TERM=dumb

It's very easy to reproduce : take a Xubuntu i386 10.10 CD, and install
it with an unplugged internet connection (or without the package
updates, as the fix for Bug #621927 has been released, but didn't catch
my mirror). Reboot, run the xfce terminal (default terminal in xubuntu),
apt-get install dstat, then run dstat

I don't know Python, but I can some suggest 2 fixes :

1. you can change the message to "Color support is disabled, python-
curses is not installed, not working, or TERM $env{'TERM'} not
recognized".

2. Something like that (like that, as I said, I don't the Python
langage) :

def gettermcolor(color=True):
"Return whether the system can use colors or not"
 if color and sys.stdout.isatty():
 try:
 import curses
 except:
print >>sys.stderr, 'Color support is disabled, python-curses is
not installed.'
 return False
try:
 curses.setupterm()
 if curses.tigetnum('colors') < 0:
 return False
 except:
 print >>sys.stderr, 'Color support is disabled; TERM=$ENV{'TERM'}
not recognized, or python-curses is not working.'
 return False
 return color

[Bug 660323] [NEW] touchpad right click no longer works after upgrade to 10.10

2010-10-13 Thread Ycros
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

My touchpad (synaptics) has a physical button underneath the bottom part
of the touchpad. In 10.04 and in Windows, I can left and right click by
clicking on the appropriate bottom part of the pad. Since upgrading to
10.10, both sides generate a left-click.

I have gone through all the touchpad preferences, and also all the
settings in synclient and come up with nothing.

That's not sufficient I'm afraid, since the wrong package is
installed. You need to uninstall the firmware-b43-installer package
and reinstall the (correct) driver package from Jockey, which should
now be firmware-b43-lpphy-installer.

same trouble in case of suspending to RAM (but has a larger impact
anyway). What is your video card chipset?

[Bug 574886] Re: Apt has strange network errors when updating indexes.

2010-10-13 Thread Manfred Hampl
@Marcos Henrique Esteves Barbosa:
As far as I can see, that is not the problem.
When digging through the source I see that the syntax : is only
used in the error message, but not in the real command that is executed to
access the network.

By the way, I got that error myself a few weeks ago, but without doung
anything a few days later the download and upgrade worked well without
error (both on lucid).

[Bug 660314] [NEW] Audacity missing main menu

2010-10-13 Thread androith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacity

Audacity in 10.10 lacks a File Edit View Effects, etc. main menu.
According to some youtube videos, it should be there. Finally, there is
no easy or obvious way to enable the menu in case it is hidden
somewhere.

[Bug 173652] Re: Regression (10.10): Unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter

OK, looks like it's specific to my model, will re-close this bug and
point everyone to bug #658198, where I am logging the not-very-
entertaining task of bisecting Maverick's kernel Git tree to find where
this bug started.

Reporting this bug on 10.10 amd64. When authenticating (e. g. update-

close it with the X button on top, it allows the updating to start.

[Bug 602049] Re: Suspend to RAM fails due to tpm_kis kernel module (regression)

2010-10-13 Thread Michael Doube
** Description changed:

Suspend reliably fails with this kernel version, which I think came
through on proposed a few days ago. The computer appears to go through
the normal steps but doesn't power down. Hard power-off is required -
there is no automatic recovery of the failed suspend.

- the kernel module tpm_tis is being loaded rather than tpm_infineon, the
- latter of which seems to be more appropriate since this notebook has an
- Infineon TPM chip.
+ According to the developers, tpm_tis is supposed to work with all 1.2
+ TPMs, complying with the TIS specification (that determines how the 1.2
+ TPMs should interface with PC platforms), so it looks like a bug in this
+ kernel module.

[Bug 611810] Re: [PATCH] NVIDIA GPU audio-over-HDMI: Patch required to support recent GPUs

2010-10-13 Thread MichaelH
I have a stock install of Maverick with just one updated package for the
kernel. I'm no expert on the hardware so I can't be of any use there.

I did notice that after I installed the new kernel there were four SPDIF
controls for the Nvidia card in alsamixer and only one was unmuted. I'm
not exactly sure what function they have, but I unmuted them all. Maybe
see if that has any effect?

Hi Clint,

I will try to reproduce the issue with a physically hosted machine. What
I have observe is when that package is installed the memory will all
rise up causing the server to be unresponsive.

Will check it again and will give feedback.

