[Bug 568823] [NEW] Improved Java Memory/Performance Defaults

2010-04-23 Thread Gabriel Nell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

Forking an issue from #541520

The current default of a 128MB heap does not make sense. This was chosen
when Java 1.4 had a default maximum heap size of 64MB. In Java 1.5 and
later, the JVM will automatically size the heap based on available
memory. So the current default setting actually unnecessarily sets a
limit on the memory available to tomcat, when not setting anything at
all would actually allow the modern JVMs to do a better job.

initial heap size:
Larger of 1/64th of the machine's physical memory on the machine or some
reasonable minimum. Before J2SE 5.0, the default initial heap size was a
reasonable minimum, which varies by platform. You can override this default
using the -Xms command-line option.

[Bug 562146] Re: Integrate nagios users with system ones

2010-04-23 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
We had a short discussion and Alexander Wirt raised a very important
part:

Enabling the webinterface to authenticate against system users would
technicly mean that one would have to enable the webserver to read the
shadow file. The shadow file is readable only by root on intention and
opening that to the www-data user is asking for way more troubles than
it would solve.

[Bug 568904] [NEW] qemu-kvm FTBFS on powerpc and ia64

2010-04-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

qemu-kvm FTBFS on powerpc and ia64 in lucid. This is a combination of
issues, as follows:

1: kvm support for newer powerpc is *very* new in the kernel, and the
lucid kernels don't have the necessary patches (which would be too
invasive to integrate). Simply disabling kvm for qemu builds is
recommended by upstream:

http://www.mail-archive.com/qemu-de...@nongnu.org/msg23996.html

2: ia64 host support is *extremely* new (first appearance upstream in
March), and so nothing works at all on ia64 hosts.

Long-term, the correct fix is to have the necessary kernel/kvm/qemu
patches land, and enable everything everywhere. For lucid, this simply
cannot happen, but ia64 builds can be dropped and powerpc builds done
without kvm support, which improves supportability.

[Bug 568908] [NEW] slow connect to samba shares

2010-04-23 Thread Dave Kitchen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

When a windows (xp) client tries to browse a share on samba-from-ubunto, the
ConsoleKit system tries to access an X windows server (port 6000) on the client

timeout before the share is opened (about 25 seconds). The ofending process is

[Bug 562146] Re: Integrate nagios users with system ones

2010-04-23 Thread Alexander Wirt
Speaking with my nagios3 maintainer in debian hat on

Why www-data would have to read shadow file?
 What about using pam modules?
even libpam needs access to the password hashes. Just by using libpam you don't
get magically access to them.
Citing from libapache2-mod-auth-pam package:
To use with standard Debian configuration you have to add www-data user to
shadow group. Be careful! It means it can be readable by anyone who can run
  its own CGI script!

With that - authentication could use not only local user database, but also
 ldap, or either mechanism...
The bug is talking about default setups and giving www-data access to shadow is
really part for nightmares.

So speaking for Debian, this will never happen. And if Ubuntu adds this
by default they are are creating a big security problem. In times of
rainbow tables password hashes are not really secure.

And looking the nagios sources is stupid. Using apache auth is the most
flexible way Nagios can go and I doubt that any of the Nagios devs will
change this for Nagios-Core.

[Bug 553142] Re: gdm does not obey NIS settings for user groups

2010-04-23 Thread Bernhard M.
Now I tried NIS on a current lucid VirtualBox install and found ssh to be
working there right away and only gdm being broken.
When capturing via tcpdump the YPSERV communication I noticed many identical
queries for passwd.byname so I tried on both systems: aptitude install nscd .
What is interesting is that running nscd helped with the ssh problem, but did
not help with the gdm problem. So there could still be two different issues
there.
Also worth noting: running nscd reproducably breaks NIS-groups on console(tty)
login, su and ssh-login, even with the nsswitch.conf work-around - but only on
the VirtualBox system.

special setup needed to reproduce:

# must have NIS server (ours is on ...0.240 version 3.17-17 from
debian/lenny/i686)
aptitude install nis
echo ypserver 192.168.0.240 /etc/yp.conf

[Bug 568946] [NEW] clamav-base.postinst doesn't check user of clamd when it sets LocalSocketGroup

2010-04-23 Thread Paweł Tęcza
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clamav-base

