[Bug 524447] Re: virsh save is very slow

2010-12-27 Thread EsbenHaabendal
Will a fix for this go into maverick?

This is quite critical for using kvm/libvirt for virtual server hosting
on maverick.

[Bug 694754] [NEW] Apache graceful-stop doesn't end apache processes

2010-12-27 Thread Daniel Benamy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2.2-common

I'd like to use /usr/sbin/apache2ctl graceful-stop to stop apache, but
it doesn't end most of apache's processes. I have to pkill apache2, and
sometimes cronolog.

This is apache2.2-common 2.2.11-2ubuntu2.7 on ubuntu 9.04.

Thanks!

[Bug 672177] [NEW] libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown

2010-12-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by ingo (ingo-steiner):

On a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04.1, after upgrading the offer libc6
upgrade, on the next reboot the root fs can't be properly unmounted
(mount: / is busy). This causes fsck to run on boot and of course some
minor issues with the filesystem. This might not be a problem with libc6
itself, but a side effect of upgrading in combination with some other
package (I suspect the init process, so I guess upstart).

The fsck run, and the orphaned inodes it finds are holding me back from
installing this on a new server - especially since this already happens
on a clean install of 10.04.1!

[Bug 672177] Re: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown

2010-12-27 Thread ingo
I wonder what Canonical tells its customers who purchased commercial
support for Ubuntu in case they discover this bug?

Something like:

sorry, we have done our best to hide such frightening messages from our
customers. Unfortunately the nasty community has retrieved and disclosed
it.

We have set up plymouth to hide the messages behind a puple splash
screen with walking dots and taken provisions, so a normal user won't be
able to uninstall plymouth (see Bug #556372). We have switched-off the
usual logging from fsck-runs in /var/log/fsck/checkroot and
/var/log/fsck/checkfs (see Bug #568594). We have set up the boot process
to perform a filesystem check for / at every boot, regaredless what the
user specifies in /etc/fstab column #6 (see Bug #568594).

Ubuntu firmly relies on 'fsck' as a proven and reliable tool to iron out
those minor glitches when your filesystem gets corrupted or marked dirty
on shutdown. Moreover we always point out: Ubuntu is not Debian!

[Bug 377571] Re: package postfix 2.5.5-1.1 failed to install/upgrade:

2010-12-27 Thread EJ Finneran
I think this might be a vaild issue under some circumstances but there
is an easy workaround. I looks like the issue with #5 is that he didn't
put a space between cat and the file path. I have the same issue with a
fresh install and default settings.

The issue is that for a default install, the installer grabs the full
comcast domain and puts that with a trailing dot in the /etc/hosts (not
sure if that's valid or not) and then by default the postfix package
grabs that hostname as the mail hostname.

Here is the output for me:

gitad...@ubuntu:~$ postconf myhostname
myhostname = ubuntu.hsd1.il.comcast.net.
gitad...@ubuntu:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 ubuntu.hsd1.il.comcast.net. ubuntu

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
gitad...@ubuntu:~$ cat /etc/hostname
ubuntu

FIX:

Removing the trailing dot from the myhostname entry in
/etc/postfix/main.cf fixes the issue for me.

[Bug 692647] Re: Network bridge does not come up upon boot

2010-12-27 Thread Peter Matulis
It appears the lag of a few seconds is enough to prevent other network-
required services from starting. I have tried with openvpn and
dhcp3-server. So I need to resort to the same rc.local [1] I had when
the bridge wasn't coming up at all pre-Lucid. I have tested this on
Maverick only.

[1]:

ifconfig eth0 up
brctl addbr br0
brctl addif br0 eth0
ifconfig br0 up
ip address add 10.153.107.61/24 brd + dev br0
ip route add default via 10.153.107.1

service openvpn restart

- On a fresh (vmbuilder) install of Maverick (server 64-bit) I cannot get
- a vanilla bridge to come up upon boot using the standard configuration
- method (via /etc/network/interfaces [1]). A manual restart of the
- networking service gets it to work:
-
- $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
-
- I have resorted to putting the above command in /etc/rc.local and that
- works for now. I would, however, also need to start any network-
- required services there as well.
-
- I mentioned this issue in bug #687631 but this is a more basic issue and
- it requires a bug of it's own.

I didn't specifically reproduce the problem, but the problem has happened, on

[Bug 672177] Re: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown

2010-12-27 Thread Clint Byrum
So this does in fact seem to be caused completely by init holding
libraries open. I patched /etc/init.d/umountfs to save the output of
lsof just before unmounting root:

cl...@natty-alpha1:~$ grep DEL /lastlsof
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399654
/lib/libnss_files-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399653

/lib/libpthread-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399663
/lib/ld-2.12.2.so

This is odd, because upstart claims to suport 'telinit u' in its man
page, but it actually doesn't do anything thanks to this revision in
upstart's codebase:

revno: 977
committer: Scott James Remnant sc...@netsplit.com
branch nick: upstart
timestamp: Thu 2008-06-05 01:26:10 +0100
message:
  * init/main.c: Also remove SIGTERM handling, we don't re-exec
properly and this is a dangerous signal to use anyway.
  (term_handler): Drop function.

