2010-07-14 Thread Thierry Carrez
Looks like MySQL cannot start, probably a configuration issue. Please
have a look at the MySQL logs in /var/log and attach them to the bug.
Also look in the /var/log/syslog for any message about MySQL failing to
start.

[Bug 573975] Re: pxe image fails to boot: Forbidden directory

2010-07-14 Thread Thierry Carrez
tftpd-hpa installs by default with /var/lib/tftpd-hpa as its directory, but
that behavior can be changed by a debconf preseeded value.
I can't see any issue in tftpd-hpa itself... Alkis, could you explain in more
details ?

Ccing strgraber, since he worked on making LTSP and tftpd-hpa work
together during the Lucid cycle...

[Bug 573975] Re: pxe image fails to boot: Forbidden directory

2010-07-14 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I did not see the issue myself, but the reporter and another person
(comments #1 and #2) say that for them, /etc/default/tftpd-hpa contained
/srv/tftp instead of the expected /var/lib/tftpboot, and that caused
the message forbidden directory to be displayed.

I don't know under which circumstances that happens, so I cannot provide
any feedback - it's up to the reporter to provide any details necessary.
Maybe on same cases the debian/tftpd-hpa.templates file isn't used?

There are also other problems in this bug report (compiz, sound etc) but
I think that the major one that's also reflected in the title is
related to tftpd-hpa, that's why I thought it should be moved here.

This is just a Maverick issue, Lucid could connect to any wirless

(as opposed to the desktop iso for Lucid) so I could test btrfs. I
haven't tried using the maverick desktop iso but I can burn one and boot
into live ubuntu to see if it still occurs there.

[Bug 573975] Re: pxe image fails to boot: Forbidden directory

2010-07-14 Thread Inno
I explain better.
At work I have a VM with ubuntu 9.10 that is an upgraded from a 9.04.
With 9.04 i had 2 working clients that do not work with 9.10 (they were old and
have been replaced now).
One client was not able to boot and the other had sound problems.

Then, for testing purpose, i tried at home a copy of the same VM after
upgrading to 10.04.
The result was that no clients (old and newer) were able to boot and I had the
forbidden directory error.
Searching for the cause, I found the mentioned /etc/default/tftpd-hpa where i
see the path to /srv/tftp.

In my 9.10 VM (still in use), that folder do not exist and in my 10.04 test VM,
I have both /srv/tftp and /var/lib/tftpboot.
But that is not the cause of the forbidden directory error in my case.
I wanted tell about the changed folder because that was not obvious to me (I
still have /var/lib/tftpboot) and knowing that, maybe can help...
I do not know the situation on a fresh (not upgraded) 10.04 installation.

How I had say, the cause of my problem was the mentioned
TFTP_OPTIONS=--secure that was missing in my 10.04 after the upgrade.
After adding that option, the forbidden directory error had gone and my
(newer) clients boot with 10.04

For the old amd K6-2 not booting...I found that upgrading to 64Mb of ram, make
it able to boot again (compiz is automatically disabled if it can't be run).
The other (an old notebook) now have not the sound problems that I had with 9.10

[Bug 605558] [NEW] dhcp3-server segfaults on start with large dynamic lease ranges

2010-07-14 Thread Calvin Owens
Public bug reported:

When an excessively large dynamic address range is specified in dhcpd.conf,
dhcpd3 crashes due to a segmentation fault.
Sample dhcpd.conf that exposes this issue: (adding other options has no effect
on the behavior)
   subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0
   {
   range 10.0.0.2 10.255.255.254;
   }

Expected behavior: Return an Address range too large or Not enough memory
error to the user.
Actual behavior: Segmentation fault.

Kernel log:

It seems highly unlikely this could be a security issue, unless it is a
symptom of a bigger problem. The only way to cause the crash is by
starting the server with a config as per above, and the dhcp3 binary
will not run unless the initiating user is root.

