[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'

2010-04-27 Thread Andreas Sandberg
Mathias: IIRC, the compat workaround only works if you have all users in
the local passwd database. You still won't be able to use sudo, or run
any other setuid binary that uses nss-services, for users that don't
exist in the local passwd database.

The workarounds available AFAIK is:
- install nscd
- or replace libnss-ldap with libnss-ldapd (and nslcd)

Both workarounds worked for me on karmic.

[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'

2010-04-27 Thread Howard Chu
I read all of the diffs between 1.4.1 and 1.4.4 but didn't find any
likely suspects. However, tracing the library initialization in gdb, I
found the specific problem.

Ordinarily gnutls will initialize the gcrypt library, if no app has done
so already. In the gnutls initialization, it specifically turns gcrypt's
secure malloc off, and everything works fine.

However, in my trace on Lucid, libnss-ldap is linked to libldap_r, not
libldap. And because libldap_r has to support threads, it is required to
initialize libgcrypt's thread callbacks, and it must do this before
doing anything else with libgcrypt or gnutls.

http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gcrypt/Multi_002dThreading.html#Multi_002dThreading

The problem with that is, once we do this thread initialization,
libgcrypt considers itself fully initialized. When we next call gnutls's
init function, it checks to see if gcrypt is init'd or not, sees that it
is, and skips any further init'ing. So the secure malloc stuff remains
enabled.

I guess in this case we could do the initialization that gnutls skips,
but that's rather ugly, libldap shouldn't have to know or duplicate the
initialization steps inside gnutls_global_init(). Alternatively,
libgcrypt could be changed to not call its global_init() right after
setting the thread callbacks, since it's obvious that the caller still
has other initialization calls that it needs to make. (Frankly I think
this is the correct option.)

Finally, gnutls_global_init() could be changed to check for
initialization_finished, instead of initialization_started. (i.e., check
for GCRYCTL_INITIALIZATION_FINISHED_P, instead of
GCRYCTL_ANY_INITIALIZATION_P). But this latter is pretty dicey, gnutls
really has no way to know if it should be meddling in a half-initialized
libgcrypt or not.

I'm trying really hard not to say I told you so again, but I just
can't stop myself.

[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'

2010-04-27 Thread Rune Philosof
There is always the chance of something crashing, no matter how you fix this
problem!
Of course having a sudoable (or root) account in the local passwd database
would remove a lot of the uncertainty that comes from relying on network for
resolving users.

Several has commented that nscd is unstable. However, I see no launchpad bug
documenting this.
I have had no problems with nscd and it seems muzzol hasn't either.
Also, I have had no problems with libnss-ldapd.

So both are possible workarounds.
The suggested release note from mathias gug doesn't really provide an
acceptable workaround as it essentially disables the use of ldap for resolving
users.

Rune: just google for nscd problems, it has a long history of stability
issues. But on top of the issues caused by poor implementation, it also
has problems due to an inherently inadequate design. Some of these
issues are outlined in my LDAPCon presentation linked above. All of this
is well documented, I don't think it bears repeating in this already-
too-long bug report. (Just bringing this report up on my Seamonkey
browser drags the browser to its knees.)

upgraded to slapd 2.4.21-0ubuntu4 on 4/19, but the restart of the

If your syslog file includes a line that looks similar to

[Bug 570802] [NEW] spurious echo causes extra mail when running from cron

2010-04-27 Thread seph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chkrootkit

Using chkrootkit 0.49-3.1, if I run it with both an exclude and -q I get
a spurious new line, which causes cron to complain. I traced this down
to an echo statement, that I think belongs inside the if QUIET block.
I've attached my patch to that effect.

Poking around, I also see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=548582 which took a different approach. In some
ways it's cleaner, but when I try that patch it gets some of the logic
wrong., and outputs weirdly. So I like mine more.

2010-04-27 Thread Sam Hartman

jean-yves The errors are the results of MIT resolution to exclude
jean-yves DES/DES3 from the supported enctypes (security reasons).
jean-yves The parameter allow_weak_crypto = true should be added

That's very strange. All versions of Windows have supported rc4
(arcfour-hmac-md5 in MIT terms), and no version of Windows should
require DES to work.

If Allow_weak_crypto = true is making things work better with Windows,
something is broken somewhere else to cause this.

jean-yves Adding this parameter solved the errors of the original

jean-yves looks like a bug in krb5 when using allow_weak_crypto =
jean-yves true in the des/des3 old school support. This support

That's very strange. There have been some changes in DES support
surrounding reorganization of libk5crypto, however at this point, I
think we have fairly high confidence in that code.

