TERM=dumb It's very easy to reproduce : take a Xubuntu i386 10.10 CD, and install it with an unplugged internet connection (or without the package updates, as the fix for Bug #621927 has been released, but didn't catch my mirror). Reboot, run the xfce terminal (default terminal in xubuntu), apt-get install dstat, then run dstat > > > def gettermcolor(color=True): > "Return whether the system can use colors or not" > if color and sys.stdout.isatty(): > try: > import curses > curses.setupterm() > if curses.tigetnum('colors') < 0: > return False > except: > print >>sys.stderr, 'Color support is disabled, python-curses is > not installed.' > return False > return color > > > If you have a better implementation or any suggestion, feel free to > provide that information rather than pointing in a general direction... I don't know Python, but I can some suggest 2 fixes : 1. you can change the message to "Color support is disabled, python- curses is not installed, not working, or TERM $env{'TERM'} not recognized". 2. Something like that (like that, as I said, I don't the Python langage) : def gettermcolor(color=True): "Return whether the system can use colors or not" if color and sys.stdout.isatty(): try: import curses except: print >>sys.stderr, 'Color support is disabled, python-curses is not installed.' return False try: curses.setupterm() if curses.tigetnum('colors') < 0: return False except: print >>sys.stderr, 'Color support is disabled; TERM=$ENV{'TERM'} not recognized, or python-curses is not working.' return False return color -- dstat lost color support in ubuntu 10.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660181 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 602049] Re: Suspend to RAM fails due to tpm_kis kernel module (regression)
** Description changed: Suspend reliably fails with this kernel version, which I think came through on proposed a few days ago. The computer appears to go through the normal steps but doesn't power down. Hard power-off is required - there is no automatic recovery of the failed suspend. - the kernel module tpm_tis is being loaded rather than tpm_infineon, the - latter of which seems to be more appropriate since this notebook has an - Infineon TPM chip. + According to the developers, tpm_tis is supposed to work with all 1.2 + TPMs, complying with the TIS specification (that determines how the 1.2 + TPMs should interface with PC platforms), so it looks like a bug in this + kernel module. [Bug 611810] Re: [PATCH] NVIDIA GPU audio-over-HDMI: Patch required to support recent GPUs
I have a stock install of Maverick with just one updated package for the kernel. I'm no expert on the hardware so I can't be of any use there. I did notice that after I installed the new kernel there were four SPDIF controls for the Nvidia card in alsamixer and only one was unmuted. I'm not exactly sure what function they have, but I unmuted them all. [Bug 660307] [NEW] zeitgeist fails to run if its database structure is not complete
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: zeitgeist If zeitgeist's database (~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite) is incomplete, eg missing the events table, zeitgeist fails to run. And because the GUI does not report that zeitgeist faiiled to run, applications that rely on zeitgeist simply fail to work without any relevant reason given. I ran into this problem on upgrading an installation from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. After the upgrade, the dockbarx applet failed to run. The error message from gnome-panel just said it had failed to run, and .xsession-errors said the child process did not report any specific error. Running in debug mode (ie with the command "dockbarx-factory.py run-in-window") gave: ERROR:dbus.proxies:Introspect error on :1.134:/org/gnome/zeitgeist/log/activity: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) DEBUG:dbus.proxies:Executing introspect queue due to error Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/dockbarx_factory.py", line 26, in import dockbarx.dockbar ... File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/dbus/proxies.py", line 140, in __call__ **keywords) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/dbus/connection.py", line 620, in call_blocking message, timeout) dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name :1.134 was not provided by any .service files The error appeared to be a dbus error, but in fact was a problem with zeitgeist, which was failing to run because its database apparently was corrupted during the upgrade. I fixed the problem (eventually) by deleting the zeitgeist database file and restarting the zeitgeist-daemon manually. What I would expect to happen is: 1) The GUI should report that zeitgeist has failed to run. 2) Better yet, zeitgeist could create the necessary tables if its database