[Bug 651875] [NEW] Bind 9.7.0-P1 validation errors

2010-09-30 Thread Antoin Verschuren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS still uses Bind 9.7.0-P1, which has a serious validation bug.
When turning on DNSSEC, NXdomains are reported as SERVFAILS:

; DiG 9.7.0-P1 www.bbc.net.uk
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 46074

See also the discussion on the Bind User list: http://www.mail-
archive.com/bind-us...@lists.isc.org/msg05701.html

There was a proposed patch, but it was never released because Bind 9.7.0
is no longer supported by ISC, and should be upgraded to Bind 9.7.1-P2
at least.

Since DNSSEC is gaining momentum, and more and more TLD's and domains
are DNSSEC signed, this bug is starting to annoy more and more people
that rely on log errors for Bind when introducing DNSSEC.

[Bug 652065] [NEW] dhclient hook assumes wrong service name (samba instead of smbd)

2010-09-30 Thread Jon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

The samba dhclient hook script located at
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/samba tries to reload the samba
configuration by calling:
 [ -x /etc/init.d/samba ] /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d samba reload

That doesn't work in Lucid because the samba service has been renamed to
smbd.

Also, instead of calling /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d the appropriate upstart
command should be used.

[Bug 651182] Re: Invocations of /etc/init.d/mailman start spawns multiple instances

2010-09-30 Thread James Page
Bug reproduced on up-to-date Lucid 10.04.1 server image.

Confirmed that the mailman startup script does not check current status
before starting mailman, which in turn does not inhibit multiple
execution on the same machine. This results in multiple instances of
mailman executing at the same time which are not stopped in full by the
startup/shutdown script.

Proposed importance: Low

 Hi Frank!

It would appear that another package management process was running at
the same time as this, as the failure happened because of a lock,
according to DpkgTerminalLog.txt. Do you have automatic updates enabled?

If so, make sure nothing else like 'update-manager' or 'dpkg' is
running, and then try running this:

 sudo apt-get -f install

Please let us know if that resolves the issue.

Marking Incomplete pending response from Frank.

[Bug 495394] Re: autostart almost always fails on boot time host

2010-09-30 Thread Mika Båtsman
I made the original patch on karmic. For some reason it stopped working
after upgrading to lucid.

I modified it a bit but forgot to post the changes. Here's an updated
patch which I've been using successfully on couple of Lucid machines for
over a month.

Hope it helps to solve the problem.

2010-09-30 Thread James Page
I have reproduced your issue; it appears that the mysql instance is not
started until after the bacula-director-mysql configuration step is
completed (which will obviously cause this step to fail)

If you allow the installation to complete and then re-configure bacula
after mysql has started you should be up and running using the following
command:

dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director-mysql

** Summary changed:

- package bacula-director-mysql 5.0.1-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade:

[Bug 652433] [NEW] Init script dependency error: krb5-kdc starts before slapd

2010-09-30 Thread infestator
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: krb5-kdc

If Kerberos5 configured to use LDAP directory on the same computer, it does not
launches at startup due to init script dependency is not configured. The
update-rc.d script creates symlinks for krb5-kdc and slapd with the following
names: S18krb5-kdc, S19slapd. This makes Kerberos key distribution center
launch before LDAP directory which contains data for this service and I get the
following in the /var/log/daemon.log:
krb5kdc[1018]: Can't contact LDAP server - while initializing database for
realm MYREALM

I think its no problem to make KDC to start after LDAP server and it
will definitely solve this issue.

It's definitely a problem for the KDC to start after the LDAP server if
the LDAP server is using Kerberos for authentication, which is probably
still a more common configuration than putting the KDC data in LDAP.

Unfortunately, both init script orderings break different things for
different people. What really needs to happen is that one or the other
(or preferrably both) services need to be robust against the other service
not yet being initialized.

Russ, you are right.

But in what case does LDAP performs an authentication using Kerberos on local
machine? I cannot imagine what for can LDAP use local kerberos authentication.
I am not very skilled in all these and my questions may be a little bit stupid
:-[ I just can suppose that Kerberos authentication may be used for
authenticating replication servers, but there is not any word about Kerberos in
LDAP manual. The SSL/TLS authentication is used instead.

