[Bug 685514] [NEW] snmpd doesn't run as root by default - it should

The problem lies in the fact that snmpd does not run as root - if it
does, then I have no problem seeing row 38. Also, if the mount point is
accessible by the user running snmpd, I do see the row also.

In general, the fact that snmpd does not run as root limits the use of
SNMP as a monitoring tool on Ubuntu very badly.

I also got this error message. In the ubuntu-vm-builder, I had --
hostname 'test-vm' , I changed it to --hostname 'testvm' and the
problem disappears. So I believe the issue has to do with the minus sign
in the hostname parameter.

[Bug 685590] [NEW] dovecot 1.2.9 not compatible with thunderbird

Reverting back to 1.1.11 (from previous version) makes it work again.
Rolling forward to versions more recent than 1.2.9 (from maverick or natty)
doesn't work due to dependencies.

The dovecot community seems to have known about this bug since December
2009, and apparently have a fix. Wouldn't it be appropriate to make a
version with this fix in available for lucid, which is an LTS version,
and not supposed to ship with such show-stopper bugs (makes dovecot
basically unusable, as a majority of users have thunderbird).

Thanks.

[Bug 620441] Re: MySQL upstart stop job does not cleanly shutdown mysql

2010-12-05 Thread Imre Gergely
I tried it with a simplified test case with just DELETEing a lot of data
from the table with 1.5mil rows.

The DELETE command took like a minute and a half to return. After it returned,
I immediately did 'stop mysql' and saw the KILL message in the daemon.log after
~5 seconds.
After I started mysql again, I got the recovery messages in
/var/log/mysql/error.log like this:

InnoDB: Log scan progressed past the checkpoint lsn 0 241337601
101205 23:35:25 InnoDB: Database was not shut down normally!
InnoDB: Starting crash recovery.
InnoDB: Reading tablespace information from the .ibd files...
InnoDB: Restoring possible half-written data pages from the doublewrite
InnoDB: buffer...

With the mysql package from -proposed (5.1.41-3ubuntu12.8) when I issued
'stop mysql' after DELETE, it was just sitting there, nothing in
daemon.log, and in mysql/error.log I got

101205 23:51:25 [Note] Event Scheduler: Purging the queue. 0 events
101205 23:51:27 InnoDB: Starting shutdown...
101205 23:51:40 InnoDB: Shutdown completed; log sequence number 0 258830313
101205 23:51:40 [Note] /usr/sbin/mysqld: Shutdown complete

so it was waiting for InnoDB to finish whatever it was doing (that took
13 seconds) and then it stopped. After starting mysql up again there was
obviously no recovery needed.

Seems to me the fix is working fine.

[Bug 569757] Re: NIS upstart dependancy broken for lucid

2010-12-05 Thread Mattias Andersson
I agree with #15 -- this needs to be fixed in ASAP (and it should be
fixed in the LTS version!) I'm responsible for a whole network that
relies entirely on the NIS+autofs functionality (home folders, backups,
cluster nodes, etc.) If this doesn't work, then it causes all kinds of
unforeseen problems. I have a large number of servers that I want to
upgrade to Lucid, but I'm reluctant to do this just because of this
problem.

[Bug 573853] Re: Cannot control squid Unknown instance

2010-12-05 Thread Amos Jeffries
There seems to be some confusion over the way these squid processes
operates.

In your trace:

root 14719 0.0 0.0 24796 1076 ? Ss 14:26 0:00 /usr/sbin/squid
proxy 14721 2.2 0.2 40212 10352 ? Sl 14:26 0:00 (squid)

the process /usr/sbin/squid is a daemon supervisor. Ensuring worker
(squid) process remains running and restarting it on failures.

Adding upstart to manage this manager process is redundant. Using -N is
the correct way to start squid up to version 3.1 without the
supervisor/master process. 3.2+ with multiple workers will require
changes in either upstart or squid to integrate them better, but the -N
mode is still available meanwhile to disable the SMP support.

[Bug 683617] Re: Should not show tab in Properties window, when there is only one tab

2010-12-05 Thread William Friesen
For me, the extra tab that was hiding came from the Podcasts extension.
When added to the notebook, this had the property Order = 40, which
duplicated the Order value of a previous page in the notebook. I have
submitted a patch to the banshee bug that determines the amount of
visible pages by counting the unique page.Order values, and calls
notebook.ShowTabs when there is only one visible page.

Re: [Bug 683635] Re: remove fade from the compiz plugin list

2010-12-05 Thread Mark Shuttleworth

Look, surely we can remove the fade effect from alt-TAB without
affecting other pieces of the Compiz experience? If not, that's a bug
that we need to fix.

Regardless:

 - please do not fade between underlying windows during ALt-TAB, the r
esulting noise on the screen is extremely disturbing
 - please be super-fast on the actual picker, at the moment it's very
delayed there

Mark

[Bug 681752] Re: [IBM T42] Cannot resume after suspend

2010-12-05 Thread gjs
I also have a T42 and recently upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 and had the
same problem - on resume I would have a TTY login appear, but no
recognition of the keyboard. I would hold the power button and force
the laptop to restart or shutdown.