[Bug 604092] Re: package drbd8-source 2:8.3.7-1ubuntu2.1 failed to install/upgrade: drbd8 kernel module failed to build

2010-07-14 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Hi all,

The maverick kernel now includes the drbd module source. However, it is
not yet being built with the maverick kernel and this will be fixed
soon. Once that happens, we'll upload drbd 8.3.8 to maverick and most
likely, will be backported to Lucid.

Just hold on tight for news :)

[Bug 604092] Re: package drbd8-source 2:8.3.7-1ubuntu2.1 failed to install/upgrade: drbd8 kernel module failed to build

2010-07-14 Thread Dave Gilbert
Ah well, with Maverick life should get more interesting; drbd is part of
2.6.35 so in principal if it gets enabled then there should be no need
for the separate -source package.

It's listed as one of the kernel options that need turning on in bug
589439 for Maverick, and I've just added a comment to that.

[Bug 605593] [NEW] virsh won't start any domain, but gives an error message; maybe related to apparmor

2010-07-14 Thread mk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libvirt-bin

[Bug 604730] Re: can't stop qemu-kvm, if cgroup is running

2010-07-14 Thread Serge Hallyn
Hi,

thanks for posting this bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Could you give us a little more info, in particular:

1. does this happen whether or not you've run a kvm vm?

2. can you give us the contents of your libcgroup config files?

3. do you see anything else that looks potentially helpful (and
   non-sensitive) toward the end in:
/var/log/audit/audit.log
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/messages

4. before stopping kvm, the result of

for d in `grep cgroup /proc/mounts | awk '{ print $2 '}`; do
for d2 in `find /cgroup -type d `; do
echo $d2;
cat $d2/tasks;
done
done

[Bug 605283] [NEW] sftp/ssh freeze after hibernate

2010-07-14 Thread donquixote
Public bug reported:

Steps:
1. ssh-connect to a remote server with nautilus (a web server vm, in my case)
2. Open some remote files with gedit directly from nautilus
3. Open a terminal, and connect to ssh
4. Hibernate and resume.

Result:
- gedit freezes
- ssh terminal unresponsive
- at the time when i still had 2GB memory (instead of 4GB), the rest of the
system was also quite unresponsive.

Responsiveness (for everything) is back when I unmount the ssh/sftp
connection in Nautilus, and/or close the ssh terminals.

--

Solution:
- Applications should understand that the connection is temporarily gone, and
not waste resources on a broken ssh connection.
- Ideally, all involved applications should remember the remote filesystem
location and opened files, until the connection is back. If they already do, we
need to take care that the bugfix does not change this.
- Ubuntu hibernate should tell applications that ssh connections are
temporarily gone.
- Ubuntu wake-up-from-hibernate should ask the ssh password and reconnect, if I
want to use one of the applications that depends on the ssh connection. This
should not be in a modal dialog, but rather in a panel notification or anything
that can wait until user takes care of it.

Bottomline:
Remember the state, allow to reconnect, and be patient (with dialogs and system
resources) as long as the connection is (temporarily) gone.

Important:
As it is now, if after the unmount I then change one of the files in gedit, it
will ask me for the ssh password and reconnect. This is good, and should stay
this way!!

-

I make this a kernel bug, because of the hibernate stuff.
I imagine that gedit is just one example for this problem, and the real
solution has to happen in the kernel.

2010-07-14 Thread Kore Nordmann
Since thunderbird 3.0.5 is unusable to me (no lightning) I switched back
to evolution and can't reproduce it any more.

If this bug occurs for others as well, I can re-setup thunderbird and
help debugging this problem, but for now feel free to close the issue.

[Bug 554980] Re: two finger scroll/multitouch not working on lenovo thinkpad w510 having SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad..

