[Bug 522819] Re: Loosing connections with Connection reset by peer message

2010-03-08 Thread Thierry Carrez
Re: background image, not background download:
I was assuming this changing Hubble background image was downloaded from
somewhere on the Internet. So you mean there is no download, it's changing
background image over a set of locally-installed images, and that started to
fail as well ?

[Bug 534271] [NEW] eucalyptus-nc-publication keeps on respawning when shutting down NC

2010-03-08 Thread Thierry Carrez
Public bug reported:

When shutting down an NC, the shutdown is delayed by multiple
eucalyptus-nc-publication job respawns.
The job should probably be stopped on switching to runlevel 0,1 to avoid that
issue.

I suspect the same issue is plaguing all publication jobs that use
respawn.

[Bug 534273] [NEW] Compile with Linux AIO support

2010-03-08 Thread Bernhard Schmidt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

qemu-kvm has a faster method of doing I/O on Linux called Linux AIO.
According to my tests and the upstream maintainer
(http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.kvm.devel/cutoff=48050) it
is faster and should not cause any problems.

It is enabled by configure automatically if libaio-dev is added to the

Hi

I can't run vmlinux (uncompressed) kernels with qemu-system-arm; they
just hang on boot. vmlinuz ones (bzImage).

I can however kexec vmlinux kernels just fine.

This was tested under versatile.

I'm running it as follows:

[Bug 524893] Re: Can't boot initramfses

2010-03-08 Thread Loïc Minier
Reopening the bug since:
- the patch was just a workaround to support the RAMDISK method, but doesn't
fix initramfs support
- it actually doesn't work even with the patch :-(

qemu-system-arm -m 256 -drive file=lucid.img,media=disk -M versatilepb -cpu
cortex-a8 -kernel
linux-image-2.6.32-16-versatile_2.6.32-16.24/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-16-versatile

It might be that our vmlinuz is so big that it clobbers the initramfs
space on unpack; I can't load vmlinux though (bug #534324) so can't
easily confirm.

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking

2010-03-08 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I'm sorry, this is not something that we can solve in the qemu-kvm
package that is in Ubuntu Main.

Why not? The standard Ubuntu kernel supports capabilities
(CONFIG_SECURITY_FILE_CAPABILITIES). It is obviously not desirable to
have qemu networking broken by default, or to tell users that they must
run qemu as root if they want networking to work. I'd imagine that most
people installing qemu would prefer that the qemu process be able to
create a TUN/TAP device instead of returning some odd error message.

You could, I suppose, submit a patch that adds another binary package
under the qemu-kvm source package that we put in Universe.

It seems odd to create a new package just to fix networking for non-root
users.

I've subscribed the Ubuntu Security Team. I'm curious for their
opinion on this.

From a security perspective, it is obviously better to give the qemu
process a single relatively harmless capability than to require all
users run qemu as root or suid root.

[Bug 523148] Re: virsh console does not work (/dev/pts/1: Permission denied)

2010-03-08 Thread Jules LD
Yes I think you are true. But the Debian bug (debbugs #567818) in
relation to this bug is the same. Maybe I could try to report my bug as
a new one?

I already check the xml configuration of my VM. Apparently, this path is
created directly by the hypervisor when the VM is started. I tried to
set up it in the configuration file with virsh edit, but libvirt
didn't commit the modification (even if the VM is not started).

And apparently, this bug is fixed in libvirt 0.7.5
(http://libvirt.org/git/?p=libvirt.git;a=commit;h=c0a9b6a5338e54b64a4a28415ffbdb6bcc2b38c5).

enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

2010-03-08 Thread Imre Gergely
Thanks for reporting this problem.

As far as I can tell, you did an update from 0.95.3+dfsg-1ubuntu0.09.04~hardy2
to 0.95.3+dfsg-1ubuntu0.09.04~hardy2.2. But it seems like the 'clamav' user
does not exist, and the postinst script of clamav-freshclam gave an error
because of this.
Could you check if you have the user clamav on your system? Try runinning the
command id clamav from a terminal. Did you by any chance remove the 'clamav'
user?

