

Re: [Bug 253937] Re: Local login fails without LDAP server

2010-02-04 Thread Etienne Goyer
Derek Simkowiak wrote:
In my opinion this is an important bug. One of the major reasons for
using LDAP+nss is for high availability in corporate networks... and
 this bug breaks that completely.

You are starting with a wrong assumption: using nss_ldap will not
provide you with any type of high-availability. In fact, it may have
the opposite effect, as authentication becomes dependent on the
availability of network and LDAP directory service.

That being said, the bug is not really one; it is more of an
architectural shortcoming. And it is not specific to Ubuntu: any Unix
(including pretty much every other Linux distributions) that implement
NSS as stateless library is bound to have the same problem. NSS was
written as an abstraction layer that assumed the database, traditionally
file such as /etc/passwd, are always available and cheap to query.
These assumptions break down when the database had to be queried over
the network.

There is no proper fix, outside of ripping off NSS entirely for
something new (which is not practical, as you can guess). All you can
do is to mitigate the problem. Tweaking the various limit in
/etc/ldap.conf is useless; even very short timeouts do add up. nscd,
which is buggy as hell anyway, will block the second it has to query the
network database because it does not keep state in the first place.

The only solution that can provide some relief is to have a daemon sit
between the library and the network database to cache network queries
and to keep state of the network database. And continue to return
results without blocking when it is not, unlike nscd. Solaris had such
a thing for quite some time, with good results. In Ubuntu, the
libnss-ldapd and sssd package, and the nssov slapd overlay, provide just
that. I have not experienced with any of them, so I cannot make an
enlightened recommendation, but they all tries to address exactly the
problem being discussed here. I suggest you investigate them, and
reports bug you find along the way.

 Bug description:
UEC images use the local-hostname setting of the manifest data to set the
hostname. On Eucalyptus that appears to be set to the local ip address -
which doesn't work properly as the hostname obviously stops at the first
 period it sees.

Hence you have a lot of machines starting up with hostname '172'...

Additionally /etc/hostname isn't altered by the ec2-init processes.

The default hostname in the manifest data should probably be a combination of
the availability zone name (clusterid) and the local/public ip address as
 appropriate.

so local-hostname should be for example: isp-lab-172-19-1-30 and
 public-hostname should be isp-lab-10-99-67-9

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 513735] Re: [arm] needs porting to thumb2

2010-02-04 Thread Xerxes Rånby
@Dave
Here comes the answer to if we can use -marm explained by jyasskin on #llvm
If you put a CallInst in your LLVM IR whose target is an llvm::Function, and
that Function is an external declaration (i.e containing no BasicBlocks), then
llvm will try to use dlsym() to look up the code for that function.
If, however, you first call ExecutionEngine::addGlobalMapping(f,
some_real_function), then the JIT will emit calls to some_real_function(...)
instead.

So we will have trouble fullfill the 1.a condition that external
functions should only be called via C++/high-level code which is part of
llvm itself since the JIT will call these functions directly.

If the JIT runs openjdk shark then it will call jni code directly, make
direct calls to libjvm.so.

Some clarification to your guess I'm guessing that the JIT output is ARM code
only (not Thumb):
It turned out that the LLVM switches on the thumb backend by default since it
have autodetected the host system to be a
Host: thumb-unknown-linux-gnueabi

The current implementation of the llvm thumb backend currently works
well when using llvm as a static compiler to create assembler files:

But dont work so well when used for the ExecutionEngine JIT since the
thumb backend happen to lack specifications for how to generate machine
code fore all the thumb instructions. It currently only know what
instruction it wants to use but then hits an assertion that the
specification for the machine code are missing: This bug are tracked
upstream http://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=6223

example: see attached file for differences between the static
compilation and jit using llc and lli with thumb/tumb2 emission.

[Bug 492883] Re: Brother HL-2170W [PCL XL error]

2010-02-04 Thread Till Kamppeter
Can you try a live CD of Lucid? There a lot of fixes were applied to the
pxlmono (PCL XL) driver.

Try also to choose the Brother HL-1030 as printer model, using the hl7x0
driver. This driver uses Brother's proprietary printer language. Perhaps
it works also with your printer.

[Bug 117884] Re: xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse

2010-02-04 Thread Timo Jyrinki
I agree. Many universe packages like blender, me-tv, xine, even gimp-
plugin-registry depend on this, and having it in multiverse causes these
not possible to install if one chooses not to use multiverse (like I do,
because otherwise some truly non-free software might get installed
easily).