2010-07-14 Thread Jeff Epstein
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 308191 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308191

Everyone wants Ubuntu to be as good as it can be. Idealistic notions
aside, the fact is that there is a limited amount of manpower to attend
to these bugs. So, in the interest of expediting a fix that will be
adequate to the largest number of users, I'll compare these bugs:

bug 554980 can be fixed with a simple patch to gnome-mouse-properties.
In fact, it was working in Jaunty, and this represents a regression.
Multitouch emulation is in the system, it works, and it simply needs a
GUI to activate it. This could even be done in lucid-updates.

bug 308191 touches a lot of packages and much of the required code isn't
deployed. There is no way this can be done in Lucid and probably not
even in Maverick. Even with a far-off, allegedly superior solution that
would resolve bug 308191, the user experience would be exactly the same
as if we fixed bug 554980. Genuine multitouch and multitouch emulation,
at this point, are indistinguishable to an end user. And while expert
bug fixers are spending time on a more difficult solution, they are
neglecting other, far more serious, bugs.

So, we have to choose: if we value a user experience, which enables two-
fingered scrolling in the near future, let's fix this bug. If we want to
spend years in development creating the ultimate solution, while users
get a sub-par operating system, then let's ignore this bug and focus on
308191.

In any case, this is not at all my decision to make. I'm just a user to
would like to have a solution that works as soon as possible. If the
Ubuntu community decides otherwise, so be it.

That's my last word on the subject.

[Bug 604007] Re: apt-get install failed on package python-gobject-dbg

2010-07-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Last update now.

As long as I need a stable Lucid system, I decided to clean-up
everything without spending more time in this investigation of the bug.
The problem actually arose when trying to debugging a proposed version
of a buggy package. After that trial, I caused the system to become
unstable (from the APT point of view).

Therefore I cleaned up everything just a few minutes ago, deleting
/etc/sources.list.d/ddebs and removing all *-dbgsym packages.

Now the system is correct and APT is working well.

Thank You for Your time.

Ciao

[Bug 595650] Re: After the last updates HP printer stopped working

2010-07-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

FLOID: Ooopppsss!!! Sorry for my stupid question at comment #59 and thank You
for Your reply.

ok - libusb-0.1-4 PROPOSED worked for me as well.

On comment #55 I described a problem related to duplex printing (dual
side printing - an hardware enabled feature of many HP printers) ...
thank You DANIEL for Your private answer.

After some tests with the new PROPOSED libusb, I suspect that the
problem is not related to the usb driver, many rather it could be
related to the printer language interface (cups or hplip or something
similar). Therefore You could consider void my comment #55 ... I will
focus on this later and maybe I will report a separate bug, if this will
be the case.

Grazie.

I've just noticed that that visible on all workspaces disappears (not the

[Bug 605290] [NEW] Unplug, replug AC on laptop, screen pulses, battery indicator not updated, power statistics and preferences screens unavailable

2010-07-14 Thread nUboon2Age
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

Steps to reproduce:
Laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200 with an after-market AC adapter)
1) unplug AC power
2) replug AC power

Resulting symptoms: Frequently (probably 70% of the time)
  1) Pulsing, Flashing, beating, flickering display (looks like the brightness
level is popping up and down rapidly)
  2) The battery indicator still shows battery as discharging.
  3) The battery indicator's Power Statistics (usually accessed by clicking
battery status on popdown menu) and Preferences screen are unavailable. If you
click on the battery status area you can see a faintly visible 3D outline of a
transparent dialog box the size of the normal popdown menu item, but no item is
visible).
  4) results of
   upower --dump
   cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
  and
   cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state
sometimes match what the battery indicator displays and sometimes not. This is
what leads me to think it is some kind of acpi event or other power event not
being properly processed on a deeper level than just the gnome-power-manager or
the battery indicator malfunctioning. I'll try and provide more details of this
at a later time.

click on the battery status area you can see a faintly visible 3D outline of a
transparent dialog box the size of the normal popdown menu item, but no item is

You have to request syncs for remmina-{plugins,gnome,xfce} too in order
to avoid problems with mismatched versions. remmina-plugins is
definitely required.

Re: [Bug 605216] Re: It doesnt matter what I put here, none of the solutions work!

