[Bug 427701] Re: OpenVPN client always runs
I verified that if you don't explicitly drop a configuration in /etc/openvpn, OpenVPN won't start anything. So the default is satisfying: if you have openvpn installed and don't do anything with /etc, nothing happens, nothing is started, nothing conflicts. If you add a configuration in /etc/openvpn, then it will be started at boot, unless you change the default behavior in /etc/default/openvpn. I fail to see where openvpn behavior is breaking alternative front-ends, since they don't (shouldn't) touch /etc/openvpn. Could you explain that ? Marking as invalid for papercut, since the bug is incomplete and solution is no longer obvious. ** Changed in: server-papercuts Status: Confirmed = Invalid ** Changed in: openvpn (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Incomplete -- OpenVPN client always runs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/427701 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openvpn in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking
Kees: I know about the wiki page - I'm the one who edited it to note this issue. It is not true that file capabilities only work in Lucid - I am using Karmic and it works fine. libcap2-bin is also not a PAM package. It is also not true that you need to manually add users to /etc/security/capability.conf. I will corrrect these points in the Wiki. It is true that with CAP_NET_ADMIN capability any user could boot a VM and gain access to a virtual ethernet device. That's the whole point. I would assume that the majority of people installing qemu would actually want to be able to create bridged virtual ethernet devices. VirtualBox allows normal users to create bridged ethernet devices that could be used to disrupt networking. Why should qemu be different? If you are concerned about users directly abusing the capability with their own software then this is not possible - giving the qemu binary the capability means that only that binary gets the capability - other binaries executed by the same user do not get the capability. Access to /dev/net/tun can still be controlled using standard file permissions as usual. Using a file capability would obviously be preferable as it would not require individual users to be manually assigned the capability, and could be done in postinst and would survive qemu package upgrades. The only way someone could disrupt the network in this way is if they: 1) Were allowed to run qemu 2) Had rw access to /dev/net/tun 3) Had some exploit for qemu to allow them to run some arbitrary network disrupting code Basically, whatever potential problems there are, the same problems are also present in VirtualBox, and yet that ships with working network bridging for VMs (the mechanism is different, but the fundamental problems are the same). Why can't qemu have working bridged networking? Why not create a tun group that has rw access to /dev/net/tun if that is the problem you are trying to avoid? And if making the existing package work is unacceptable, then why not create a qemu-kvm-working-bridged-networking package and recommend that users who want bridged network use that instead? -- qemu no tun/tap networking https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/103010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking
@Chris Yup, I understand how capabilities work. I'm actively working on getting fscaps functioning with Debian/Ubuntu packaging (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/FilesystemCapabilties). (You seemed to miss me changing ep to ei in the wiki -- I've added the old instructions back and clarified the procedure.) Just because qemu claims to only work on tun/tap devices doesn't mean it can't be subverted into working on arbitrary network devices. In a perfect world, upstream qemu will create a helper tool that is uses fscaps, etc, and correctly manages the tun/tap devices before launching qemu itself. That reduces the exposure of CAP_NET_ADMIN and makes for a more auditable chunk of code. I'll leave it up to the qemu maintainer in Ubuntu how to handle these things, but I just wanted to confirm that arbitrarily giving everyone CAP_NET_ADMIN (or being setuid root) via qemu was not preferred. If it's done via file permissions and a qemu-runners group, plus fscaps =ep, or done via fscaps =ei and select users are given =i via pam_cap, I don't much care. :) Regardless, fscaps are not supported in Debian/Ubuntu packaging (which I very much want to fix), so this is all a non-issue until that is solved. In the meantime, I feel it is my responsibility to provide as safe a set of instructions that accomplishes the goal of accessing the tun/tap devices.

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking
http://wiki.qemu.org/Features/HelperNetworking We plan on addressing this upstream by introducing a helper to create the tap device. This helper would be owned by root, and would be limited in what it did with the tap device (in terms of attaching it to a bridge). The configuration process of bacula-director-mysql then failed because the mysql server was not yet started when bacula-director-mysql tried to configure the database: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2). unable to connect to mysql server. [Bug 532286] Re: Samba: remote Win XP and Mac OS X machines can no longer mount shares
could you place a Linux system in that 192.168.1.0/24 network and reproduce the trace? Good call, Thierry! I was certain that the linux machine would be able to connect from 192.168.1.0/24, but was shocked to discover that it doesn't. A trace of the packets shows the same lack of response from the SMB server. This lead to a few more tests indicating that the problem must be that the ISP is blocking incoming port 445 traffic. Normally I would have suspected this, but in this case I have Windows XP users on another subnet for which this was working right up until the day of the system upgrade, and didn't work subsequently. Since (presumably) nothing changed on their end during this 3-day period; i.e. no new ISP, no new firewall, same Windows XP machines, I assumed the problem must be with the server. Since I've subsequently been able to mount shares from a Windows XP machine on a different subnet, this can't be the problem. I still don't have an explanation for why the TCP SMB connection was working for the actual Win XP users prior to the upgrade from Debian to Lucid, but not after. Please mark this bug as Invalid with my humble apologies!! Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba smbclient has the ability to give both username and password in the -U as 'username%password' for automated logins. I have tested this on Samba servers from those releases and also Ubuntu 8.04 (3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.10). [Bug 534773] Re: postfix configuration failures should not let 'stop' fail
It works if /etc/mailname is non-empty, I know that. The problem is: you can't simply uninstall postfix if you have a configuration problem like that. The pre-removal package script fails because the daemon can't be stopped and the init script gives an error. This is unfortunate as non-technical guys are left with a postfix which doesn't work but they can't to the 'apt-get remove (--purge) XX', 'apt- get install XX' or 'apt-get install YY' they've been told to try by some more geeky friend;-) It might be nitpicking, but fixing should be more or less simple and make the Ubuntu experience just that little bit better. I understand that stopping postfix in an 'orderly fashion' (from the manpage:-) is a priority, but stopping the deamon is triggered by some human action and meant to succeed. And there's the 'abort' action supported by the init script, too. My take would be to kill the postfix process if 'quiet-stop' gives an error. -- postfix configuration failures should not let 'stop' fail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/534773 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to postfix in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 524147] Re: UEC NC failed to fetch preseed.conf from CC using lucid-server-amd64-20100218
Okay, I found a suitable workaround, at least, for the lab testing ... Simply ensure that all systems are powered off before starting a new run. I suspect the reason I hit this was because I had deployed a topo2 setup (with a standalone CC). Then I setup a topo1 installation, which has a CLC+WC+CC+SC on cempedak. But mabolo was still running with a CC, broadcasting its cluster name. Which confused things. Clearly we need to fix this bug. [Bug 522819] Re: Loosing connections with Connection reset by peer message
Yes, 69.12.176.95 is the broadcast address for my home network. I don't have a good idea what would happen if one attempted to use the broadcast address for the IP of a machine, but I imagine it might have problems like dropped connections. Ok, that might be half the mystery. The other half is how/why did Network Manager set the IP on eth0 to the broadcast address instead of 69.12.176.91 (which is static)? I'm paying close attention now to what the IP on eth0 gets set to when I enable eth0 Home under Network Manager. So far this problem has not repeated.
