[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher
See, thats the thing ... as i wrote, i really like Unity, for various reasons, but especially because i've got the most available screen estate for my applications as i run most stuff maximized and since the application menus are merged into the top bar, i actually win about 3% available screen estate. As i said, the only thing that really bugs me is that the sidebar unintentionally pops up all the time and blocks me from clicking on icons to the far left (like the back button of firefox, all the open/close folder icons in eclipse/gedit/Outlook Web Access etc.) and that happens far too often. It is just a very user unfriendly behavior, which i would like to be able to change and I wouldn't need a user interface for that. I would be happy forever (in that regard) if there was something like a hidden setting, command line switch, environment variable to be exported or whatever, just so i can move this annoyance to the bottom of the screen. As for the mentioned alternatives, XFCE is just the only viable alternative for me, as i never liked Gnome at all and KDE is in my opinion the worst of them all (and yes i've tried them all, i even most of them installed right now just so i could see whether things have changed for the better or worse). However, I really prefer Unity to all of them, if just that launcher bar wouldn't interfere so much with me working. It sits at the wrong position. I mean i totally understand the urge to compete with other companies, platforms, designs and architectures and to provide the best possible user experience, but seriously, *all of them* competitors grant me that little freedom - to move the tool- and launchbars to where I as a user/customer want them to be. Also, switching back/reinstalling to a 32bit OS just so i can use a hacked sidebar instead? You can't be serious. And never hiding the sidebar is obviously also not a alternative. I (like millions of other people) am using a notebook and you probably know that you never can have enough screen estate (and as i already said, i get more of that with unity than with any other desktop). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/668415 Title: Movement of Unity launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/668415/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 885988] [NEW] The software center Ain't really working at all...
Public bug reported: This does not really affect only myself, but also my little sisters computer. You can't really browse software center, it's REALLY slow... Also there is two banners at the top, it shows "OpenShot" and "Braid" -- it did that on my sisters computer a few days ago too. But, you can't click these banners; and I believe that the intention is that you should be able to do so and get directed to some program descriptor thingie. Also, I tried to search for "OpenShot" -- but the software center did not respond to that command (it did not hung up). I have not been able to install a single program with the software center, so I've been forced to use the terminal; Which is not a too big deal for me, but really, my sister is 11yrs and I can't really expect that she will grok the terminal anytime soon (I've tried to learn her git via the terminal once, which did not work out too well as she did not want to type any commands herself. Luckily, there were a few graphical frontends. I installed like five and told her to use to one she likes the most). [Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher
@Robin J. Rogge "And since i am running the 64bit version of Ubuntu, i actually have only 2 choices: live with this situation until it gets properly fixed or use XFCE." I'm not sure what you're thinking, but in addition to ubuntu-desktop (Unity and Unity 2D), and xubuntu-desktop (Xfce4), gnome-shell (GNOME 3 with the GNOME Shell instead of Unity), gnome-fallback (GNOME 3 Fallback, which looks like the old GNOME 2 interface), lubuntu-desktop (LXDE), and kubuntu-desktop (KDE4 Plasma) all work on both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Ubuntu. There are no graphical interfaces packaged for Ubuntu that work just for one or the other architecture. You might be thinking about there used to be only a 32-bit version of the Lubuntu desktop install CD. Well, (a) there are both 32-bit and 64-bit Lubuntu live CD's now, as of Lubuntu 11.10 (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu), and (b) it has always been possible (and pretty easy) to install a 64-bit Lubuntu system by installing a minimal command-line only system (either from the alternate install CD or the minimal install CD, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/AlternateInstall and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall) and then installing the lubuntu-desktop package. And anyway, if you already have Ubuntu installed, you don't have to reinstall to get a new interface--just install one (or more) of the packages listed above. If you decide you want to continue using Unity / Unity 2D, then you might consider setting the launcher to *never* hide. Then you'd have less usable screen space, but at least the launcher wouldn't be popping out at you when you don't want it to.

[Bug 885027] Re: SUID Mount Helper has 5 Major Vulnerabilities
@Matt: I am not comfortable modifying pmount. What guarantee would I posses that my modifications did not introduce an exploit. In contrast the mount helper is 300 lines of C code, much easier to review and modify, as this bug demonstrates. Similar problems exist with udisks. Adding something as a dependency that is not bundled is not workable, since the calibre standalone installer cannot enforce a dependency requirement. This is obviously not the case for a distro calibre package. @Jason: I look forward to the updated exploit. If/when you attach it, I will review if it can be closed. Re: [Bug 885553] Re: Attack mode not offered in advanced game.
