Re: [Bug 736757] Re: [SRU] PANIC (pid 18442): internal error in winbindd

2011-05-23 Thread Michael Schwingen
To all who would like to see this released into lucid-updates, we need
to have some verification of bug #558793 as well, since both of them are
included in the package currently in -proposed.

We just migrated our AD Servers to 2008 this weekend, and had the problems
described in #558793 (according to my colleagues who did the migration).

Also, one Linux server that was still running the release version of
10.04.02 had intermittent problems authenticating users (but no winbind
crashes).

Both problems went away after upgrading to the -proposed-upgrades versions
of samba+winbind.

[Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server

2011-05-23 Thread gerti
@Clint,
yes, I know about the problem, if the system-clock is too way off. But
that was not the case on my machine - at most a minute or so.
And no, while installing and doing the first boots of the new 11.4,
there were no connection problems.
And yes, unless somebody rewrote the code for the NTP-daemon, which have
worked well for so many years, its the setup-interface, that needs a
little rework (amongst other modules ?)

BTW, what really irks me is, that when I run Windows 7 (have multi-boot
with Grub), which I do every fortnight to keep up with the security- and
important updates - takes 2 - 5 hours every time - the clock is spot on,
right from the GUI shows up (!)

regards gerti

Hi Jesus, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report!

I'm sorry but we don't quite have the resources to support bug reports
in more languages than English. You may want to try using Google
Translate on the page, which works quite well for me.

Your error seems to be that bind is failing to start. Can you look in
/var/log/syslog for any errors that may have happened when starting
named or bind and paste them here, otherwise we won't be able to
determine what caused the failure.

Marking Incomplete pending response.

flaccid, its not Invalid as a bug, its just that its not actually a
bug in the packages which have a status of Invalid. Its set that way
to help developers avoid going down the same dead-ends that triagers
and previous developers have gone down before. Please note that it is
marked as Confirmed in at least one package, network-manager, which is
where the focus of any dev work should go.

Its an old bug because its hard to solve. We're paying quite a bit
of attention to shutdown this cycle, so it should at least get some
attention.

[Bug 785668] Re: bonding inside a bridge does not update ARP correctly when bridged net accessed from within a VM

2011-05-23 Thread Louis Bouchard
Following your suggestions, I modified my /etc/network/interfaces
added the STP options to my test environment. Following that, I am now
able to ping to the remote system using the following bonding modes :

* 802.3ad (4)
* tlb (5)
* alb (6)

For unknown reasons, I'm still unable to use balance-rr unlike your
setup. But that might not be much of an issue as those modes listed
above might be sufficient. I must go check that. And now, the two VMs
are able to ping each other.

One thing regarding your listed /etc/network/interfaces : I think that
there is a typo as 'bond_mode active-rr' is not a support bonding mode.

[Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown

2011-05-23 Thread tuttle
This is really a show-stopper and spoils the otherwise solid solution to
use Ubuntu and KVM for virtualization.

Why did nobody propose yet to shut down the VMs by the qemu-kvm script?
I think stop qemu-kvm should try to shutdown all running kvms and kill
them after a timeout, independently of libvirt. This would also work for
instance, if libvirtd has been stopped before for other reasons and then
the system is rebooted. With the monitor (which is accessible after
libvirtd has been stopped) you can send a system_powerdown command.

At the moment stop qemu-kvm just removes the kvm kernel modules. Maybe
this is the explanation, why the kvm processes get killed? (Well,
normally not, the modprobe -r should not succeed, as long as the module
is in use. I cannot try it at the moment.)

[Bug 786939] Re: system_powerdown not working for qemu-kvm

2011-05-23 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

  Hi.

The qemu-kvm version in lucid doesn't respond to system_powerdown.

My guess is that its related to the bug reported in:
  http://www.mail-archive.com/kvm@vger.kernel.org/msg42872.html
+
+ SRU Justification:
+ 1. Impact: cannot system_shutdown freebsd
+ 2. How bug was addressed: A commit from the upstream git tree was
cherrypicked. Three earlier patches were pulled as well so that the patch
would easily apply.
+ 3. Patch: see debdiff attached
+ 4. TEST CASE: try system_shutdown in freebsd guest under kvm on a lucid host.
+ 5. Regression potential: these patches are pulled from upstream git and are
present in natty, so they should be safe. However, since they were
cherrypicked, it is possible that interactions due to other patches not being
applied could cause a problem, so normal workloads very much need to be tested.

