Confirming that this bug still exists in natty (facter 1.5.8-2ubuntu2) but has since been fixed upstream. The issue exists in the can_connect? method and has little to do with the actual URL elsewhere, though changing the meta-data URL to use /latest instead of /2008-02-01 provides a few more additional facts about network interfaces, security group and host names (as of today, at least). ** Changed in: facter (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to facter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/732953 Title: can_connect function inside ec2.rb always return false To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/facter/+bug/732953/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

First, above all else, Hal is cleaning house in ntp_intres.c while I'm stacking kindling under the corners to burn it to the ground once 4.2.6 is out. Second, after 6 weeks in a RC cycle, is it really important to fix the bugs this fixes and provide the improvements this provides for 4.2.6? A bunch of new code which we get to debug in -stable is unappealing to me. Assuming you get past those concerns and proceed, other items I note: A) ntpd.h reverts a recent change adding const to extern char *chrootdir; B) ntp_intres.c has hints.ai_protocol = 17; and a comment about the header that value was sniped from. That should simply come out, setting ai_protocol portably is nontrivial and we don't need it, do we? C) getaddrinfo() returning EAI_SYSTEM was retried before, now it's considered permanent. If I were writing from scratch I'd do the same, but given it has behaved that way for years, was there a good reason to change? D) There are a dozen or so places where the body of an if statement continues on the same line as the conditional, NTP style is to put the body on the following line indented. E) In doconfigure() there's an apparently overlooked block of test code in column 1 under if (0) that should come out or be cleaned up to a #ifdef SOME_TEST_MACRO. F) A few lines later in doconfigure(), there's a questionable use of in6addr_any when returning a v4 result, which depends on whether the system was built with IPv6 support. Why not use NULL as is done for the v4 address when returning a v6 result? Hal, I'm troubled posting these comments. On the one hand, I'm thrilled you've taken an interest in getting ntpd DNS resolution right, and you've put a lot of effort into developing and testing your changes. On the other hand, well, what I said up top. The timing is just horrible. I really do want to replace ntp_intres wholesale with a callback-based getaddrinfo() clone that will call back a given function when the results are available, and that will mean most of your intres work will be tossed. [Bug 877458] [NEW] MySQL undefined references
Public bug reported: I just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. I use a shell script to compile and make CGIs that looks like this: g++ $(mysql_config --cflags) $(mysql_config --libs) $1.cpp chmod 755 a.out mv a.out /home/lts/public_html/cgi-bin/$1.cgi This has been working for years, and now throws undefined reference errors to every MySQL function I use. I used Synaptic (after I had to download it!) to remove MySqL server, client, libraries, etc. in case the upgrade got messed up, but it doesn't help. I have a development project that's now dead in the water. I have a second PC and plan to put either 11.4 or the LTS version on it, but I'm hoping I can get 11.10 running before it comes to this. We should aim to target some complex Ubuntu server deployment scenarios for regular automated testing during the release cycle. This could be implemented either in the cloud or using virtualization; ensemble and cobbler+puppet might form part of the solution. 2) Automated Boot testing As we make changes to the boot/shutdown sequence of the server, and migrate init.d scripts to upstart jobs, we need some continuous integration testing to make sure it continues to work. We should take advantage of the automated testing framework to install, reboot, shutdown, start, remove, and repeat with all packages that are changed. We should also automate this testing with all of the available tasks on the install CDs. In addition, we should collect metrics on boot time and how each package affects it. hggdh: * we need to test iso install * want to do a single install and create gold copy * need test do-release-upgrade High Level Test Objectives: - a) Deployment Testing: i) ISO Image Proving RAID testing (N.B. For raid testing also see: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-o-software-raid and/or etherpad until blueprint updated) LVM testing Multipath and encryption Existing ISO testing framework should deal with this. ii) AMI Image Proving Existing ec2 testing framework should deal with this. b) Package Removal Testing: - install services - start services - check services - stop services - uninstall services - re-install same services - start re-check services c) Phase 2 - Service Proving Deployment of service and pluggable testing Deploy through orchestra and/or ensemble - which would allow testing of recipes and formulas as well (+1) Framework required for executing tests once deployment complete; mcollective could be used to distribute and execute tests; maybe still use python unittests; d) Automated Boot Testing: Minimal install - startup and shutdown OK Full install - startup and shutdown OK Complete upgrade and then re-test. e) Upgrade Testing: Lucid-Maverick-Natty for example. Need to catchup with mvo in this area - suspect some sort of gold-copy type setup might make sense. f) Recovery Testing: Recovery Mode Testing: Complex Deployment Scenarios: Wiki + Database + Memcache + Load Balancer Bridging and bonding of network interfaces Networking File Systems Openstack Deployment test Launchpad Samba + LDAP or Kerberos Backend Backup solutions. Re: [Bug 874518] Re: ssh with kerberos fails after upgrade to 11.10