I've upgraded ClamAV running on Ubuntu Jaunty from version
0.95.3+dfsg-1ubuntu0.09.04.1
to version 0.96+dfsg-1ubuntu2 which I backported using source package for
coming Ubuntu Lucid.
Unfortunately ClamAV failed during restart as you can see below:

* Stopping ClamAV daemon clamd [ OK ]
[...]
* Starting ClamAV daemon clamd \
ERROR: Failed to change socket ownership to group clamav
   Closing the main socket.[fail]

Please note that my ClamAV daemon runs with privileges of amavis user, not
default
clamav user, so its socket has the following owner and group:

# ls -l /var/run/clamav/
total 0
s- 1 amavis amavis 0 2010-04-22 16:30 clamd.ctl

# ls -ld /var/run/clamav/
drwxr-xr-x 2 amavis root 60 2010-04-22 16:30 /var/run/clamav/

The reason of the socket problem is that clamav-base.postinst script doesn't
check user
of clamd process and set automatically new option SocketLocalGroup clamav
in /etc/clamav/clamd.conf file. My ClamAV ran successfully again when I set
SocketLocalGroup amavis there and restarted it.

I think that post install script of clamav-base package should be more smart
and check
User option in the config file of clamd.

2010-04-23 Thread Stefan Bader
It is a bug related to the host side. There are patches in the upstream stable
tree that will fix it. But that is just in review. Depending on how Debian picks
up stable it would get fixed then 2.6.32.12 is pulled in. So it is not related
to your Ubuntu guest.

[Bug 563829] Re: olcAccess are options broken on upgrade in {-1}frontend.ldif

2010-04-23 Thread Nathan Stratton Treadway
I took a quick look through the new slapd.postinst script found in:
 lp:~mathiaz/ubuntu/lucid/openldap/fix-root-olcaccess-upgrade

Am I correct that you no longer attempt to delete the
  olcAccess: {0}to * by * none
line from the olcDatabase={0}config.ldif file (i.e the line that is generated
automatically by the slapd.conf - slapd.d conversion, e.g. during a
Hardy-Lucid upgrade)?

In my quick testing, I found that having that line still in the file
prevented me from accessing that part of the tree (even though it
appeared after the new gidNumber=0 line). For example, when grep
olcAccess olcDatabase\=\{0\}config.ldif returned these two lines:

  olcAccess: {0}to * by
dn.exact=gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external,cn=auth manage by *
break
  olcAccess: {0}to * by * none

, then an ldapsearch returned:
=
[...]
# LDAPv3
# base olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config with scope subtree
# filter: (objectclass=*)
# requesting: ALL
#

# search result
search: 2
result: 32 No such object

# numResponses: 1
=

But, when I stopped slapd, removed the olcAccess: {0}to * by * none line by
hand, and restarted slapd, then the exact same ldapsearch command returned data:
=
# LDAPv3
# base olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config with scope subtree
# filter: (objectclass=*)
# requesting: ALL
#

# {0}config, config
dn: olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config
objectClass: olcDatabaseConfig
olcDatabase: {0}config
olcAccess: {0}to * by dn.exact=gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external
 ,cn=auth manage by * break
[...]

# search result
search: 2
result: 0 Success

# numResponses: 2
# numEntries: 1
=

(On the other hand, I didn't find much explanation about using the
gidNumber=0 form of authentication, other than the very brief mention of the
switch to it in the openldap 2.4.17-1ubuntu3 release notes entry, so perhaps I
missed something when running these tests The command line I ended up
using was
  # ldapsearch -Y EXTERNAL -Hldapi:/// -b olcDatabase={0}config,cn=config
, run as root... but let me know if that wasn't actually testing what I should
have been testing)

On a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server, I found the following odd
permissions:
/var/log/mysql/error.log -rw-rw mysql adm

It is highly unusual for a logfile to have group write permission, even
more so for the 'adm' group. It is possible this could be fixed by
adjusting the umask in the upstart job to use '027', but this may break
other things. Alternatively, though less clean, change the group to be
the same as the owner (ie mysql), though an administer would not be able
to view the file without sudo/su.

In Hardy, all mysql log files had proper permissions like so:
/var/log/mysql.log -rw-r- 1 mysql adm

This is not release critical, but should be fixed.

