[Bug 634839] Re: package postfix 2.7.0-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-09-11 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi firebird, thanks for taking the time to report this as a bug and help
us make Ubuntu better.

This one is very confusing. Since all of this runs as root, there should
have been no permission denied on file access. Did you have /etc mounted
readonly, or maybe some hardening on the system, like immutable files on
/etc, that might have layered on top of the normal permissions?

Marking Incomplete, firebird, please respond to the above at your
earliest convenience so I can reopen the bug. Thanks!

This is not a bug in the clamav package. Some other package has locked
the user related files. See Bug #432964 as it has an extended
discussion on the topic. You can remove the lock files as described
there to resolve the immediate issue, but it would be best to try and
find the original source of these stale locks.

Would you be able to run the same test using Ubuntu 10.10 beta, to see
if the bug still persists ? You should be able to use a LiveCD to test.

[Bug 634085] Re: package vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 3

2010-09-11 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello odonata, thanks so much for taking the time to file this bug
report and help us make Ubuntu better!

Can you, by any chance, post your script?

I tried this on Lucid by doing

apt-get install zeroc-ice33

which completed fine, then doing

apt-get install vsftpd

which did not try to remove zeroc-ice33. There's also nothing obvious to
me that would makes apt want to remove zeroc-ice33 or its dependencies.

Marking incomplete, need a reproducible test case.

[Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-09-11 Thread jerrylamos
i830 gets same problem with' Beta 2.6.35-20. That level of Beta is
supposed to default to vesa according to Brian Rogers but does not,
skips the intel driver on purpose, skips vesa by mistake, then fbdevhw
gets Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. I'll
update bug #633593 as well.

So I specified i915.modeset=1 which bypasses the KMS blacklist, gets
the default intel driver, KMS is up and running, and for ordinary use
even internet videos running O.K.

Frankly, Maverick Beta you tube videos running better than any previous
Ubuntu on this 1 gHz Celeron. HD rather jerky of course.

For my i830 and my i845G running the default beta intel driver Version:
2:2.12.0-1ubuntu3 running fine for ordinary use. vesa also runs O.K.
on this i830.

I'll be testing Beta updates to see if the bug of not defaulting to
vesa gets fixed.

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-09-11 Thread quequotion
The triggering factors of this bug can range from hardware to installed
packages to how fragmented your drive is and how much drive seeking for
components happens during load. None of these are really the cause. The
cause is that upstart optimized for fast start up is starting X before
the underlying system is ready in some systems and under some
circumstances.

Which means best-case scenario we need to look at reconfiguring upstart.

I was reading
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs/devweek1007/UpstartJobs and came
across a good suggestion:

this command:
sudo initctl log-priority info

will cause upstart to output information in /var/log/syslog. I'm going
to give it a shot later with without sleep 2 and see if I can get
any interesting output.

That chatlog also has a few other insights into what may need to be done
to get to the bottom of this.

[Bug 635724] [NEW] Nvidia : default xorg.conf settings prevent smooth Compiz operation (jerky animation)

2010-09-11 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Hi !

Ubuntu automatically generates an xorg.conf file when installing the
proprietary Nvidia drivers. It works very well overall, however, one
cannot get a smooth Compiz experience without addiing two options in
xorg.conf.

* Option TripleBuffer True : without this option, some effects like
the scale effect (like the OSX Exposé) are *very* jerky. Moreover it
might make things generally smoother at a cost of a little more delay in
games which is generally not visible (I personally never noticed it)

* Option DynamicTwinView false : this is sadly more annoying because
it would disable some important features of the Nvidia drivers. However,
I think it should be discussed with Nvidia, because this feature makes
the nvidia driver report a bad vertical frequency value, which renders
animations less smooth.

* Moroever, the Sync to VBlank setting in nvidia settings should
also be enabled by default.

(I also filled in a report about the default Compiz value).

All in all, getting a smooth Compiz ( OpenGL) experience with an nvidia
GPU implies changing 4 values... I think this is a major concern for
mainstream users... Because most of them will stay with the default
values and have jerky / torn animations. (in movies / games / compiz)

Cheers !

[Bug 469788] Re: when I download programs with synaptic, an old download interferes and break the new do wnload. It`s poker2D that interferes.

2010-09-11 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Sorry that we didn't respond promptly to this bug report. I don't doubt
that it was a real problem, but unfortunately a bug report isn't that
useful to us without reliable steps to reproduce the problem.