If you follow the diagnostic process on this wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Other
- it is clear that the problem is not fixed by changing the kernel. Here is
the relevant list of commands from the wiki that I tried to determine this:

Log out of X, and log into the console, and try suspend/resume (or hibernate,
or whatever) from there
Running /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh or /etc/acpi/sleep.sh should do it
If it does not come up ok, the failure is in the kernel rather than X
Test if caps lock works; whether this works determines how bad the kernel
failure is

I did that and it does come up ok, so the problem is with X since the
upgrade, not the new kernel. (Before determining this, I tried various
kernel versions 2.6.32, 2.6.35-22, 2.6.36 and the problem remained.)

What 'fixed' the problem for me was editing /etc/default/acpi-support
I changed the SUSPEND_METHODS=X line to another method. It doesn't seem
to matter which, I have tried both SUSPEND_METHODS=dbus-hal and
SUSPEND_METHODS=none and after logging out and back in, resume works after
suspend. I can't explain why this works, since I have gnome-power-manager
daemon running, and I choose suspend from the gnome desktop menu, which invokes
this daemon for suspending. The acpi-support SUSPEND_METHODS setting should
not have any effect, but changing it clearly does fix the problem.

I still briefly see the following error when resuming, but X restarts ok and
the desktop is back to its previous state:
  pm_op(): pci_pn_resume+0x0/0xa0 returns -16
PM: Device :00:00.0 failed to resume async: error -16

[Bug 575319] Re: Music doesn't play correctly in pingus

2010-12-05 Thread izogi
A person over here has reported they worked around the problem by
converting all the IT music files to ogg vorbis files, and replacing the
IT files in the data directory.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1505674

I'm not a Ubuntu user, but I'm seeing the same problem occur in Debian
with pingus version 0.7.3 for which the packaging is probably very
similar. Interestingly it occurs on my 32 bit laptop, but not the amd64
desktop (for the same 0.7.3 version). I haven't confirmed that all
dependencies are the same version, but I did make sure I had all the
latest ones installed on my laptop, to no effect. (Unfortunately the
desktop PC is in a shipping crate, so I can't check it right now.)

I thought it might be something to do with my laptop's mono/stereo not
working properly, such as if everything meant for one side was not being
played. I ruled this out once I found some stereo headphones, and
confirmed that the half of the notes that do play are coming through
alternate sides, so it's not the left side or the right side being
blocked out.

I downloaded the pingus source tar.gz for 0.7.3 and recompiled it, and
am seeing exactly the same problem when built from the upstream source,
so it's probably an upstream issue, unless it's to do with one of the
libraries like libsdl-mixer or anything similar. I was meaning to check
the pingus-devel mailing list, but their archive's offline right now for
some reason.

a format specification for argument 'amount' doesn't exist in 'msgstr[0]'

When I insert %(amount)s somewhere in the translation the translation is
accepted, but I expect that that will break the interface in some way.

My best guess is that there is an error in the .po file which requires
that translation to include a %s, even if it is not present in the
English string.

[Bug 571570] Re: network-manager does not manage wired network, no ip address on eth0

2010-12-05 Thread ororo
I have a similar issue.
The problem (in my case) is that pppoeconf modifies the file
/etc/network/interfaces, adding the lines:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

so that network-manager stops to handle eth0.
I commented these two lines, and network-manager works again.

No it is not possible without a major overhaul of the way that plugin
works. It also requires extensive work in other plugins.

 Regardless:

  - please do not fade between underlying windows during ALt-TAB, the r
esulting noise on the screen is extremely disturbing

Put animations framework to the top of my work items and then we can
deprecate the fade plugin

  - please be super-fast on the actual picker, at the moment it's very
 delayed there

This will need heavy lifting too - currenly we are waiting for the
decorator process to draw our picker window and it is slow. I don't
see any other way to do this other than to completely rewrite these
plugins.

Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

 Bug description:
Alt-Tab between applications under Unity requires a fade that takes longer
than 100 milliseconds, placing the action beyond the response limits
 recommended by the GNOME HIG.

Since I am capable of alt-tabbing at 5+ keypresses per-second (if the LIFO
order is predictable - see bug #682973) the fading and alt-tab system needs
to give a reliable visual response within the window between subsequent
 Alt-tab invocations.

If the user is working ahead of the display system intermediate drawing steps
should be dropped and only the cumulative state shown to the user.  To
 reproduce:

  1. Press Alt-tab lots (eg. 20+ times at 5-10 Hz)
  2. Release over the window of your choice

Expected: that window immediately appears usable within 100 milliseconds
Actual: Alt-tab pager carries on catching up with the user (and since there
at multiple windows open this is statistically unlikely to be the window that
 the user released on).