2010-07-14 Thread Richard Waters
I have reported enough bugs, and thanks for the advice but that is ALL
I have been doing for the last 3 weeks. I have spent on average 2/3's
of every day of my University school holidays for the last 3 weeks
doing just as you suggested.

Still nothing, I had added details to other bugs, I have followed the
advice from launchpad, ubuntu forums, debian forums, mint/ubuntu
forums. I have also spent time on the gnome forums, kde and xfce
forums as well looking for problems.

This is the problem I find - there is NO answer for this problem. Now
Im a pretty clever guy, but when a problem is completely random, when
you report bugs as ur requested to do, you follow ALL advice and still
no answers, and other people are still having problems too?! I have
to wonder, thats all Im saying.

Granted, I take your point that ubuntu cant test on ALL forms of
hardware and thats a given; but neither can Windows, and as much as I
hate it, its fully stable on the hardware I have... ...so it begs
the philosophical question. How do THEY do it?!

But it doesnt matter now, I will have to wait another couple of years
again and give it another go. I can remember paying $49.95 for redhad
6 donkeys yrs ago and it has come a long way. Maybe in another 2 to 4
yrs ubuntu will ACTUALLY work out of the box.

I do, truely hopefully, wish and pray for that day. :)

Thanks, but the advice doesnt help

Richard, I'm sorry you are having too many problems with Ubuntu. You
need to know that it's impossible for Canonical/Ubuntu to test the
Operating System on every hardware in the world. I want to help you, and
the first thing I'm going to tell you is that you should visit the
Ubuntu Forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/) for help. There you will be
able to find other users with the same problems. And if you don't find
it you could open a new threat asking for help. Launchpad is not the
best place to solve your problems. Another thing you can do is visit the
#ubuntu channel on freenode.net where a lot of users will help you. You
will be able to chat with them, and it's going to be easy for you to
solve your problems. You can use Empathy to access the irc channel. I
hope you give Ubuntu another chance. Now I'm closing this report because
 it's not a bug.

 Bug description:
I have tried every trick in the book to get a stable system, even tried
swapping hardware, distros, mem, flashing bios, changing kernels, etc, etc.

Its the same thing; random crashes, all up to date, no response and only
thing that will get it working is a full reset!

I have already wasted 3wks trying to work this out with NOTHING working and
now Im forced to go back to windows because its the only way I will get a
stable machine that wont read only protect or shred files upon reboot.

I have not gotten ONE positive response from ANYONE on the boards to have my
problem solved, or for that matter even looked at?

I would be more than happy for ubuntu to give themselves 2yrs to come up
with the next stable release and be more than happy to even PAY $$ for the
priviledge IF IT WAS ACTUALLY STABLE AND WORKED OUT OF THE BOX.

[Bug 458742] Re: Cannot remove myspell-en-* separatelly

2010-07-14 Thread Arne Goetje
No, the | symbol is not the proper fix, because then installing the meta
package will only pull one of them, and we cannot guarantee which one.
I'm afraid with the current structure in our language support (by Language, not
by variation) we don't have any other choice. I have some ideas already on how
to change the structure of how languages are managed, but this will need to be
fleshed out in a blueprint.

[Bug 605027] Re: Please merge with 0.9.7.14-1 from Debian unstable

2010-07-14 Thread Bhavani Shankar
yeah fabrice

Its due to qt-assistant-compat being a seperate source package and
libqtassistantclient-dev is a build time dependency, But to make the
package install with qt 4.7 it is required I think(Please correct me if
I m wrong)

/me takes info from package description:

Package: libqtassistantclient4
Section: libs
Architecture: any
Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}
Breaks: libqt4-assistant ( 4:4.7.0~)
Replaces: libqt4-assistant ( 4:4.7.0~)
Description: Qt Assistant client library (runtime)
Qt is a cross-platform C++ application framework. Qt's primary feature
is its rich set of widgets that provide standard GUI functionality.
 .
This package contains the files necessary to run applications using the
deprecated QAssistantClient class, which is used together with the legacy
Assistant Document Profile (.adp) version of Qt Assistant.
 .
This library is obsolete. It is provided to keep old source code working. It is
strongly advised against using it in new code. New code should use the Qt Help
Framework introduced in Qt 4.4 and/or the version of Qt Assistant based on it
(also introduced in Qt 4.4) instead.

