[Bug 191251] Re: [needs-packaging] php5-embed
Just to weigh in, I think its ridiculous that package maintainers would refuse to enable something that offers no additional security risk, and that users depend on (probably more and more as the language matures). I'd also like to point out this portion of the Ubuntu code of conduct Be considerate. Our work will be used by other people, and we in turn will depend on the work of others. Any decision we take will affect users and colleagues, and we should take those consequences into account when making decisions. Ubuntu has millions of users and thousands of contributors. Even if it's not obvious at the time, our contributions to Ubuntu will impact the work of others. For example, changes to code, infrastructure, policy, documentation and translations during a release may negatively impact others' work. In this case, I don't think we're considering the users' position, or how this negatively affects PHP by making it hard for users to utilize embedded PHP on our platform. The derision of PHP is also fairly inconsiderate to its developers and users. Given that large libraries of software are in fact being written in PHP now, its reasonable to think that one may want to embed PHP inside something else. So, I'd like to reiterate the question as to why this can't be part of the php5 package in main (and, hopefully, Debian) ... I believe it should not spread outside it's niche - serving web pages. I am free to do so, since I can decide what I want to support. Packaging is not just simple process of throwing some scripts in debian/ directory, it also means you have to take care of bugreports and that you actually care about quality of the final distribution. Can anyone recommend a solution that allows users in need of embedded php to move forward without adding to the burden of php maintenance? It really does sound as if you, Ondrej, would prefer that users not use PHP at all (whether on the web or not). This is unfortunate, truly. I don't think parallel maintenance actually helps. If bugs are found in PHP via another package, as Chuck suggested originally, they will still affect the main package, but may never be reported or fixed in it. Parallel maintenance works for something tiny like an imap extension, but this is another entry point to PHP, and so really must ride along with php. To follow my own suggestion, here is a recommendation for moving forward while this bug remains in limbo: Paul, until this is resolved, I'd suggest you maintain a patched php5 package in a PPA, at least then you'd have Ubuntu packages available for your users. I'd recommend forming a team on Launchpad as the owner of this PPA, so that anyone who needs to use embedded PHP can apply for membership, contribute, and upload to the PPA. This is actually quite trivial to do, and would definitely provide a path forward, though not a great one. -- [needs-packaging] php5-embed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191251 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to php5 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Hi Serge, Thank you for your insights. I did aptitude full-upgrade and was indeed annoyed by hung apt/dpkg processes running without a terminal attached. Also, there were whiptail processes stuck in an endless loop. Unfortunately, the entire system kind of crashed (only ping from outside worked) and I wasn't able to recover from this. [Bug 621380] [NEW] bad output from check_linux_raid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nagios-plugins The check_linux_raid script is slightly broken. If you do not pass an MD device, it should check all MD devices on the host. However, upon running the check, it outputs: Use of uninitialized value within %status in pattern match (m//) at ./check_linux_raid line 82, MDSTAT line 11. Use of uninitialized value within %status in pattern match (m//) at ./check_linux_raid line 91, MDSTAT line 11. OK md0 status=[]. md1 status=[]. md2 active with no status information. The first two lines are invalid output for a nagios script. There is a bug in Debian's tracker (#579049), but I don't see one here. [Bug 375371] Re: MySQL must not use /tmp
One thing that I'm seeing that may need to be documented, is that this breaks mysql-testsuite in its default configuration. Because we can no longer let /usr/sbin/mysqld write to /tmp at will, the test suite won't start without some coaxing. This works sudo -u mysql /usr/lib/mysql-test/mysql-test-run.pl --vardir=/var/tmp/mysql Or, if we add this to the apparmor profile: # for the testing suite owner @{HOME}/tmp/** rwkl, owner @{HOME}/tmp/ rw, Then we can start it as any user with just /usr/lib/mysql-test/mysql-test-run.pl --vardir=$HOME/tmp The mysql user runs with $HOME == /nonexistent, so this should be safe. -- MySQL must not use /tmp https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/375371 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-dfsg-5.1 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I am attaching a patch to configure using with-solr, also including the necessary depends and build depends. [Bug 375371] Re: MySQL must not use /tmp
Thanks for your work on this Clint; it is much appreciated. I'd prefer not to adjust the profile for the test suite. @{HOME} in an AppArmor profile does not expand to the process' uid's HOME, but the value of the @{HOME} variable as set in /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home. As such, this expands to: owner /home/you/tmp/... owner /home/me/tmp/... owner /home/her/tmp/... ... While with 'owner' match, it should generally be ok since /home/you/tmp shouldn't be owned by the mysql user, it does open an avenue of attack for people running mysqld as themselves and is IMHO unnecessary. As for documenting, the best course IMO is patch /usr/lib/mysql-test /mysql-test-run.pl itself to first do a quick test to see if --vardir is writable, and if not, give a helpful message about AppArmor possibly blocking it, suggest to use --vardir=/var/tmp/mysql instead, and exit with error. We should of course also adjust the test script in lp:qa-regression- testing to use --vardir=/var/tmp/mysql, since it is now using the testsuite.
