[Bug 22070] Re: Logitech Quickcam Messenger is not usable

2010-10-06 Thread Lee Jones
Okay, with regards to:

[ 1800.658161] STV06xx: Probing for a stv06xx device
[ 1800.658167] gspca: probing 046d:08f5

[ 1800.658176] STV06xx: st6422 sensor detected

[ 1801.002234] gspca: probe ok
[ 1801.002406] STV06xx: Probing for a stv06xx device
[ 1801.002411] gspca: probing 046d:08f5

This output looks fine to me.

I receive something very similar from my own (working in Lucid) cam.

I think the graphics route would be a good one to take.

Would it be possible for you to test your camera on other machines
running the same (most up to date) version of Lucid, which have
different graphics chipsets?

Same problem here after a fresh MM install yesterday. On two other
machines (on of which also uses the nvidia driver but was installed with
the Alpha version and updated from there) I haven't seen this issue.
Will try if reinstalling gnome-settings-daemon fixes it.

[Bug 487057] Re: Thunderbird starts virusscan instead of the right application when opening attachments

2010-10-06 Thread Martin Wildam
Even reboot did not help, but I made further tests and found out
something:

It depends on the PDF. PDFs created with Open Office are recognized
perfectly, but PDFs created on Windows with different PDF creation tool
might not work (need to find out, if general issue with Windows PDFs or
not). I examined mime type and both seem to be application/pdf (at least
that is what Nautilus says). - It also could be, that it is not the PDF
file itself, but how it is packed to the email. All emails with such
PDFs were sent by Outlook (which is a very good sample of crap gotten
widely adopted).

2010-10-06 Thread Taylor "Ripps" LeMasurier-Wren
Okay, I renamed .config/transimssion, and now transmission starts up fast.
But the moment I start some torrents and pause them. The cpu jumps up to
around 8-15%, even when they aren't running. So I don't think any of my
settings have anything to do with this.

2010-10-06 Thread Tim White
This bug also affects me. It may be filed under the wrong place, but an
upgrade of 10.04 to 10.10 should work without a problem. IF there is an
issue with the sudoers file, then it is an issue with the 10.04 file.
Maybe this package should predepend on a newer version of sudo?

> you should check your sudo configuration. It's not the standard one:

My sudo config is the default config that came with 10.04. Sudo has been
upgraded to 10.10's version (1.7.2p7-1ubuntu2 at the time I'm writing
this).

[Bug 632780] Re: bug in telepathy-butterfly: can't open contacts, contact list refreshes faulty

2010-10-06 Thread Andrew Clunis
I've seen this behaviour once, since upgrading to 10.10 earlier this
evening: double clicking on any contacts in Empathy's roster would
produce no results, and if you used the "Accounts" window to reconnect,
it will appear to work. However, the MSN buddies would disappear from
the roster and would not return.

Telepathy-butterfly appeared to be wedged; it did not respond to
SIGTERM, and needed a SIGKILL to get rid of it. That done, things
worked properly. We'll see if it happens again.

Nothing obvious showed up in .xsession-errors. Where do the connection
managers log things again...?

Yes, it is reproducible. From the initial bug report:

However after switching from mail to calendar or calendar to mail, the

back in a good state without restarting the application.

[Bug 656142] [NEW] ecryptfs reports errors, especially under system load

2010-10-06 Thread Jeff Abrahamson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

I frequently see this message in /var/log/kern.log for an ecryptfs
volume I mount:

Oct 7 06:48:02 london kernel: [82261.625859] Valid eCryptfs headers not found
in file header region or xattr region
Oct 7 06:48:02 london kernel: [82261.625864] Either the lower file is not in a
valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved. Plaintext passthrough
mode is not enabled; returning -EIO

I sometimes also see this error in the log:

Oct 7 06:23:49 london kernel: [80809.306298] Could not find key with
description: [dc60d6cfa254c94d]
Oct 7 06:23:49 london kernel: [80809.306306] process_request_key_err: No key

Applications rarely but sometimes report having received EIO. This is
disturbing in itself, since a given app should always respond the same
to the same error, and EIO is an unlikely error to be able to handle
within an app. A good test case is this:

$ find $base -type f -exec sha1sum \{\} \; > $outfile

Errors seen when accessing a file when the system is under heavy IO load
often disappear when the system becomes more quiescent again.

