[Bug 557890] [NEW] transfer lockup connecting to a NetApp/CIFS share
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba Mounting a CIFS share off an IBM N3300 filer (== NetApp FAS 2020), I experienced some file managers, applications, ... to more or less regularly lock up / don't do anything while trying to browse folders. Looking more into this, it seems the problem is more basic. It happens once in a while copying things off the filer using the shell, and it happens almost reliably when browsing to the share using any visual file manager. On a): what I meant here is not that libvirt should catch all cases of itself disappearing, but rather that the other daemons don't have a rm on the .pid file; I didn't check what the other daemons to, I guess they are checking for a running process with that pid and whether it's the same program before aborting, and overwriting the pid file otherwise. It just strikes me that we don't have rm /var/run/program.pid in the other upstart jobs, and it's something which should be dealt with by the upstream logic, isn't it? Also I just tried my own CLC/Walrus preseeded install on a cloud-in-a-bag laptop, and it reboots alright. See attached preseed. However there is definitely some tricks involved around disk order detection in netboot (partman shows the only disk as /dev/sdb -- SCSI2). Thanks for the research, Loic. The logic is perfectly sound, to me. I wholeheartedly agree that the upstream daemon (or whatever creates the bloody pid file) should clean up the damn thing. But as you said, for Lucid, we probably shouldn't go mucking about in the daemon's internals. This has been fixed in 2.2.16 by enabling the module mod-reqtimeout. It has been enabled by default in the next release in Debian already. I think this is an important fix for lucid that should be necessary. I have attached the debdiff and build log. I have ran ab against it and it has not affected my server. I see in the web UI that the disk size for this type of VM (small) is 5Gb. Is that it? IIRC, I at one point had it set to a lower value, but then the VMs wouldn't start, so I changed it to 5Gb a while ago. then you should have swap, so what did you mean by they don't have swap? I mean the instance only has the RAM I gave it (256Mb) and no swap enabled, i.e., the output of free shows zero for swap. It may be that there is just a missing swapon. Ok, I found the source of this problem. Its really a dupe of bug 341006 , or at very least, a fix to that bug that addressed the MAC addresses used by UEC would make this problem go away. The reason there is no output after the kernel in the console above is that upstart is quietly waiting for eth0 to come up, but it never will because /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules has given 'eth0' to a device attached in the bundled instance. So, that leaves us with the following solutions / work arounds: a.) cloud-init (or some other package) could possibly add some rules or black lists so the persistent-net rules were not written in images where it was installed. (I'd have to see if this would be possible) b.) euca-bundle-vol could take it upon itself to remove that file c.) the user can 'sudo rm -f /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules' before invoking euca-bundle-vol d.) the user can use a more clean approach to re-bundling an image. I generally don't like the idea behind euca-bundle-vol, and think that a tool like this is going to result in a never ending series of hacks to take a booted instance and turn it into a clean image. I would much prefer that re-bundling was done by downloading the image (http://uec- images.ubuntu.com/releases), extracting it, mounting loopback, modifying, and unmounting. [Bug 513273] Re: kvm with -vga std is broken since karmic
The only users positively affected by the new upload are those that want to use kvm or qemu with the -vga std option. Does this mean that if you aren't using the -vga option this change has no effect; and that if you are using the -vga option, it doesn't work today? I suspect that the bochs package can possibly be dropped from the archive. I think qemu was the only user of bochs previously, and upstream QEMU has switched away from bochs to seabios and vgabios instead. This needs to be investigated a bit more (perhaps a post on ubuntu-devel, in case anyone else knows of what in Lucid might still require bochs. As Soren notes, bochs is its own project. I don't think it's too much to ask for a simple regression-test before and after this vgabios change.