[Bug 569118] [NEW] improper group write permission for /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps

2010-04-23 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

On fresh Ubuntu 10.04 LTS install of tomcat6 6.0.24-2ubuntu1, the
/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps has the following permissions:
/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps drwxrwxr-x tomcat6 adm

'adm' seems like on odd default choice of group here, since typically people in
the adm are allowed to read log files. The following command demonstrates this:
$ sudo find / -group adm -ls

I suggested fix is to change the group to 'tomcat6', since the directory
already has 'r-x' for 'other'.

This is not release critical for Lucid, but should be fixed
nevertheless.

[Bug 451801] Re: some keys print characters instead of performing their actions: ex: delete key generates ~

2010-04-23 Thread Sebastien Dejean
For those of you who either have no plans for a Lucid upgrade or you
cannot wait, I have been using the MariaDB/OurDelta binaries from their
PPA (read http://ourdelta.org/ubuntu for more info). I have been using
it for 2 months now, without issue. It is a viable alternative for
those of you who were using the Ubuntu MySQL package for development and
not production deployments.

[Bug 569167] [NEW] package samba-common 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-04-23 Thread Harald Eilertsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

During installation I was offered a side-by-side view of the samba.conf
file. That didn't quite work so I pressed cancel, then it offered me
again. Still not very easy but I browsed through and pressed Forward.
Then I was offered to keep my original conf, which I chose, and then the
script failed.

[Bug 494141] Re: CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available

2010-04-23 Thread Phil Salkie
I see this problem in Kubuntu Karmic as well. I've worked around it by
adding /etc/init.d/samba reload to /etc/rc.local, since I'm not sure
if there's a valid reason to start Samba way before CUPS. Probably
adding a check at the end of the CUPS startup script to see if smbd is
running, and if so then tell samba to reload would also have fixed
things nicely.

The machine accepts the connection, Once I insert my username and password it

[Bug 569248] Re: deregistered node is still reported on the CLC

[Bug 569292] [NEW] opiepasswd does not always generate valid seeds

2010-04-23 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

After installing the opie-client, opie-server, and libopie-pam packages,
and making the apparently needed edits to /etc/ssh/sshd_config and
/etc/pam.d/ssh, I go on to set it up for my user.

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ opiepasswd
Adding chris:
You need the response from an OTP generator.
New secret pass phrase:
otp-md5 499 co5482
Response: YEA ORE GIRL GLIB MOS BOIL

ID chris OTP key is 499 co5482
YEA ORE GIRL GLIB MOS BOIL

I test it, and it works fine for ssh. Great! But I used a lame
passphrase, and figure I want to change to a stronger one.

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ opiepasswd
Updating chris:
You need the response from an OTP generator.
Old secret pass phrase:
otp-md5 497 co5482 ext
Response: CRUD TEAM COL WENT WAKE LEA
New secret pass phrase:
otp-md5 499 co54
Response:

Er, that seed doesn't look very good or original. And it doesn't work
for opiekey/otp-md5:

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ otp-md5 499 co54
Using the MD5 algorithm to compute response.
Seeds must be greater than 5 characters long.

Trying to change my opie password again has the same thing happen. I
have to use the -s option to set a longer seed manually to fix this.

I've repeated this process several times (running opiepasswd after
setting a new one), and the new seed is always the old one truncated
(co, co1, co14, etc), or sometimes it even seems to fail at truncating
the old seed, and tries to reuse the old seed, causing it to give an
error:

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ opiepasswd
Updating chris:
You must use a different seed for the new OTP sequence.

[Bug 568824] [NEW] lucid fails to boot: VFS: Cannot open root device .. or unknown-block(0, 0) with lvm on luks

2010-04-23 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lvm2

My lucid laptop with root-on-lvm-on-luks has recently started oopsing at
boot, with

VFS: Cannot open root device mapper/lithe_ssd_root or unknown-
block(0,0)

(see screenshot).

This was working correctly in 2.6.32-17; I'm not totally sure if the
difference is in the kernel or in other things that are built into the
initramfs.

I think Ubuntu used to drop into an initramfs shell in this case but
that's not happening anymore, so it's hard to make any progress other
than by booting an old kernel or a recovery disk.