I tried installing poker2D, uninstalling it, then installing something
else (Freeciv), using Ubuntu Software Center 2.1.18.1 on Ubuntu
Maverick. It worked fine. If any diligent tester can figure out a way to
reproduce this problem (does it happen when the poker2D installation
process is interrupted? is it something to do with poker2D's debconf
process?), please reopen this report with instructions. Thanks.

[Bug 635732] [NEW] OCaml subsection in Developer Tools is missing an icon

2010-09-11 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Ubuntu Software Center 2.1.18.1, Ubuntu Maverick

1. Navigate to Get Software Developer Tools.

What you see: All the subsections have an icon, except OCaml. The lack of an
icon messes up the alignment of items below it.
What you should see: If there is no specific item for OCaml, it should use the
generic packages icon.

[Bug 631365] Re: scons reports UserWarning: Unbuilt egg for setuptools...

2010-09-11 Thread Ingo Ruhnke
Not an scons issue it seems, the bug is already documented at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/distribute/+bug/576434

The workaround given there, namely:

sudo rmdir /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/setuptools.egg-info
sudo apt-get install --reinstall python-setuptools

Solved the issue for me.

[Bug 475773] Re: Get Software category lists are too long

2010-09-11 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
For 3.0, we have done two things to tackle this problem:
1. As I predicted in my previous comment, we've replaced the two-pane
department screen with a one-pane screen that ends with an All {number} link.
2. In some places, e.g. Science Engineering Mathematics, we've hidden
non-application items by default with a Show {number} technical items link.

What I have not had time to do, though, is any further research on
adding more subsections to reduce the length of the Accessories,
Education, Office, Sound Video, System, or Themes Tweaks
departments. If any usability lab, HCI class, or LoCo would like to help
out with Ubuntu, it would be great if they could take even one of these
departments and run a card-sorting exercise to work out what the
subsections should be.

Hi David,

I am not able to install anything nor set things right from the
terminal. (A lot of error messages). The Synaptic Package Manager the

The simplest solution I think is to reinstall 10.10 which I will have to
do later due to time broadband constraints.

Thanks for your help.

2010-09-11 Thread Lionel Le Folgoc
This behavior was added in

However, it seems the spec doesn't explicitely forbid to add a file extension,
so I'll workaround that for maverick in xubuntu-default-settings until it is
properly fixed in xscreensaver.

[Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz freezes on login for i845

2010-09-11 Thread jerrylamos
i845G and i830 run all ordinary applications, office, internet, internet
video, ... without Compiz.

Blacklisting Compiz for them is just fine with me, since I usually check
on install and set System Preferences Appearance Visual Effects None
anyway.

Of course I'm interested in running applications full screen so I don't
have any interest in desktop eye candy anyway. I do note from comments
on the forum others are interested in desktop eye candy.

By the way, my i845G and i830 are running Mavierick Beta with
i915.modeset=1, KMS active, O.K. not that I do anything with KMS or
switching modes. See bug #541492.

[Bug 623438] Re: Font size not correct in merged sandvich PDF

2010-09-11 Thread Yury V. Zaytsev
I am not aware of any open source OCR software that is doing multi-
column document recognition. It's more of a segmentation task, rather
than recognition itself, so it should be rather implemented in a front-
end, such as OCRopus. If you have a linear text flow, sandwich PDFs can
be read by a screen reader smart enough in a reasonable way.

Apart from already mentioned Finereader, old Cuneiform Windows freeware
seems to be able to do multi-column.

Just happend to me with my Aspire one netbook. I was running Ubuntu netbook
edition also updating. Will try to do the live cd recovery proposed.
Agree with a coment above: what if it is your only PC? pretty bad stuff to
happen on an update.

There is Busybox 1.13.3 anything that can be done with that?

forgot to add it was on the LTS and I keep it updated on a mothly (if not

[Bug 635756] [NEW] X11 does not start with glx enabled (ATI Radeon HD 4670)

2010-09-11 Thread Jan-Niklas Meier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When i boot Ubuntu without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf the screen gets black before
the GDM login screen. The graphics card doesn't provide any output and i am not
able to switch to a console. I think the driver brings the card into a bad
state so output is deactivated.
If i create a xorg.conf with a deactivated glx extension in can start normal
and of course i don't have 3D acceleration. Is the fglrx driver not working
yet? At least i was able to install it and i think this should not bring up