Thanks

[Bug 660310] [NEW] Firefox fails to add bookmark to the panel when dragging over the tooltip

2010-10-13 Thread Dmitry Petrov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Ubuntu 10.04
Firefox 3.6.12pre

Step to reproduce:
1)open firefox
2)go to some site (e.g. http://launchpad.net)
3)drag the site favicon on the panel and wait until firefox will show tooltip
with information about bookmark that is already on the page. Tooltip will be
shown over the bookmarks panel
4)drop favicon on the bookmark panel in the place, where it's under the toolip

Result: bookmark won't be added.

I couldn't reproduce this in firefox under windows XP, because it does
not place tooltips over the bookmark panel

I've tried the test.php script on maverick and it definitely exits
abruptly where one would not expect it to.

Marking Confirmed, setting Importance to High, as I believe this may
affect all php5-pgsql users in a very negative way (errors should not
crash your PHP!)

[Bug 660307] [NEW] zeitgeist fails to run if its database structure is not complete

2010-10-13 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: zeitgeist

If zeitgeist's database (~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite) is
incomplete, eg missing the events table, zeitgeist fails to run. And
because the GUI does not report that zeitgeist faiiled to run,
applications that rely on zeitgeist simply fail to work without any
relevant reason given.

I ran into this problem on upgrading an installation from Ubuntu 10.04
to 10.10. After the upgrade, the dockbarx applet failed to run. The
error message from gnome-panel just said it had failed to run, and
.xsession-errors said the child process did not report any specific
error. Running in debug mode (ie with the command "dockbarx-factory.py
run-in-window") gave:

ERROR:dbus.proxies:Introspect error on
:1.134:/org/gnome/zeitgeist/log/activity: dbus.exceptions.DBusException:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by
message bus)
DEBUG:dbus.proxies:Executing introspect queue due to error
Traceback (most recent call last):

**keywords)
  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/dbus/connection.py", line 620, in
call_blocking
message, timeout)
dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The
name :1.134 was not provided by any .service files

The error appeared to be a dbus error, but in fact was a problem with
zeitgeist, which was failing to run because its database apparently was
corrupted during the upgrade. I fixed the problem (eventually) by
deleting the zeitgeist database file and restarting the zeitgeist-daemon
manually.

What I would expect to happen is:

1) The GUI should report that zeitgeist has failed to run.

2) Better yet, zeitgeist could create the necessary tables if its
database is invalid or perhaps backup the old database and create a new
one so it can run properly.

It would of course be nice if dockbarx reported better error
information, but since there are other applications that depend on
zeitgeist, it would be good if zeitgeist could recover from this
situation.

[Bug 659880] Re: libapache2-mod-php5 will consume all available memory when installed and activated

2010-10-13 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello mayukmok00, thanks so much for taking the time to file this bug
report and help make Ubuntu better!

The logs I see above don't help very much in determining what happened
to your server. However these two lines are very telling:

[Tue Oct 12 15:28:09 2010] [notice] Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) DAV/2 SVN/1.6.6
mod_fcgid/2.3.4 PHP/5.3.2-1ubuntu4.5 with Suhosin-Patch mod_ruby/1.2.6

normal operations
[Tue Oct 12 15:28:56 2010] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider
raising the MaxClients setting

The sever reached MaxClients in under 60 seconds of uptime. Also I see
PHP, fcgid, and Ruby all in this one server, so its possible other
things are using up all of the RAM.

In short, I believe this may be due to the web applications you are
serving, not any bug in php.

Can you repeat the sequence which causes the problems on a machine that
is not serving heavy production traffic? Also something that would be
useful would be the output of:

ps auxww | grep www-data

Which should show the running swelled up processes.

Thanks!

[Bug 637845] Re: [maverick] CPU frequency does not scale up unless all cores are in use

2010-10-13 Thread Busby
After a bit more digging I discovered something interesting. When
idling, the CPU has the full range of frequencies available to it, from
min to max. But, when the load ramps up, the BIOS appears to step in
and limit the frequency, then ACPI throttling steps in.

I used a simple script (attached) to discover this. Starting from an
idle, cool CPU the BIOS maximum frequency is at max. A few seconds
later, the limit starts to drop. A few seconds after bottoming out,
ACPI throttling begins to increase. The full output I get is appended
to the (in comments, at the bottom).

It is also interesting to note that the CPU fan is always at max, even
when the CPU is idling.