Hi Clint, I'm not sure if anyone is working on this, but I just wanted to let you (or whomever is working on it) that I've decided to scrap 11.10 and do a fresh install of 11.04 from scratch. After installing kerberos: sudo apt-get install krb5-user sudo apt-get install libpam-krb5 and replacing the /etc/krb5.conf with one friendly to the lab I work for, I can now again ssh into where I need to. The ticket authentication is communicated successfully via gssapi-with-mic. I hope you all are able to find this bug in 11.10 and I look forward to trying the newest version again in a few months. There were some new features I really liked in 11.10, especially the new ALT-Tab window switcher. That makes juggling a dozen emacs windows in a single workspace much easier (one of the very few downsides to the 11.04 Unity version). Thanks for the help. Jason On Sun, Oct 16, 2011 at 1:31 PM, Jason Nett jasonnet...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Clint, Your summary is correct. I tried upgrading my home desktop from 11.04 to 11.10 and one of the first things I check when I do this is whether ssh and kerberos are working properly because I often work from home on this computer. I also have a laptop with 11.04 that I have NOT upgraded to 11.10 for comparison. As far as I can tell, kerberos is functioning properly and the errors I posted earlier indicate that my destop (11.10) now cannot communicate the kerberos ticket while ssh'ing via gssapi-with-mic, whereas my laptop (11.04) does communicate the ticket successfully with gssapi-with-mic. I've scoured the files in /username/.ssh/ and in /etc/ssh/ for any discrepant settings and even tried outright replacing such files (not .ssh/known_hosts, of course, but I did try deleting and regenerating it), but nothing produces a different result. Jason On Sun, Oct 16, 2011 at 12:30 PM, Clint Byrum cl...@fewbar.com wrote: Ok Jason, thanks for all the leg work. I think at this point we need to try and reproduce your setup to try and address the bug. To be clear, Your client is on 11.10, and can obtain kerberos tickets fine, but cannot log into any SSH service that normally would accept these tickets. I tried copying over all ssh related files from my laptop (with a properly function ssh in 11.04) and replace what is on my 11.10 malfunctioning OS, but that did not help. 4. I tried deleting the .ssh/known_hosts file. [Bug 876968] Re: host Apparmor rules are applied to guests in spite of guests loading new rules
Well I won't agree the guest shouldn't have its own policy (it depends on your use case), but I do agree the host should be able to set a domain to protect it self from the guest, but until AppArmor supports policy stacking the solution is either or. The solution depends on what confinement is sought. 1. If the guest is to have its own policy, then the host needs to create a new policy namespace, and then it needs to transition the guest to the new namespace. Guest policy will then be loaded into the new namespace, and will not generally* conflict with system policy. Setting up apparmor namespaces is a little clunky at the moment (a better interface is coming). You create a new dummy profile, and load using apparmor_parser -n namespace profile This creates the namespace if it doesn't exist, and loads the dummy profile (the host can inject profiles into the container namespace). You then enter the namespace using the aa_change_profile call from libapparmor, unfortunately the command line interface to this isn't available in current releases, but I can provide the simple perl program. I would recommend transitioning into the unconfined profile (created by default as part of namespace creation) instead of the dummy, this allows the guest to behave as it would for normal system boot. Instead of documenting the everything in detail here I am working on updating the wiki, and will drop a link to it here. * The policy doesn't conflict but there are places where the guest can see that it is in a namespace. Eg. Messages from the kernel audit framework. 2. If the host is to confine the guest and disallow it from loading policy. You need to create a profile for the guest, it can be very broad but it should not allow capability mac_admin. Long term the solution will be to use, apparmor namespaces as in 1, but with the aa_stack_policy command. Which will allow the host to retain its own policy and allow the guest to have a separate policy set that is controlled by the host. The goal is to allow a fake stacking for P, where the host policy is the unconfined state. This will allow for the same functionality of 1 but provide a stable api moving forward for when policy stacking is fully supported. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876968 Title: host Apparmor rules are applied to guests in spite of guests loading new rules To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/876968/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 876910] Re: When starting open ssh server without host keys in /etc/ssh/, the keys are not automatically generated.