Note that allow_weak_crypto is not new in 1.8; the thing that is new in
1.8 is that the default changed from true to false.

[Bug 570870] Re: pxe boot doesn't work with kvm

2010-04-27 Thread pingou67
It works again, but not out of the box

It seems the kvm-pxe package install the rom in the wrong directory :

/usr/share/kvm and qemu-kvm seems to search rom images in
/usr/share/qemu

I copied /usr/share/kvm/pxe-e1000.bin to /usr/share/qemu/pxe-e1000.bin

After that, I have another error message at boot:

Searching for server (DHCP)No IP address

I remember I had the same problem with karmic. I have generated a new
gpxe rom and it works again.

So it seems there is 2 problems (but not new):
1. kvm-pxe package install rom images in a wrong directory
2. rom for e1000 packaged in kvm-pxe is buggy

[Bug 546458] Re: kernel NULL pointer in -virtual (-server) kernel

2010-04-27 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi Scott,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 546458

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 546458] Re: kernel NULL pointer in -virtual (-server) kernel

2010-04-27 Thread C de-Avillez
This is still a concern, and not easily reproducible. I would rather
keep it open, unless you have reason to consider the OOPS resolved on
current 2.6.32-21. I am stress-testing (by extension) kvm, and hopefully
either I can state it has not happened on the last (few) thousands
tries, and recornfirm it.

[Bug 565101] Re: walrus reports java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

2010-04-27 Thread C de-Avillez
First 1,000-instances run just finished. No OOMs, but:

- memory usage on the Walrus seems pretty constant around ~420M
- memory usage on the CLC is still increasing; at the end of the 1,000 runs it
was at 870M, suggesting the end is near.

I have saved the logs at lp:~hggdh2/+junk/uec-qa, under the
lucid/final/bug565101-20100427 directory. I have also started another
400-instances run.

[Bug 571057] [NEW] slapd 2.4.21-0ubuntu5 corrupts olcDatabase={-1}frontend.ldif with duplicate olcAccess lines (again)

2010-04-27 Thread Stephen Warren
Public bug reported:

Bug 526230 is back.

I had slapd 2.4.21-0ubuntu4 installed, then apt-get dist-upgrade,
which pulled in slapd 2.4.21-0ubuntu5. This modified
/etc/ldap/slapd.d/cn=config/olcDatabase={-1}frontend.ldif by adding
duplicate olcAccess lines without any {0} index prefix, causing slapd to
fail to start. This caused:

==
Setting up slapd (2.4.21-0ubuntu5) ...
Backing up /etc/ldap/slapd.d/ in /var/backups/slapd-2.4.21-0ubuntu4... done.
Starting OpenLDAP: slapd - failed.
The operation failed but no output was produced. For hints on what went
wrong please refer to the system's logfiles (e.g. /var/log/syslog) or
try running the daemon in Debug mode like via slapd -d 16383 (warning:
this will create copious output).

Below, you can find the command line options used by this script to
run slapd. Do not forget to specify those options if you
want to look to debugging output:
  slapd -h 'ldap:/// ldapi:///' -g openldap -u openldap -F /etc/ldap/slapd.d/

Note: I tried apt-get dist-upgrade a few times to see if the problem
would fix itself before investigating. I think each run added a new
duplicate olcAccess entry without checking for pre-existing entries.
After I deleted the first two olcAccess above, slapd would start again.

[Bug 433777] Re: synaptic gives garbage message, crashes on forcing package version with dependencies

2010-04-27 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
to workaround it you need to first force the version of the dependencies then
force the version of the package you want to install.
The error occurs when you directly force the version of the main package.
Synaptic tries to install the forced version but install the current version of
the dependencies which failed because of version mismatch.

[Bug 542576] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU

2010-04-27 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi JohanFornander,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 542576

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Bug 363445] Re: installer and grub do not agree about disk squence resulting in boot failure

2010-04-27 Thread Armin Kunaschik
 Thanks for the feedback.
Can you run the following commands in terminal and provide us with their
 outputs (attach the files generated)?

 sudo fdisk -l I tee fdisk.txt
 dmesg dmesg.txt
 cat /proc/scsi/scsi proc_scsi.txt
 cat /boot/grub/menu/.lst menu.lst

** Package changed: ubuntu = grub (Ubuntu)

I suspect, that in the first command there is a pipe... and the last command is
simply the contents of menu.lst. Correct me if I'm wrong!
Here is the requested information:
menu.lst is historic information, since grub2 is active!
Notice the different disk numbers in menu.lst! hd(1,5) is bootable, setup
configures hd(2,5) as boot device.
