[Bug 568823] [NEW] Improved Java Memory/Performance Defaults
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: tomcat6 Forking an issue from #541520 The current default of a 128MB heap does not make sense. This was chosen when Java 1.4 had a default maximum heap size of 64MB. In Java 1.5 and later, the JVM will automatically size the heap based on available memory. So the current default setting actually unnecessarily sets a limit on the memory available to tomcat, when not setting anything at all would actually allow the modern JVMs to do a better job. [Bug 568904] [NEW] qemu-kvm FTBFS on powerpc and ia64
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: qemu-kvm qemu-kvm FTBFS on powerpc and ia64 in lucid. This is a combination of issues, as follows: 1: kvm support for newer powerpc is *very* new in the kernel, and the lucid kernels don't have the necessary patches (which would be too invasive to integrate). Simply disabling kvm for qemu builds is recommended by upstream: http://www.mail-archive.com/qemu-de...@nongnu.org/msg23996.html 2: ia64 host support is *extremely* new (first appearance upstream in March), and so nothing works at all on ia64 hosts. Long-term, the correct fix is to have the necessary kernel/kvm/qemu patches land, and enable everything everywhere. For lucid, this simply cannot happen, but ia64 builds can be dropped and powerpc builds done without kvm support, which improves supportability. ** Affects: qemu-kvm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- qemu-kvm FTBFS on powerpc and ia64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568904 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 562146] Re: Integrate nagios users with system ones
Speaking with my nagios3 maintainer in debian hat on Why www-data would have to read shadow file? What about using pam modules? even libpam needs access to the password hashes. Just by using libpam you don't get magically access to them. Citing from libapache2-mod-auth-pam package: To use with standard Debian configuration you have to add www-data user to shadow group. Be careful! It means it can be readable by anyone who can run its own CGI script! With that - authentication could use not only local user database, but also ldap, or either mechanism... The bug is talking about default setups and giving www-data access to shadow is really part for nightmares. So speaking for Debian, this will never happen. And if Ubuntu adds this by default they are are creating a big security problem. In times of rainbow tables password hashes are not really secure. And looking the nagios sources is stupid. Using apache auth is the most flexible way Nagios can go and I doubt that any of the Nagios devs will change this for Nagios-Core. -- Integrate nagios users with system ones https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562146 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nagios3 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 553142] Re: gdm does not obey NIS settings for user groups
Now I tried NIS on a current lucid VirtualBox install and found ssh to be working there right away and only gdm being broken. When capturing via tcpdump the YPSERV communication I noticed many identical queries for passwd.byname so I tried on both systems: aptitude install nscd . What is interesting is that running nscd helped with the ssh problem, but did not help with the gdm problem. So there could still be two different issues there. Also worth noting: running nscd reproducably breaks NIS-groups on console(tty) login, su and ssh-login, even with the nsswitch.conf work-around - but only on the VirtualBox system. special setup needed to reproduce: # must have NIS server (ours is on ...0.240 version 3.17-17 from debian/lenny/i686) aptitude install nis echo ypserver 192.168.0.240 /etc/yp.conf echo +:: /etc/passwd echo +::: /etc/group /etc/init.d/nis restart -- gdm does not obey NIS settings for user groups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553142 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nis in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 531823] Re: [lucid] All linux guests oops in kvm_leave_lazy_mmu during boot (9.04, 9.10, 10.04)
It is a bug related to the host side. There are patches in the upstream stable tree that will fix it. But that is just in review. Depending on how Debian picks up stable it would get fixed then 2.6.32.12 is pulled in. [Bug 563829] Re: olcAccess are options broken on upgrade in {-1}frontend.ldif
I took a quick look through the new slapd.postinst script found in: lp:~mathiaz/ubuntu/lucid/openldap/fix-root-olcaccess-upgrade Am I correct that you no longer attempt to delete the olcAccess: {0}to * by * none line from the olcDatabase={0}config.ldif file (i.e the line that is generated automatically by the slapd.conf - slapd.d conversion, e.g. during a Hardy-Lucid upgrade)? In my quick testing, I found that having that line still in the file prevented me from accessing that part of the tree (even though it appeared after the new gidNumber=0 line). For example, when grep olcAccess olcDatabase\=\{0\}config.ldif returned these two lines: olcAccess: {0}to * by dn.exact=gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external,cn=auth manage by * break olcAccess: {0}to * by * none , then an ldapsearch returned: = [...] # LDAPv3 # base olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config with scope subtree # filter: (objectclass=*) # requesting: ALL # # search result search: 2 result: 32 No such object # numResponses: 1 = But, when I stopped slapd, removed the olcAccess: {0}to * by * none line by hand, and restarted slapd, then the exact same ldapsearch command returned data: = # LDAPv3 # base olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config with scope subtree # filter: (objectclass=*) # requesting: ALL # # {0}config, config dn: olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config objectClass: olcDatabaseConfig olcDatabase: {0}config olcAccess: {0}to * by dn.exact=gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external ,cn=auth manage by * break [...] # search result search: 2 result: 0 Success # numResponses: 2 # numEntries: 1 = (On the other hand, I didn't find much explanation about using the gidNumber=0 form of authentication, other than the very brief mention of the switch to it in the openldap 2.4.17-1ubuntu3 release notes entry, so perhaps I missed something when running these tests The command line I ended up using was # ldapsearch -Y EXTERNAL -Hldapi:/// -b olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config , run as root... but let me know if that wasn't actually testing what I should have been testing) -- olcAccess are options broken on upgrade in {-1}frontend.ldif https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/563829 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openldap in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 569085] [NEW] improper group write permission for error.log
