Java programs have a bad habit of not being able to use the memory but rather preselect an amount of memory usage at JVM startup, which makes it difficult to have a sane default in packaging. It's the same for Tomcat, where we explicitly give people the knobs to tune it after the fact and recommend that they do so. I'm not sure there is a sane default here... I suspect raising the load would require you to bump that value again. It's also about minimal requirements for the Walrus: if we say it can be run on a machine with 1Gb of RAM, then obviously we can't really set the default to more than -Xmx512m. Unfortunately i have to install a package, so i can't wait for a solution. I have uninstalll the package with dpkg --remove --force-remove.reinstallreq mysql-server-5.1 At this point i have to end the deamon manually, because the command hangs again! dpkg --purge --force-remove.reinstallreq mysql-server-5.1 Then I installed the necessary updates and installed the mysql server again. The new installation takes also a lot of time at the postinstallation script, i think again at the deamon commands. Sorry for my impatience but i need the updates urgend. libvirt was not changed (libvirt-bin 0.7.5-5ubuntu25) , I meant to refer to a system upgrade done yesterday 2010-04-20 ( thru update-manager). There were other other updates, including udev. I noted that udev upgrade (to 151-12 ) was blocked during configuration (post install script, at restart udev ); I had to kill the postinstall script (that was happily almost completed) . May be the problem is udev related? 2 problems here: - cups is still an old sysvinit script; - samba is an upstart job but doesn't have any dependencies on cups. Moreover I think it's the samba upstart job that should assert start after cups, and not cups to worry about starting before samba. So for sure this actually a deficiency in the samba upstart job. Not clear to me if it can be solved before cups becomes an upstart job too. If you want a temporary workaround, put a: sleep 10 just after pre start script in /etc/init/smbd.conf.
