[Bug 827798] Re: LXC works without warning regardless if cgroup namespaces are properly available

2011-08-19 Thread Michael Casadevall
Can you be more specific on these security issues?

We don't ship a LSM out of the box (nor is there a quick and easy way to
set one up). LXC is the cloud computing solution for ARM until hardware
virtualization becomes available, and I was unaware of any security
concerns in using it.

[Bug 811273] Re: FTBFS due to libpng (and lesser libjpeg)

2011-08-19 Thread Michael Shadle
I don't consider that correct. It worked fine prior to 11.04.

I consider this a regression, all that needs to be done is add a symlink
in the libpng package and a symlink in libjpeg (possibly depending on
version used) and PHP is happy.

[Bug 814819] Re: [FFE]Update to antlr3 version 3.2

2011-08-19 Thread James Page
The FTBFS issues generated in the drools package can be resolved by re-
generating the language definitions at build time so this should not be
to much of a headache to fix (assuming drools will still be required in
universe).

forked-daapd is not FTBFS due to antlr3 so not relevant to the scope of
this FFE.

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2011-08-19 Thread nutznboltz
You are supposed to be able to use the -N (--nice) option to ntpd but
upstream ntp bug report shows it doesn't work:

http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1230

Testing on 11.04

$ lsb_release -ds
Ubuntu 11.04
$ uname -srv
Linux 2.6.38-10-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 28 15:07:17 UTC 2011
$ ntpd --version
ntpd - NTP daemon program - Ver. 4.2.6p2
$ apt-cache policy ntp | egrep 'Installed|Candidate'
  Installed: 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5.1
  Candidate: 1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1ubuntu5.1

WIthout -N

$ (ps alx | head -1) ; (ps alx | grep ntpd) | grep -v grep
F UID PID PPID PRI NIVSZ RSS WCHAN STAT TTYTIME COMMAND
5 117 1955 1 20 0 38864 2164 poll_s Ss ? 0:00
/usr/sbin/ntpd -p /var/run/ntpd.pid -g -c /var/lib/ntp/ntp.conf.dhcp -u 117:126

With -N

$ (ps alx | head -1) ; (ps alx | grep ntpd) | grep -v grepF UID PID PPID
PRI NIVSZ RSS WCHAN STAT TTYTIME COMMAND
5 117 2915 1 20 0 38736 2096 poll_s Ss ? 0:00
/usr/sbin/ntpd -p /var/run/ntpd.pid -g -N -c /var/lib/ntp/ntp.conf.dhcp -u
117:126

PRI = 20 and NI = 0 in both cases. If -N did anything NI would not be 0

This can be added to the apparmor profile to allow -N option to work:
  capability sys_nice,

Then run:
$ sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.ntpd

I'm preparing an upload for this policy change now.

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2011-08-19 Thread nutznboltz
@Jamie given that the default ntpd configuration is to poll and the
stability of the clock affects the polling interval[1] I would strongly
suggest the default ntpd configuration be adjusted to run with the -N
option since it would cut down on the load of NTP servers if polling was
less frequent. When this scales to the world sizes it does become an
issue.

1. In a nutshell when the clock is stable there is less need for ntpd to check
to see the time on the upstream NTP server so it ratchets back the interval
(decreases frequency) for polling by sleeping longer between checks. See ntp
option maxpoll and minpoll in man ntp.conf to see the controls of the limits
of the polling frequency range. See What is the best polling Interval?

[Bug 827922] Re: On Tomcat6 shutdown web apps are not able to log anything

2011-08-19 Thread James Page
mdxyz - thanks for the test.war - helped alot with confirming this
issue.

I was able to confirm this problem using the init script.

There are two ways of shutting down a running tomcat6 instance:

1) Send it the TERM signal - this is what the init script does through
start-stop-daemon; when tomcat is shutdown this way I see no logging of
any description.

2) Use the /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/shutdown.sh script to connect to the
shutdown port (normally 8005) and initiate the shutdown that way:
shutting down the tomcat6 instance this way results in correct shutdown
logging to /var/log/tomcat6:

19-Aug-2011 14:32:49 org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol pause
INFO: Pausing Coyote HTTP/1.1 on http-8080
19-Aug-2011 14:32:50 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardService stop
INFO: Stopping service Catalina
19-Aug-2011 14:32:50 de.mdiener.test.TestDestroy destroy
WARNING: destroy
19-Aug-2011 14:32:50 org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol destroy
INFO: Stopping Coyote HTTP/1.1 on http-8080

I would suspect that sending the process the TERM signal differs from
initiating a tomcat controlled shutdown; I'll take a look at the source
and see.

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2011-08-19 Thread nutznboltz
The minimum sleep time between ntpd upstream requests is 64 seconds.
With 64000 clients an ntpd server must answer one thousand requests per
second.

If the client ntpd clocks are very stable they will ratchet back to one
request every 1024 seconds (about 17 minutes) so the same 6400 clients
would only make the server process 62.5 requests per second.