is invalid or perhaps backup the old database and create a new one so it can run properly. It would of course be nice if dockbarx reported better error information, but since there are other applications that depend on zeitgeist, it would be good if zeitgeist could recover from this situation. Hello mayukmok00, thanks so much for taking the time to file this bug report and help make Ubuntu better! The logs I see above don't help very much in determining what happened to your server. However these two lines are very telling: [Tue Oct 12 15:28:09 2010] [notice] Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) DAV/2 SVN/1.6.6 mod_fcgid/2.3.4 PHP/5.3.2-1ubuntu4.5 with Suhosin-Patch mod_ruby/1.2.6 Ruby/1.8.7(2010-01-10) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8k configured -- resuming normal operations [Tue Oct 12 15:28:56 2010] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting The sever reached MaxClients in under 60 seconds of uptime. Also I see PHP, fcgid, and Ruby all in this one server, so its possible other things are using up all of the RAM. In short, I believe this may be due to the web applications you are serving, not any bug in php. Can you repeat the sequence which causes the problems on a machine that is not serving heavy production traffic? [Bug 637845] Re: [maverick] CPU frequency does not scale up unless all cores are in use
After a bit more digging I discovered something interesting. When idling, the CPU has the full range of frequencies available to it, from min to max. But, when the load ramps up, the BIOS appears to step in and limit the frequency, then ACPI throttling steps in. I used a simple script (attached) to discover this. Starting from an idle, cool CPU the BIOS maximum frequency is at max. A few seconds later, the limit starts to drop. A few seconds after bottoming out, ACPI throttling begins to increase. The full output I get is appended to the (in comments, at the bottom). It is also interesting to note that the CPU fan is always at max, even when the CPU is idling. ** Attachment added: "a simple cpu test" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cpufreqd/+bug/637845/+attachment/1691921/+files/burn.bash -- [maverick] CPU frequency does not scale up unless all cores are in use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/637845 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 660301] [NEW] S3 savage (but also with vesa driver): X crash/restart after first switch to console and back, garbaged and unusable screen after second console switch
Public bug reported: Hello, after running Ubuntu on two HP omnibook XE3-GC laptop machines successfully since version 9.04 (with only minor impacts), version 10.10 maverick has a severe problem with X since upgrading from 10.04 lucid. This type of machine has a S3 Savage/MX chip attached via AGP 2x. Since upgrading, X does no more tolerate any switching to text mode, no matter if caused, for example, by changing to a text console or by energy saving like DPMS or setting the laptop to standby/suspend. The first switch to text mode after the system has booted still works, but getting back to X afterwards results in an immediate shutdown and restart of X, so at least the session is gone and I am back at the gdm login screen. If I try to switch to text mode for a second time, the screen gets garbaged, usually filled with little squares in rainbow-like colours, mainly in the colour range from red to orange. In this case there is no way out anymore - I only can try to login blindly n a text console as root and type "reboot", which still works, so the system does not hang. Please remember that there was NO such problem in 10.04 lucid! This behaviour can be reproduced with or without an xorg.conf, and it does not matter if I try to switch off DRI, GLX or disable even these modules. Or disable AGP and use PCI initialisation - it makes graphics slow but does not resolve the problem. As I have two identical machines which show exactly the same behaviour, random hardware failure is NOT an issue. Please don't hesitate to ask for any further information that is necessary. To me the problem is quite urgent as it makes normal system usage quite impossible. [Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched rattling like sound with 5.1 surround configuration
** Description changed: + SRU justification: + Pulseaudio contains volume scaling code optimized for the MMX and SSE instruction sets on X86, and optimized volume scaling code for some ARM CPU variants. So the fix was not persistent. I tried another approach and added myself to the video group and GDM group and made sure I had full permissions on everything. This seems to have worked for now. I want to try a few more reboots to see if it's persistent. If one of you respond to this soon, can you let me know what groups I should belong to?