[Bug 532733] Re: apt/dpkg in qemu-system-arm hangs if a big task is installed

2010-03-08 Thread Oliver Grawert
sadly all versions of qemu system-arm expose this in lucid ...

over the weekend i tried all qemu.-system-arm binaries we have in the
archive going backwards in history up to the first karmic version ... i
also tried the versatile kernel we used to use in karmic (which worked
fine during karmic for i.e. installing the ubuntu-desktop task)

i'm solwly starting to suspect that something in the lucid userspace
causes these disk I/O hangs, i will:

a) do some tests building a karmic under lucid userspace now
b) start a script in a qemu arm VM under lucid that will do endless loop
reading/writing to see if it hangs at some point

[Bug 532733] Re: apt/dpkg in qemu-system-arm hangs if a big task is installed

2010-03-08 Thread Oliver Grawert
note also that the VM itself doesnt hang, its just the disk IO ... if i stop
the hanging process teh VM is usable as before.
if you want to reproduce install rootstock and run:

sudo rootstock -f test -s ubuntu-netbook^
(note that wont give you any access to the VM, try the thing below for this)

or to have more debugging abilities use rootstock to create an armel
qemu minimal install (with username test and password test):

sudo rootstock -f test -s ubuntu-minimal -l test -p test --keepimage

then run qemu-system-arm as described at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RootfsFromScratch and install the ubuntu-
netbook task with:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook^

[Bug 534412] [NEW] VNET_PRIVINTERFACE is not set correctly in a multi-network install

2010-03-08 Thread Thierry Carrez
Public bug reported:

Installed the following topology:
( CLC+Walrus )---network1---eth0( CC+SC )eth1---network2---( NC )

Everything installed and auto-registered correctly. I registered an image and
started it with success.
However it's impossible to access that instance (from the CLC or from the CC),
trying to ping the private address or the public address of the instance fails
(unreachable).

I traced it back to VNET_PRIVINTERFACE on the CC+SC, which is set to
eth0 in eucalyptus.conf (should be eth1).

eucalyptus-udeb.finish-install calls set_conf_var to set VNET_PRIVINTERFACE,
however since it's not present in eucalyptus.local.conf, the sed call won't
modify it:
sed -i s/^\\($1\\)=.*/\\1=\$2\/

Setting it to eth1 and rebooting seems to solve the issue.

I can confirm this. Hit it this weekend trying to install guests on
32-bit karmic host.

Why would you mark this incomplete unless someone can confirm it on
lucid? That's a data point, sure, but it's still badly broken on karmic.

Karmic is closed for development, whereas Lucid is still open for
development. There's very little if anything we can do to fix this in
Karmic at this point. Lucid, on the other hand, we still have a few
weeks of fixes that can land. If someone wants us to spend development
effort to solve this for Lucid, we need the bug confirmed there.

This is not a development issue, it's a support issue. You have a memory
corruption bug (or something similar) in 32-bit kvm on Karmic, which is
supported until April 2011. This bug should be marked confirmed,
severity upgraded, and taken seriously.

[Bug 532682] Re: instance stays in pending for 1 hour, then to terminated

2010-03-08 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Dan-

This is the issue you and I looked at on Friday.

I believe we decided that Eucalyptus was blowing up somewhere during the
image decryption, and then the cloud/database worked itself into a nasty
state.

We restarted eucalyptus several times, and eventually we were able to
register the very same images that were failing.

I'm assigning you this bug, as you said this was something you needed to
discuss with Chris.

This bug is marked High and Confirmed because it's blocking Scott's work
on creating/verifying Lucid UEC images.

[Bug 533423] Re: package clamav 0.95.3 dfsg-1ubuntu0.09.04~hardy2.2 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

2010-03-08 Thread dgermann
Imre Gergely and Chuck Short--

Thanks for responding to me so quickly!

It seems to be working now. Here is what I did:

Somewhere I found the instructions for creating the user clamav and did
that. It did not allow me to complete the install. I had no reason to
remove that user, so no idea how that could have happened. All I did was
run the update manager.

Somewhere else I found that the fix might be to uninstall and reinstall
clamav. I did that from Synaptic, No go. Then I did a purge and
reinstall via Synaptic. Still no go. Then I did the purge and reinstall
again, but did not install clamtk. That worked. Then I installed clamtk.
That worked. I checked logs this morning and it does seem to be running.

Your command resulted in:
d...@doug2:~$ id clamav
uid=115(clamav) gid=129(clamav) groups=129(clamav)

If that looks OK to you, it looks OK to me.

Thank you for being so responsive, Imre Gergely and Chuck Short!

Imre--

I don't know if the user was there before or not. I tried to remember
how to find the user, but could not, so went into the process of
installing and reinstalling.

In case it helps, I do not recall getting any error messages when I created the
user doing this:
sudo adduser --system --no-create-home --disabled-password --disabled-login
--shell /bin/false --group --home

Thanks, Imre!

