@Andreas, Yes, I am using Postfix + LDAP, but I worked around this problem by running a local slapd that syncrepl's the relevant DB's over SSL, and then configured postfix to use ldap://127.0.0.1. It's far from elegant, but it does have the additional benefit that mail can still be accepted, even in the event the central LDAP server occasionally doesn't answer. Looking at the kernel log it would appear that apparmor is blocking access to /etc/mysql/my.cnf. It looks like you have tried a number of things to resolve this problem; however I think that the original cause of the issue may have been that the InnoDB file locations in /etc/mysql/my.cnf where outside of the apparmor profile and hence rw access to them was denied. If possible I think that its worth trying to purge the packages and re- install using the following commands: sudo apt-get purge mysql-server-5.1 sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.1 This should ensure that you have an up-to-date base apparmor configuration. /etc/mysql/my.cnf is installed by mysql-common so this should leave your configuration intact - however this does mean that mysql will fail to start during the setup phase of the install. Please can you look for a file called /etc/passwd.lock - if this is present please remove and re-attempt the installation of mysql-sever-5.1: sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.1 You can also see if another process has the file locked by using the fuser command: fuser /etc/passwd I think that its unlikely that this will return anything, but if it does please can you append the information about the process locking the file to this bug report; you could try killing the process and re- installing as described above. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It looks like a local installation of PostgreSQL is impacting the correct operation of winbindd - as you can see in the error report its trying to use libraries in /opt/PostgreSQL/psqlODBC/lib/ which are not the Ubuntu supplied versions of these libraries (which would reside in /usr/lib). Have you enabled this additional location by adding a configuration file into /etc/ld.conf.d? It looks like your local PostgreSQL installation and winbindd might not co-exist that well on the same server. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It was a little unclear from the original bug report; does /var/www exist on this installation? I've not been able to re-produce the same error unless this directory is actually completely missing or is a file. Looking at the list of installed php packages it would appear that you are running this alongside Apache - please could you confirm whether this is the case. Hi Florian The 'restart' and 'force-reload' commands both stop and start the amavis daemon which would explain why you have seen similar behaviour from both commands. I suspect that this is caused by the port not being fully released before the new instance of the daemon tries to bind to the port - this condition would result in this type of message. Symptomatically I could reproduce this issue by stopping amavis, using netcat to listen on port 10024 and then starting amavis. Unfortunately that does not tell us what is causing this issue. The kpartx udev rule runs modprobe -Qba dm-multipath every time a
device mapper device is added or changed. Not only is this a waste of
resources, but it fails because modprobe has no -Q switch.
It also has this rule:
ENV{DM_STATE}==ACTIVE, ENV{DM_UUID}==dmraid-*, \
RUN+=/sbin/kpartx -a -p -part /dev/$kernel
This kpartx command should not be run because dmraid already creates the
partition device, but it isn't run anyhow because the rule matches on
dmraid-* but dmraid devices have an id of the form DMRAID-*. Note
the difference in case.

The it87 module survives sleeping and waking, but running sensors from a shell window after waking shows the default limits and all calculations are gone. Running sudo sensors -s manually restores these. To prevent this behavior, I had to drop a script in /etc/pm/sleep.d to run sensors -s on thaw.