[Bug 660301] [NEW] S3 savage (but also with vesa driver): X crash/restart after first switch to console and back, garbaged and unusable screen after second console switch

2010-10-13 Thread Hans-Juergen Mauser
Public bug reported:

Hello,

after running Ubuntu on two HP omnibook XE3-GC laptop machines
successfully since version 9.04 (with only minor impacts), version 10.10
maverick has a severe problem with X since upgrading from 10.04 lucid.
This type of machine has a S3 Savage/MX chip attached via AGP 2x.

Since upgrading, X does no more tolerate any switching to text mode, no
matter if caused, for example, by changing to a text console or by
energy saving like DPMS or setting the laptop to standby/suspend.

The first switch to text mode after the system has booted still works,
but getting back to X afterwards results in an immediate shutdown and
restart of X, so at least the session is gone and I am back at the gdm
login screen.

If I try to switch to text mode for a second time, the screen gets
garbaged, usually filled with little squares in rainbow-like colours,
mainly in the colour range from red to orange. In this case there is no
way out anymore - I only can try to login blindly n a text console as
root and type "reboot", which still works, so the system does not hang.

Please remember that there was NO such problem in 10.04 lucid!

This behaviour can be reproduced with or without an xorg.conf, and it
does not matter if I try to switch off DRI, GLX or disable even these
modules. Or disable AGP and use PCI initialisation - it makes graphics
slow but does not resolve the problem.

As I have two identical machines which show exactly the same behaviour,
random hardware failure is NOT an issue.

Please don't hesitate to ask for any further information that is
necessary. To me the problem is quite urgent as it makes normal system
usage quite impossible.

Best regards,

Hans-Juergen Mauser

[Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched rattling like sound with 5.1 surround configuration

2010-10-13 Thread Luke Yelavich
** Description changed:

+ SRU justification:
+ Pulseaudio contains volume scaling code optimized for the MMX and SSE
instruction sets on X86, and optimized volume scaling code for some ARM CPU
variants. This code initially did not deal with unusual numbers of channels, 3,
5, 6 and 7 on x86, and 3 on ARM. This resulted in various odd sounds, such as
indicated in the original bug report below, and other comments in this report.
This SRU fixes the code to correctly deal with the above number of channels, 6
channels being common for 5.1 audio output. Thanks to David Henningsson for the
patch.
+
+ Regression potential:
+ There is a very low chance of this regressing other parts of PulseAudio. The
patch in question only touches the optimized code source files in the source
tree, so the chance of this affecting other users detrimentally is extremely
unlikely.
+
+ This fix is in the above linked pulseaudio natty branch, ready for
+ upload once natty is open for general development.
+
+ Original bug report follows:
+
  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I'm hearing a high pitched rattling sound when I have pulseaudio set to 5.1
surround
I set PulseAudio to 5.1 surround via the PulseAudio Volume Manager under the
Configuration Tab
I'm running the Karmic Koala beta with all the newest Updates
  I have a 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

I've tried other settings under the Configuration Tab, Analog Stereo
seems to work perfectly but I have a 5.1 Surround Speaker Setup.

This problem seems to get worse as I increase the volume through
pulseaudio, if I change the volume of a individual channel it gets
almost impossible to listen to anything, all I can hear is a high
pitched rattling like sound. However if I set the volume of channels
individually through 'alsamixer' it doesn't screw up at all.

** Description changed:

  SRU justification:
- Pulseaudio contains volume scaling code optimized for the MMX and SSE
instruction sets on X86, and optimized volume scaling code for some ARM CPU
Thanks to David Henningsson for the
patch.

  Regression potential:
There is a very low chance of this regressing other parts of PulseAudio. The
patch in question only touches the optimized code source files in the source
tree, so the chance of this affecting other users detrimentally is extremely
unlikely.

This fix is in the above linked pulseaudio natty branch, ready for
upload once natty is open for general development.

  Original bug report follows:

[Bug 658967] Re: Cannot adjust fonts after enabling Nvidia proprietary driver

2010-10-13 Thread albert fishnets
So the fix was not persistent. I tried another approach and added myself
to the video group and GDM group and made sure I had full permissions on
everything. This seems to have worked for now. I want to try a few more
reboots to see if it's persistent. If one of you respond to this soon,
can you let me know what groups I should belong to? This bug may cause
you to lose permission to access GDM or desktop rendering because of a
ownership change. i will post again soon if this fix is persistent.