Reports on the web from a couple years back indicate that something like
this may happen with empty files. That seems not to be the case here.

This is a bit vague, because I'm not clear on how to provide more
detailed information on errors from a file system, even a user space
filesystem. I'm happy to do (non-destructive) tests if I may help.

Thanks.

[Bug 22070] Re: Logitech Quickcam Messenger is not usable

2010-10-06 Thread Yözen Hernández
I was wondering, exactt, what hardware are you using? I've been seeing
this problem on my girlfriend's desktop, which is using an nVidia-based
motherboard.

I can't give you all the exact lspci output right now, but I was
beginning to suspect the problem might have something to do with the
chipset. The same webcam works on two Intel-based machines and my own
ATI-based machine, all of them running the latest version of Lucid, all
up to date (yes, I even tried again after the last kernel update).

I'll send the lspci, dmesg, and error output as soon as I get a chance,
but so far this seems to be an issue only on her machine.

[Bug 655968] Re: Humanity "Back", "Forward", "Up", "Down", "Undo", "Redo" icons are inconsistent

2010-10-06 Thread Daniel Fore
Vish, I'd have to agree that consistency is important. If the arrows are
going to change, they need to *all* be changed.

I think there should be a revert until we decide what's going to happen.

We need to consider the negative impacts of such a change. Will these
rounded arrows be as recognizable (especially at small sizes) as their
sharper counterparts? Also, with this change, we're creating differences
between elementary and Humanity.

We should be sure that this is a truly positive change and not something
to be done just because "we can". It could have more far reaching
impacts than has been considered.

[Bug 656134] Re: dbus periodically becomes unresponsive and a reboot is required to regain system functionality

2010-10-06 Thread Jeff Lane
FWIW, I just got the following IMMEDIATLY after a reboot that I hoped
would fix the dbus timeout problems for a bit. Sadly, it did not. This
is the message I was getting from both u1sdtool and usb-creator-gtk once
dbus stopped working.

blade...@klaatu:~$ u1sdtool -s

Oops, an error ocurred:
Traceback (most recent call last):

not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not
send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

[Bug 656134] [NEW] dbus periodically becomes unresponsive and a reboot is required to regain system functionality

2010-10-06 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

After periods of heavy load, dbus goes off into the weeds and just
refuses to come back and work. This requires a reboot to fix and since
so many things rely on dbus, many things just stop working until the
system is rebooted.

I've noticed this can happen after a few days of uptime with moderate
system use, or after a lot of heavy use. For example, today, I've been
using usb-creator-gtk to make a lot of usb keys from Maverick ISOs for
test purposes. After a while I started getting dbus timeout error
messages whenever I'd try to make a new bootable usb key. After a
while, it happened every single time I tried doing anything via usb-
creator-gtk. If I was in the process of actually putting the ISO onto
the usb key, I'd just get a generic message saying that the action
failed. If I tried erasing the usb key prior to starting the ISO
transfer, I'd get a popup explaining that there was a dbus message
timeout error.

I also got that by running u1sdtool -s, which also relies on dbus for
communications. So, the point is, once dbus goes off into the weeds,
everything that relies on dbus stops working right. And trying to just
restart dbus is ... well, and adventure in itself.

So the only remedy I can find so far is a system reboot which is
disappointing to say the least.

I've noticed this happens a LOT now that I've upgraded to Maverick. I
don't recall them happening that frequently in Lucid, though I DID
experience the dbus issues there as well. It just seems more prevalent
in Maverick, and happens especially after periods of heavy usage or
several days of uptime.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 656136] [NEW] 64 bit Maverick desktop won't install from pen drive

2010-10-06 Thread David Wright
Public bug reported:

Using startup disk creator in Lucid 64 bit, I put ubuntu-10.10-rc-
desktop-amd64.iso on a 4 gig USB flash drive, with or without reserved
extra space. I erase the drive before clicking 'Make Startup Disk'.
When I reboot the computer it gets to a point where it switches the
video to 1920x1200, I see remnants of the screen from the shutdown and
that's the end. The USB drive light flashes a few times but nothing
else happens. Requires the reset switch at this point. Tried it on two
computers. I tried using the windows program recommended on the Ubuntu
site. When booting it got as far as putting the program name on the
screen before it crashed. The USB drive works perfectly with Lucid,
both desktop and server. The computers have Asus M4A785TD-M EVO
motherboards, 4gig DDR3, AMD Phenom II quad cores. One has an ATI
Radeon HD 4770, the other an Nvidia Geforce GT 240. No hard drives.
These normally boot with PXE.