which means newer versions should use:

Package: qt-assistant-compat
Architecture: any
Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}
Breaks: qt4-dev-tools ( 4:4.7.0~)
Replaces: qt4-dev-tools ( 4:4.7.0~)
Description: Qt Assistant compatibility binary (legacy)
Qt is a cross-platform C++ application framework. Qt's primary feature
is its rich set of widgets that provide standard GUI functionality.
 .
This package contains the Qt Assistant compatibility version, based on
Assistant Document Profile (.adp) files, and the associated QtAssistantClient
library, for compatibility with applications providing help in that format.
 .
New applications should use the new version of Qt Assistant introduced in Qt
4.4, based on the Qt Help Framework also introduced in Qt 4.4, instead.

[Bug 595650] Re: After the last updates HP printer stopped working

2010-07-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Sorry to bother You again ... after some tests, I noticed that all the failed
two-sided printing generated always the same error. Please, see the latest
event here below:

/var/log/daemon.log:
Jul 14 08:44:19 uffcom2 hp[9036]: io/hpmud/musb.c 1403: unable to write data
hp:/usb/hp_LaserJet_1320_series?serial=00CNRW66G0LB: 45 second io timeout

When this log line appears, then the printer hang for an indefinite
time, having the receiving data flashing forever. Any further attempt
to print fails, because the new docs are queued after the hanging one.
If I try to delete or abandon the print from the queue window, the
printer still stays into this hanging status. The only way I found so
far to restore the printing is to turn the printer off and turn it on
again.

Would You please tell me if this is somehow related to libusb or if I
should search for the problem elsewhere?

Thank You in advance.
Ciao
CM

[Bug 605295] [NEW] Preview pane on evolution doesn't work after resume from standby

Public bug reported:

[Bug 605299] [NEW] missing i386 libraries on amd64

2010-07-14 Thread Metabaronen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: likewise-open

Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04

likewise-open:
  Installed: 5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1

We currently got tools written in java that must run in a i386 java
version. There are no i386 libraries provided by likewise-open so user
and group lookups fails. Workarounds for this is to install nscd or pick
and install libraries from a i386 installation (unmaintainable).

[Bug 605265] Re: sync acetoneiso 2.2.2 from debian sid

2010-07-14 Thread Fabrice Coutadeur
This can't be a sync as we modified the package in Ubuntu, and the change
should be kept.
Please update this bug report with the corresponding debdiff and put back the
status as new

Thanks,
Fabrice

[Bug 588889] Re: Ubuntu One disconnects - Synchro/Upload not working

2010-07-14 Thread Mitch Towner
This bug report is being closed due to your last comment regarding this
being fixed. This was most likely caused by the high server load that
has now been resolved. For future reference you can manage the status of
your own bugs by clicking on the current status in the yellow line and
then choosing a new status in the revealed drop down box. You can learn
more about bug statuses at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status. Thank
you again for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please submit any future bugs you may find.

[Bug 565724] Re: package fakeroot (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: unable to open '/usr/lib64/libfakeroot/libfakeroot-tcp.so.dpkg-new': No such file or directory

2010-07-14 Thread Çağrı Karabudak
Nope, it's a 32-bit 10.04. I'm sorry, I don't remember perfectly well whether
this installation is through upgrade or direct install. Cuz I closed the pc
during the 9.04 - 10.04 upgrade process by mistake. Then it wouldn't normally
open up. Then I don't remember what I did. I guess I reinstalled it (10.04)
from the cd afai can recall.
I'm not home now, I'll try posting the output when I get home around 13 hours
later.