[Bug 229632] Re: ntpd should run niced

2011-08-19 Thread nutznboltz
Try with and with out ntpd -N option.

Use ntpq -p or ntpdc -c peers to view the polling interval. Both
reports have a poll column which is the sleep time in seconds between
requests being sent out over the network to the upstream NTP source.

The poll column will eventually change from 64 to 128 then 256 through
1024. This change can take hours or even days to occur as the clock
stabilizes.

Without -N I haven't seen the polling interval get to 1024 on my
systems as process preemption destabilizes ntpd too much.

[Bug 827922] Re: On Tomcat6 shutdown web apps are not able to log anything

2011-08-19 Thread James Page
I suspect this issue is associated with this bug:

 https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=48831

As all shutdown handlers are fired in parallel its possible the logging
handler shutdown hook completes before the Catalina server shutdown hook
resulting in no logging.

[Bug 829628] [NEW] [FFE] Add cgroup-lite package

2011-08-19 Thread Serge Hallyn
Public bug reported:

The cgroup-bin package provides advanced (though racy and not quite
reliable) assignment of tasks to control groups (cgroups) based on
task name, userid, etc. This is pretty heavyweight (adding at least
several seconds to boot and shutdown, and keeping a deamon running
which watches all task creations), and due to its racy nature can
cause bugs with other applications and system functions like
suspend/resume (see bugs 693594, 756499, 598335, 827279, and 828061).

Currently there are applications which depend on cgroups being
mounted, but which have no need for the advanced cgroup management.
Libvirt and lxc are two such applications. However there is currently
nothing which provides just this.

The attached small debdiff adds a very simple package, cgroup-lite,
as an alternative to cgroup-bin which only mounts the cgroups at
boot.

With this package installed, all of the bugs listed above are fixed,
and system boot, shutdown, and overhead are improved.

Since lxc requires cgroups to be set up at boot, it would be far
better if it could depend on cgroup-lite rather than cgroup-bin.

[Bug 829628] Re: [FFE] Add cgroup-lite package

2011-08-19 Thread Stéphane Graber
I can confirm that this fixes the races I saw with cgroup-bin and works
perfectly for me with libvirt, kvm and arkose.

I'd definitely +1 getting this uploaded and replace the current
Recommends on the lxc package from cgroup-bin to cgroup-lite |
cgroup-bin so that both are still allowed but cgroup-lite is preferred.

Subscribing ubuntu-release team to get the FFe reviewed.

If accepted, we'll then update the lxc package accordingly.

Worth noting that both lxc and cgroup-bin are currently in universe,
though the lxc source package is in main (as lxcguest is in main).

[Bug 827372] Re: package apache2.2-common (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-08-19 Thread Ben Howard
Can you please provide steps to reproduce? Using the latest release of
the Natty EC2 images, apt-get install apache2.2-common works
correctly.

The root cause here is that the group adm is missing and is provided
in the base-passwd.

[Bug 827798] Re: LXC works without warning regardless if cgroup namespaces are properly available

2011-08-19 Thread Serge Hallyn
Hi Dave,

the priority of this (admittedly set by me) is wishlist. But you're
targetting it. Please do bump the priority if you feel that's the thing
to do. Otherwise it's unlikely I'll get to it.

Note that this shouldn't require any deep knowledge, so anyone else can
jump in and make the patch to lxc-checkconfig.

Clarification on comment #2 -- base-passwd provides the group adm by
default. In order for this package to be failing installation, the group
adm must have been removed from the system.

[Bug 694029] Re: kvm guests become unstable after a while

2011-08-19 Thread Serge Hallyn
Hi Jamie,

Do you think the priority of this should be raised?

Has this been reproduced on anything that is not a thinkpad x201 or
similar?

I've been meaning to reproduce this on the qa rig, but firewall
prevented me from bzr fetching the vm-tools suite. A script
relying only on kvm itself should certainly be able to reproduce
this, but i've not gotten around to writing that.

2011-08-19 Thread Ben Howard
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 829089] Re: clamd scanning mimedefang temp files blocked by apparmor

2011-08-19 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I'm not up on current mimedefang, but doing something like this would be
even better:

  /var/spool/MIMEDefang/mdefang-*/Work/ r,
  /var/spool/MIMEDefang/mdefang-*/Work/** r,

If mimedefang's spool directory only contains the files to be scanned,
then the easier to maintain '/var/spool/MIMEDefang/** r,' is totally
fine. If there is other stuff in there, may be it is worth using what I
suggested above, but weighed against maintenance/fragility, maybe not.

COMMANDS seems to contain the SMTP commands, HEADERS the actual email
headers, INPUTMSG is the complete email (headers included), RESULTS and
tmp/ I'm not sure what they are and Work/ contains the email body and
any attachments it may have.

I would guess that clamd is only scanning Work/* , but I can't say for

it).