2010-10-06 Thread jpka
Hi, you're already reproduce this but in some other way (you get almost
unreadable black text, while i get unreadable white).
To exactly reproduce problem, i use these steps, please try these:
boot from live CD;
use synaptic to get 'gnome-themes-extras';
use System-Preferences-Appearance to select 'Darklooks' theme;
in nautilus open home folder, press Ctrl+2 to list view, then press F3 and you
see unreadable text exactly in my new 'Screenshot2.jpg'

This looks to be because the netbook image doesn't have /etc/default-

mirror failing, resulting in source/apt-setup/generators/50mirror.ubuntu
failing to write out the default sources.list.

[Bug 656132] [NEW] No transparency in tooltips for Empathy's contact list

2010-10-06 Thread pablomme
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

This is in Maverick installed from a daily build just before RC.

Mousing over a contact in empathy's contact list displays a solid black
background for the contents, and a transparent black background for the
border, as seen in the following screenshot:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/656000/+attachment/1675956/+files/Screenshot-1.png

This is a regression from Lucid, where the contents had the same
transparency as the borders of the tooltip. This is different from bug
#538293 which refers to how display pictures with transparency are
rendered in the tooltip. This is different from bug #656000 (from which
the above screenshot link was borrowed) which deals with two different
issues, and does so from an aesthetic point of view, but this bit is
clearly a regression run into by mistake.

[Bug 656129] [NEW] [Maverick] keyboard layout always switching US layout after login with a special situation

2010-10-06 Thread Attila Hammer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Dear Developers,

I hope I choosed right package.
I see a special problem with default installation is not happened, I compared
Lucid and Mawerick working method.
My lucid system I using following keyboard layouts, US and Hungarian. Because I
using Orca Screen Reader, I move top with US keyboard layout, because if I
switch US or Hu keyboard layout dinamicaly, Orca keystrokes phisical place is
equals both two keyboard layouts if US keyboard layout have top of the keyboard
layouts list.

When I do same configuration with Maverick after installation (add US layout
with System>Preferences>Keyboard/layouts page) and using move to top button,
after logout and logging in again, the US keyboard layout is always the default
keyboard layout. This is the problem, because my Lucid system doesn't producing
this bug.
My home directory of course have a .dmrc file with have following lines if I
using hungarian locale:

[Desktop]
Language=hu_HU.utf8
Layout=hu

If I remove the US keyboard layout the list or move to top with Hungarian
keyboard layout, of course the default keyboard layout after login is
hungarian, but if I choosing this step, Orca laptop keystrokes is different.
For example:
If I using english keyboard layout, the sayall document command is Capslock+;.
If I using hungarian keyboard layout, the sayall document command is Capslock+,
keystroke, because in hungarian keyboard layout the AltGR, is writing ;
character. My Lucid system if I using hungarian layout or english layout, the
sayall document command is equals phisical place (Capslock+; or capslock+é if I
using hungarian keyboard layout but english keyboard layout is have top of the
list my Lucid system).

Possible fix this problem?

The reproducation steps is very easy:
If you have an installed Maverick system, do following steps:
1. Choose the system>preferences>keyboard preference tool.
2. Navigate the layouts page, and add for example the US keyboard layout.
3. Click the move up button if you choosed the US layout with the layouts list.
4. Logout, and login again. If you are lucky, the keyboard indicator shows the
default keyboard is US.

Lucid update did *not* change these arrows. You probably installed if
from some other source.

As for Maverick this is not going to be changed either. The current ones
i had no time to redo everything.

@ Daniel, the old arrows got too boring ;-)
We'll decide what new changes can be done for Natty.. We dont have to redo
everythingeither, toolbar icons need not be the same as the icons elsewhere..

