[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'
I'd be happy to write a patch for the documentation. And given all of the problems with the design (and implementation) of libnss-ldap, I'd say any analysis will show that libnss-ldapd is still the path of lowest risk and greatest stability. [Bug 158816] Re: auto.smb acts weird when smbfs is not installed
I add this line in auto.smb to fix this behaviour. I have installed smbfs and it worked just after this line in the script. echo $key | grep -q '/' exit 0 The script exit if the key has slash like hostname/share. After that I start to mount automatically with ls /smb/hostname/. I tried to do a ls */* in /smb/hostname with 99 shares avaiable before that change. The autofs started to mount recursively the same 99 shares over each share again, and again. My /smb and the mounting system got really a mess. The strange thing is nautilus works without any problem. -- auto.smb acts weird when smbfs is not installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158816 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to autofs in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 561779] Re: squid is not started on runlevel transition 1 - 2
It isn't a matter of being able to work around the problem; an experienced user can do that, I agree. As I pointed out, it's that squid not running on moving to run level 2 isn't obvious to the admin that's just made the change. It has to affect users before the admin gets to know about the problem and investigate. A bug which affects the users of the system before the admin notices, and the admin will then have to spend time investigating *why* squid isn't running, doesn't seem low priority. Working around the bug is trivial, it's the upset and work it causes before the workaround stage is reached that's the problem. -- squid is not started on runlevel transition 1 - 2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561779 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to squid in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 565481] [NEW] PHP preg_match doesn't match matching string

Removing a couple of bs makes it match. I don't know which aspects of the regexp cause it to fail. [Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'
Howard, I have longingly looked at libnss-ldapd for almost 4 years now, and absolutely agree it has a better architecture, cleaner code etc., and is a sensible long-term migration path. (The other possibly being sssd.) But multiple test migrations in my LDAP deployments always turned up some show-stopper problem or another. The last of these happend 3-4 months ago with ubuntu workstations, running an up-to-date karmic client-side (actually triggered by trying to work around exactly this bug). If the server team decides they want to try migrating for lucid, i'd be the first to offer help testing. But I sure don't see this happening before lucid+1. Disclaimer: haven't tried the caching slapd with nssov yet, only nslcd, because i need at least an incremental migration path. -- NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/423252 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libnss-ldap in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'
Right, given the timing for the Lucid release it's probably way too late. I can't comment on your experience with nslcd as I have never used its code or read it in depth. The stub library and nssov have been pretty well tested internally in Symas; since the stub library is almost entirely cookie-cutter code it's known to be bug-free. At the risk of sounding like a commercial, I should note that Symas is offering standalone packages for free evaluation (our SUUMv4 product, based on nssov). A number of our customers have migrated successfully, it's an easy transition. In the meantime, for this bug, it looks like gcrypt uses its internal secure malloc function if the app didn't set any overrides. I'm not sure that making libldap override the secure malloc is a good idea, since some apps may still want that secure malloc behavior. And any app that explicitly uses gnutls or libgcrypt may get its preference silently overridden by libldap, or vice versa. Again, the only safe way to address this bug is by taking libldap/nss_ldap out of the application's address space.

Looking at the gcrypt code, it seems this bug should be reported against that; this whole secmem implementation (1) requires a program to be started as root (setuid) and (2) always drops the root priv when it has initialized its secure memory. These behaviors would certainly interfere with any setuid programs normal behavior. Seems like a design flaw in libgcrypt, as the docs http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gcrypt /Initializing-the-library.html#Initializing-the-library state that the application is responsible for controlling this behavior. Apps that are unaware that they are using gcrypt (because it came in implicitly through gnutls, thru libldap, thru nss) are SOL.