The many-many-presses is an extreme example but hopefully clearly
demonstrates the disconnect between the user's input and the tab pager/fade
 system.

[Bug 685421] [NEW] Packaging bug - Image file alteration causes issues

2010-12-05 Thread Ynot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hedgewars

Hedgewars (worms clone) complains that some images are not 32bit

Last two engine messages:
Loading
/usr/share/games/hedgewars/Data/Graphics/Girder.png
[flags: 14]ok (100x16)
Generating collision info... Land object should be 32bit

Hedgewars (and probably many other games as well) require images in specific
formats
In this example, Hedgewars needs PNG graphics files in 32bit RBG

Recent packaging optimisations change images (pngcrush?)
so now images differ from what application expects

Error above caused by
/usr/share/games/hedgewars/Data/Graphics/Girder.png being optimised from
a 32bit RGB PNG to an 8bit grayscale PNG

[Bug 685422] [NEW] network manager pppoe+wifi

2010-12-05 Thread ororo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

This is not a bug report, but a request of improvement.

I have a DSL pppoe connection, through a wifi modem. At the moment, I
have to use network-manager in order to connect to wifi, and then sudo
pon dsl-provider for DSL. I cannot see a way, inside network manager,
to use a DSL connection through a wifi modem.

This is quite annoying, because pppoeconf and network manager do not
work very well together, as I wrote here:

[Bug 402962] Re: Notify OSD should not rely on applications that inhibit the screensaver

2010-12-05 Thread Stefano Palazzo
Here's how to replicate the problem:

 * Start Totem, make sure disable screen saver while playing [all] is enabled
 * Let it play something for as long as the idle time-out for the screen saver
 *  Try to notify-send

This may also be a bug in Totem - as Jeremy Nickurak suggests.

[Bug 671977] Re: Inbox folder on IMAP disappears spontaneously

2010-12-05 Thread Stuart Cianos
Ok... A strange solution, but seems to work as a temporarily workaround
for at least one IMAP server here... Maybe this points to a problem with
Evo's socket buffering or some type of timing/race condition???

On the configuration screen for the account with the original IMAP
plugin, enable the Command to connect to server option. For the
command, pipe Evolution's input and output to and from Netcat:

Command:
nc server name or IP 143

This has ONLY been tested with TLS auth on my infrastructure here, but
has triaged the issue reliably on impacted systems.

+1 on a bug fix being issued, or 2.32 being made available in the
backports repo (2.32 fixes this issue, among others).

[Bug 666715] Re: [ATI Radeon HD 3200] Unity screen drawing problem

2010-12-05 Thread Reptile
I am also affected by the slow bug with an ATI HD5500 card in Meerkat
when installing gnome-shell.

Today I installed Natty and enabled the Ati driver and now when I reboot
the desktop background loads but nothing else. The computer is unusable.

Hitting Ctrl-Alt-F12 kills the desktop but no command prompt shows and I
am unable to move to an alternative login prompt to cleanly shutdown.

2010-12-05 Thread Omer Akram
thats a bug in compiz as i faced it too on a system (without unity
enabled) there are two things you can do at the moment. find metacity in
the applications folder and open it (it will bring your panels too, they
are running but not visible). or open tty1, login and do the following.

$ export DISPLAY=:0
$ metacity --replace

[Bug 649610] Re: Impossible to sort the email accounts

2010-12-05 Thread Sam Brightman
This has been a problem for a long time, and affects usability quite
seriously - if you have limited vertical space, you want you accounts
ordered so that the most commonly used one is at the top (and if you use
IMAP, you probably don't care about the local holders). Lots of
unnecessary mousing and scrolling at the moment, and for the last few
years.

I have not had time to test it myself, but Dell released BIOS version A06 a few

[Bug 658726] Re: Bluefish under Unity is missing menu bar

2010-12-05 Thread James Watson
I also have this bug when running bluefish on a fresh UNR 10.10 install
on a HPMini 110. I don't have much else to add to what Bill has already
said, my screen looks that same. It's a shame as bluefish is one of my
most commonly used applications which works perfectly on the regular
desktop version of Ubuntu. When starting bluefish from a command line i
get the following messages, none of which seem to indicate any problem;

jwat...@jwatson-mini:~$ bluefish
current directory=/home/jwatson
test if rcfile directory /home/jwatson/.bluefish exists
create socket /tmp/bluefish-jwatson-:0.0
plugins are loaded from /usr/lib/bluefish/
plugins are loaded from /home/jwatson/.bluefish/
load language files from /home/jwatson/.bluefish/
load language files from /usr/share/bluefish/bflang/
htmlbar_build_menu, finished

I've tried clicking around where the menu should be but am unable to get
any drop downs to appear.

So far this is the only bug I've found on UNR, which was put on the
netbook as a trial before installing the regular version of Ubuntu - but
it looks like it might be staying on here :-)