Public bug reported: On a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server, I found the following odd permissions: /var/log/mysql/error.log -rw-rw mysql adm It is highly unusual for a logfile to have group write permission, even more so for the 'adm' group. It is possible this could be fixed by adjusting the umask in the upstart job to use '027', but this may break other things. Alternatively, though less clean, change the group to be the same as the owner (ie mysql), though an administer would not be able to view the file without sudo/su. In Hardy, all mysql log files had proper permissions like so: /var/log/mysql.log -rw-r- 1 mysql adm This is not release critical, but should be fixed. ** Affects: mysql-dfsg-5.1 (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Status: Confirmed ** Changed in: mysql-dfsg-5.1 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Changed in: mysql-dfsg-5.1 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low -- improper group write permission for error.log https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569085 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-dfsg-5.1 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 494141] Re: CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available
I see this problem in Kubuntu Karmic as well. I've worked around it by adding /etc/init.d/samba reload to /etc/rc.local, since I'm not sure if there's a valid reason to start Samba way before CUPS. Probably adding a check at the end of the CUPS startup script to see if smbd is running, and if so then tell samba to reload would also have fixed things nicely. -- CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/494141 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 568731] Re: package grub-pc 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu4.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in grub2. (With many applications, you can report a future bug directly on the appropriate package by opening the application's Help menu and choosing Report a Problem. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs) ** Package changed: ubuntu = grub2 (Ubuntu) -- package grub-pc 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu4.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 568663] Re: Evince 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 can't show cbt files
what architecture do you use? could you add an example there? Architecture is i386. Tested installing lucid rc in virtualbox as well, installed all updates but the problem persisted. [Bug 568278] Re: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)
one day and reboot later, using the lucid package, i only have these errors: fixme:reg:GetNativeSystemInfo (0x6f4242) using GetSystemInfo() fixme:toolhelp:CreateToolhelp32Snapshot Unimplemented: heap list snapshot (running metatrader app) so the previous errors reported yesterday are gone and probably due to karmic package install. [Bug 568826] [NEW] Ubuntu One Preferences freezes when opened
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client My Ubuntu One is not syncing with the server (although I have a second computer which continues to be connected). I tried to open Ubuntu One Preferences, and the application opened, but in a frozen state. That is, I could not change tab, and clicking on the buttons had no effect. I could not close it, and right-clicking on the top gave a drop-down box, but selecting close did not cause any difference. I can minimise the window, but when I reopen, the window is blank except for Ubuntu One Preferences across the top. I gave it several hours, but have just killed it with system monitor. Incidentally I tried this a few days ago, and the effect was the same on this computer. Rebooting has had no effect. 1. I'm using the lucid lynx. 2. I'm not sure what the package is called. I accessed via System - Preferences - Ubuntu One. 3. I expected to be able to fiddle around with my Ubuntu One settings (as I have done on my other lap top, also updated with Lucid Lynx). I was trying to see whether I could get my Ubuntu One to be connected to the server. 4. The preferences applet was unresponsive. [Bug 568322] Re: Some functions aren't working like they should (see description)
This is an answer to Charles: ad. 3 If by this you mean torrents continue to seed after the seed ratio has been reached, this is confirmed to happen sometimes. The upstream ticket is http://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/1869. in many cases yes ad. 4 If so, then Ask for more peers is working exactly as designed by one torrent I had a list of trackers and the ask for more peers function was disabled and grayed out ad. 5 There are many factors at work here, and priorities are only one of them. If a particular peer doesn't have the pieces we need for a file, we won't request them from that peer. Or, if we do request them from a peer that's responding slowly, pieces from a different file may come in faster. We can control which pieces we ask for, but we can't control which order we get them in. it's strange that you think so... Some other torrent clients (mostly windows ones) have the same possibility and after the priority got changed, the files with higher priority were downloaded in the first order (tested on the same file on other torrent client's) ad. 6 I'm not able to reproduce this issue. Could you please try this in Transmission 1.92 and see if the problem persists? in this case please update the Ubuntu repository to have the newer version on. The Ubuntu repositories are mostly outdated ad. 7 If you want to say there is no influence at all then I'll need to see more information. I have changed allowed speed to limit brandwitch usage for upload then some time the limit was exceeded and the upload was going faster ad. 8 Setting torrent priority influences which peers get a first shot at the bandwidth that Transmission has allocated for that timeslice. If the peers on a high-priority torrent are unable to make use of that extra bandwidth, then the normal- and then low- priority torrents are given an opportunity to use it. We can control which peers we try first, but we can't control how much they're willing to send us. Not exactly true. I have 2 torrents and I had set 2 priorities: one was as hight and second as normal. The normal one was treaten by client like with higher priority then the hight one ad. 9 Same as my response for #7, though I'll add some users have gotten confused by accidentally turning off the Honor Global Limits checkbox in Torrent Properties Options s.t. a torrent will download faster than the user wanted it to. I think that the Honor global limits is redundant in the client and makes only users confused and frustrated about beeing unable to set individual transfer speed's ad. 10 Setting the peer limit definitely does influence the maximum number of peers that you're allowed to have. Could you please try this in Transmission 1.92 and see if the problem persists? The answer is the same as in point 6 ** Changed in: transmission (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- Some functions aren't working like they should (see description) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