Regarding your request for /etc/modprove.d/bonding.conf, there is no
such file on my test system. Let me know if you still require the xml

Right, sorry, that's obsolete as of hardy, sorry.

Let me know if you still require the xml

[Bug 787091] [NEW] Unable to use USB device in KVM quest

2011-05-23 Thread Royston Carter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

Ubuntu 10.04 Server:

I have been trying for some considerable time to get a Windows XP guest
to recognise a USB Canon printer. I have searched google endlessly and
applied a number of changes to apparmor profiles. I am still not able to
get the guest to recognise that there a USB device attached. I was
originally getting repeated messages in kern.log as below but the
apparmor changes did resolve these:

May 22 08:01:51 vmserver kernel: [424696.858434] type=1503
audit(1306047711.654:81239): operation=open pid=19695 parent=1
profile=libvirt-629433c8-3714-561b-8e91-4a8a9bb65b9f
requested_mask=r:: denied_mask=r:: fsuid=0 ouid=0
name=/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:05.0/:02:00.0/usb8/devnum

I am now left with messages in the VM log file as follows which I cannot
find a solution for:

char device redirected to /dev/pts/5
usb_create: no bus specified, using usb.0 for usb-host
husb: open device 1.4
/dev/bus/usb/001/004: Operation not permitted
husb: open device 1.4
/dev/bus/usb/001/004: Operation not permitted
husb: open device 1.4

This is a fairly basic requirement and hopefully a solution already exists.

Hi Ian, thanks for taking the time to file a bug report!

There is no dependency issue above. The post-installation script failed,
as indicated here:

Setting up libapache2-mod-php5 (5.3.2-1ubuntu4.9) ...
dpkg: error processing libapache2-mod-php5 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 20

So dpkg will not configure the rest of the dependent packages until
libapache2-mod-php5 is configured.

The post-installation script, if you haven't removed the package from
your system, should be at

/var/lib/dpkg/info/libapache2-mod-php5.postinst

It most likely had some issue while configuring the module. Error 20 is
generally Not a directory, so probably tried to do an 'rmdir' or
'chdir' on a directory that isn't on your system even though it should
be. That very well could be a bug if its a directory the script should
not expect to automatically be there. You can help us figure out if its
a bug, or if your system has problems causing the issue, by running it
with

sudo sh -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/libapache2-mod-php5.postinst configure
5.3.2-1ubuntu4.9

And pasting the output here.

Marking Incomplete pending response from Ian.

[Bug 786941] Re: Cannot boot from non-existent NIC

2011-05-23 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

The version of qemu-kvm in lucid can't boot from a network card defined
  by -device-parameters.

Its probably the same bug as described in:
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=577851
+
+ SRU Justification:
+ 1. Impact: users cannot boot from network card which is defined with -device
parameters
+ 2. How bug was addressed: a small patchset from upstream was cherrypicked
+ 3. Minimal patch: see attached debdiff
+ 4. TEST CASE: 'qemu-system-x86_64 -device
rtl8139,vlan=0,id=net0,mac=52:54:00:82:41:fd,bus=pci.0,addr=0x4 -net
user,vlan=0,name=hostnet0 -boot n -vnc :1'
+ 5. Regression potential: this patch tweaks a fragile blob of boot parameters
code which we had already previously twiddled to make -boot once work. If
there are regressions, they will likely emerge in the form of different
behavior with 'boot' flags. However the patches are small and simple enough
that regressions appear unlikely.

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2011-05-23 Thread Clint Byrum
So I've done some analysis, and I believe the root of the problem is
that dbus is stopped too early. network-manager stops whenever dbus
stops, because it is needed. We currently stop dbus on runlevel [06]
.. that is too early, because it is needed until after umountnfs runs
as part of the shutdown.

So the solution will be in two parts:

1. we must change netbase so that the 'networking stop' action emits a hook
event, which I'll call deconfiguring-networking, just before it deconfigures
the network.
2. dbus will be changed to 'stop on deconfiguring-networking', and therefore
also need a versioned dependency on the new version of netbase (otherwise it
would not stop).