So, I think glibc is doing its job calling 'telinit u' in the postinst.
This is upstart's bug. Setting to Critical in upstart now, and Invalid
in eglibc.

This is also a regression of bug #188925 , which was present in hardy,
and fixed in intrepid. Tagging regression-release.

[Bug 672177] Re: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown because init cannot be restarted

2010-12-27 Thread Clint Byrum
Oops, I'm still learning my way around the shutdown process and, indeed,
I missed umountroot.

I went ahead and added another lsof right after the call to telinit u,
right before MOUNT_FORCE_OPT=, and one *after* the remount of /.

It doesn't seem to make any difference:

cl...@natty-alpha1:~$ grep DEL /lastlsof-umountroot-post
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399637
/lib/libnss_files-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399636
/lib/libnss_nis-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399630
/lib/libnsl-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399643
/lib/libnss_compat-2.12.2.so.dpkg-new
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399644
/lib/libc-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 390256
/lib/librt-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399646
/lib/libpthread-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399647
/lib/ld-2.12.2.so
cl...@natty-alpha1:~$ grep DEL /lastlsof-umountroot
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399637
/lib/libnss_files-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399636
/lib/libnss_nis-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399630
/lib/libnsl-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399643
/lib/libnss_compat-2.12.2.so.dpkg-new
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399644
/lib/libc-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 390256
/lib/librt-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399646
/lib/libpthread-2.12.2.so
init 1 root DEL REG 251,0 399647
/lib/ld-2.12.2.so

I even tried forcing the telinit u by doing 'touch
/var/run/init.upgraded', and verified that it ran by adding -x and a
sleep at the end of umountroot.

This makes sense, because telinit u just sends SIGTERM to upstart, which
has no handler, as it was removed by revision 977, and doesn't seem to
have been added back. Since SIG_DFL signals are not delivered to init,
I'm not sure how umountroot's call to 'telinit u' can help in this case.

Unless I'm missing something in upstart's code (quite likely) I think
there may still potentially need to be a change in upstart to support
re-executing.

Another option if this can't be pushed into upstart is to mount a
special readonly filesystem at boot just for init's libraries. However,
it seems that re-execcing would be simpler than trying to get that
right.

[Bug 561622] Re: No video thumbnail after thumbnailing timeout

2010-12-27 Thread Tim Froidcoeur
I have verified on Maverick, nautilus --version GNOME nautilus 2.32.0, and the
bug can still be reproduced as described.
Although the method proposed to reproduce is artificial, the bug occurs often
during slow copies or transcoding.

[Bug 694696] [NEW] AMD cpu Cool 'n Quiet enabled problem. Perhaps a BIOS-Hardware problem..

2010-12-27 Thread gabry78
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compizconfig-settings-manager

OS:
Ubuntu 10.04.1 64 bit

HARDWARE:
AMD Athlon X2 5000
3 Gb RAM
NVIDIA 8600GT propretary drivers enabled and full functionally
Motherboard: M2N-E

NOTES BIOS:
Cool 'N Quiet function enabled
Last firmware updated to Deceber 2010

PROBLEM
Sometimes, when Ubuntu is stressed by heavy load, it crashes (freeze). No text
console or GDM restart could be executed..only Hardreset...
I've noted that this bug affects ubuntu only when Cool 'N Quiet function BIOS
was enabled (CPU frequency modulation). In last line of Kernel log was present:

kernel: [ 113.500027] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -69064579 ns)

I've noted that this problem perhaps affects even Microsoft Windows when
Cool 'N Quiet was installed because also in that case a strange blue
death screen appears in similar conditions.

I believe this is a BIOS or Hardware problem. Any ideas about it?

Most probably it's an external OS bug, but I would to report this
bug to contribute Ubuntu community.

[Bug 595896] Re: Thinkpad SL510 Mute button not working

2010-12-27 Thread Gumminase
Thank you very much for your suggestios, I tried them both. Here's what
I observed:

The brightness workaround kind of does the trick, but it simply
switches off the lower half of the brightness steps, i.e. without the
workaround I could dim the display even darker. I think one should
rather adjust the OSD instead of cutting out half of the functionality.

Sadly the mute key still does not work at all.

[Bug 632048] Re: PS2 keyboad and mouse lockup

I had the same problem with a P7P55D-E-Premium mother board running 64 bit

[Bug 693337] Re: Menus for choosing language should have one option per available translation

[Bug 693337] Re: Menus for choosing language should have one option per available translation

2010-12-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hi David,

The idea is about _refraining_ from showing all the locales, both in GDM
and in language-selector's Language tab. (The tab in language-selector
for other locale settings is the place for showing all the locales.) At
the same time, the variants should be added to the GDM options as per
bug 408474.