The case that's most often cited is if you're co-locating infrastructure
on single machines, in which case you may have an LDAP replica and a KDC
on the same host. The LDAP replica then needs to do a GSSAPI
authentication to the master for replication, which requires access to the
KDC.

[Bug 495394] Re: autostart almost always fails on boot time host

2010-09-30 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
Thanks for the new patch! I tested it just now and it seems to work, but
it's always hard to tell when dealing with race conditions. I'll keep
testing.

Out of interest, the only change (apart from the more verbose way of
testing the $interface variable) is the added break statement, right?
I am not familiar enough with the Upstart boot process but why does this
change make the job work correctly? I also have not found any info on
what exactly ifquery does. Does it just read /etc/network/interfaces and
extract the interface names?

Anyway, thanks again!

[Bug 652489] Re: package openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127

2010-09-30 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Rahul, thanks for taking the time to post this bug report and help us
make Ubuntu better!

I'm a bit confused by these error messages in DpkgTerminalLog.txt:

Setting up openssh-server (1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4) ...
Creating SSH2 RSA key; this may take some time ...ssh-keygen: error while
loading shared libraries: libtermcap.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No
such file or directory

and

Creating SSH2 RSA key; this may take some time ...ssh-keygen: error
while loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.4: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

The reason being, ssh-keygen is part of the openssh-client package,
which does not depend in any way on libncurses4.

Can you please run

sudo apt-cache policy $(dpkg -S `which ssh-keygen`|cut -d: -f1)

And paste the output here in the bug report?

That should show you something like this:

cl...@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-cache policy $(dpkg -S `which ssh-keygen`|cut -d: -f1)
openssh-client:
  Installed: 1:5.5p1-4ubuntu4
  Candidate: 1:5.5p1-4ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 1:5.5p1-4ubuntu4 0
500 http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Thanks again!

Marking Incomplete pending response from Rahul.

Hi James,

My apologies, in fact we are using a live server at the moment. I am quite
anxious something might go wrong and will make our server do not work properly
and the website hosted will not work so i believe i cannot perform the upgrade.
But here is a thing which is also my mistake, at first i thought Ubuntu 7 is
feisty, but in fact there is two release for version 7, feisty and gutsy, my
mistake that our server is a gutsy.

I have looked on the http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ , but please bear
with me as i do not know how to convert this link to be a sources.list so maybe
like this, please correct me if i am wrong

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main

Thank you very much for your prompt response, God Bless.

Best Regards,

[Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown

2010-09-30 Thread Nathan Crawford
@John Morrissey - Nice work on getting this working! I hope you don't mind,
I've taken the liberty of packaging all your changes and putting them in a PPA
for easier testing.
One question on omit-kvm-vm-pids from #51, what does the '##*/' mean toward the
end of line 26?

[Bug 651782] Re: booting into recovery mode and selecting resume normal boot brings you to a text login

2010-09-30 Thread komputes
Hi Justin, nothing interesting in xorg logs because this is not an xorg
issue.

running sudo startx gets me to gnome as the root user, when what I
wish to have is gdm.

I can login and run sudo service gdm start which gets me to gdm,
leaving an open shell available in vt1. However this bug is about a
regression where the Resume normal boot option in the recovery menu
should get you to gdm directly (without logging in and/or typing a
command).

You did not mention if you are able to reproduce this bug. Please try
the following:

1) Open a terminal and type sudo telinit 1. Can you describe what you
see.

2) Restart your computer in recovery mode (accessible through pressing
shift at boot), select root shell and run the command sudo telinit
2. Do you see the GDM login window?

[Bug 648631] Re: Intel graphics drivers not working on new kernels on Maverick?

2010-09-30 Thread Lauri Siltala
I ran into an unrelated problem yesterday trying to run apport-collect to get
the information you requested.
Upon running it, it opened up a text-only web browser and took me to the
launchpad login page. The problem was, the Continue button didn't work at all
using the browser, it didn't even seem to consider the button a link. Any ideas?

2010-09-30 Thread gpk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr

I added a binary file (.pdf) to a bzr working directory,
ran bzr add foo.pdf
then ran bzr diff

First of all, bzr didn't detect that it was a binary file and do something
sensible.
I got lots of binary crud on my terminal.