[Bug 656128] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.10 xserver failed to start with nvidia driver

2010-10-06 Thread Dmity Klimkin
Public bug reported:

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 RC x64/x86 on Samsung R710 notebook.

After successful installation i run "Additional drivers" and it found
"recomended" nvidia driver. After installation it asks to reboot. And
after rebooting os could not starts. When i tried to start os in safe
xserver mode it reports that module 'nvidia' could not be found. I also
tried to install latest nvidia driver from their site but nothing
changed.

If i change driver from nvidia to nv in xorg.conf OS starts correctly but with
free driver instead.
Also on another computer ATI driver works correctly.

[Bug 605716] Re: CD/DVD Drives not recognized since upgrade to Lucid.

2010-10-06 Thread Lee Jones
Yes, please send those kernels to anyone else who you feel is suffering
from the same issue. Would you also be kind enough to ask them to report
back here if this solves it for them too. If they have open Launchpad
bugs can you tell them to post them here along with their comments?

As Lucid is LTS, I think we should endeavour to fix it. Would you be
kind enough to help me do that? If I conduct a bisect I will need
someone who has this issue to test the kernels for me. It shouldn't take
up too much of your time overall, but your help will be needed at short,
regular intervals.

2010-10-06 Thread andrew burke
Public bug reported:

Obviously, I probably created this problem myself by trying to install
something incorrectly.
However, in my defense, I must say all I wanted to do was install the mysql
database, but I could not for the life of me figure out which mysql thing I
should install - there were seemingly hundreds of different things listed under
mysql. Same for ruby and many other well known useful tools. It would be very
useful to have a very shortened list of well known things, and then have as an
option the ability to list all the other possibilities.

Thanks for all your hard work!

[Bug 656028] Re: package linux-image-generic 2.6.32.25.27 failed to install/upgrade: problemas de dependencias - se deja sin configurar

2010-10-06 Thread Javier Melero
Hi,

Sorry for that, it is not a bug, I saw the error message while updating,
and without thinking so much just follow the wizard to submit the
report, but now I was looking for the problem more consciously and I
found that I made a mistake trying to fix the splash problem with nvidia
drivers, and put the wrong quotes in this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

in file /etc/default/grub

So, when trying to reconfigure grub package, it fails and then this
produces this error.

Sorry again, if someone have the same problem, you'll see something like
this:

"... /etc/default/grub: 9: splash: not found ..." during an update.

Then have to check the quotes in that line.

Regards.

[Bug 656115] [NEW] cannot resize ext4 once GDT blocks exhausted

2010-10-06 Thread Robert Citek
Public bug reported:

With an ext4 filesystem, you can shrink and expand a filesystem until
you run out of GDT blocks. After that the filesystem cannot be resized,
neither shrunk nor expanded, even if unmounted.

Although this issue is most relevant in an LVM environment, here's some
code to demonstrate the issue using a loopback device. The code needs
to be run as root.

dd if=/dev/zero of=ext4.img bs=1M count=1
dev=$(losetup -vf ext4.img| cut -d" " -f4)
mkfs.ext4 ${dev} 5M
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 3G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 2G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 3G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 5G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 3G

At this point resize2fs returns an error:

resize2fs: /dev/loop0: The combination of flex_bg and
!resize_inode features is not supported by resize2fs.

This means the filesystems is 5GB forever. It cannot be resized,
expanded or shrunk.

In contrast, ext3 does not have this issue.

mkfs.ext3 ${dev} 5M
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 3G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 2G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 3G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 5G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 3G

Workaround: when creating an ext4 filesystem, use the extended option
resize=.  For example:

mkfs.ext4 -E resize=1000 ${dev} 5M
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 5G
tune2fs -l ${dev} | grep -i gdt
resize2fs ${dev} 3G

This option can be added to /etc/mke2fs.conf.

This is on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 with the latest updates.

[Bug 236275] Re: System very slow after suspend-to-ram

2010-10-06 Thread Alecz20
I have the same problem.

What I can add is that the slowness comes from the HDD working on
"something"

I managed to open gnome-system-monitor, and I saw that the system was
using huge amounts of memory:

1.5 GB of RAM and 1.1 GB of swap.

The computer was slow as when you are copying files.

I have no idea why this happens only when resuming from suspend.