[Bug 565206] [NEW] Please update to 0.2.4 as it fixes compatibility issues with qt 4.6
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: scidavis According to upstream changelog, 0.2.4 is a bug fixing only release, and fix compatibility with qt 4.6. As Lucid will be released with qt 4.6, scidavis should be upgraded to 0.2.4. Here is the upstream changelog: Most important changes (since 0.2.3) - Some parts of the Python API have been marked as deprecated and generate warnings when used. This may be a bit unusual for a bugfix release; on the other hand, they won't be removed any time soon and inserting the deprecation warnings now will give everyone as much time as possible for getting accustomed to the API we're moving towards. Most prominently, Table.cell(column, row) and Table.setCell(column, row, value) are deprecated in favour of Table.column(column - 1).valueAt(row - 1) and Table.column(column - 1).setValueAt(row - 1, value) (note that the column/row INDICES DIFFER BY ONE!); the same goes for Table.text(c,r) - Table.column(c - 1).textAt(r - 1) and Table.setText(c,r,text) - Table.column(c - 1).setTextAt(r - 1,text). This serves multiple purposes. It simplifies the interfaces by grouping all functionality specific to a certain column in the Column class; it allows column objects to be stored and passed around; and it moves from the unconventional 1-based indexing to the more conventional 0-based indexing. Future additions to the API will increasingly make use of the columns-as-objects paradigm. - lots of bugfixes, again including crashes - fixed compatibility issues with Qt 4.6 and SIP 4.9 - performance improvements - substantially improved support for plots involving date/time data - added two Czech translations: a default one by Pavel Fric (feedback requested via http://fripohled.blogspot.com) and an alternative one by Jan Helebrant - updated Spanish translation, thanks to Mauricio Troviano; Brazilian Portuguese translation, thanks to Fellyp do Nascimento; and German translation - fixed and extended many parts of the API for Python scripts, including the new methods Layer.pickPoint() MDIWindow.clone() Folder.save(filename) newGraph(string) Layer.printDialog() Graph.printDialog() Layer.setRightTitle(string) Layer.setTopTitle(string) Layer.grid() # = returns an instance of the new class Grid Layer.insertFunctionCurve(formula,from=0,to=1,points=100,title=) Layer.insertPolarCurve(radial_formula,angular_formula,from=0,to=2*pi,parameter=t,points=100,title=) Layer.insertParametricCurve(x_formal,y_formula,from=0,to=1,parameter=t,points=100,title=) Matrix.recalculate() the constants QwtPlot.yLeft, QwtPlot.yRight, QwtPlot.xBottom, QwtPlot.xTop for specifying axes and the Grid class - multiple graphs can have active tools simultaneously - based on user feedback, the default behaviour when importing ASCII files has been changed to interpret the data as numeric (only applies to fresh installations of SciDAVis) - automatic resizing of table rows for multi-line cells intentionally dropped, because this seems to be rarely needed and has a huge impact on performance for large tables For example, this one: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=571462 should be fixed. ** Affects: scidavis (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Please update to 0.2.4 as it fixes compatibility issues with qt 4.6 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565206 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 523610] Re: rsyslogd spins CPU on some kernels
I confirm Gianvito's findings with 2.6.33.2, ie that the problem is NOT resolved. rsyslog isn't using up CPU cycles, but it is failing to read kmsg. What I suspect is happening is that attempting a zero-byte read from ksmg always succeeds, so rsyslog is using the wrong test, eg: sudo python import os f=open('/proc/kmsg') os.seteuid(1000) f.read(0) '' f.read(1) Traceback (most recent call last): File stdin, line 1, in module IOError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted ie rsyslog should try and read at least one byte for its test whether the user can read /proc/kmsg. Oddly, it looks like the patch (see comment 1 in bug #515623) to allow user read file access to /proc/kmsg is incorporated in 2.6.33.2, but it simply isn't working. -- rsyslogd spins CPU on some kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523610 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 565209] [NEW] UILocale option in firefox commandline not working in Ubuntu Lucid releases
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox Commencing from Ubuntu Karmic version, when a language-pack base package is installed, the Firefox language pack extensions for the same language (if available) also got installed globally inside the directory /usr/lib /firefox-addons/extensions/ But unlike in Karmic, the command line option of uilocale with firefox command for setting language localization of the browser does not work as expected in Lucid releases so far. (uilocale is a.k.a UILocale) Suppose we are operating the desktop in en_US.UTF-8 locale, then the default launch of Firefox would also be with US-English interface. If we then need to continue having the desktop operated in same locale, but want to use Fx with say Tamil ta localization, then in Karmic, one of the following two commands could be issued from a terminal after first closing all opened instances of Firefox. 1). export LANG=ta_IN firefox 2). firefox -uilocale ta However now in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx releases so far, (including Beta -2 with Firefox latest 3.6.3), the command usage with the -uilocale option does not work. If that command usage is entered, it only launches the browser in the language of the locale from which the browser is launched. I have tested with other languages too such as Sinhala (si) and Hindi (hi) and find the same result in each case, as if the uilocale command line option is no longer supported (though the help request firefox -h in Lucid still lists short description of UILocale option) The correct functioning of the uilocale option(as it was in Karmic which is as per generic scheme of Mozilla Firefox), would be of good use for the following reason: Command line usage with uilocale option is more convenient for novice users to put in a launcher - for example I can use separate profiles for English, Tamil and Sinhala (say profiles foo1, foo2 foo3 respectively) and in Karmic , have 3 separate launchers for following commands respectively: firefox -P foo1 -no-remote -uilocale en firefox -P foo2 -no-remote -uilocale ta firefox -P foo3 -no-remote -uilocale si These if launched at same time, then each is an independent instance providing localized interface as according to the uilocale option it was launched with and also be independent of the language locale from which it is launched But now in the absence of a working uilocale option in Lucid, for a particular language localization, the corresponding command could be only with preceding export LANG=; and such form cannot be directly inserted into a launcher but has to be put in a shell script file and have that as script file name as command in the launcher. That is, more work and less convenient situation in Lucid for novice users. Therefore I request that the functionality of the firefox commandline option of uilocale to be restored. K. The note describes what happened for the simlink. But inside the .thunderbird folder, my original abcdefgh.default folder (the one with prefs, account settings, extension, etc) was not existing anymore. A fresh new one was created instead. [Bug 559761] Re: mountall needs to flush plymouth message queue before emitting upstart events
Hello Scott, The updated mountall package (2.13~ppa1) appears to create more problems than it solves. Although the mountall process no longer spams the console with mountall: Plymouth command failed, there is now a more serious problem. The system no longer boots, even if fsck isn't doing disk checks. The last boot status messages show the disk status. After this, the system still responds to the Alt-Ctrl-F? commands to switch consoles, but no further advancement is seen in the boot process (KDM doesn't start, no logon prompts appear on the consoles). SysRq-R, SysRq-E, SysRq-I causes the system to launch the mountall-shell recovery shell, with the root partition mounted read only. The following output is observed on the console: This output is transcribed. I've contracted some parts between the '' tags. --- Output Begins --- fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 Root: clean, xxx/yyy files, ppp/qqq blocks Similar messages for all other partitions fsck usually checks SysRq : Keyboard mode set to system default SysRq : Kill All Tasks init: plymouth main process (348) killed by KILL signal init: plymouth-stop pre-start process (854) terminated with status 1 init: udev main process (387) killed by KILL signal init: udev main process ended, respawing [ uptime ] udev: starting version 151 General error mounting filesystem Recovery shell boilerplate root@host:~# --- Output Ends --- I'm also attaching the list of running processes 'ps -eF', obtained once the root filesystem was remounted read/write.
