This seems to be also related to kernel version.
Booting with a 2.6.38 kernel I can remove the changes to the
lightdm.conf file and autofs works fine.
As another data point, with a linux kernel 3.0 on a Debian wheezy
machine and a similar autofs setup I get a similar problem with autofs
failing.
I understand that actually mapping a device name from hypervisor to
guest is actually impossible, but hopefully we can come up with a better
guess.
Its unfortunate that libvirt doesn't even seem to be using the dev= as
a suggestion of device ordering along the virtio bus. Instead, I'm
guessing
The default behaviour of vsftpd's ssl_enable option is disabled. I
recommend setting this bug to Importance: Low since it would only affect
users who change the default behaviour.

Fixed for me using: touch /etc/apparmor.d/disable/usr.sbin.libvirtd
and then reboot. Also had a non-existent CDROM defined under the
Details section which I removed. I don't think it had anything to do
with the original problem. I removed the file created above and rebooted
and things were back

I dont know if it should be against libvirt rather than lxc. lxcguest
does things to make ubuntu work as an lxc guest. I figured it was at
least relevant.

Is the following sufficient (no clue really, I've never been too intimate with
upstart scripts)?