[Bug 568823] [NEW] Improved Java Memory/Performance Defaults

2010-04-23 Thread Gabriel Nell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

Forking an issue from #541520

The current default of a 128MB heap does not make sense. This was chosen
when Java 1.4 had a default maximum heap size of 64MB. In Java 1.5 and
later, the JVM will automatically size the heap based on available
memory. So the current default setting actually unnecessarily sets a
limit on the memory available to tomcat, when not setting anything at
all would actually allow the modern JVMs to do a better job.

Hi jbld,

The warning reported here typically indicates that it took longer for
your system to resume from suspend than expected. I believe there is a
5 sec barrier which your system likely exceeded. Based on your dmesg
output I see PM: resume devices took 10.760 seconds. I'm setting this
to traiged for further investigation. Thanks!

[Bug 568826] [NEW] Ubuntu One Preferences freezes when opened

2010-04-23 Thread Glenton Jelbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

My Ubuntu One is not syncing with the server (although I have a second
computer which continues to be connected).

I tried to open Ubuntu One Preferences, and the application opened, but
in a frozen state. That is, I could not change tab, and clicking on the
buttons had no effect. I could not close it, and right-clicking on the
top gave a drop-down box, but selecting close did not cause any
difference. I can minimise the window, but when I reopen, the window is
blank except for Ubuntu One Preferences across the top.

I gave it several hours, but have just killed it with system monitor.

Incidentally I tried this a few days ago, and the effect was the same on
this computer. Rebooting has had no effect.

1. I'm using the lucid lynx.
2. I'm not sure what the package is called. I accessed via System -
Preferences - Ubuntu One.
3. I expected to be able to fiddle around with my Ubuntu One settings (as I
have done on my other lap top, also updated with Lucid Lynx). I was trying to
see whether I could get my Ubuntu One to be connected to the server.
4. The preferences applet was unresponsive.

[Bug 568322] Re: Some functions aren't working like they should (see description)

2010-04-23 Thread Michal Dziczkowski
This is an answer to Charles:

ad. 3

If by this you mean torrents continue to seed after the seed ratio has
been reached, this is confirmed to happen sometimes. The upstream ticket
is http://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/1869.

in many cases yes

ad. 4

If so, then Ask for more peers is working exactly as designed

by one torrent I had a list of trackers and the ask for more peers
function was disabled and grayed out

ad. 5

There are many factors at work here, and priorities are only one of
them. If a particular peer doesn't have the pieces we need for a file,
we won't request them from that peer. Or, if we do request them from a
peer that's responding slowly, pieces from a different file may come in
faster. We can control which pieces we ask for, but we can't control
which order we get them in.

it's strange that you think so... Some other torrent clients (mostly
windows ones) have the same possibility and after the priority got
changed, the files with higher priority were downloaded in the first
order (tested on the same file on other torrent client's)

ad. 6

I'm not able to reproduce this issue. Could you please try this in
Transmission 1.92 and see if the problem persists?

in this case please update the Ubuntu repository to have the newer
version on. The Ubuntu repositories are mostly outdated

ad. 7

If you want to say there is no influence at all then I'll need to see
more information.

I have changed allowed speed to limit brandwitch usage for upload then
some time the limit was exceeded and the upload was going faster

ad. 8

Setting torrent priority influences which peers get a first shot at
the bandwidth that Transmission has allocated for that timeslice. If the
peers on a high-priority torrent are unable to make use of that extra
bandwidth, then the normal- and then low- priority torrents are given an
opportunity to use it. We can control which peers we try first, but we
can't control how much they're willing to send us.

Not exactly true. I have 2 torrents and I had set 2 priorities: one was
as hight and second as normal. The normal one was treaten by client like
with higher priority then the hight one

ad. 9

Same as my response for #7, though I'll add some users have gotten
confused by accidentally turning off the Honor Global Limits checkbox
in Torrent Properties Options s.t. a torrent will download faster
than the user wanted it to.

I think that the Honor global limits is redundant in the client and
makes only users confused and frustrated about beeing unable to set
individual transfer speed's

ad. 10

Setting the peer limit definitely does influence the maximum number of
peers that you're allowed to have. Could you please try this in
Transmission 1.92 and see if the problem persists?

The answer is the same as in point 6
