I reported the same set of symptoms on Ubuntu 10.04 with bug 586471. Uninstalling irqbalance 0.55+20091017-3ubuntu2 in Synaptic allows me to get past logging on and use the system normally. Thank you. As I am new to Linux, I could not immediately see how to edit /etc/default/irqbalance which is owned by root, so simply performed the uninstall as I had found sudo. Adam: thanks for your work in producing a debdiff out of Jeff's patch ! This needs to be fixed in maverick (development release) and also in lucid (as a Stable Release Update). You debdiff is a mix of the two, since it's targeted to lucid. It should either be 6.0.24-2ubuntu1.2 targeted to lucid-proposed, or 6.0.26-2ubuntu1 targeted to maverick. The autogenerated quilt patch could also use some comments to replace autogenerated boilerplate. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba SUMMARY: Following instructions to create a shared folder through Nautilus (right-click Sharing Options Share this folder, and following the subsequent prompts) does not always work. For some people, it works immediately. For other people, a solution has been found, which requires extra steps. I found this a problem across a small network of five computers: - one 64-bit Ubuntu (Lucid 10.04) - two 32-bit Ubuntu (Lucid 10.04) - one 32-bit Xubuntu (Lucid 10.04) - one Windows Vista. Every Ubuntu computer had the identical problem. Other people have reported having this problem. Examples: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1491092 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1502265 SYMPTOMS: When it works, everything works properly and quickly. But when it does not work... The shares appear to be created correctly. Using terminal commands, it is found that the machines do in fact connect. However, in Nautilus, the network takes approximately a minute to respond and then fails to find the shares. DISCOVERED SOLUTION: 1. Add the following two lines under the [global] section in file /etc/smb.conf in every Ubuntu and Xubuntu machine: os level = 33 name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins 2. Reboot. 3. Some people find that they have to experiment with the order of items in name resolve order. Please find attached my first attempt at converting the nis init script to upstart jobs. Please can others review and let me know how these look? I've tested the client side (with ypbind) here and that works well. Hmm furthermore, I don't think this is a certificate verification
problem, because the manual for the SSL wrapper (which https urls ride
on top of) states that verify_peer defaults to false. If you run this
code with 'strace -e trace=open,stat php .php' you can see that the
ssl certs dir doesn't even get opened until the google request,
suggesting that we never get a cert:

When I try to do a simple share of documents folder get an error: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot convert name Everyone to a SID. The connection was refused. This was a bit of a surprise that core functionality is missing. I spent a good part of the day trying to figure out why the exact same bridging setup under CentOS worked, and it didn't on Ubuntu. Oh, yeah, and +1 for importance. Seriously, bridging is kinda important in virtualization unless the user wants to NAT every single connection. @Teej: 1) It works for me. 2) It will not conflict with gdm because it runs after the user has logged in. 3) It will not result in extra panels (see point 6 below). 4) It has as yet always resulted in a panel that is normal and not yet in one that needs to be taken back to normal. 5) The command can, of course, be replaced by killall gnome-panel or just pkill gnome-panel because the panel restarts automatically. I was experimenting with the operator just to be on the safe side. 6) To test all of this, when you are logged in and the panels are all working correctly, open the terminal and try the commands pkill gnome-panel or killall gnome-panel, and gnome-panel separately. @Zbych: There does not seem to be any known solution to this problem yet, which is a pity. Every workaround is always silly from the point of view of correctness. That is why it is called a workaround. [Bug 592527] [NEW] no remote desktop viewer with ipv6 disabled
Public bug reported: I disabled ipv6 to speed up thunderbird email connection. It worked fine but when I later tried to use remote desktop viewer it would not start up. I re-enabled ipv6 (not entirely sure how!) and remote desktop viewer worked again. I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I disabled ipv6 using a method described in a tutorial to disable ipv6 which I found. Similar, but not the same. In my case, an error occurs IF the array has been named, and I don't see this mentioned in those two bugs. In ubuntu 9.10 I had compiz running, now in 10.04 I don't and the problems disappeared. Therefore it was either being caused by compiz (most likely) or by an older version of the program. [Bug 592536] [NEW] wubi installer for kubuntu doesnt run kubuntu
Public bug reported: the wubi installer for kubuntu was successfully installed the kubuntu from inside windows but it doesnt run kubuntu from very first time i was thrown at black screen telling me this error message.