But more importantly, it then froze, and I couldn't kill the bzr process, even
with kill -9. Here's the bottom of the file and my attempts to kill bzr:

[Bug 565630] Re: empathy accounts right-hand information box has a light background but white text when using a dark theme

2010-09-30 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Sorry, It seems that it's not fixed.
I forgot to mention that the one that is unreadable is when you look at an
Available account. The red and orange backgrounds are OK. So, to reproduce
this:
0. Use a dark theme (Darklooks, darkroom, murrine wise dark, ... ) with white
foreground text
1. Open empathy accounts
2. Create an IRC account for example on irc.freenode.net
3. Login with it so that it becomes available
4. Notice the light yellow background and that the text on the right hand side
is unreadable.

[Bug 651577] Re: GtkWarning with SmallScreen style XUbuntu

2010-09-30 Thread smarf
Maybe it's more a style bug than a meld bug. Trying truecrypt (binary
version 7.0) results in

Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve
property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-size' of type `GtkRequisition' from rc file
value 0 of type `glong'
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve

value 0 of type `glong'

[Bug 647128] Re: Maverick Beta Kernel Panic - VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0, 0)

2010-09-30 Thread cactaur
Thanks Jeremy,

I downloaded the image from September 29, 2010, with 2.6.35-22 and still
encountered the same problem. Unfortunately, I cannot run apport from
the installation because the kernel panics before the operating system
can load up. However, I'll run apport from the Live CD in case you need
some of the system information. Keep in mind that this is the Live CD,
so Ubuntu-specific information might be different than what is actually
installed on the machine. When I look at /var/log/dmesg, the file is
empty, but the error message was pretty much exactly the one in the
original report.

I will try the mainline testing builds now, and get back to you on
whether it fixes the problem.

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Background:
The hardware I am installing on is a Sony VAIO PCG-FRV26. It previously had
Ubuntu 10.04 running on it without any problems. The previous partitioning
scheme was
  /dev/sda2 | /boot | 2 GB | ext2
  /dev/sda3 | / | 36 GB | ext4
  /dev/sda1 | swap | 2 GB | swap
In the spirit of testing, I decided to try Maverick Beta.

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Download and burn Ubuntu Maverick Beta. Do the checksum and CD Integrity
checks to make sure the disk isn't corrupted.
[These steps may or may not be relevant]
  2. Boot from the CD, and when prompted, use Try Ubuntu
  3. Set up a wireless connection to the internet.
  4. Once the connection is established, double click Install Ubuntu 10.10 to
begin the installation procedure.
  5. Select the default values until reaching Partitioning
  [Probably where something odd happens]
  6. Choose a custom partitioning scheme.
  7. Edit /dev/sda2, set it as an ext2 /boot partition. Format it.
  8. Edit /dev/sda3, set it as an ext4 / partition. Format it.
  9. Click next and choose the defaults for the rest of the installation.
  10. Once the installation finishes, restart the computer and remove the CD.
  11. When the GRUB bootloader comes up, select the newly installed Ubuntu
10.10.

  What should happen:
Since this is a fresh install of Ubuntu, there shouldn't be any problems
booting it after the install. After all, there hasn't been an opportunity to
screw around with anything.

  What happens:
Right after selecting Ubuntu from the GRUB menu, a kernel panic appears and
the Caps/Scroll lock lights start flashing. The computer does not do anything
after that. When booting in recovery mode, there is more verbose output. Here's
the output that results from that:

[0.761431] VFS: Cannot open root device
UUID=3f45a729-2066-4d4f-ae80-3cb2a7c6c4f7 or unknown-block(0,0)

available partitions:

  [0.762185] [c010363e] kernel_thread_helper+0x6/0x10

  Other information:
The first time I tried installing 10.10, I selected btrfs as the root
partition filesystem to try it out. I got a similar error message, except with
UUID=... replaced with root=/dev/sda3. So it looks like the underlying
problem is still the same. I figured that btrfs was a beta filesystem and that
might be causing problems, so I installed again using ext4 as the root
filesystem, and got the error output above.

- I also haven't been able to find any similar reports of this so my
- system might somehow be an exception situation. But I can't imagine why,
- and someone new to Ubuntu might not like being greeted with a kernel
- panic on their first boot. So it would be really nice to figure out what
- the cause of this might be. Thanks!