I am preparing uploads to oneiric that implement these two fixes.

** Also affects: dbus (Ubuntu)

Re: [Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server

2011-05-23 Thread Clint Byrum
Excerpts from gerti's message of Mon May 23 13:22:53 UTC 2011:
 @Clint,
yes, I know about the problem, if the system-clock is too way off. But
that was not the case on my machine - at most a minute or so.

I understand the frustration gerti, and I'm sorry that you're having
problems.

I still don't understand the steps to take to not get the right time. I
have a fresh VM install of 11.04 that was already configured to query NTP
from the network, and it did so flawlessly without changing anything. It
also works fine if I just install ntp on a server, so I really don't
think there's a problem with the ntp package, but maybe I have missed
a step or detail that causes you issues?

Shutdown is definitely on the radar for heavy testing this cycle, and I
hope to have a good solution for this bug soon. The bug in sendsigs
should hopefully become moot as we transition the shutdown to a more

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2011-05-23 Thread Mike Perrin
On a functional level perhaps it is worth considering whether Network
Manager, on stopping, should simply leave the interfaces as currently
configured instead of taking them down. I can make the argument that
Network Manager is a tool to make it easy for the user to control
network interfaces, but Network Manager is not the owner of those
interfaces, the system and user are. If the user makes a connection
using Network Manger and then disables NM, why shouldn't the interface
stay up until the user or a shutdown sequence takes it down?

Re: [Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2011-05-23 Thread Clint Byrum
Excerpts from Mike Perrin's message of Mon May 23 20:28:52 UTC 2011:
On a functional level perhaps it is worth considering whether Network
Manager, on stopping, should simply leave the interfaces as currently
configured instead of taking them down. I can make the argument that
Network Manager is a tool to make it easy for the user to control
network interfaces, but Network Manager is not the owner of those
interfaces, the system and user are. If the user makes a connection
using Network Manger and then disables NM, why shouldn't the interface
stay up until the user or a shutdown sequence takes it down?

Mike thats a great point and I think would be a design change for NM.
It might then be best to bring that up with the upstream developers.

As it stands now, NM does in fact own a network interface that it is
set to manage, and so, we must architect the system around that.

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2011-05-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package dbus - 1.4.8-3ubuntu2

---
dbus (1.4.8-3ubuntu2) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/dbus.upstart: stop on deconfiguring-networking, a new
event emitted during shutdown just before networking is deconfigured.
This is a somewhat obtuse solution to the problem of network-manager
stopping too early. (LP: #211631)
  * debian/control: versioned dependency on netbase that emits the new
deconfiguring-networking event.

Can you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade ? This will

[Bug 784208] Re: SRU: Banshee Community Extensions bugfix release

2011-05-23 Thread Clint Byrum
Chow, please see the comment I added to the banshee bugfix release page.
For the same reasons, I have to reject this upload to natty-proposed.

[Bug 784179] Re: SRU: Banshee bugfix release

2011-05-23 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello Chow. I cannot accept your upload to natty-proposed given our
current SRU process.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

The process requires that stable release updates are minimally invasive,
and that the bugs fixed have clear test cases. The sheer size of the
patch is much too big to accept, and the bugs fixed are all upstream and
not listed in Launchpad at all.

I wonder if Banshee would qualify for a Micro Release Exception

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/MicroReleaseExceptions

That may be a better way to go if there will be similar upstream bug fix
releases at a regular pace.

[Bug 571038] Re: palimpsest crash with libgdu:ERROR:gdu-pool.c:2369:device_recurse: assertion failed: (depth 100)

2011-05-23 Thread Ross Patterson
Regarding #21, I just did fixparts repair on one of the disks I have and
I'm still getting the palimpsest error and it still won't auto mount.
Also remember that I at least can automount the same disk on a different
ubuntu natty system just fine. So it seems likely that there is some
sort of driver/kernel/hardware bug or some configuration problem that
has crept in for some sytems. How do we dig deeper here? I'm tired of
using pmount.  :-)

[Bug 787119] [NEW] xscreensaver blocks guides in gimp

2011-05-23 Thread Peter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

In ubuntu 10.04 and xubuntu 10.04, when I click on rulers in gimp for dragging

Problem solves by killing xscreensaver process. With xscreensaver version 5.13