Right now I have four installed languages: English, Swedish, German and
Catalan. While 'locale -a | grep \.utf8' lists 29 locales, running the
lang-list.pl script gives me:

caCatalan
ca...@valenciaCatalan (Spain - Valencia)
enEnglish
en_AU English (Australia)
en_CA English (Canada)
en_NZ English (New Zealand)
en_GB English (United Kingdom)
en_US English (United States)
deGerman
svSwedish

These are some of my questions for the time being:

* Would this be a suitable approach for determining available languages
  for message translation?

* Is listing the /usr/share/locale-langpack directory a safe way to
find available translations, or is there more into it?

* As regards languages with more than one translation: When the country
is not specified, does it matter which of the locales that is
assigned to the LC_MESSAGES environment variable? If it does, how do
we determine the main dialect of respective language?

/ Gunnar

[Bug 621265] Re: Slow Wireless Connection in Intel 3945abg

2010-12-27 Thread Radosław Piliszek
I started by fixing Windows. Seems it was using a buggy driver. Now it has
proper speeds (around 3MBytes/s).
So there is now a base for comparison.

I will test reverting the 1st and then 2nd commit again, taking into
account that speed decrease isn't always instant - I just experienced
it. Launched Kubuntu 10.10 and whoa, it's OK, I went out and after
coming back - what the... (speed around 3 Mbit/s not MBytes/s)

My notebook isn't a speed daemon - recompilation takes a lot of time.

I'll post results today - I hope.

[Bug 694707] [NEW] database doesn't get purged during purge

2010-12-27 Thread /usr/local/dick
Public bug reported:

When documenting the installation of slapd on Lucid, I often need to go back to
a clean default install. I do this by:
apt-get -y purge slapd apt-get install slapd

It seems that purging does not remove /var/lib/ldap, so after re-
installation old database stuff is hanging around.

Hence, you receive all kinds of 'duplicate' warnings when trying to add
things to an alleged 'clean' install.

Expected behavior: 'apt-get purge slapd' purges everything, including
/var/lib/ldap.

FYI, this is the only ldap related package I had installed, so
/var/lib/ldap is not used by other packages.

When documenting the installation of slapd on Lucid, I often need to go back
to a clean default install. I do this by:
  apt-get -y purge slapd apt-get install slapd

It seems that purging does not remove /var/lib/ldap, so after re-
installation old database stuff is hanging around.

- Hence, you receive all kinds of 'duplicate' warning when trying to add
- thing to an alleged 'clean' install.
+ Hence, you receive all kinds of 'duplicate' warnings when trying to add
+ things to an alleged 'clean' install.
+
+ Expected behavior: 'apt-get purge slapd' purges everything, including
+ /var/lib/ldap.
+
+ FYI, this is the only ldap related package I had installed, so
+ /var/lib/ldap is not used by other packages.

[Bug 573708] Re: apache crashes when .mo files are updated

2010-12-27 Thread Danilo unprivileged Segan
I am asking because php-gettext falls back on the native gettext library
provided by PHP if it's available. php-gettext would only provide
gettext-like calls when system-installed PHP doesn't have gettext
support compiled in, and that's rarely the case (judging by your
packages list, you are probably using Fedora, Debian or Ubuntu, and
gettext _is_ natively compiled in on them).

According to http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.gettext.php that's
built-in PHP gettext function (or alias thereof). If you are seeing a
crash, you should report it against PHP or Apache (I am not sure which).

Also note that php-gettext is pure PHP and wouldn't really be able to
crash Apache process itself without PHP or Apache being buggy.

The only bug in php-gettext is the confusing name: in retrospective, it
shouldn't have been named php-gettext when there is a PHP gettext
library included in PHP (http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.gettext.php).
It's now a bit late to change it.

t...@eee:~/src/radio/fl$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

This is in spite of WLAN being turned on. If the WLAN switch is off
wlan0 disappears completely. With rt2860sta or ndiswrapper, this works.

Let me know if you want me to do anything else although it may be a day
or two before I can do it.

Used to work great. Now it's broken.

[Bug 524447] Re: virsh save is very slow

Will a fix for this go into maverick?

This is quite critical for using kvm/libvirt for virtual server hosting
on maverick.

[Bug 672873] Re: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC

2010-12-27 Thread unsound
For eveyone's convenience, I uploaded an 'endian-fixed' version of libglib to
my web site:
http://www.catacombae.org/glibfix-ppc/libglib2.0-0_2.26.0-0ubuntu1_powerpc.deb

I only applied the patch specific to endianness
(fe225e7e7c7424fbfbdeb63c41db63c21f8f7751) to produce this build.
However I think it would make a lot of sense to completely forward to
upstream version 2.26.1 as there are more fixes in there.

** Patch added: Patch that fixes the endianness issues in libglib 2.26.