Hi I am using the latest 16 build. I started a new game with the map Checkered. I had the Barbarians at an aggressive AI setting. I used the aristocrat mode. Pervious game I had the Barbarians with the moderate setting aristocrat mode. In that game I could not attack the Barbarians no matter how close they where. In the aggressive setting I advanced my territory with the basic guard buildings. When I got to some where in the middle where there were large rock outcroppings I butted up against the Barbarians. I didn't attack, I just started building more guard towers in the area to try and get an attack advantage. But the barbarians struck first and conquered one of the guard buildings. When I attacked it in an attempt to take over I lost more soldiers and buildings. I quite trying to push it as I did not have the infrastructure yet to get more troops. The Barbarians did not try to attack the remaining guard buildings so I concentrated on building up farms, mines, smelters and more wares. When I got to the point where I was producing more soldiers I started building the large Castle emplacements. When I felt I was strong enough to attempt an attack I found the only paces I could do so was around the initial attack. I retook all that I lost. I found I could only attack sentry buildings but the overwhelming hoards of my soldiers would conquer everything around the sentrys. As I got closer to HQ or one of their large military structures I could only attack those buildings, but after doing so everything around them would collapse. I won the game! Another bug I found was with the fishers and fish farms. Initially in the game I got them going around HQ. But after I had expanded I tried to establish them around another lake area to the East. They would never get to producing anything, only those around HQ. I tried to establish new farms around HQ and they too would not produce. Since I am new to this game I don't know if the problem repeats in other map arenas. I am running the windows version on Vista Home Premium. I have 3 GB or ram. It gets boggy if I expand too big. The game is nice and could be much more if it was like a civilization game where the winning race could expand and evolve perhaps encountering other new opposing tribes. they could advance through research and development. Just a though for the future. I do not yet have the money to donate for the future possible of the game. The game could have squalls as separate programs if youall decide to market it bigtime. [Bug 885909] Re: Boot process hangs in Ubuntu 11.10 server after upgrade
In searching the net, it has become obvious that Ubuntu 11.10 is severely bug ridden, that the status of bugs that prevent the system fully starting is trivialised, and there doesn't look to be a fix anytime soon. My system is 11.10 server, it has one external network interface, eth0 using on board hardware. There has never been any doubt that the network interface is actually starting and working fine. This cannot be an unusual configuration. That said, I have looked at why failsafe.conf is delaying things. It looks like it provides a safety net for other failures: rc-sysinit.conf contains start on (filesystem and static-network-up) or failsafe-boot So, perhaps it is filesystem or static-network-up that are the problem? network-interface.conf is the only job that contains emits static- network-up, but it doesn't seem to actually emit it. Two things I discover, it appears that the pre start script exits ungracefully, and it doesn't seem to emit net-device-up (needed by nmbd for instance) or static-network-up (seemingly needed to allow the boot to complete). If some of this seems uncertain, it is because upstart is totally new to me, and the system is short on documentation, and it is not my objective to be a Ubuntu sysprog. But, this might help others to develop a fix to allow their system to boot fully. [Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher
I just wonder that the back button issue has been addressed only three times within this discussion. Today I counted how many times the sidebar stepped on my nerves by appearing and blocking the back button of my web browser and the total number so far is 43. I think, the main problem is just that i am using 11.10 on a Notebook which happens to have a touch pad just like pretty much every notebook out there and these things aren't really precise. And since i am running the 64bit version of Ubuntu, i actually have only 2 choices: live with this situation until it gets properly fixed or use XFCE. And the worst thing about this, i really like Unity a lot, but this sidebar issue completely ruins it for me. This thing constantly pops up and i never wanted it to be there in the first place and i cannot even move it as there is not even a hidden option to move it to the bottom (which is in my opinion the only acceptable place). Microsoft tried to do the same thing with Longhorn and guess what: they discovered that having a sidebar on either side (left or right) just doesn't work.

1) It does not work out of the box on all distros (it needs configuration) Contribute whatever magic you used to work around doing this configuration yourself. 2) It may not even be installed on some distros, for example, it isn't installed by default on gentoo. I'm certain that Calibre isn't installed by default. [Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's "Sync to Vblank" makes display stutter/slow with some drivers (like fglrx)
@quequotion, smspillaz was just being very cautious and backed out the first version of the fix because it changed a couple of header files at a time when ABI compatibility was required. While I argued that the header changes did not affect ABI compatibility, it is now irrelevant. Because we have now replaced it with a similar fix that does not require changing any header files. And it's easier for compiz developers (and maintainers of distros that use compiz) to trust that ABI compatibility is retained if no headers have changed. In summary, not a problem. All fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/763005 Title: Compiz's "Sync to Vblank" makes display stutter/slow with some drivers (like fglrx) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/763005/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 885956] [NEW] unmute doesn't work anymore
Public bug reported: In Xubuntu Oneiric xfce4-volumed works fine apart from unmute. For some reason "mute" still works as expected – and in fact "unmute" also sends the correct/expected notification, yet nothing happens. The only way to unmute is to do so by opening a mixer (pavucontrol) or using the Sound-Indicator. I would guess (beware: wild guess!) that it might be related to changes in Ubuntu to adapt the volume of headphones when plugged in and saving their volume settings.