[Bug 522819] Re: Loosing connections with Connection reset by peer message

2010-03-08 Thread GregoryHuey
Well, here is something strange. The machine in question is on the
network via a Network Manager, connection eth0 home. eth0 home is a
static-IP configuration for eth0 - the device IP, its netmask, router,
DNSes, etc are all given explicitly in Network Manager for this
connection. The IP is supposed to be 69.12.176.91. However, I noticed
that instead the IP was 69.12.176.95. This is last IP of the 8-IP
allowed range on my home network. It is what dhcp would have given, I
think. But, I verified dhclient is not running - killall dhclient
yields dhclient: no process found. I also verified that in Network
Manager, the active connection is eth0 home under wired networks.
There is no way the eth0 IP should have been 69.12.176.95. I
disconnected eth0 home, and then reconnected it (under Network
Manager), and the IP went to 69.12.176.91. The problem with my machine
dropping connections - ssh logins to remote hosts - seems to have
stopped. I have now gone 12hrs without a dropped connection (ie: the
Read from remote host isildur: Connection reset by peer). So there is
nowtwo questions: How did this happend? and How would it cause the
dropped connections?

I do use dhclient when I use this laptop with WiFi networks, and also
one wired network - but never for my home network, eth0 home, which is
where this problem was happening - and dhclient was not running. How did
the IP get set to the wrong value? Does hibernate thaw kill a running
version of dhclient when it shuts down the network connection(s)? If
dhclient survived a hibernate thaw, could it have changed the eth0 IP,
then exited, leaving no trace that it was responsible?

Even so, simply having the wrong IP on eth0 shouldn't cause the network
connections to be periodically dropped, or so I would think. The only
issue I can imagine is that hostname reports fingon.cosmology.name, and
nslookup of fingon.cosmology.name yields 69.12.176.91. Could having the
wrong IP for one's hostname cause network connections to be dropped? I
would not think so. But, clearly something strange buggy is going on.

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks,
Greg Huey

This is something we are not going to fix in karmic. If you install PHP
5.3 and expect modules from karmic to work then you will have to
recompile your own modules. Basically you are on your own.

Rebuilt a new 9.10 server (from which this bug report is from) and had
the same thing:

Mar 8 13:10:48 opssrv7 kernel: [ 3923.432132] sshd[888]: segfault at 38

Both boxes are VM's. Also there are a number of automated ssh connections
(using keys) into the boxes, about 9,000 per hour. I'm trying to replace a much
older non-ubuntu vm box with OpenSSH_3.7.1p1 that for years had the same ssh
traffic without issue.

I commented out the follow two modules from /etc/pam.d/sshd in order to
reduce the sshd overhead but that did not make any difference, sshd
still dies after some amount of time and has to be manually re-started.

# Print the message of the day upon successful login.
#sessionoptional pam_motd.so # [1]

# Print the status of the user's mailbox upon successful login.
#sessionoptional pam_mail.so standard noenv # [1]

[Bug 60478] [NEW] Missing files for qemu-system-ppc

2010-03-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: qemu

Althought the qemu package (version 0.8.0-3ubuntu1_powerpc) includes the
qemu-system-ppc command for emulating PowerPC machines, it doesn't work
because of a few missing files.

First of all, it's missing a ROM image. The file
/usr/share/qemu/ppc_rom.bin is a symlink to ../openhackware/ppc_rom.bin,
but this file does not exist. It can be gotten from the openhackware
package from Debian, but this package does not seem to be in Ubuntu, nor
is it a dependency of the qemu package.

Secondly, when the ROM image is installed, qemu-system-ppc complains
about a missing VGA BIOS, which it looks for in /usr/share/qemu/video.x.
However, that file does not exist. On other distros, it's apparently
part of the qemu package.

Marking invalid against the qemu-kvm userspace, and in-progress against
the kernel. Looks like Stefan has this in hand.

Stefan, can we get this into the next kernel build (if it's not
already?)?

Okay, the testdrive part of this is fixed.

But kvm-ok should improve it's hint to include the kvm_(intel|amd)
module that needs to be included.

I'll get this uploaded.

[Bug 40189] Re: autofs needs to be restarted to pick up some shares

2010-03-08 Thread fejes
I am experiencing what I think is the same problem in 10.04. It wasn't
a problem in any of the versions prior to this on the one machine, but
an upgrade recently caused this to affect ~50% of cold boots.

It's not difficult to solve - once the failed login happens (home is not
mapped), I go to one of the terminals (crtl-alt-F1), and issue:

sudo /etc/init.d/autofs reload

After this, I can switch back to the KDE/Gnome prompt and login through
the graphical prompt, which is now crtl-alt-F8.

[Bug 429443] Re: /usr/bin/kvm-ok should be disassociated from kvm

Changing the affected package to procps, as Kees has agreed to accept
kvm-ok there.

Attaching a debdiff that puts the utility in debian/kvm-ok for now, and
installs it to /usr/bin/kvm-ok.