Hello Clint, No, upstart jobs are designed to be short and pointed ways to define how a daemon starts and stops. /etc/init.d is only for backward compatibility in an upstart system. The ssh init.d script was left the way it is because of chroot jails for sshd, but it is not necessary for normal operation. OOO! *Light Bulb*! this makes sense. Thanks for setting me straight. Yeah, thats probably better. What was I thinking? ;) Sometimes it's more fun to do things the hard way. :) Not sure why this isn't scalable... its not that heavy of a command and it should be idempotent. I can't automate it. If I Can't automate it, can't scale it well. The problem is, for every new VM, to enable SSH this requires the SysOp to: -- Log into the Host Machine, -- Determine the VNC port -- VNC to the the VM, -- Run the command. With enough volume, these four steps could make for a full time job. It's not the command itself, but the work surrounding the command. I do think its a bit odd that they are generated at install time rather than whenever they are missing, I'm glad, I thought I was having a derp moment. Also, checking for these files at startup adds fault tolerance, would you agree? but either way, its a well defined behavior and so can be worked with fairly easily by removing and regenerating the keys at first boot. An upstart job like this would probably work: start on starting ssh task exec [ -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key ] || ssh-keygen -t dsa -b 4096 -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key -q Is this supposed to be all on one line? Causes ssh to hang when calling: start ssh Also, is there a variable that tells Ubuntu if it is first boot? What was I thinking? ;) Sometimes it's more fun to do things the hard way. :) Not sure why this isn't scalable... its not that heavy of a command and it should be idempotent. I can't automate it. If I Can't automate it, can't scale it well. The problem is, for every new VM, to enable SSH this requires the SysOp to: -- Log into the Host Machine, -- Determine the VNC port -- VNC to the the VM, -- Run the command. With enough volume, these four steps could make for a full time job. It's not the command itself, but the work surrounding the command. I think you mean you don't know how to auotmate it. :) Several ideas: * pre-boot, Mount each VM's filesystem, chroot into it and run dpkg-reconfigure openssh-server. * Use cloud-init's 'nocloud' feature to seed this reconfigure in on first boot. I do think its a bit odd that they are generated at install time rather than whenever they are missing, I'm glad, I thought I was having a derp moment. Also, checking for these files at startup adds fault tolerance, would you agree? I suppose that is one way to look at it. SSH is critical enough that I'd consider pushing for this behavior. Maybe there's a reason that the maintainers diverted from the standard behavior though. but either way, its a well defined behavior and so can be worked with fairly easily by removing and regenerating the keys at first boot. Causes ssh to hang when calling: start ssh Maybe not, possibly try removing the exec and doing script ... end script Also, is there a variable that tells Ubuntu if it is first boot? This could potentially solve the problem since the .qcow2 will overwrite this variable. cloud-init is useful for doing things on first boot in a structured, repeatable way. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876910 Title: When starting open ssh server without host keys in /etc/ssh/, the keys are not automatically generated. [Bug 875883] Re: apache2 cannot start because /var/log/apache2/ doesn't exist
Umm..Oops. I had my logging going to a tmpfs to decrease SSD wear. However, this is the only service that fails to start.
